LETTER TO THE EDITOR Welcome.
The past few months have been more than many of us expected it to be
but now we’re back to school and have much to look forward to. This year many college students were affected one way or another by COVID-19 in some way. We’ve all had to adjust to coming back to school and to getting back into a routine even with the odd circumstances of zoom meetings, virtual classes, and remembering to put on a mask before walking out the door. With all these new changes, it can feel overwhelming at times but we hope this magazine becomes a way for those to have a creative escape. The Chic Daily has created this first issue for you all to enjoy reading about your favorite things whether that be fashion, lifestyle, food, music, or a little bit of everything. The Chic Daily’s writers worked hard to put together this issue in hopes of giving you all something new and exciting to look and read about. With much anticipation and excitement, we introduce to you, The Chic Mag. Enjoy.

Megan Barbera
I joined the Chic Daily as an awkward freshman. Despite being a journalism
Lauren Lippert
major, I had little clue of what I wanted to do or if I really wanted to be a journalist. I was drawn to the fashion journalism club because fashion has always been a constant passion in my life and the organization was so different than anything else at Cronkite. As I joined and became more invested in the club, I started to fall in love with the fashion world and connect with those in it. I loved the community and collaboration aspect of the club, and watching FJC grow and develop has been one of the highlights of my college experience. This club helped me discover what I’m truly passionate about and introduced me to some of my favorite people ever!
I’ve always had a love for fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. I think it stemmed from the fact that when I was little my mom had a subscription to People’s magazine and I found the beauty and fashion section to be extremely fascinating. With that being said, I joined TheChicDaily my freshman year, excited to be a part of that community and boy was I. As a junior and Vice President I’ve been to five Phoenix Fashion Weeks, been apart of four charity fashion shows ran by the chic and have been able to interview really awesome designers and models. While the fashion club may provide amazing opportunities, as cheesy as it sounds, it really is more than just a club but a family and I’m forever grateful I joined my freshman year.
Mckenna Leavens
A year ago I got my heartbroken, I moved to a big city and had Dear John on
replay in my small studio apartment. I truly believed my world was ending, little did I know it was actually just starting. On a Wednesday night I walked into a lifestyle/fashion club and they had their own blog called TheChicDaily. I pitched an idea for a relationship column, totally Carrie Bradshaw style! My column took off, I was publishing an article weekly and I even started my own relationship podcast with another member. I am now editor-in-chief of the club and am loving every minute of it! TheChicDaily has changed my life and opened so many doors for me, I am grateful for my journey that led me here.

I joined The Chic Daily during my freshman year of college. I wanted to be in-
volved downtown since the community can feel so small at times. I love fashion and expressing my creativity through writing and digital media. The Chic Daily allowed me to do both those things while improving my writing and multimedia skills. In my sophomore year, I was appointed Social Media Director. I love coming up with our social content and promoting our members’ stories. I’ve learned so much about social media and graphic design because of this position. I am now entering my junior year and I can’t wait to create better content. I am a Public Relations major with a Fashion minor. This club helps me create content that I can use for my portfolio. I have gained so much real-life experience to help me prepare for my future. We welcome all creativity and want to grow into something bigger than just a school club.
Autumn Schieferstein
Hi everyone! My name is Autumn Schieferstein and I am a writer and the
events coordinator for The Chic Daily. I’m currently a junior studying journalism with a minor in fashion. Since moving to the desert from Wyoming, I have come across an abundance of opportunities thanks to The Chic Daily. This includes covering Phoenix Fashion Week, interviewing local designers and even organizing our semesterly fashion show for charity. I’m so excited for this year and everything that’s to come.
Cameron Rubner
Bonjour! My name is Cameron Rubner and I’m the multimedia director at
The Chic Daily! I’m currently a junior at ASU majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication. My obsession with all things pop culture and counterculture lead me to wanting to write and make videos about it. My personal style is heavily influenced by the New York skateboarding culture and the late 1980s early 1990s. I wanted to bring an outsiders point of view to The Chic Daily through my work. My goal is to expand our publications online presence as much as possible. My end goal in all of this is to live comfortably doing what I love with the people I love.

Starting college was pretty nerve wracking. I had no idea what I wanted to do with
the degree I chose, and it seemed as if everybody around me already knew their career paths.During Cronkite’s Student Organization Night, I found the Fashion Journalism Club. This booth’s fashionable journalists and stylish decor, stood out from the others. After much thought, I decided to join. I ended up as the social media assistant and got to make many connections and friends. The Chic Daily helped shape what I want for my future. I found an interest in social media and graphic design, and I also got to improve my writing skills without feeling any pressure. In addition to my major in journalism and mass communication, I’m also working toward a double minor in fashion and digital audience. I’m very excited about working with The Chic Daily team this year, and I can’t wait to see what we will achieve!
Gabriella Herran
Hello! I’m the Magazine Content Director for The Chic Daily’s monthly magazine!
I decided to take on this position because I love the creative process behind projects, and doing that with a magazine like The Chic’s has been an unforgettable experience. I look forward to finding new and creative ideas and thoughts for each magazine to come.
Maja Peirce
Hey there! My name is Maja Peirce and I am a journalist and creative director. I
am currently majoring in Journalism and Mass Communications with a minor in Fashion at ASU. When I found The Chic Daily during my freshman year of college it was a breath of fresh air. The freedom of being able to express myself and practice journalism was something I felt I had been searching for. I have always loved fashion, particularily upcycled and sustainable fashion. I look forward to creating this magazine with the club this year and exploring my graphic design and creative director abilities.

FOR THE LOVE OF FASHION -DRIP BY MEWN T
he fashion industry has always been an outlet for creative minds. ASU’s fashion program has been a huge way for students to express their passion for innovation and originality. One student that has taken this love for fashion to the next level is The Chic Daily’s own, Megan Barbera. In just three years at ASU, Barbera has taken the fashion scene on campus by storm. She not only has built her own fashion brand, Drip By Mewn, which she named after a joke she had with her friends. Barbera’s inspiration for her brand also stems partly from her hometown. “Growing up in Boston, style was more conservative and then coming here [Arizona], people dress more freely and show more skin,” Barbera said. “Which is what I wanted to do because in a way that represents body empowerment and liberation, and that’s definitely what I want my brand to be about.”
“I first got involved with The Chic Daily as a freshman and when I was a sophomore I became editor-in-chief, as time went on I moved up to president,” Barbera said. “It has grown so much since I was a freshman, so it’s really exciting to see how it will continue to grow this year.” Although Barbera’s brand is targeted toward college students between the ages of 18-25, she hopes to broaden this in the future. She describes her brand as “for fun, free-spirited individuals that like to go with the flow,” and much of her inspiration comes from the ‘60s and ‘70s disco era as well as the “liberation” that comes from those decades. In the future, Barbera has big plans for her brand. She hopes to have her own store or boutique “in a beach city like Miami or Los Angeles.” As of now, Barbera wants to keep growing her brand and doing whatever she can to get exposure.
This past June, Barbera used her platform to further represent what she wants her brand to stand for and also gave a voice to those unheard. Barbera put together a raffle on Instagram for products from her brand and the proceeds from the raffle went straight to black-owned businesses in Atlanta that were affected by looting.
The fashion industry isn’t always seen as the most feasible career path. Barbera has proved this stereotype to be wrong with her brand continuing to grow and her creative personality.
“It felt like it was something of a call to action and I believe that when you have an audience whether it be big or small, it’s important that you use your power to help others as much as possible especially in times like this,” Barbera said.
“Don’t listen to the comments. If you have a passion for something and you’re good at it, you’ll end up where you need to be. Don’t be afraid to create things, collaborate with people, and grow your creative network as much as possible. It all works out and will be worth it in the end.”
Not only is Barbera a leader in her community but she became a leader on campus when she decided to
6
take up the role as president for the fashion journalism club, The Chic Daily.
Barbera shares some of her own advice on how to look past judgments in the industry.

In 2013, 16-year-old, Yung Lean, and his Swedish music collective “Sad Boys,” had gone viral while decked out in polo and toting bottles of Arizona Iced tea. Another Swedish rap trio by the name of “Gravity Boys” had just begun to plant its seeds that would sprout the group now known as Drain Gang. Originating from Stockholm, Sweden, The group consists of Swedish Rappers Bladee and Ecco 2K, Swedish-Thai Rapper Thaiboy Digital, and Swedish producers Yung Sherman and Whitearmor. Since 2013 Drain Gang has changed its name from Gravity Boys to Shield Gang to Gravity Boys Shield Gang to finally Drain Gang.
So what exactly is drain? Ac-
cording to Bladee himself, “Drain is about loss and gain ... You could be drained of energy or you could drain something to gain energy. There’s financial, emotional, and physical drains. For example -- you could just be draining your bank account at the store. It doesn’t have to be deep.” In that same time span they’ve released four collaborative projects, “GTBSG” in 2013, “AvP” in 2016, “D&G” in 2017, and last year in 2019 they released “Trash Island.” Their sound has managed to evolve past the initial cloud rap label it was originally tagged with into something so unique that it is nearly impossible to try to replicate without coming off as biting. It’s obvious when an artist takes cues from them. They’ve created their own world aesthetically, sonically and visually. Just as important, if not more than, the group’s collective work is their solo work. The self-proclaimed Drain CEO has built up an impeccable solo discography and die-hard cult fan base that’s been encapsulated by the drain aesthet-

His autotune drenched voice and the mysterious sort of fantastical production on his music have become much-loved staples. The man is a mystery and never looks the same in two different pictures. His ability to change his aesthetic every album keeps his listeners in the dark because from one album to the next, you almost have no idea what it will sound like.
In 2019 fans finally got what they had been so desperately waiting for when Ecco 2K dropped his long-awaited solo album, simply titled “E.” The album was met with high critical and fan acclaim. This left fans more than pleased with the final result. In the early months of this year, Ecco 2K was touring the U.S. with Artist, Yves Tumor, before the tour was canceled due to COVID. Thaiboy Digital scored his first hit with Diamonds in 2014, a
song that featured Yung Lean on his debut mixtape, “Tiger.” In 2015, Thaiboy was deported from Sweden due to his mother’s outdated visa. While this has affected the group’s ability to tour, this hasn’t hindered the way they make music. In 2019 Thaiboy Digital also released his debut album featuring a number of features from both Bladee and Ecco as well as Yung Lean. Their fashion is being ripped off every day on social media (mostly TikTok) which speaks to how influential the group is. If Bladee posts a picture of a cracked mirror you can expect the local alternative rap kid to do the same. Twenty-Twenty has been a busy year musically for the group with the release of two full-length albums from Bladee’s “Exeter” and “333” featuring Ecco 2K and various singles from Thaiboy. If you haven’t given these guys a listen, I highly recommend taking some time out of your day to drain.

When the ball dropped on New Years 2020, the world was filled with optimism and life, excited for what the new year would bring. Some were hoping to move on from individual relationships; others were hoping for a fresh new start to establish themselves as a person. Little did we know that all of these hopes and dreams of what we wanted this year to be would come to a halt. However, in a time where things are continuously changing, and there’s so much unknown, there’s also some light that makes this year just a tad more tolerable, and that happens to be fashion. Prior to COVID and quarantine, fashion was about dressing unique and experimenting; now, while it still is this, it’s about comfort and simplicity. Quarantine has created a new era of fashion where comfy matching sets are essential, and giant claw clips can make any outfit seem timeless. Instead of outgoing, eccentric outfits, it’s now simplistic classy looks. Here is how COVID19 has affected fashion
and the way we now dress. Comfy matching sets: Matching sets have been extremely trendy within the last couple of years. With that being said, it’s no surprise that the matching sets have taken on a cozier twist. Not only do these comfy matching sets help you feel like you are appropriately dressed in your home, but it’s also a way for you to feel like you’re still wearing pajamas. It looks put together when, in fact, you put little to no effort. Monochromatic looks: Before quarantine monochrome looks were extremely popular, and during quarantine, these looks were experimented with more. Now, these monochrome looks are a way to put key pieces together while matching colors. This means pairing a basic tee with the same-colored pair of jeans and some cute tennis. Before quarantine, these looks were more about showcasing prints and creating new dynamics to an outfit. Argyle Prints/Knitwear: This trend was up and coming prior to corona and soon transformed into the preppy kid look. Whether it was a matching knit set or
argyle print sweater layered over a collared shirt, this trend showcased how sophisticated outfits coming out of quarantine are going to be. Not to mention they still maintain comfort. Patchwork- Primarily on pants, patchwork has maneuvered its way through the fashion industry for years. Now it’s merely a simple way to add texture and depth to any outfit. It’s one of the more outgoing trends that started in quarantine and will continue to grow outside. It’s not too crazy but can spice up any outfit to make it appear more appealing to the eye. Giant claw clips- This trend became perfected in a time where no one was allowed to leave their house. It not only was a cute simplistic way to put your hair up, but it’s fast and easy. It’s an effortless vintage look that makes anyone look classy and elegant no matter what you wear. It’s no surprise that when the entire world shut down, that new fashion trends began to emerge. Now, we can all be comfy while still looking trendy, attending classes, and work.

Pandem By Autumn Schieferstein
If the infamous Tik Tok ‘Strawberry Dress’ from designer Lirika Matoshi has taught us anything during quarantine it’s that fashion doesn’t slow down for anything, not even a pandemic, it just changes. Even during a recession, the $490.00 dress blew up across the internet. Along with trends like the strawberry dress, the idea of buying clothes ethically spread like wildfire. Whether it be through sites like ThredUp or just reusing old clothes with the latest D-I-Y style, we’ve all had enough time at home to begin seeing how harmful the industry is to human rights and the environment. Another great fashion rule that we’ve broken since entering the pandemic, is the idea of having to match your outfit to your plans. After weeks of the whole world living in sweats, we started to get creative with our outfits. Then after months of putting together crazy makeup and outfit looks together for no one to see, we started to throw the whole idea of an “event-appropriate” outfit out the window. Personally I love this new breakthrough in fashion rules because there’s nothing better than going to the grocery store in a standout outfit, and seeing someone else doing the same. There is now a mutual understanding that we’ve all gone crazy. It’s very refreshing to know that it’s appropriate to wear pajamas or a full length gown any-

The financial stress of the pandemic is also turning many consumers’ attention towards small businesses. As many grab the best steals at boutiques all across the country, they are also having to come to terms with the fact that these small business owners are suffering to lower their prices. Many professionals in the industry worry the economic stress might move the world backwards from the progress made in fast fashion, as large companies continue to dominante. Others though, like fashion expert Rachel Cooke, thinks this may just be the pressure needed to create the ethical fight so many designers have been waiting for. True fashion never sleeps A
s the saying goes, “fashion never sleeps” and during a time where the world stopped and work ceased to exist brands had to get creative with their editorial campaigns. Magazines such as Elle, Vogue, Allure, and fashion brands like Burberry, Chanel, and more enlisted models and celebrities to take pictures of themselves or over Facetime and Zoom. One of them being Bella Hadid for Vogue. Photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti and designer Simon Porte Jacquemus used Facetime to shoot Hadid in her home for the Spring 2020 campaign. There were no stylists, hair, or makeup artists present on set just Hadid, an empty room, and her iPhone. Called “Jacquemus
14
at home,” Hadid modeled his 2020 Spring collection filled with vibrant joyous colors and prints. Although completely unorthodox, Hadid said the shoot still captured the creative collaboration that a team usually feels when on set in a studio. Easily becoming a master with at home photoshoots, Hadid was also featured on the cover of Vogue Italia through Facetime and on the cover of Elle Magazine which was shot by her sister Gigi Hadid. This at-home approach was what ignited other brands to soon follow. Similarly to Hadid, Kendall Jenner took her own pictures for the Burberry’s TB Summer Monogram campaign using only her computer. Jenner wore a bodysuit covered in blue and orange B’s and T’s in honor of the brand’s founder Thomas Burberry. Like her sister,
Kylie Jenner had to also get creative for her “Bedtime Story” campaign with her daughter Stormi. Taken over Zoom by fashion photographers Luca and Alessandro Morelli for the cover of Vogue Czechoslovakia, the shot was an up-close picture of Kylie wearing minimal makeup and Stormi. Rosie-Huntington Whiteley was another model who instead of using Zoom or Facetime, turned to her actor husband Jason Statham to photograph her at home for Allure magazine. Wearing bright red lipstick and all black, Whiteley spoke of how her COVID experience has been comprised of hanging with her son and relaxing. Francisco Lachowski was a male model who used a Zoom call with pho-
tographer Chris Sutton to shoot his cover picture while isolated in his Brooklyn home. Lachowski graced the cover of L’Officiel Hommes Italia wearing an allblack ensemble with Calvin Klein underwear and a graphic tee. While COVID19 continues to grow, so does the creativity of the fashion industry because it’s true, fashion truly never sleeps and the results are mind-blowing. The fashion industry had no choice but to find creative ways to get their brands out there. With the help of creative models and celebrities, they get the job done. Technology truly has been the biggest life-saver during this pandemic and I’m excited to see what else the fashion industry has in store.

LOOKIN’ FLY By Riley Anderson
As classes have transitioned from in-person to Zoom, finding the motivation to get ready in the morning has become a chore. If you’re like me you probably see it as a waste of time and make-up. Personally, I don’t want to put on a full face of products, but I also don’t want to look like I just rolled out of bed. This is why my morning skincare routine is so important to me. These products have helped me feel awake while also giving me nice skin and a pretty hair glow.
1
First, I start off by using my dermatologist prescribed face wash and my Vanity Planet. My face wash is the only thing I use that is prescription based. The key ingredients are sodium and sulfur, which my skin does not produce enough of. This face wash cleans out my pores like no other and I love what it does to my skin! I’ve been using my Vanity Planet to wash my face for about a year now and I love that it comes with different brushes, it’s also super easy to clean. I feel like my hands never really got deep into my skin the way my vanity planet does. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to change up their skincare routine.

Next up are two products from The Ordinary. This brand recently blew up, thanks to Tik Tok, which is how I discovered the products. You can find these products on their website, Sephora, online, or at Ulta. The biggest draw toward these products is how affordable they are.
LY ON ZOOM 3
First I use the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. The purpose of this product is to give your face an extra boost of moisture and really lock it in. My skin feels super hydrated and glows brighter than ever after using it, I am obsessed. Living in Arizona dries my skin out, so this product has been a lifesaver!
5
4
The second product is the Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%. This cream has changed my life! The purpose of the cream is to even out the skin tone and remove acne scarring. I had bad acne when I was younger and went on Accutane, leaving me with bad scarring. I have only been using it for about two months and I’ve already seen amazing results. For anyone struggling with acne scarring, this product is a MUST have!
Another product I love is Mario Badescu drying lotion. For me, this is a night product that I wash off in the morning. It works really well on bad active pimples and they’re usually gone in the morning. This product sometimes stings, but the results are worth it.
6
The last skin product I use is the CeraVe daily moisturizing lotion. I love how it leaves my skin feeling hydrated, soft and looking glowy. I don’t think I’ll ever get another moisturizer again!
17
LOOKIN’ FLY 7
Now onto the hair products. The first product is from The Ordinary, it can be used when your hair is dry or wet. Its purpose is to promote overall hair health and frizz, which I have lots of! I use it on my hair when I get out of the shower. I haven’t been using the product long enough to see results, but if it’s anything like their skincare I have faith!
8
9
The next two products I use are from the company Dry Bar. I adore this brand and their products, even though some can be pricey. However, the two I use are no more than $20.00 from Sephora.
First up I use the Prep Rally prime and prep detangler. I purchased this product more recently, but I’m already in love with it. You can spray it through dry or wet hair before you brush... I have naturally curly hair, so this product has been my saving grace.
18
LY ON ZOOM 10
After using this product my hair is much easier to brush through and I don’t feel like I’m damaging it. The second product I use I’ve been obsessed with for years now. It’s called the Hot Toddy heat protectant mist. First off, you should always use a heat protectant on your hair, especially if you straighten it as often as I do. Spray this product onto dry hair before straightening or applying any heat. It not only smells amazing, but it leaves my hair feeling super silky and smooth. This product is something I immediately buy once I’m out because it’s that good!
11
The last product I love is something very basic, but I can’t live without it. It’s the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm. I use this product because it gives my lips color while also hydrating them. I am a major lipstick girl and I hate when my lips don’t have color. However, I only wear lipstick when I do a full makeup routine. This is the perfect alternative for me to use when I’m not trying to look dressed up.
There you have it, all my favorite skin and hair care products to make you feel beautiful on zoom. I love all these products and would recommend them to anyone. I hope you have the chance to try them out before attending your zoom classes sometime!

Trying To Stay Fit Du By McKenna Leavens It’s no longer called the freshman 15, but in fact, COVID 20… As I’m sure a lot of you know, staying fit during a global pandemic is challenging. It’s especially difficult now more than ever as most of us are moving into dorms, apartments, etc. and attempting to start back up at college. My apartment gym is closed until further notice, and the Sun Devil Fitness Complex at ASU is appointment based only, which isn’t ideal for many of us and our busy schedules. Governor Doug Ducey’s executive order stated that gyms could reopen based on specific guidelines that each county has to meet. Gyms may operate at 25% occupancy in counties with moderate spread, generally defined as having an infection rate between 5% and 10%, according to Ducey. With that being said, not many are relying on their gym to open anytime soon. Being a college student and wanting to implement exercise in a daily routine can be hard during these times but certainly not impossible. While I know
20
many of us live in spaces that are quite small, workouts at home will be the saving grace while gyms are closed. If your apartment or dorm is too tiny for an at-home workout, then go to a local park and find a grass area or move some furniture to create a bigger space. Working out at least three times a week will help keep you sane and keep your stamina up, so when the gyms can reopen, you aren’t too far behind. I typically do three circuit workouts a week, and on the four other days, try to get my heart rate up by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to a place nearby rather than driving.
Circuit One:
REPEAT THREE TIMES Curtsy Lunges 45 seconds 10-second rest Prisoner Squats 45 seconds REPEAT FOUR TIMES Plank to Push Up 30 seconds 10-second rest Bicycle crunch 30 seconds REPEAT THREE TIMES Squat Jump 45 seconds 10 seconds rest Full Plank 60 seconds REPEAT FOUR TIMES Lateral Jump with toe-tap 30 seconds 10 seconds off Side Plank (each side) 30 seconds ALL DONE!!
If you have the choice to be active or lazy, choose active, especially while gyms are closed. I promise it will benefit you in the long run, not just physically but mentally as well. Another thing I hear a lot is, “I don’t have any equipment at home!” That is perfectly okay; neither do I, the circuits that I will provide don’t need equipment, but if you own some, then feel free to add it to these workouts. While stuck in quarantine, many were looking for ways to cure their boredom. The medicine for this boredom was found on the for you pages of Tik Tok, compelling some to learn new cooking skills. As one of the fastest-growing apps in the world, TikTok serves as a breeding ground for new cultural trends. From the revival of Willy Wonka to the latest Charli D’amelio dance. Food is most certainly a part of TikTok’s culture. While COVID-19 grew throughout the world, people found refuge in some of the fun and easy food recipes that went viral on TikTok. Colorful drinks and fluffy breads graced through the for you pages of many quarantined kids.
At the beginning of the pandemic, the whipped coffee trend took off in the U.S. Originally from South Korea, this drink has four simple ingredients: instant coffee, water, sugar, and milk. To make this drink, one simply has to whip the coffee, water, and sugar together until light brown. The foam is then placed on top of a glass of cold milk. The whipped coffee brought a sense of creativity and fun to staying inside. Instant coffee started to fly off the shelves during the month of March. This drink was a good way for people to feel like they have some sort of control in their life again, despite the virus spreading around them. Because of the simple ingredients and easy to follow steps, this drink was a hit. ------
TIK TOK WHIPPED COFFEE RECIPE Ingredients: 2 Tbsp Sugar 2 Tbsp Hot Water 2 Tbsp Instant Coffee Milk Pour sugar, water, and instant coffee into a bowl. Mix ingredients together with a whisk until foamy and light brown. In a separate glass, pour milk and ice. Make sure to leave room at the top for the foam. Scoop the foam mixture and place it on top of the ice.

For those of you looking for cute and simple date ideas, the charcuterie board started making rounds on TikTok and even Instagram pages. Typically, these boards consist of cured meats, cheese, fruit, bread, and jam. It’s easy to make one: simply cut up the ingredients and place them nicely on a platter.
In August, the cloud bread went viral. This baked good involves egg whites, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring (optional but makes it fun). The goal is to achieve bread with a light, fluffy texture that is reminiscent of meringue or even cotton candy. Cloud bread is different from regular baked goods in that it provides a fun, carnivalesque aspect of baking. It’s nostalgic for the many fairs and festivals that were canceled in 2020.
Charcuterie boards are the perfect quarantine date idea. They’re a great way to impress friends and family, and they can be enjoyed at the park, on the beach, or even at home. ------

By Isabella Fredrickson Everyone has a passion, and my passion happens to be food. I am a major foodie. So much that I created an instagram account solely to post about all of the foods I eat. My foodie account is @_isabella_eats. While this was something fun that I started during COVID19, it has developed from a tiny project to a full-blown foodie account that I post on daily and enjoy more than my main Insta. This is my story on how I began my passion project, and maybe I can inspire you to start your own. Food has always been a huge part of my life. As funny as it may sound, food is a big part of my identity and who I am. I am Filipino, Norweigian, Danish and Black, and one of the main ways I celebrate and immerse myself in my culture is through food. My grandma is from the Philippines and she lives with my family and me. I grew up eating traditional Filipino foods like lumpia, pancit and adobo. I have fond memories of making Krumkakas, a Norwegian cookie-like dessert, with my Norwegian grandfather. One of my favorite ways of spending time with my dad is in the kitchen. Two
24
dishes that I enjoy making with him are collard greens and beef stroganoff. The collard greens recipe was passed down from his Black side, and the beef stroganoff recipe is from his Danish grandma. At family parties, my dad and grandma always provide delicious southern foods such as gumbo and black eyed-peas.
Food is a staple in my culture and ultimately unifies us. Some of my happiest memories with my family are when we’re gathered around foods that we hold closest to our hearts. These foods have been passed down from generation to generation, and are very important to my family. While each family has their own way of bonding, my family
bonds over food. While I love the foods from my culture, I love trying and discovering foods from other cultures as well. I love to travel, and my favorite part of traveling is trying the foods in different countries. Growing up, my favorite channel was Food Network and the Travel Channel. I knew early on that I wanted to be a food critic when I was older. Basically, I want to take over Andrew Zimmern’s job. With all the traveling and new foods I am constantly eating, I knew I needed to start a blog or something. However, I always put it off because I was too busy. Senior year I was too busy getting ready for college and freshman year I was too busy being a freshman in college. But then, boom, came COVID. I always like to look at the bright side of things, and as horrific and terrible this pandemic was, it was actually what I needed to finally start my food career. During the 2019 Spring break, right before Covid hit, I went to Madrid, Spain with my mom and aunt. As I mentioned, my family bonds over eating, so that whole entire trip all we did
was eat. Of course, the phone eats first, so I took pictures of everything we ate. Fast forward to the next week. I was sent back home to Seattle and the campus had been closed down. I was stuck at home, and besides an hour or so of zoom class, I was BORED out of my mind. I was laying on the couch scrolling through my camera roll one day reminiscing on the delicious foods I was eating the week prior, and then it hit me. Now was the perfect time to finally start my food blog! With zero followers, I began posting all of the delicious foods from my Spain trip. For a while, I had less than 50 followers. My followers included my close friends, relatives, and my mom’s friends. I didn’t mind, because I was just happy that I finally created a platform to share all of my food pictures. While many people took on a Covid hobby such as knitting or working out, my food instagram was my little Covid project. As we saw on the news, the pandemic had hit family-owned businesses hard. Since my family loves to try new foods, we took advantage of this time to help the family-owned businesses in our area. It turned into a fun activity with my family, as we’d choose a family-owned business we wanted to support for that given week, and we’d order takeout from them for dinner.
Of course, I posted each of these places and foods on my food insta, because I wanted to raise awareness and encourage others in my town to support them. Before I knew it, I was gaining followers from major food instagram accounts in Seattle. It became this networking situation, and by following them back, I was introduced to many other foodies and followers. I followed them, they followed me, and before I knew it I was nearing 200 followers.
were of Asian cuisine, and I have gained followers from food accounts all the way from places like China and Thailand. Now that I am in Phoenix again, I am excited to start posting my favorite Phoenix food spots. However, being a broke college student, I do not have the luxury of eating out all the time like I did back home. Thus, I am now going to start making videos of the foods I make in my apartment and sharing them on my food insta.
Come today, my little food The next major event was project has developed into a food the #BLM movement. This was instagram with 401 followers to especially important to me being a date. I posted about their business and their foods, and encouraged my followers to support them. It got to the point where the restaurants I reviewed followed me back and even reposted my content, exposing me to all of their followers. I ate as much as I could, and tried as many new places as I could. I reviewed coffee places, restaurants, boba places, bakeries, and more. First my followers were all from Seattle, but as I began posting my Spain eats again, I even gained followers from Spain. Being a huge Asian food lover, a large number of the foods and drinks I reviewed

MCKENNA’S TOP 10 CR D
uring quarantine, I had A LOT
of free time, like I’m sure most did. So instead of laying in my bed mindlessly scrolling through Twitter or Instagram, I decided to do some book shopping on Amazon. I literally typed in “self-help section” and found myself with 10 books in my cart praying that I had enough money in my bank account to buy them all. Spoiler alert… I did! Here I am, 10 books in, and I definitely feel helped. Instead of keeping all of this love and guidance to myself, I thought I would share it with you all <3

4.
“Spirit Junkie” By Gabrielle Bernstein Another book by my girl Gabby! This is one of Bernstein’s first books and it talks about how she became spiritual, hence “spirit junkie.” If you are looking to put your faith in something or someone, I would definitely check this book out.

“Recovery” By Russell Brand I think a lot of people turn away from the word recovery when in reality, we are all in some sort of recovery. Recovering from heartbreak, drugs, alcohol, or death. This book is blunt and harsh, if you are in need of some tough love this is the book for you.
10.
“The 5 Love Languages” By Gary Chapman If you are currently in a relationship and catch yourself constantly arguing with your partner it’s probably because you both have no clue what love languages are. If this sounds like you then I highly recommend you and your partner read this book
9.
“Judgement Detox” By Gabrielle Bernstein We live in a society where judgment is constantly in the air. Whether we are judging ourselves or others we are always participating in this negative cycle. Bernstein helps her readers see this and gives guidance on how to stop this vicious cycle.
I hope you all love these books as much as I did. I truly believe that each of you could find life changing things in any of these books, all you have to do is start it… it’s all uphill from there.

The Power o and Mindfu Twenty-twenty has been stressful for everyone. Forcing many of us to get to know ourselves over the last eight months better than we may ever have. Whether it be the fear of losing loved ones, losing a source of income, or even just long-term boredom it’s likely you also may have experienced changes in your mental health. Many described quarantine as a great time to look inward and focus on their mental health. Whereas others had so much stress added on, mental health became their last priority and biggest downfall. Personally, I have found a lot of results in meditating and setting intentions for my day. When I first started getting into meditation, manifestations, and intentions I honestly thought it wasn’t really going to work. Despite my belief that I had power over my thoughts, I still felt silly when I first started meditating. It wasn’t until I started recognizing the opportunities already around me that I was able to piece the full picture together. Instead of traditional sitting with your eyes closed kind of meditation, I started writing down things I was grateful for. When I turned my energy towards gratitude, I started to feel more abundant in my life.
30
Through these last few months of meditation
research, I’ve come to learn that it slows down your emotions enough to allow a moment of acceptance and appreciation (hence the abundance in my life). For example, if you’re really stressed during finals week but never take a little time to unwind, you’ll likely have a hard time concentrating when you finally get to your test. The same ideology applies throughout the rest of our lives but we tend to forget to check-in on ourselves on a daily basis. Imagine if you started each day with the intention to make as many people smile as you could, how would your week look? Now, this isn’t to say that this is easy, in fact, it’s very difficult because it requires consistency and unconditional self-forgiveness. As humans, we’re all bound to mess up, especially when starting something new. If you give up too fast on yourself you could end up getting stuck in the same repetitive cycles. Once you’ve started practicing gratitude, self-forgiveness, and slowing down your emotions then true intention setting and manifesting can begin. Many tend to believe that manifesting is a very materialistic light. However, it’s not quite as effective as many might think. If you wanted to become a millionaire, for instance, manifesting sitting on a pile of cash
of Intention ulness by the pool at your mansion will be pretty hard unless you’ve ever experienced anything close to that. Instead, maybe think of the ways you would use that money whether it be starting a business or helping a great cause. This helps to ground you back to your present moment and visualize working towards that goal. Another effective meditation technique is to think of how you want to feel physically, emotionally, and mentally 10 years from now. Personally, I really hope to start dancing again since it was a big part of my childhood that I miss. When I visualize being able to do aerial silk dancing again, I breathe while pulling my stomach all the way and hold it there because I know I need a super-strong core in order to do so. These kinds of meditations help ground us back to the present. Anything that helps you reconnect with your senses, like putting your bare feet on grass or sitting under the sun, will reconnect your manifestations to the present. However these manifestations don’t just work on their own, they simply turn your energy towards what you truly want in life and must be followed up with action. Since deciding I want to go back to danc-
ing soon, I’ve also started exercising my core more to follow through on my manifestations. It’s almost like making small internal promises to yourself, even when it’s not easy. Now you may be wondering by this point if manifesting truly works, and the best I can tell you is yes, I really think it does. I’ve used multiple different forms of manifestation over the last few years in helping me to achieve my goals. One of my favorite methods of manifestations has been vision boards because as some say, seeing is believing. This form allowed me to choose specific visualizations for me and served as a consistent reminder of my dreams. It was also really cool to look at my boards after completing all of my goals. I’m not alone either, online forums with thousands of people claiming success stories of manifesting jobs, opportunities, people, and even material items. I will say if nothing else, manifesting really helps with goal setting so even if you’re not into vision boards, journaling or meditating-I’d still recommend giving it a shot.

I’m Meditating, I’m Praying, and I'm Surrendering I was asked to write a piece about how quarantine has affected relationships. When I read this prompt I laughed out loud. Not because of anything other than the fact that it related directly to my current situation, but who’s surprised right? Like most of you, I went home for spring break and never came back to school. I hung out with my old friends from home but also some people I know I shouldn’t have. I fell back into my old habits where I totally and completely lost myself. I was home for five months and during those five months, my life turned to chaos. Now, this isn’t anyone’s fault except my own. Yes, COVID happened and yes, I had to come home but I didn’t have to revert to someone I used to be, and I sure as hell did not have to get back into another shitty situation with another guy… but I did. Honestly, I am so damn thankful I did because if not for the shitty guys and the bad decisions, I wouldn’t be who I am. Who I am is a girl who loves herself enough to walk away from the chaos and destruction. I won’t lie to you, these past five months have been some of the hardest months of my life, I lost my dad three years ago so that should tell you something. I’m
sure for a lot of you this year has been really overwhelming, disappointing, and all-around TOUGH. This year has also been insanely eye-opening. I started meditating, I started praying and I started surrendering my outcomes over to the universe. I realized that I had hit rock bottom and that I no longer wanted to keep sleepwalking through my life. I wake up every morning and make the decision to feel good, no matter what the day throws my way I keep deciding that I will not let it affect my joy. If you haven’t noticed by now this article isn’t particularly about how relationships have been affected during quarantine because, honestly, I’m over writing about how some guy broke my heart, and how I expect some other guy to come and fix it. SCREW THAT! This article is about how quarantine affected me and my decisions, and the fact that we all get to have decisions. There are things happening in the world right now that none of us can control, but we CAN control how we react to these things. We CAN control how we react to someone breaking our heart and we sure as hell CAN control who we want to be. Like I said, I’m meditating, I’m praying and I’m surrendering because that’s all we can do.

MENtal Health Men’s mental health has been placed on the back burner of society for a while now. It’s only the extreme cases by the most prevalent of celebrities that get remotely noticed. The struggles these celebrities go through are definitely just as important, if not more important than everyone else who suffers from mental illness because of their obligation to hold a certain image to the public. Sometimes having these mental breakdowns posted all over the media can be an advantage because people become aware of the situation and can come to their aid. The mailman does not have the same opportunities to get their story out as Kanye West or Will Smith do. David Letterman isn’t going to call the Walmart cashier and ask him to come onto his show saying, “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.” With this series, I hope to shed light on both the stories of celebrities and of the average person by discussing how their situations are not as different as you might think.
I watched Kanye’s rally and saw his outburst and listened in awe at the outlandish things that came out of his mouth. Then, I got curious and looked into what people were saying in light of this. A decent amount of media outlets were bashing him without acknowledging all of the mental health issues he was facing. This manic episode by Kanye made me realize how little men’s mental health is talked about. With Kanye being my inspiration for this series, it would only be appropriate to start off by diving into the mind of Kanye West and how he’s dealt with Bipolar Disorder under the spotlight. I will be covering people of all backgrounds from athletes, singers, and the average Joe so we can see that, while we are all different, we all struggle with similar issues no matter how much clout these celebrities have.
