County partners with Lightpath to boost Launch1000 program The Westchester County Department of Economic Development has partnered with Lightpath, the fiber-based bandwidth technology company, to provide 100 free data licenses to participants in the Launch1000 program. These free internet hookups, made possible by the generous support of Lightpath, will provide many entrepreneurs in Westchester with the connectivity needed to bring their business plans to life. “The Launch1000 program is a new idea aimed at supporting
the innovative minds in our own backyard,” County Executive George Latimer said. “Thanks to this support from Lightpath, participants in this program have another opportunity to succeed.” The Westchester County Office of Economic Development announced Launch1000, a new program for county residents who may want to create homebased income streams, or launch new businesses or nonprofits in October 2020. “As a longtime provider of connectivity in the Westchester
community, Lightpath is proud to partner with the County on this incredible initiative to bring the power of our advanced network to local entrepreneurs as part of the Launch1000 program, Lightpath CEO Chris Morley said. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Westchester and seeing the great business ideas that emerge as part of this initiative.” Launch1000 is an innovative, fully remote, self-paced program designed to turn concepts and ideas into business plans and startups. Born out of a global pan-
demic, the program offers 1000 Westchester County residents the opportunity to gain critical business knowledge, connect with mentors and help their idea gain traction. “Our office is always looking for ways to advance the interests of Westchester’s businesses—both established and prospective,” said Bridget Gibbons, county director of Economic Development. “This program, with support of Lightpath, is another tool we have to accomplish our goal.” (Submitted)
Gov. Andrew Cuomo today announced on Monday, Feb. 8 that New York City indoor dining can reopen at 25% capacity on Feb. 12, Lunar New Year Day. The reopening was previously scheduled for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, but restaurants requested an earlier reopening date to allow staff to prepare and the request has been granted. The reopening is subject to strict state guidance. “We respond to the data, we respond to the facts,” Cuomo said. “And the numbers [of infections] are down now.” State officials believe that the post-holiday surge has not subsided as the infection rate continues to lessen. “We’re in a footrace with COVID, and the footrace is clear—it’s rate of vaccination versus rate of infection and we’re continuing to make progress on both fronts,” Cuomo said. “Not only have we administered more than two million doses of the vaccine, but the infection rate continues to decrease and New Yorkers should feel good about
that. After all, this was possible because of their actions, their discipline and their sacrifice. As we move forward, we›re continuing to respond to the facts and data every day, and when the enemy changes tactics, we change with the enemy.”

Westchester’s food recycling program makes impact When Westchester County Executive George Latimer announced the launch of the Department of Environmental Facility’s new Residential Food Scrap Transportation and Disposal, RFSTAD, program, he emphasized that one of the goals was to design a program that would make sense, both environmentally and financially, for municipalities that were not already operating residential food recycling programs. The decision by the city of White Plains to start a voluntary, residential food scrap drop-off program and to participate in the RFSTAD program, goes a long way toward meeting the county executive’s mandate. “We could not be happier with the City’s decision to partner with the County in expanding food scrap recycling options for our residents,” Latimer said. “The inclusion of White Plains will make a tremendous impact, representing the largest municipality in the County to date offering food scrap recycling to its residents. The goal of the RFSTAD program is to expand food scrap recycling by reducing the costs and making it feasible for all our mu-
nicipalities to operate programs. The announcement that White Plains will be part of the program shows that it is working the way we intended.” Under RFSTAD, the county’s Department of Environmental Facilities, DEF, arranges for the consolidation, transportation, and processing of food scraps collected by municipalities. The county’s participation reduces the cost so that it is the same as—or less than—the transportation and disposal cost of garbage, making food scrap recycling feasible for municipalities that otherwise would not be able to offer this service. Moreover, incorporating grant funding from the state Department of Environmental Conservation for start-up materials, allows local municipalities to start these programs for a few thousand dollars. “White Plains is excited to participate in this new County program,” White Plains Mayor Tom Roach said. “The City has encouraged its residents to compost on their own property as a means of reducing their carbon footprint, but this new program allows us to expand that opportunity to resi-
dents who do not have their own yards as well as to those who are interested in this new recycling option but do not have use for the compost. In addition to providing an important environmental benefit, the Food Scrap Recycling program is also a great example of shared services between governments, which is good for our taxpayers.” Additionally, the county recently started construction on CompostED, the Department of Environmental Facility’s new Compost and Education Facility in Valhalla. CompostED will be a small-scale compost demonstration facility, offering educational tours and classes on the benefits of composting and for municipalities on incorporating food scraps in municipal yard waste composting activities. The facility is slated to open in spring 2021. DEF and the county also recommend that residents compost at home when they are able. The county sells compost bins and rain barrels at wholesale cost. CURE Media announces Calendar Contest winners CURE Media Group, the industry-leading multimedia platform devoted to cancer updates and research that reaches more than 1 million patients, survivors and caregivers, is excited to reveal the winners of its second annual CURE Calendar Contest. The 12 selected artists, one of who is from New Rochelle, will have their work featured in an exclusive 2021 calendar. Peri Schwartz, of New Rochelle
won for her collage entitled “Studio #22.” Schwartz is a painter and printmaker who was diagnosed with cancer. Determined to continue her work, Schwartz found working on a collage to be a refreshing change from her usual medium. Her paintings, prints and drawings focus on composition and the interplay of color, light and space; they can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum in London, the Museum
of Fine Arts in Boston and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The winning submissions were selected by a committee of CURE staff members from 121 entries and represent the beauty and creativity that can be found in the cancer experience. In a variety of media including painting, photography, sculpture and more, the pieces not only serve as a therapeutic outlet for the artists but also aim to inspire all those who view them.

Dance Works held its first annual Student Choreography Showcase on Jan.15-17. The intention of this project was to inspire our youth choreographers and to reveal to them all that it takes to be a choreographer and decisions made throughout the creative process. Students showcased dances in many genres including Hip Hop, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Irish Dance and more. The pieces evoked wide smiles, laughter, sorrow and all great entertainment. Bravo to all our youth choreographers, Twenty percent of the proceeds raised from this event will benefit the Valerie Fund, thevaleriefund.org, supporting kids with cancer and blood disorders. Event recordings via USB and DVD as well as apparel remain available for purchase. We are also delighted to announce that the world-renowned and iconic Pilobolus dance company will be performing in the 17th annual Dance Works 2021 Fundraiser Showcase on March 21. This season, due to Covid-19, each piece will be pre-recorded in theater, in studio, at home, outdoors or wherever it is convenient during pandemic, then assembled into one fabulous production. We support the American Cancer Society’s commitment to help find a cure and offer early detection education and screening to the underserved. We also support the Joe Torre Safe at Home Domestic Violence Awareness initiative, helping to end the cycle and providing needed assistance by funding such programs as Margaret’s Place. It’s important to note that not everyone is safe at home during this pandemic. Domestic Violence cases have skyrocketed. It’s wonderful to be a part of a production that gives back to a worthy cause, gives the dancers a great performance opportunity and enables them to be a part of a larger dance community in a non-competitive environment, especially now. These are tough times for performing artists and for the non-profits, but we are trying to keep things as normal as possible. (Submitted)

With a nod to those historic shows Billy Strings plans “The Deja Vu Experiment” in which the band hopes to tap into the musicianship and fearlessness that the Grateful Dead did 50 years ago unlocking improvisational boundaries of music and psychedelia in a familiar yet unique way. During the 1971 shows, the Grateful Dead conducted ESP Experiments prompting Deadheads in the audience to focus on imagery shown by the band and telepathically send the imagery to a test subject. The Deja Vu Experiment is aiming to similarly tap into a sense of clairvoyance and togetherness by asking the streaming audience to use their minds to collectively “see” and send imagery to special guest

The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions joined with Mamaroneck’s Sedona Tap House Monday’s Dine Out for Charity to raise funds for the Community Resource Center’s eviction relief program During the current coronavirus rent moratorium, the Community Resource Center, CRC, has been working with our communities at risk households to keep them in their homes. They identify those in need, and through partnerships provide legal counseling, negotiations with the landlords and funding direct negotiated payments to the landlords. Every month on every Mon-
day, Sedona donates $2 per steak meal to a local service group or project. To encourage support at both lunch and dinner, they offer their $18 steak meal for only $10. The Lions and Sedona teamed up in January to support the CRC’s eviction protection effort. The Lions agreed to match Sedona’s donation, which was $610 (305 meals served). Individual Lions have made separate donations to increase the Lions total to $1000. Checks totaling $1610 were presented to CRC Director Jirandy Martinez. Mondays in February, Sedona is supporting the STEM alliance Robotics program. In March Se-
dona and the Lions will again team in support of the Fuller Center, which builds and remodels homes to be owned by those in need. They also respond to local emergencies with food, clothing and supplies appropriate to the need. These partnerships are an extension of the Lions effort to bring our community’s service organizations and resources together to address local needs. The Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions are part of the Lions Clubs of the Sound Shore, and Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization. (Submitted)
Awaiting guidance from New York State on amusement park operations, the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation is hopeful Playland Park in Rye will reopen this summer and is preparing to staff up with a virtual job fair. “Although we do not know definitively that we will be opening Playland Park this summer, we want to be prepared.,” County Executive George Latimer said. “This virtual job fair is an innovative way for us to get ready for
the summer.” Playland Park is seeking qualified candidates to fill cashier, ride operator, lifeguard, EMT, painter, carpenter, operations supervisor, clerical/intern, custodial and maintenance roles. Wages start at $14 an hour. “Typically, we hold this event in person at the County Center in White Plains,” said Kathy O’Connor, commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. “As the site remains vital for vaccine distribution, we are proud to present
this event in a new form for those looking for summer employment.” Candidates will have the opportunity to view video descriptions and job specifications. They will then be able to apply to their top three job choices. Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule virtual interviews.
