Growing Adult Social Care Sector Contributing £77.8 Billion To England’s Economy… But Domestic Recruitment And Retention Challenges Persist
England’s adult social care sector has continued its growth trajectory in 2024/25, with the latest report from Skills for Care released today (October 15) showing a 2.2% increase in total posts compared to the previous year. The sector now contributes £77.8 billion to the UK economy – a significant 12.2% rise that underscores its vital role not only as a provider of essential services but as a major economic player. However, the annual ‘State of the adult social care sector and workforce in
England’ report has also highlighted persistent challenges facing the industry, particularly around domestic recruitment and long-term workforce sustainability. This increase in economic contribution is largely driven by more filled posts in social care and an increase in the National Living Wage, resulting in an increase in average pay. This shows that improved workforce capacity and pay in social care brings economic benefits for wider society.
