Manahawkin- Linda Keenan, the Development Director at The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, sat down to talk about what the Humanitarian Gala means to The FoodBank, and to her personally. “The annual Gala is an opportunity to recognize members of our community who have gone above and beyond in our fight against hunger. And this year, the FoodBank is very pleased to honor Humanitarians, who include Jules Plangere Jr., Press Communications LLC; Wegmans; and our Junior Humanitarian Kyra Citron as well as our Agency Partner, St. Francis Community Center in Long Beach Island. The honorees are so important because they demonstrate the value and impact of neighbors helping neighbors. They are selected because of strong commitment to The FoodBank mission and support over many years. But most
As last year’s Honoree Ken Marowitz, the owner of Frank’s Big and Tall, puts it, “It was quite an honor for our family to be recognized by the FoodBank. We all felt it was really a wonderful tribute to our father who started our relationship with the FoodBank almost 30 years ago. He would have been embarrassed by the attention but proud of being recognized by such a worthwhile organization. Frank’s Big & Tall has been supported by the communities of Monmouth and Ocean Counties for over 50 years. We feel we have a civic duty to give back to the communities that have supported us. We chose the FoodBank because it directly helps our neighbors in need of basic essentials. No one should go hungry and we cannot imagine the situation some of our neighbors would be in without the food and resources that the FoodBank provides.” Linda admits that her favorite part of the Gala is when the honorees speak about why they support the FoodBank. Many of their messages are about relating to difficult times in their lives or in those they know, and how they know the FoodBank can make a difference. The FoodBank cannot be successful without their devoted volunteers, partners and donors who don’t just give once but make the FoodBank a part of their personal core values. For those thinking about getting involved in an organization, Markowitz has some advice. “Find something you have a passion for or hits close to home, then take the first step. Whether it is making a small donation or volunteering, attach yourself or your business to a local cause. You are guaranteed
to feel better and can make a small difference at the same time.” If you already are involved, consider stepping it up and give a little more to ensure our no one in our community ever goes hungry! Join a committee, think of creative ways to raise additional funds, use your network to help support the cause. Small steps can add up to leaps and bounds when your heart is in it, and luckily, the FoodBank provides many opportunities to get involved with various programs.

The Nissan Motor Company (known formerly as Datsun) has always been popular; lately it’s a force to be reckoned with. Nissan’s sales have increased in double digit amounts month after month. Nissan offers something its other Japanese and Korean cousins don’t do. It thinks outside the box for once! Most imports use the same model for business and try to fit everything they do to one business practice. Nissan is always trying to change what is “The Norm”. One of the biggest love it or hate it things is the use of their CVT Transmissions. Nissan is considered to be the best in the world when it comes to making CVT Transmissions, and it shows. Nissan is also one of the first vehicle brands to use push button entry and starting across most of their model line starting back before 2008 on most Nissans.

I also had heated and ventilated seats for both driver and passenger, along with a heated steering wheel. There is also a nice multi function display that pretty much tracks everything in your vehicle right in-between the tachometer and speedometer. All these features give the driver as much knowledge as possible about what’s happening right outside the cabin.
The 2015 Nissan Murano is no different when it comes to innovating, they were the first brand to make a Mid Size Crossover vehicle (Edge, M3, etc) all the way back in 2002. This Murano shall I say is one of the most impressive vehicles to be released in the past couple of years. The first thing that stands out at you is the new V shaped grill which is Nissan’s brand image for all the new vehicles going forward. You also have boomerang shaped LED accent lights that wrap around the main headlights. The next thing is Nissan’s 1st ever “Floating Roof” what this means is the back part of the roof looks like it’s not connected to the back part of the vehicle, making a very cool sight. The best part for me is the interior (which is the only thing that matters for me) this model has a white Cashmere leather interior with light wood accenting; this makes for a really smooth well crafted look. There are also little touches, when the vehicle is put into reverse both

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Motor Company and Petty’s Garage are teaming up to build a new 627-horsepower* Mustang GT – a limited-edition fastback inspired by the popular Petty’s Garage Mustang GT on display at last year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. “We received a tremendous amount of positive feedback about our Petty’s Garage Mustang GT displayed at the SEMA show,” said Jeff Whaley, Petty’s Garage COO. “With so much interest, we began to explore the possibility of building a limited run of the Petty’s Garage Mustang GT.” Two versions of the Petty’s Garage Mustang GT will be built this year; the Stage 1 version will be limited to 100 units, while the even more exclusive Stage 2 version will total 43 units. Final retail registrations for 2014 are now available, and, once again, four Honda models led the industry in retail registrations in their respective segments, according to Honda analysis of data from IHS Automotive. Repeating their 2013 performances, the Accord, Civic, CR-V and Odyssey were the top choices of individual U.S. car buyers in their respective segments in 20145. Based on retail registrations, Honda has three of the top six best-selling passenger vehicles in America. 10 TIPS TO GET YOUR CAR READY FOR SPRING
Spring is the time to “thank” our hard-working vehicles for their great winter performance with a maintenance overhaul. There are plenty of things you can do yourself to help your vehicle get back to 100%. A spring checkup can help uncover winter damage but there may be some components that are harder to check without requiring a skilled technician to pinpoint the problem. You should have your engine analyzed by a competent technician and determine the if any of your vehicles components are in need of servicing. Batteries, Plugs & Wires: All of these components give the spark to your your vehicle and they work extra hard when it’s cold. Winter stress can compromise their performance up to 60 percent. Test and replace old or weak batteries, plugs and wires, especially those more than three years old. It will certainly be cheaper than a tow and replacement down the road. Tire Pressure: Cold weather can reduce tire pressure, so make sure all tires, including the spare, are properly inflated and balanced. You can check the inside of your car door to find out what the proper air pressure should be. Belts and hoses: Inspect and replace worn or cracked belts, as well as hoses that are blistered, brittle or too soft. Belts and hoses older than five years, even if they look intact, might need to be replaced. Brakes: After a season of snow and ice it is advisable to inspect the brake system, including lines, hoses, parking brake and brake fluid for proper level. We rely on our brakes and something as simple as a brake pad change can help put an end to any worries about brake safety. Suspension & Wheel Alignment: Deep potholes aren’t friendly to shocks and struts. An inspection to determine wear or leaks can alleviate bigger issues down the road. Also having your wheels properly aligned after a season of tough conditions can help keep you on the road in a safe direction. Fluid Levels: There are lots of things to check but don’t skip over any of them: engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant and, yes, even windshield washer fluid. Commonly a brake fluid flush can get your sluggish brakes working as good as new and because this is recommended once a year there is no better time to get it done. Engine Air filter: Changing out the engine air filter is a quick job that can be done during any oil, brake or transmission fluid change. Windshield Wipers: Check them for wear and cracks and replace them if necessary, think about doing this each spring and fall. Clean the interior: It’s easy to use your car or truck as a storage area for all kinds of things (including useless junk and garbage), especially in the cold months when you don’t feel like cleaning your car in the freezing cold. Take the time to declutter your car, losing the extra weight can significantly increase your gas mileage too. It’s worth it. Clean the exterior: Take special care to address the undercarriage where road salt can eat away or corrode the metal. A thorough cleaning at a car wash should do the trick.

Lifeguard Training starts Wednesday, April 22 and runs through to Sunday, April 26. Do you want to be a lifeguard? This course is certified by the American Red Cross. Upon successful completion, participants will receive an American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED & Preventing Disease Transmission. All participants must complete the following prerequisites: Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick. 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence. 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke. The 100 yards may be a combination of front crawl and breaststroke. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Lincoln to bring back Continental name Brand to drop MKS sedan and split-wing grille Motor Co.’s top executives gave the order to call it the Continental, which Woodhouse described as a pivotal moment. “When that name was mentioned,” he said, “that reset expectations and the standards we have to meet.”
DETROIT -- Lincoln is resurrecting the Continental name and phasing out the brand’s signature split-wing grille. A full-size sedan named the Continental will go on sale in North America and China in 2016, executives said. Lincoln will then discontinue the MKS, which perennially has been one of the slowest-selling cars in its segment. The Continental Concept was unveiled at the New York auto show reveals the brand’s shift in styling direction emphasizing Lincoln’s focus on interior serenity and comfort as it bids for renewed relevance in the luxury market. The Continental will have a new 3.0-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that’s exclusive to Lincoln and a trapezoid-shaped grille with a repeating pattern mimicking the shape of Lincoln’s badge. The car has roughly the same dimensions as the MKS but more interior space, particularly in the rear to compete with long-wheelbase luxury sedans. The automaker isn’t saying which platform the Continental is built on and whether it is front- or rear-wheel drive. “When we have iconic names from the past, we think it’s a smart thing to do,” VanDyke told Automotive News. Early in development, “it was nice, but it didn’t blow anyone away,” Woodhouse said. Then, Ford
The concept, shown in “rhapsody blue,” features a glass roof that can electronically switch from clear to opaque, seats that adjust 30 ways -- including separate thigh supports for each leg -- and subtle door handles concealed in chrome beneath the windows. A chrome console bisects the length of the cabin, which has thick wool carpeting underfoot, soft Alcantara armrests and a satin headliner, all matching the exterior color. The rear seat was inspired by first-class airline travel, Woodhouse said. The passenger-side “ultra comfort” seat reclines, with a footrest that extends outward as the front seat moves forward. Thin Venetian leather travel cases attach magnetically to the back of both front seats. At the push of a button, an integrated tablet-supporting lap desk emerges from within the chrome console, which also has a cavity for chilling a bottle of champagne.
VanDyke said the split wing had been improving with each iteration -- early versions had vertical slats, vs. the horizontal ones used now -- but that the shape was difficult to adapt for all sizes of vehicles. The Continental’s grille, which will spread across the lineup with future redesigns, “sets such a new, unique and aspirational face of the brand going forward,” he said. The Continental’s introduction next year will complete Lincoln’s overhaul of its core lineup to invigorate sales. It follows the MKZ in 2013, the MKC last year and the MKX in the third quarter. Ford last year said it would spend more than $2.5 billion to transform Lincoln, adding two more nameplates by 2020, beyond the Continental. The Continental name dates to the 1930s, when it was developed as a one-off vehicle for Edsel Ford. It reached its pinnacle of styling and popularity in the 1960s but had lost most of its prestige -- and customer base -- by the time Ford discontinued it in 2002 after nine generations. -www.autonews.com
