President

Dear Friends of Catholic High,

Catholic High is 80 years strong! In September, 2019 we kicked off our 80th Anniversary during our 80 Years Strong: Lighting Our Way into the Future Assembly Celebration. This event honored the Sisters of Saint Francis, the Board of Trustees, Alumnae, Major Donors, Friends of Catholic High, Faculty & Staff, and Students & Parents. The celebration included lighting ceremonies, tributes to the school’s great history, founding sisters, students and staff, and a glimpse into the plans for the school’s future. Our new 80 YEARS sign was mounted atop the building and illuminates the school and the Belair-Edison community at night. In September, 1939, The Catholic High School of Baltimore opened its doors. The Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia worked hard to raise the money to construct this unique school that continues to stand tall on the hill of the Raming Estate lighting the way and empowering women through academic excellence. As a graduate and President of Catholic High, I am proud to be a part of this exciting time in the school’s history. Our 80th Campaign was designed to propel our school boldly into the future: Lighting the Way ~ Empowering Women ~ Transforming the World for another 80 Years. Thanks to the support from our loyal donors, our campaign goals have come to fruition: the renovation of the parking lot into a safe driveway to greatly enhance our western campus, our first $1.1 million project, the creation of a Biomedical Simulation Lab, and the growth of our Green & Gold Annual Giving and Endowment programs. This year, 106 seniors from the Class of 2020 were awarded over $18,000,000 in scholarships, grants, and awards, and 100% of them gained acceptance into colleges and universities such as Bucknell University, Boston University, University of San Diego, American University and University of Maryland Honors College. Our highly sought-after programs continue to attract creative and visionary young women who move beyond Catholic High to excel in a variety of arenas. During this historic year, we want to recognize the overwhelming generosity of all our donors. We are pleased to present this Annual Report acknowledging our many benefactors. Once again, our Board of Trustees and faculty/staff achieved 100% participation representing their commitment to our mission and students. Our Reunion Class Giving Program and Alumnae Awards are also highlighted in this report. Catholic High remains strong in its 80th year due to the commitment, vision, and passion of many volunteers, staff, friends and donors. 80th Anniversary Celebration

September 6, 2019 was a momentous day, as it marked the 80th Anniversary of The Catholic High School of Baltimore’s first day of school in 1939. The following week, Catholic High celebrated its 80th year with an Anniversary Assembly and welcomed back many Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, alumnae, major donors, and friends of Catholic High. The Anniversary Assembly officially launched the public phase of Catholic High’s 80th Campaign: Lighting the Way ~ Empowering Women ~ Transforming the World. In order to thank our sponsoring community for the rich history of the institution, Catholic High bused over 20 Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia from the Motherhouse in Aston, Pennsylvania to Edison Highway for the ceremony! The celebration began with a memorable lighting ceremony, as members of the community processed into the auditorium, candles in hand, with their lights shining brightly. The audience took a trip down memory lane to reminisce on the beginnings of Catholic High and how the school has transformed over the years. Current students of Catholic High were able to take part in the ceremony that day as well. Members of the Varsity Dance team captivated the audience as they performed one of their dance routines. Catholic High’s Theatre Program performed a few scenes from their recent spring musical, Wizard of Oz, which was first released in theaters in 1939. 5

Towards the end of the ceremony, Olivia Russell '20, Kayleigh Eckles '20, Regena Gomes '20, and Tochi Nwachinemere '20, propelled us into the future as they shared various ways Catholic High can thrive for 80 more years. Like all assemblies at Catholic High, the Anniversary Assembly concluded with the singing of our school song, Viva Catholic High! Following the assembly, major benefactors of Catholic High gathered in the Sr. Arnoldine O’Connell, OSF Dining Hall for the President’s Reception. Dr. Nazelrod gave her welcoming remarks and thanked our generous donors, for Catholic High’s strong 80 year history would not be without their support. There is still an opportunity to give to the 80th Campaign! If you make a gift to the campaign, your name will be placed on the 80th Anniversary Donor Wall that will be unveiled in the Catholic High Gallery at the close of the campaign. Your generosity ensures the continuation of our school and our superior academic programs that will educate young women for years to come!

Freshman

of the Year

Caroline Cucuzzella '23 As a Freshman at Catholic High, Caroline Cucuzzella '23 stood out among her peers and made a great impression on the Students of the Year Committee. Caroline delved into the many opportunities offered to her at Catholic High as a first-year student. She quickly became a member of the Green School Club, Robotics Club, Barbershop Club, the Mathletes, and was selected for the Student Ambassador Program. Caroline’s continuous love for the sciences is present each day in the classroom. No matter the course, “I thoroughly enjoy the hands-on learning methods that can be found in a science lab.” Outside of the classroom, Caroline enjoys acting in the fall dramas and spring musicals. Being a part of the Theatre Program at Catholic High became the most meaningful to Caroline during her freshman year. Even though she has always had a passion for acting, it grew stronger as Caroline met some of her closest friends in the Theatre Program. In her spare time, Caroline enjoys staying active through swimming and enjoys the creativity of painting and singing. She also remains close to her faith by attending weekly Youth Group meetings at her parish. Like many Catholic High students, Caroline’s favorite tradition is Hello Day. She believes this tradition is special to many because of the welcoming feeling one receives from the community. “I cannot wait until I’m the one welcoming my little sister!” said Caroline. After graduating from Catholic High, Caroline hopes to pursue a major in Marine Biology at a college in the northeast. When asked why Caroline prefers Marine Biology, she stated, “I have always been intrigued by the sea, especially since we know less about it than we do about space.” Caroline understands that her interests may change over time, but she is confident Catholic High will help lead her to a career that is meant for her. Caroline is thankful to have received the title of Freshman of the Year. To her, it signifies that her hard work and effort at Catholic High does not go unnoticed. “It also filled me with a sense of school pride and confirmed that Catholic High is where I truly belong,” shared Caroline.

Sophomore

of the Year

Emily Baligush '22 Emily Baligush '22 let her light shine brightly during her second year at Catholic High, which earned her the title of Sophomore of the Year. As a Student Ambassador and Co-Captain of the JV Basketball team, Emily lives by example each day in the Catholic High community. Catholic High has given Emily numerous opportunities that have made her experiences unforgettable. She has made memories with her teammates who have become her close friends and with her teachers who have become her mentors. Emily’s favorite class as a Sophomore was Algebra II with Mr. Carolan. “He is a wonderful teacher and I’ve had some of the most memorable moments in his classroom,” says Emily. Emily’s most cherished tradition is Hello Day, when the Senior Big Sisters welcome the Freshmen Little Sisters to Catholic High. “Being officially welcomed to Catholic High by our Big Sisters is what makes this day so special,” says Emily. She remembers her Hello Day as a day of suspense, waiting for the assembly filled with skits, songs, and school spirit! After graduating from Catholic High, Emily plans to attend college to follow in her father’s footsteps by becoming a Systems Engineer. Catholic High has empowered Emily to strive for success and meet her goals. She hopes to work alongside her father one day, something she aspired to do at a very young age. Her plan is to major in Systems Engineering and her favorite quote, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” describes Emily’s work ethic in the classroom and demonstrates how she is ready to transform the world! Emily shares that being named Sophomore of the Year is an honor and a privilege. Emily explains that her classmates are “just as deserving,” but it is truly an honor to be recognized for her hard work and dedication inside and outside of the classroom.

Junior

of the Year

Cristen Roche '21 Junior of the Year, Cristen Roche '21, has made her mark in the classroom, as well as in extra-curricular activities, clubs, and her parish. As a member of four honor societies and three varsity sports teams, Cristen excels as a student and teammate as a result of using the leadership skills Catholic High instilled in her since freshman year. In addition to playing a key role in many of Catholic High’s clubs and organizations, during her Junior year, Cristen was elected as President of the Athletic Association and was a member of the Student Ambassadors Program, Student Council, Biomedical Steering Committee, and Operation Smile Committee. Her involvement in various activities at Catholic High has made her a well-rounded student. Cristen’s Hello Day experiences have made this tradition one of her favorites. As a member of Student Council, Cristen played an important role in planning one of the most spirited assemblies of the school year, the Hello Day Assembly. Now a Senior, Cristen shares, “My Big Sister made my Freshman year so special and I can’t wait to do the same for my three Little Sisters this year.” After receiving her diploma, Cristen plans to attend a four-year college to major in Speech-Language Pathology. She believes her caring personality will help her succeed as a speech pathologist. Cristen’s long-term goal is to earn her doctorate degree in order to work with pediatric oncology patients. “I realized that I would love to work with pediatric oncology patients after volunteering with the Cool Kids Campaign,” said Cristen. The Cool Kids Campaign is an organization which improves the quality of life for critically ill oncology patients and their families. Cristen shared that being named Junior of the Year solidified the feeling that she is heading in the right direction as a student and as a person. “It gives me the confidence and courage to pursue my dreams knowing that I have a community that supports me!” exclaimed Cristen. Cristen is excited to begin her Senior year and looks forward to the endless opportunities that college can bring.

Miss

Catholic High Alyssa Racosky '20 “Be scared and do it anyway,” is one of Senior, Alyssa Racosky’s favorite quotes that motivates her to succeed in her academics and extra-curricular activities at Catholic High. A member of the Varsity Dance Team, Student Ambassadors Program, Student Council, Biomedical Steering Committee, Art Club, and TCHS-TV, Alyssa is a multi-talented and artistic student leader. When asked about her favorite activity at Catholic High, Alyssa shared, “Out of all the various activities and clubs I joined, being a Lead Senior Ambassador was the most meaningful to me. It gave me the opportunity to connect with so many prospective families and interact with the future of Catholic High.” Alyssa’s experience and enthusiasm as an Ambassador for the Enrollment Office, in addition to her ability to excel in so many different activities and roles, are what made her an ideal choice for Miss Catholic High. Alyssa was awarded the title and had the honor of crowning the Blessed Mother during this year’s socially distanced May Crowning Ceremony. Alyssa’s favorite memory of Catholic High was being a member of the Varsity Dance team. “During my four years on the team, I had the privilege to dance with the most amazing teammates and had the opportunity to compete in Orlando, Florida,” said Alyssa. Her talents in the arts did not stop on the dance floor. She also let her creativity shine in the art room during her time at Catholic High. Alyssa shared, “My favorite class would have to be Art. I loved being able to learn from such a talented instructor and being able to grow and express myself as an artist.” Alyssa credits Catholic High for giving her numerous opportunities that allowed her to flourish into the multi-talented young woman she is today. “It’s truly an honor,” says Alyssa, as she reflects on what it means to be chosen as Miss Catholic High 2020. Catholic High instilled a strong work ethic in Alyssa which she will carry with her into college. Alyssa stated that her work ethic “will translate into [her] success in college and will greatly impact [her] future in a positive way.”

Franciscan Heritage Award Sister Kathleen Dauses, OSF '61 Sister Kathy grew up in the Hamilton neighborhood of Baltimore City and attended St. Dominic School. After graduating from Catholic High, she attended St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland and received

a Master’s degree in education from Loyola University. Sr. Kathy has been a teacher or a principal at several Catholic schools, including at St. Charles, St. Michael, and St. Dominic in Baltimore, St. Christine School in Ohio, Our Lady Queen of Peace in Washington, D.C., and St. Mary’s in Georgia. Sr. Kathy eventually changed her ministry from education to healthcare, gaining certificates in the Sacred Art of Dying, Spiritual Direction, and Reflexology. She is also is an Advanced Reiki Practitioner. Since 2006, Sr. Kathy has served as the Chaplain at Stella Maris Hospice providing spiritual guidance and comfort to the dying and their families. She remains involved at Catholic High as a member of the Board of Trustees and serves as Chair of the Mission and Ministry Committee of the Board.

Mother Generosa McCafferty Distinguished Alumna Award Patricia Springer '00 Ms. Springer is a talented professional in human resources who balances a career as an Employee Benefits Specialists in the Johns Hopkins Health System with volunteer work at her church. After Catholic High, she graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Management and she recently earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration at University of Maryland University College. Ms. Springer’s 20 year career in human resources includes experience at Johns Hopkins Health System, the Maryland Transit Administration, and the Baltimore County Government. She is a former Notary Public, a member of the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, and in 2015 was recognized as a top State of Maryland Retirement Coordinator. Ms. Springer has 18 years of experience in youth ministry and mentors a group of high school students at the Church of the Nativity. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her 10 nieces and nephews for whom she tries to be a good example. Ms. Springer gives back to Catholic High by serving as the Co-Chair of the Alumnae Association and is responsible for planning the Alumnae Socials twice a year. She volunteers at many of Catholic High’s alumnae events and last year, inducted our graduating Seniors into the Alumnae Association at the end-of-year Senior Awards Assembly.

Mother Generosa McCafferty Distinguished Alumna Award Eleanor DeCarlo Romadka '51 (Awarded Posthumously) Mrs. Romadka was a proud graduate of Catholic High and gave back to her Alma Mater in numerous ways. The philanthropy of Mrs. Romadka and her husband has made a remarkable difference at Catholic High. Catholic High’s Library, the DeCarlo Library, is named in memory of Mrs. Romadka’s sister, Margaret DeCarlo Wolf of the class of 1953, and the Gymnasium is named the Eleanor DeCarlo Romadka Gymnasium in Honor of the Class of 1951. A picture of Mr. & Mrs. Romadka with Archbishop Lori at the dedication ceremony in 2015 hangs in our gym. For several years, Mrs. Romadka chaired the Gala Committee, was in our 75th Campaign Cabinet, and was a tireless advocate of Catholic High in countless ways. Most recently, she and Mr. Romadka gifted the Eleanor DeCarlo Romadka Endowed Scholarship to Catholic High. Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod '68 had the honor of giving the eulogy for Mrs. Romadka at her funeral. Her words included, “We are a better and stronger Catholic High because Ellie let her light and good works shine before others, and in doing so, she showed us how to let our own light shine.” It was no coincidence that Mrs. Romadka went to God on May 28, 2019, the day of Catholic High’s graduation. Both Mrs. Romadka and the graduates began a new life on that day. 16
