Overseas Care Staff Show Long-Term Commitment But Visa Crackdown Means Recruitment Pressures Mount
Overseas health and social care workers are among the migrants most likely to remain in the UK long term, according to a major new report from the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), published as care leaders warn that tightening immigration rules are deepening workforce shortages across the sector. The MAC report comes as Office for National Statistics (ONS) data revealed that net migration in the year to December 2025 was 171,000 - its lowest level
since 2012, excluding the Covid pandemic. The MAC analysis, which examined Skilled Worker visa data between 2014 and 2024, found that migrant workers employed in human health and social work recorded significantly stronger long-term retention rates than most other industries.
