Immigration Reforms Blamed for Deepening Social Care Recruitment Crisis

Trade union UNISON has warned that the Government's immigration reforms are exacerbating the social care staffing crisis, as new figures reveal a dramatic collapse in international recruitment that has not been offset by any rise in domestic hiring. According to UNISON's analysis of the latest industry employment data, the number of international recruits entering care roles fell from 105,000 in 2023/24

to just 30,000 in 2025/26. Over the same period, the number of care posts filled by British workers dropped by 70,000 — undermining the Government's argument that curbing overseas recruitment would boost domestic uptake.
