Making A Difference In Raleigh

by Joshua Henry

It can be hard to find genuinely good people in the world sometimes. It seems that our news is brimming with some pretty terrible stories of the hurt that people can inflict. However, to find some decency in the world, you have to look no further than the non-profit organizations in Raleigh.

North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre .. is a teaching community theatre for both children and adults.

Of course, one of the biggest non-profits is the American Red Cross, and the Triangle Region is comprised of five chapters and serves a population of more than 2 million people. This organization provides lifesaving services and disaster relief 24/7 to anyone in need. These services include helping people prepare for, prevent, and respond to emergencies by providing knowledge and support. Check out the Triangle chapter at www.

redcross.org/nc/raleigh/ Another amazing non-profit organization in North Carolina is the Special Olympics North Carolina. This organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. With roughly 40,000 6

COMMUNITY

registered athletes, the SONC is one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world. The 2015 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games were held in Raleigh and Cary on May 29 – 31. This organization is truly remarkable and more information can be found on their website, www.sonc.net. Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network, Inc is located at 903 Method Road and its mission is to help homeless families get back on their feet by providing shelter, meals and support. The North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theatre located at 7713-511 Leadmine Road is a teaching community theatre for both children and adults. Inter-faith Food Shuttle located at 1001 Blair Drive mission is to end hunger in the community by providing job training, nutrition education and food distribution. Advance Community Health located at 1001 Rock Quarry Road primary care services to uninsured and medically-underserved patients. These are just a few of the many of selfless and inspirational organizations working to make a difference within the world. I encourage everyone to find a cause you are passionate about and team up to make change within your community! After all, it is non-profit organizations that are truly working towards a better tomorrow!

FASHION & BEAUTY Taking off in the City of Oaks

Raleigh Denim Workshop by Katie Baker

When one thinks of fashion and beauty, usually cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Miami come to mind, not Raleigh, NC. But, this budding and thriving city is climbing the ranks as a pioneer in the fashion industry. One of those companies, who is contributing to putting Raleigh on the map for inspiring beauty and fashion, is Nyla Elise Clothing Co. Named after his daughter, owner Ricky Moore, says, “95% of the garments are manufactured, including the cotton, here in North Carolina.” Supporting local businesses is important to Nyla Elise, as they are a true grassroots company, while Moore hand prints each shirt so each piece of clothing has a personal touch to it. Hard work, drive and determination have turned this company into a well-known brand. Moore started out creating the company in a one-bedroom apartment, now one can find celebrities like Kevin Hart, George Lopez and Chuck D wearing the Nyla Elise brand and supporting the company. What sets the company apart is their goal to create something that anyone and everyone can wear. “Our clothes are made for everyone, young to old, valedictorians, skateboarders, captains of the chess team, etc. I want the shirts to represent everyone as a community no matter your walk of life or lifestyle!” Another company pioneering themselves in the Raleigh fashion arena is Raleigh Denim Workshop. Situated in downtown Raleigh, the workshop is run by husband 8

and wife team Victor Lytvinenko and Sarah Yarborough. Through careful, crafted learning of the history and techniques of traditional jeans making, the workshop’s jeans, collection and accessories are all produced in the US only with a fine focus on design, process and material. People can visit their workshop and experience the jeans making process in action as well as shop their jeans, accessories and jewelry in the curatory, which is located in front of their workshop. Raleigh isn’t their only location; they also have a New York City flagship store. Vestique, a women’s clothing boutique on Oberlin Road in Raleigh, has had major success and went on to open other locations including several throughout North and South Carolina. With trendy, modern and chic clothing and accessories, the store also holds events such as “Wine Down Wednesday” which is held the first Wednesday of every month. The store provides complimentary wine, while customers shop and receive 10% off their purchase. They also do “Medical Monday”,

Vestique Clothing Boutique

which is the second Monday of each month, which allows nurses, doctors and anyone working in the medical field can show their badge to receive 10% off their entire purchase. Style, innovation and community involvement helps make these companies and so many others in the area thrive in the beauty and fashion world. the importance OF LIFE INSURANCE

by Joshua Henry

Life Insurance! We speak about such a concept in hushed whispers as if the very mention will summon a certain hooded figure or we avoid it altogether. Yet, it is extremely important that everyone begin thinking about what happens when they are no longer here. Investing in Life Insurance protection is a reflection of our values; what’s most important to us. Upon meeting with a Life Insurance Professional and discussing our personal goals, it will surprise most of us the many benefits of having Life Insurance. The death benefit or coverage amount can be used to cover final expenses, replace lost income, protect mortgages and create wealth for future generations. One of the leading companies in the life insurance industry is New York Life Insurance Company. Operating since 1845, New York Life promises to “work with you to build a strong financial future”. Utilizing a team of committed and skilled agents, this mutual life insurance company does its very best in servicing its client’s needs. Exemplifying this commitment is New York Life’s African American Market Unit (AAMU) and their recently formed $50 Billion African American Empowerment Plan. This plan unites a motivated group of 1,100 African American Market Agents who have pledged to educate and empower their community. This Agent-led movement aims to help families build wealth with particular financial tools and strategies that can help close the financial wealth gap for the African American community. On January 1, 2011, this Agent-led movement began with New York Life agents who became Ambassadors of the movement and dedicated themselves to creating this $50 billion of future income. Ultimately, New York Life hopes to make dreams of a college education, home ownership, entrepreneurship, and retirement a certainty, one family at a time. Not only will this aid the individual, but it will also focus on building financial strength within the African American communities. One of the committed and skilled agents working on this initiative is Pamela P. Thomas. Agent Thomas, a dedicated and hard-working New York Life agent, is working closely with the company and the community to make the empowerment plan a reality. You can hear the passion in Thomas’ words as she discusses the plan and what it could mean for the community. She wants you to, “imagine how this could help strengthen our community”. Also, as far as her personal involvement in the plan, Thomas shares that she is “actively involved in this movement and very serious and passionate about serving her community while making a difference in the lives of others”. From the sound of it, it seems that the community is in very good hands! More information about New York Life, the $50 Billion Empowerment Plan, and Agent Thomas can be found at www.pamelathomas.nylagents.com. 12

The New Triangle Transit Connecting Communities Every Mile of the Way by Jon Kopp

Are you new to the Triangle or trying to learn more about our cities and what is where? Whether you’re trying to save on gas, reduce traffic, or do your part for the environment, GoTriangle has you covered. When most people think of city buses, they think of subways or taxi cabs; used, dirty, crowded, and unpleasant. There was a time when that was true, but in the Triangle, things have come a long way in the last decade. Today, a person can check the real time location of a bus on the way to the bus stop, board in Knightdale, and with a couple transfers, commute to Durham or Chapel Hill and back. The GoTriangle is a modern way of life for many Triangle residents and could be for you too. This particular system started in 1989 and has grown by leaps and bounds since then. GoTriangle as it is now known, offers a website with a wealth of information, current news, and accurate, up to the minute, updates. Their website, www. gotriangle.org can answer any questions you may have regarding schedules, locations, and planning ahead. You can actually track exactly where your bus is at this very moment by logging on. The days of wondering and hoping that your bus will be on time are long gone. People use this system every day to commute to work and school within the Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill areas. In addition to the larger cities, you can also ride to or from Apex, Cary, Clayton, Garner, Hillsborough, Knightdale, RDU International Airport, Research Triangle Park, Wake Forest, Wendell, and Zebulon. By going to the website you will see that GoTriangle provides customized options to accommodate your specific needs and travel schedule. Do yourself a favor and save some money in the process by riding one of the many buses available to transport you to wherever you may need to visit. You can purchase passes in advance for GoTriangle, Go Raleigh (formerly the Capital Area Transit CAT), Cary Transit (C-Tran) or Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) for the lowest available rates online. However, if you just want

to see what all the fuss is about and ride once or twice, your best bet is to purchase your fare on the actual bus you will be riding. You can also plan your trip, check your schedule, receive service alerts and manage your MyRide account on the go! GoTriangle’s operating hours are 5:30 a.m. until 11:15 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6:40 a.m. until 7:20 p.m. on Saturdays. Instead of driving or carpooling, many people rely on the Triangle’s bus system to get them to wherever they need to go around town. In addition to the regional bus service, GoTriangle also offers a vanpool service, as well as regional transit planning, so you’re covered from A to Z when it matters. If you’re curious or wanting to try something new, GoTriangle is the way to go. For as low as $2.25 you will not only get to where you need to go in a safe, modern, clean, and eco-friendly way, but the buses provide free wireless internet and bicycle racks as well. A discounted fare of $1.00 ($1.25 on Express routes) is available to Youth, Senior and Disabled riders. The next time you go to a concert, festival, sporting event, or even to support our clients, give GoTriangle a try and you will be pleasantly surprised. LOCAL NEWS

appletree day care: Appletree Day Care, Inc

A Second Family Not Far From Home by Katie Baker

Every parent knows the ups and downs of finding quality childcare. There are various factors that go into this important decision; some of those influences include safety, staff qualifications and cleanliness. Appletree Day Care encompasses all of those elements quite perfectly. Owner Carolyn Driggers, has been providing the best care in the area for over 25 years. What started out in 1990 with one building has developed into four successful day care centers in the area. “In 1990 after I had my son, I was looking for quality childcare in the Raleigh area and I couldn’t find any”. Drigger’s father owned a house in a great location for a childcare facility. “My father said I could open it, but I had to find a director and stay in property management with him.” So, listening to her father, she hired a director, but as she was about to go on vacation that year, she stopped by the day care and what she saw wasn’t up to her standards. Drigger’s decided to take matters into her own hands; she started working there, fell in love with the parents, children and staff, took over the center and never looked back. Appletree Day Care today has a five star rating, which is the highest a facility can get in the state of North Carolina. “By having a five star facility, you have quality help 17

THECITYINSIGHT.COM

COVER STORY

and it shows you are doing the best you can do for the children, based on program standards and the education of your teachers”, she says. A way they live up to their five star rating is they make sure to include community involvement and even Carolyn lives up to these standards as she is a board member of the North Carolina License Child Care Association and a member of the Kris Murray Child Care Early Marketing Solutions. The center puts on open houses, conferences and they even do an end of the year trip to the Asheboro Zoo, where parents can even join in on the fun. Another way Appletree lives up to the high standard they portray is by thoroughly training their staff as Appletree is very selective in their hiring process. The staff goes through a training procedure where the center teaches them as much as they can before they are put into the classroom with the children. They also offer training throughout the year and they hold regular staff meetings. An important thing on a parent’s mind when enrolling their child in day care is: what can I expect my child to do all day? How will they be entertained? Carolyn says you can expect Appletree Day Care to “keep the children engaged and to learn through play.” Appletree Day Care have adapted the Creative Curriculum, approved by the Division of Child Development and Childhood Education of which is created for research-based and research-proven curriculum resources. It in turn assists caregivers to be their most efficient, while still honoring their creativity, imagination and respecting their position in making learning exciting and important for each child. “We prepare them for the public school system so they can succeed”. Not only that, but Appletree’s attentiveness to each child outshines their competition. The center sends out daily electronic reports after each child is picked up, through a system called LifeCubby, which gives a summary of what your child ate, how they ate, what activities they were involved in and a minimum of two pictures of the child is sent within the report as well. Paper documentation can be presented at the parents request, if that is preferred.

HEALTH & WELLNESS ADVERTISeMENT

Furthermore, Appletree does assessments on the children throughout the year to show parents where their child is at fundamentally. If a child is below standards, the staff at the day care center works with the parents to make sure the child gets the appropriate resources they need to succeed. The children also have their hearing

tested, vision screened and they meet with a speech therapist. The point of all this is so if any problems are detected, it can be detected before the child goes to school and Appletree can get them the resources they need to properly improve. The best part about these extra services is there is no charge, they are included in the fee. The children are also fed breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon, healthy snack. Another important factor is of course, cleanliness. Carolyn says each center uses a “Zono Sanitech”, which is an eco-friendly machine that sanitizes all toys and housekeeping materials. It is done by ultraviolet light and leaves no residue on surfaces and the items do not need to be rinsed or wiped once they go through the machine. The best part about it is they can be used immediately after the sanitation process. “This helps cut down on sickness”, she continues, “we are a health and wellness facility and we like to promote healthy things for children, the machine keeps the germs out and parents then do not have to miss days out from work.” If you have never placed your child in day care and don’t know what to expect, they advise you to schedule a tour of the facility and you will be able to see all the COVER STORY

19

classrooms. “We like to provide one on one time with that parent to answer any questions. We not only show them their child’s classroom but all the classrooms within the facility, so when their child ages up they will be familiar with it”, says Carolyn. With two small facilities and two large facilities you can pick which one best suits your family’s needs. Perhaps the smaller facilities are necessary if you want more of that in-home personal touch. Each center has more than one playground so your children are able to get the daily exercise they crave, and the playgrounds are developmental appropriate for the age group. Enrollment can fluctuate, so Carolyn advises, “if you want infant care, we think 2 months prior to you wanting your child to start you should enroll them. Sometimes we fill up and there is a waiting list”. “We stay busy. Last year we graduated 73 Pre-K children”. And while the day care center stays busy, Carolyn knows every parent leads a busy life as well. That is why before and after school care is offered as well as summer camp programs. “We cater to the schools that are traditional plus year-round. Each week has a specific topic that children learn about through play and story time and we cater to children up to age 12. So that the ones that are tracked out have a place to go.” So, what does the future hold for this highly acclaimed day care center? “We have four centers right now, excellent staff and excellent management, we don’t plan on growing anytime soon.” Carolyn wants to focus on the four centers she currently runs. In December of 2015, the facility on 4604 Pool Road, known as Appletree Child Development Center, achieved an accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, from birth through age 8. The NAEYC’s mission is to “advance a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and support all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.” And in the end, the goal is to eventually have all four of her facilities accredited by the NAEYC. Carolyn also down the line wants to help other centers just getting started and provide them the knowledge from her experience, help them grow their business and give back to other providers. 20

FRESH From Our Family To Yours by Ella Frazier

One of the best places in the Triangle for fresh seafood

Locally owned businesses are one of the best choices for fresh, authentic and unique goods and services. Located right off of Capital Boulevard on Fenton Street is a seafood lover’s dream. Saltwater Seafood is the place for both fresh seafood and already prepared seafood cooked fresh from its fry shack. You may ask yourself who is Saltwater Seafood? Saltwater Seafood is a family-owned business. David, Mike and Debbie Earp have always been involved in the seafood industry. Their family history with seafood spans more than 40 years. “My grandfather always wanted a seafood market on this side of town. It has always been my dream to own my own business”, states Mike. “Me, my wife and my uncle brought the property at Fenton Street and then we put a fry shack in it”. Unfortunately, his uncle and his uncle’s wife passed away in recent years leaving the business to Mike and his wife Debbie. North Carolina is a great State for seafood both fresh and saltwater. The Atlantic Ocean is just hours away. Seafood is a good choice for your diet because it provides the best sources of good fats, vitamins, and minerals to promote good health. One person who recognizes the benefits of seafood is Carolina Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton who recently began a pescetarian diet right before the start of this NFL season. Saltwater Seafood offers both great quality service and quality seafood. The fish you see today is gone tomorrow. “It’s the only fresh seafood market in town with a fry shack in it”. The fry shack offers bone-in specials and fresh water catches such as croakers for $5.50. The fish at Saltwater Seafood is the closest thing you can find on land. Some tips when shopping for fish according to Saltwater Seafood, is to look at the color of the eyes, and the gills firmness of the body. A fresh fish will smell like fish and it will not smell bad. In order to maintain a quality product for you, “We keep fish iced down. We offer ice to go in each bag before it leaves the store, just in case you 22

want to make a stop or it takes a little while for you to get home”. Saltwater Seafood is your one stop shop. They carry seasonings and meals for your seafood. In addition to family packs of freshly cooked family-sized meals, one may purchase 8 pieces of fish such as whiting, trout or flounder, along with French fries or coleslaw and one dozen hushpuppies all for under $20.00. Where can you find fresh oysters? If you want them prepared for you, step to the fry shack and get oysters and shrimp for under $15.00, oh and did I say you can get scallops with that too. Saltwater Seafood carries a large variety of both fresh and fresh frozen such as alligator, conch meat, clam strips, frog legs and crawfish (tail meat). It’s everything you need to create your favorite southern recipes such as shrimp and grits, and those favorite calabash style meals. You will also find seafood for your favorite regional meals such as those cajun dishes as shrimp creole, gumbo, where “Slap Your Mama” seasonings are on site for purchase.

Harris Barber College

Over 70 Years of Service and History by Brittany Murdock

When looking at colleges to attend, it can be tricky and confusing to make the right decisions. Many of us consider the history of the school, its reputation, the teacher’s commitment to their students, affordable pricing, and an overall enjoyable and friendly environment. With over 70 years of serving the public, Harris Barber College has mastered these concepts. The school was founded in 1930 by Samuel Harris. Over the years the school has been passed down and is currently in the hands of Tobias McLean since January of 1994. McLean is a graduate of Harris Barber College as well as a licensed cosmetologist. He continued his studies and earned an instructor’s license. Soon he became a part-time instructor and a full-time instructor before eventually taking over the college. McLean not only has a passion for the school but his true commitment lies within the students. Harris Barber College offers top of the line service and education. Students learn the techniques of the trade down to the very basics of barbering. Skills include technique in cutting, styling, waving and total hair care. Practice in shaving, massaging, shampooing, hair/ facial treatments, and beard trims are a few of the many lessons that are taught. Courses, lessons, and classes are taught by proficient barbers with years of experience and talent. 26

Students are also able to get valuable hands on experience by providing barbering services to the general public. Students receive top of the line training on real customers. With over 70 years of service, the college has developed a large customer base that continues to return year after year. But the fun doesn’t stop there. McLean also has speakers visit theclassrooms throughout the program. “The classrooms are visited by speakers throughout the course to discuss life skills, responsibilities as a barber, becoming role models in the community, and most importantly to give encouragement,” says McLean. The school is not only the oldest African American school in the state of North Carolina but it is also the only barber school in the state that offers on campus living quarters. The housing and the program itself come at a reasonable price and the schools works with students to come up with a practical payment plan. “We are a family at Harris Barber College and we are here for the people,” said McLean. “We are here to share and grow with our customers. We train students to be the best they can possibly be and teach them to be great examples to the community as men and women.” For more information about Harris Barber College please visit www.hbccollege.com.

Pedagogy Art: Bringing a Unique Art Experience to the Community by Joshua Henry

Art! The term can summon up images of dusty paintings and abstract sculptures within a museum, but it is so much more than that! Art is a creative process that can bring a community of people together. It does not take talent to create; in fact art is more about the experience than the outcome. This is something that the emerging Pedagogy Art takes advantage of in their unique business.

Check out our new website, www.AuthorsAndArt.com Pedagogy Art is an up and coming art business that aims to bring out the artist in everyone! What began as a simple birthday celebration has turned into a business that brings people together to create art. The Haywood Experience – Treating You as Part of the Family by Elizabeth B. Sherman

There’s a comfort in working with someone you know. In being treated like a person instead of a paycheck. That’s why so many customers in the Raleigh area and beyond depend on Haywood Funeral Home when faced with the death of a loved one. For over 100 years, Haywood Funeral home has provided knowledge, guidance and support to families in the Triangle. In 1914, a group of ten investors including Charles Albert “Doll” Haywood started the Raleigh Undertaking Service to serve the Southeast Raleigh community. The company’s name was changed to Haywood Funeral Home, Inc. in 1964, and was passed on to Doll Haywood’s family upon his death. Today, Haywood Funeral Home is run by Doll’s grandsons, Orrin Ray Haywood, Jr., President, and Karl Stephen Anderson, Vice President.

As to why Ray Haywood chose to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, he says, “We felt like it needed to be an identifiable home-grown business serving the Raleigh area. This is where our roots are.” The majority of Haywood’s customers are still in the Raleigh area, but he says, “We can handle services in a wider area now. Sometimes in Durham, sometimes Johnston County and definitely “We felt like it needed Wake County.” In a few instances, Haywood has to be an identifiable coordinated services in the state of Virginia, for individuals who lived and passed away in the Raleigh home-grown business area, but wished to be buried where they were born. serving the Raleigh

Services at Haywood Funeral Home are tailor-fitted area. This is where to meet each family’s individual needs. Some families our roots are.” want basic, more cost-effective accommodations. Others spare no expense in having every detail personalized to match their loved one’s preferences or personal style. The first thing Haywood does when customers come to the funeral home is get a feeling for who their loved one was. “We ask if they have a picture album, we like to scan pictures of the person, the person with their family to use in the service. We get to know the person’s life. We ask what type of work the person did, what colors they liked.” The most unique service Haywood has held was for a married couple. The wife died first and her husband died less than a week later. They were a very close couple, and 34

spent their whole lives together. Haywood had an unusual idea for their service, but offered it to the family; the couple could be buried together, in one casket. “I presented the idea to the family,” says Haywood. “At first they were hesitant. But the more they thought about it, the more they liked the idea. They thought it would be very nice and fitting. They were extremely happy with the result.” The couple was presented together at the memorial service in one oversized casket, linked arm-in-arm. They were buried the same way, together forever. Haywood shares his personal philosophy, “We try to go the extra mile, get to know the person and the family. It’s more of a touchy-feely thing than a science.” The funeral home’s website, www.HaywoodFH.com, is a great starting point for families who have experienced a loss. It offers a preplanning checklist of things to consider, a description of types of arrangements available, and photos of the new hearses and limousines purchased in 2014. Haywood will soon offer streaming live video of funerals for out of town families, so they can be part of their loved one’s memorial service. Haywood says, “We’re always trying to make improvements in our service. We listen to families and try to make improvements.”
