SEASONAL ADAPTATION

THE URBAN LANDSCAPE, PARTICULARLY IN THE UNITED STATES, IS INCREASINGLY DEFINED BY PRIVATIZED SPACES AND AMENITY ACCESS CONDITIONED BY SOCIO-ECONOMIC CLASS. OUR DESIGN RESPONDS TO THE CRITICAL NEED FOR GENUINELY UNCONDITIONAL PUBLIC REALM SPACES THAT EXIST OUTSIDE OF PRIVATE BUILDING ENVELOPES AND REQUIRE NO ECONOMIC TRANSACTION FOR ENGAGEMENT. TO ENSURE THESE FOUNDATIONAL PUBLIC SPACES REMAIN VIBRANT, SAFE, AND TRULY DEMOCRATIC YEAR-ROUND, THE DESIGN IS ROOTED IN SEASONAL ADAPTATION. EACH CIRCULAR MODULE IS DESIGNED WITH A DUALITY THAT MAXIMIZES UTILITY ACROSS CHICAGO’S EXTREME CLIMATE SHIFTS, PREVENTING THE OBSOLESCENCE, VACANCY, AND SUBSEQUENT INSECURITY THAT PLAGUES SINGLE-USE PUBLIC AREAS DURING OFF-SEASONS. THIS STRATEGIC APPROACH ENSURES SUSTAINED USER OCCUPANCY AND CONTINUOUS COMMUNAL BENEFIT.

FOUNTAIN

THIS AREA FEATURES A LARGE SPHERICAL SCULPTURE THAT FUNCTIONS AS A DYNAMIC WATER FOUNTAIN. WATER FLOWS CONTINUOUSLY OVER THE HIGHLY REFLECTIVE METAL SURFACE AND INTO THE SURROUNDING BASIN, CREATING A VISUAL AND AUDITORY FOCAL POINT THAT WELCOMES VISITORS.

IN WINTER, THE SPHERE TRANSITIONS INTO A STATIC WINTER SCULPTURE. THE WATER FLOW CEASES, AND THE ENTIRE INSTALLATION, INCLUDING THE BASIN, CAN BE COVERED IN A LAYER OF SNOW AND ICE, REFLECTING THE HARSH ENVIRONMENT WHILE MAINTAINING ITS FUNCTION AS AN ICONIC, WELCOMING ELEMENT TO THE PARK.

IT SERVES AS A GREEN PAVILION, OFFERING A SERENE, SHELTERED SPACE PERFECT FOR A QUIET MOMENT OF PAUSE AND RELAXATION, ENHANCED BY THE SURROUNDING VEGETATION.

THE STRUCTURE CONTINUES TO BLOCK HARSH WINDS, BUT THE ADDITION OF A CENTRAL CAMPFIRE CREATES A PROTECTED OUTDOOR MICROCLIMATE. THIS TRANSFORMS THE PAVILION INTO A CRUCIAL GATHERING SPOT, ALLOWING USERS TO SAFELY ENJOY THE OUTDOORS EVEN DURING CHICAGO’S EXTREME COLD.

SENSORY GARDEN

THIS SLIGHTLY ELEVATED CIRCULAR GARDEN PROVIDES A DISTINCT PERSPECTIVE, ALLOWING VISITORS TO VIEW THE SURROUNDING PARK FROM A HIGHER PHYSICAL VANTAGE POINT FOR A UNIQUE SENSORY EXPERIENCE. DURING THE WARMER MONTHS THE SPACE FUNCTIONS AS A PLAYFUL INSTALLATION AREA, WHERE THE CENTRAL TREE PROVIDES SHADE AND STRUCTURES ENCOURAGE CHILDREN’S IMAGINATIVE PLAY.

IN THE WINTER MONTHS THE AREA RETAINS ITS ELEVATED PERSPECTIVE, WHICH BECOMES MORE DRAMATIC AS THE CENTRAL TREE LOSES ITS LEAVES. THE EXISTING PLAY INSTALLATIONS ARE REPURPOSED TO CONTINUE ALLOWING CHILDREN TO ENGAGE IN ACTIVE, SEASONAL PLAY, MAINTAINING ITS FUNCTION AS A YEAR-ROUND RECREATIONAL ASSET.

AMPHITHEATER

THIS TERRACED CIRCULAR AREA FUNCTIONS AS AN AMPHITHEATER, PROVIDING STEPPED SEATING FOR GATHERINGS, RELAXATION, AND PERFORMANCES. VISITORS

CAN BE SEEN READING, PLAYING MUSIC, OR SIMPLY ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS IN A COMMUNAL SETTING.

WITH THE ARRIVAL OF COLD WEATHER, THE AMPHITHEATER FLOOR IS TRANSFORMED INTO A SEASONAL ICE SKATING RINK. MAKING THE CIRCLE A FOCAL POINT FOR ACTIVE WINTER RECREATION AND COMMUNITY GATHERING.

PLAYGROUND 1

DURING THE WARMER MONTHS, THE CIRCLES FUNCTION AS TRADITIONAL PLAY INSTALLATIONS WHERE CHILDREN ACTIVELY ENGAGE WITH THE BUILT-IN STRUCTURES AND GROUND SURFACE.

IN WINTER, THE SAME STRUCTURES ARE REPURPOSED. THE INSTALLATIONS TRANSFORM INTO SLEDDING AND TUBING RAMPS, ADAPTING THE PLAY DYNAMICS FOR EXTREME WEATHER AND ENSURING THE CIRCULAR AREA REMAINS A VIBRANT HUB FOR FUN AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. THE ENTIRE AREA IS COVERED IN SNOW, ENCOURAGING A UNIQUE FORM OF WINTER PLAY.

PLAYGROUND 2

THIS SPACE FEATURES A CENTRAL TREE PROVIDING SHADE AND INCLUDES MONKEY BARS AND OTHER ACTIVE PLAY STRUCTURES. CHILDREN ENJOY CLIMBING AND SWINGING, UTILIZING THE AREA FOR DYNAMIC PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DURING WARMER MONTHS.

IN WINTER, THE MONKEY BARS AND STRUCTURES REMAIN, BUT THE GROUND BECOMES A SEMI-OPEN SNOWY EXPANSE. THIS AREA OFFERS A DIFFERENT KIND OF PLAY, ALLOWING FOR FREE MOVEMENT, SNOW ACTIVITIES, OR SIMPLY A CONTEMPLATIVE SPACE WITHIN THE WINTER LANDSCAPE

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

PRESERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE

THE TRANSFORMATION FROM THE FORMER SALVATION ARMY BUILDING TO THE ATLR HOSPITALITY CENTERED ON MINIMAL INTERVENTION TO THE ICONIC FAÇADE, PRESERVING ITS CHARACTER WHILE ADDING SUBTLE GREEN BALCONIES.
SHAPACK PARTNERS’ PROPOSED PROGRAM (ORIGINAL COLUMNS MAINTAINED, OTHER WALLS SUBJECT TO VARIATION)

REGARDING THE INTERIOR, THE MAIN STRUCTURAL GRID REMAINS, BUT THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW PROGRAM CREATED AN OPEN GROUND FLOOR PLAN LAYOUT. NEW ELEVATORS WERE ADDED ON THE HOTEL LEVELS. NEW INTERNAL WALLS WERE STRATEGICALLY ADDED TO CONCEAL SERVICES AND ENSURE MAXIMUM PROGRAMMATIC FLEXIBILITY.

MCHAP STUDENT’S PROPOSED PROGRAM (ORIGINAL COLUMNS AND SLABS MAINTAINED, OTHER WALLS SUBJECT TO VARIATION)

STRUCTURALLY, THE SLABS IN THE NORTH HALF WERE MODIFIED TO MATCH THE REST OF THE BUILDING, AN ADJUSTMENT VISIBLE IN THE SECTIONS AND FAÇADE. FURTHERMORE, SLABS WERE MODIFIED WITH OPENINGS TO CREATE AN INTERNAL GARDEN AND SKYLIGHTS SPANNING FROM LEVEL 2 TO LEVEL 4..

THE RENOVATION OF THE FORMER REHAB BUILDING INTO THE RESIDENTIAL BLOCK INVOLVED A SIGNIFICANT REDESIGN OF THE FAÇADE WHILE MAINTAINING HISTORICAL ELEMENTS. THE NEW DESIGN REIMAGINES THE VERTICALITY OF THE ORIGINAL BY INCORPORATING LARGER WINDOWS WITHIN THE EXISTING BRICK FRAMEWORK. TO CREATE VISUAL COHESION WITH THE ADJACENT HOSPITALITY BUILDING (FORMER SALVATION ARMY), THE ORIGINAL GROUND FLOOR BRICKS WERE REPLACED WITH LIGHTER COLORED BRICKS. THE VERTICAL EMPHASIS IS FURTHER EXTENDED TO THE NEW ADDITIONS ON THE ROOFTOP.

INSIDE, THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS RETAINED DESPITE THE REMOVAL OF THE ADJACENT THEATER BUILDING AND A COMPLETE CHANGE IN INTERNAL LAYOUT. CRUCIALLY, THE SLABS WERE MODIFIED TO CREATE DOUBLEHEIGHT SPACES IN THE CINEMA, THE LOBBY/RECREATION AREA, AND THE CO-WORKING STUDIO ON LEVEL 2. KEY VERTICAL CIRCULATION NODES REMAIN, ENHANCED BY NEW ELEVATORS, AND ESSENTIAL BUILDING SERVICES LIKE THE BOILER AND VENT STACK ARE PRESERVED AND INTEGRATED INTO THE NEW SCHEME.
