Calls for Social Care Reform to Alleviate NHS Pressures Following Publication of Damning Darzi Report
The “dire state of social care” is highlighted as one the reasons that the NHS is in a “critical condition”, a government adviser has warned, in a report calculated to provide a blueprint for a 10-year plan for the health service. In a damning report commissioned by health and social care secretary Wes Streeting, Lord (Ara) Darzi, the report author said “austerity and a starvation of investment” during the 2010s, “confusion” and “fragmentation” caused by the 2012 reorganisation of the service and Covid had left the NHS in a state of “disrepair”, adding that honesty is needed if healthcare in the UK is to be improved, highlighting many issues. 10-year plan for reforming the health service. The study argues the NHS is facing rising demand for care as people live longer in ill health, coupled with low productivity in hospitals and poor staff morale. Lord Darzi said: “Although I have worked in the NHS for more than 30 years, I have been shocked by what I have found during this investigation – not just in the health service but in the state of the nation’s health.” “We want to deliver high quality care for all but far too many people are waiting for too long and in too many clinical areas, quality of care has gone backwards.”
