3 arrested in shooting WINGATE – The Union County Sheriff’s Office arrested three people in connection with a shooting Aug. 19 in the 1100 block of Eastwood Drive in Wingate. Deputies determined that two homes had been struck by gunfire. No injuries were reported. Detectives identified three suspects in connection with
the shooting. Assisted by officers from the Monroe Police Department, detectives executed a search warrant at an apartment complex in Monroe. They seized the vehicle believed to have been used in this incident and recovered three firearms from the apartment, officials said. Shauntelle Staton, Oquavyon McBride and Z’nyha McClendon
were taken into custody. McBride was charged with two counts of firearm by felon, felony conspiracy and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. McClendon and Staton were each charged with aid and abet firearm by felon, felony conspiracy and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

Police investigate shots fired into Monroe home
MONROE – The Monroe Police Department is investigating shots fired into a home on Skywatch Lane. Police responded to the 600 block of Skywatch Lane around 10:20 p.m. Aug. 20 after a home was reported to have been shot into multiple times. No one was injured. Witnesses reported seeing a black vehicle circling the neighborhood prior to the shooting. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible. Anyone who may have video from the area that could help investigators is asked to call the police department at 704282-4700.

Police seize illegal gambling devices MONROE – Investigators with the Monroe Police Department have shut down an illegal gambling operation. The special response team served a search warrant around 5 a.m. Aug. 24 at a business at 314 Old Morgan Mill Road. The search was the result of an investigation into an illegal gambling facility at the location. During the search, investigators seized thousands of dollars and numerous illegal gambling devices, according to police. Officers arrested the owner of the business, Xiong Yang, 43, of Fort Mill, on charges of felonious illegal gambling.
Yang also had outstanding warrants from Mecklenburg County related to allegations that he previously operated a similar business. The investigation began after a citizen brought concerns about the business to the attention of police. Police said illegal gambling operations tend to attract and contribute to other criminal activity. “We appreciate the citizen who took the time to bring this business to our attention,” Police Chief Rhett Bolen said. “Community members are often the first to notice activity that does not look right, and that information can be extremely

Sewer overflow impacts creek
INDIAN TRAIL – An estimated 1,300 gallons of wastewater entered Crooked Creek in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin on Aug. 21 but the overflow was not of the magnitude to cause immediate danger to the health of residents or the environment, according to Union County. The overflow occurred from manholes near 4015 Sardis Church Road in Indian Trail. Water maintenance staff identified the overflow at about 7 p.m. Friday. Crews contained it by 9:15 p.m. The county the overflow was from heavy rainfall, and all pipes and equipment were operating properly prior to the overflow.
