Government Scraps Cap on Social Care Costs... Amid Accusations of “Failing a Generation”
The government has scrapped the planned cap on care costs to help tackle an alleged £22bn black hole in the public finances left by the previous administration. Sir Andrew Dilnot, whose government-backed commission proposed a cap on social care costs 13 years ago, described the changes as “a tragedy”. Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced earlier this week (July 29) that the adult social care charging reforms, due to be implemented in October 2025, would be
cancelled, saving £1.1bn by the end of 2025-26. The chancellor said: “Mr Speaker, adult social care was also neglected by the previous government. The sector needs reform to improve care and to support staff. In the previous parliament, the government made costly commitments to introduce adult social care charging reforms.”
