CQC Backlog Sparks Widespread Concern Leading to “Months with No Response”
Concerns being flagged to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) by healthcare staff and members of the public are going months without a response, MPs have heard. The regulator’s new chief executive estimates it is facing a backlog of about 5,000 notifications of concerns, and the body, responsible for ensuring safety and quality in health and social care, is now facing mounting pressure following revelations of demoralised, stressed and overworked staff, and a system strug-
gling under the weight of demand. CQC Chief Executive Sir Julian Hartley and outgoing Chair Ian Dilks faced questions before a Health and Social Care Committee about the regulator’s effectiveness, with committee members expressing alarm at the potential risks to safeguarding and public trust.
