UK Sets Out £1 Billion Strategy to Tackle Future Pandemics
The UK’s readiness for future pandemics is being overhauled through the publication of a new Pandemic Preparedness Strategy, backed by around £1 billion of investment in health protection measures including enhancing our access to essential vaccines and therapeutics, improving the nation’s pandemic surveillance systems and expanding the UK’s ability to roll out testing to the whole population. Earlier this month the Chair of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, Baroness Heather Hallett published her third report which concludes that the UK’s healthcare sys-
tems “came close to collapse”. Ultimately it “coped, but only just” the report said. Module 3, the third of the Inquiry’s 10 investigations examined the impact of Covid-19 on healthcare systems across the four nations, investigating how governments and society responded to the pandemic, the capacity of healthcare systems to adapt and the impact on patients, their loved ones and healthcare workers.
