Councils Could Face a £5bn Funding Gap… ...With £467 Million Cut to Adult Social Services
Local authorities are facing a £5.2bn funding shortfall by April 2026, according to a new analysis by the BBC’s Shared Data Unit, the analysis also found that on top of cuts, town hall heads are expected to use up £1.1bn of reserves to balance the books this year. The BBC’s analysis of 190 upper-tier authorities in the UK revealed that the average council now faces a projected deficit of £33m by 2025/26, a 60% rise
from £20m two years ago. The analysis also revealed that councils expect to be £5.2bn short of balancing their books by April 2026 after making £2.5bn of planned cuts, with at least £467m of these cuts being from adult social services.
