Donor Spotlight: Patti Reed Patti Reed became a donor to The Cancer Foundation in 2014 after becoming aware of TCF while she was attending appointments at University Cancer & Blood Center with her late husband, John Reed. “In those long visits, I would read anything I could find, including the mission statement of TCF. Our eyes were opened to the struggles of others in the hours we spent there weekly.” “I selected TCF for friends to donate in John’s memory because we had seen with our own eyes the financial struggles families face with a cancer diagnosis. We were blessed to not struggle financially during John’s illness, but we met many who did.”
“I continue to support TCF because the giving is local and stays local. It helps families like those we sat with during those long chemo appointments.”

Christina Mansfield, Hart County resident and stage 4 lymphoma cancer patient, began receiving assistance from The Cancer Foundation (TCF) this year after she was referred by oncology social worker Dorotheann Metzinger with Georgia Cancer Specialist. In April, TCF provided Christina with nutritional assistance and transportation cards. She says, “This assistance greatly eased the stress I had about my finances. I was able to pay for my groceries and get to my treatment appointments. This relief of stress was a weight lifted off my shoulders!”

Without an organization like TCF, so many patients would be unable to properly care for themselves and take care of their finances while in treatment. They helped me to focus on my treatment and feeling better!

Pink Out Cookout The Cancer Foundation partnered with Clearview Regional Medical Center in Monroe, GA to host the inaugural Pink Out Cookout, held on Wednesday, October 18th in the Clearview cafeteria.

or $10, attendees treated themselves to a delicious meal of hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, potato salad and dessert, prepared by the staff of Lenita Franklin, Clearview’s director of diet. 200 meals were served to the residents of Walton County, raising almost $5,000 for TCF’s Financial Assistance Program. Two members of the Walton County committee who helped plan the event are Lee Malcom and Kathy Timm. Both women are also cancer survivors. “Three years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and learned firsthand about the hardships that a cancer diagnosis of any kind can cause the patient and their family,” Timm said. “I was a lucky one. I had a supporting family and workplace that worked with me during that time, but so many other patients do not.”
While working in Clearview’s radiation department, Timm has seen the diagnosis of cancer in a scared patient on a daily basis. “I have witnessed close co-workers with family members that have no insurance trying to arrange treatment, transportation, or not being able to pay for certain everyday things. I knew I wanted to get involved to help patients that were less fortunate and provide a way for patients to get the care they needed.” “I volunteered at Tri to Beat Cancer in August and those inspiring two days touched my heart and I knew The Cancer Foundation was the organization I wanted to get involved with. They provide assistance to patients for everyday living expenses and Walton County seems to have an epidemic of cancer,” Timm said. To date, TCF has given over $136,000 to more than 360 local cancer patients.

Over 48,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the state of Georgia in 2017 alone. Donate by December 31, 2017 to help us reach our goals! The future is hard to predict, but one thing we know is The Cancer Foundation (TCF) will need resources to fuel its mission in the years to come. This is the very reason TCF has embarked on
creating the March to a Million endowment campaign. In June 2016, Jim Wallace and Jessica Wallace Tolbert gave TCF the opportunity of a lifetime with a match gift donation of $250,000 to begin the endowment journey. TCF donors generously answered the call and raised $250,000 in the first three months of the campaign.
This sprint triathlon has been a large fundraiser over the past nine years, bringing in local athletes, as well as athletes from South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama.

IRA / Retirement Plan
We will work with you and your professional advisor to create estate planning strategies that will preserve your charitable wishes long beyond your lifetime. Through a variety of deferred options, you and your loved ones can enjoy financial security and provide resources for northeast Georgia cancer patients for decades to come.
If you have already created a sound estate plan that achieves all objectives and takes care of your family, using an IRA to make a current gift or a gift-by-will could avoid both income and estate taxes. And by using an IRA to establish a Donor Advised Fund, your family can remain involved in the grant making process.
Give Where You Work
Bequest
Donors can specify a gift in their will or revocable trust. All assets are retained during life and the donor’s estate may receive a tax deduction for the bequest. The gift is made upon death which creates a permanent endowment fund for TCF.
Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)
Create a CRT, name a fund at TCF as the beneficiary, and receive an immediate tax deduction. Receive income from the gift for life or for a specified number of years, after which your TCF fund will receive the remaining assets.
Many different companies allow their employees to participate in different match giving programs, which allows your employer to match your gift to TCF! Here is a list of some companies with employee match giving programs: AAA, Aetna, Amgen, Bank of America, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Coca-Cola Company, Genentech, General Mills, Georgia Power, Home Depot, Merrill Lynch & Company, Morgan Stanley, Pfizer, Wells Fargo. Ask your employer if your company has a match giving program that you can take advantage of!
The Cancer Foundation’s newest hire, Francie Pastor, has been employed with The Cancer Foundation since July 2017 and is a Watkinsville native. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with a B.S. in International Trade and Spanish minor and has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Health Communications. Francie spent six years in Washington DC, where she worked on health and education policy in the U.S Senate. As the Financial Program Administrator, Francie oversees applications for financial assistance. Her favorite part of her job is calling patients to let them know that the Foundation has paid their bill. Francie is passionate about reading, travel, and yoga, and hopes one day to earn her certification to teach yoga to cancer patients.
