Embracing change

Season of transformation

Message from the Mathers House Coordinator

Embracing change

As the season changes, we’re invited to pause – to look at where we are and where we long to be and make changes that support our wellbeing.

Our goal at Mathers House for the year ahead is to increase participation and ensure we have a relaxed and affordable space where people can gather, connect and enjoy good company.

As we get ready for the year ahead, we have spent time reflecting on the past year which enables us to look at what worked, what didn’t and how we can improve.

As we know it sometimes feels easier not to leave the house, not to reach out to those who you feel may have forgotten about you, but staying connected makes a real difference as does being a part of a community. We are excited to walk alongside and support those who attend Mathers House and over time we hope it feels like a place you don’t have to think twice about coming to.

We have new classes starting soon. These are designed to support health, connection and wellbeing as we age. An example is Spanish in Motion with Silvia on Fridays which also incorporates Latin Dancing, and this issue we have two new afterhours classes –Spanish on Tuesdays at 5 pm and Pilates on Sundays at 10.30 am. Come along and try for yourself in a welcoming environment.

Our kitchen officer is doing a great job cooking nutritious lunch meals at an affordable price Monday to Friday. By preparing fresh, balanced meals it helps maintain strength and improves how we feel. I would like to welcome Hendrikje (Riki) to the program officer role. We are excited to have her join us as we continue to grow and support our community.

Wishing you a new year of health and change for the better.

– Denise

New Program Officer

Hi everyone!

I started as the new program officer late last year and it has been an absolute joy to work at Mathers House. Not only is the job great fun, but the team, volunteers and visitors have been incredibly welcoming.

I’m originally from Germany where I studied variations of history and worked at a university in Berlin. Before I started this job, I was at Oral Health in New Town.

But life isn’t all work! I love hiking in Tasmania (although I’m not so sure why the tiger snakes have to be so plentiful) and will never stop being excited by the sight of a pademelon. In my free time, I enjoy trying out new cafés, being terrible at trivia, birdwatching and spending time with friends and family.

I’m looking forward to a great year ahead. Not only are there so many exciting classes and events coming up, but to me, it’s the people in life that make all the difference.

– Riki
