Dear Members, It has been a pleasure to welcome so many new members to The British Club over the summer period. I hope you and your families already feel very much at home within our Club community.

Our recent New Members’ Evening at Eden Hall was a wonderful occasion, bringing together new members, existing members, committee members, section representatives and management. It was pleasing to see everyone enjoying the evening and experiencing the warm welcome that sits at the heart of the Club. My thanks go to the Main Committee, subcommittee members and section convenors for helping introduce our new members to the many activities, facilities and friendships available across the Club.
October promises to be another lively month at the Club, with a full calendar of activities for members of all ages. For our younger members, the Halloween celebrations will bring plenty of Haunted House fun and games, while adults can look forward to the Wizards and Witches Wine Dinner at Mountbatten. These occasions are always a great reminder of the variety and energy that make the Club such a special place throughout the year. I would like to remind members that our British Club Annual General Meeting [AGM] will be held on Wednesday 25th November 2026. This gives all eligible members the opportunity to hear the Club achievements in the past 12 months and to get a glimpse of what is coming in the next financial year. We provide food and refreshment for all attendees and it’s a good time to also participate in the Club governance. I encourage you to put this date in your diary. Finally, thank you to all our members for the warmth, support and spirit you continue to bring to the Club. It is the people who make The British Club such a wonderful community, and I look forward to seeing many of you in the weeks ahead.

Dear Members, It has been another lively month at the Club, with many opportunities to come together, welcome new faces and celebrate our wider community. Our third charity car wash was a wonderful success, with Equal-Ark Singapore Ltd onsite and six ponies giving families the chance to meet and greet them. The event achieved our highest participation to date and was very well received. A cheque for $10,000 was presented on the day to one of the charity’s directors, a meaningful contribution made possible by the generosity and enthusiasm of our members.

We also came together for the annual Staff Dinner and Dance, this year with a Kampong theme. The evening was very well received, and it was wonderful to recognise colleagues through the presentation of long-service awards. Thank you to everyone involved in making such a memorable evening for the team. Finally, excitement is building as we look ahead to the arrival of our new Flagship Technogym fitness centre in December. With state-of-the-art equipment on the way, it will be the perfect place to start or renew your New Year resolutions. Charity Car Wash and Meet-and-Greet with Ponies Sunday, 13th September Members came together for a fun-filled day of giving at our Charity Car Wash in support of EQUAL+. While cars were washed in exchange for donations, families enjoyed meeting, petting and taking photos with EQUAL+’s friendly ponies. The event raised funds for a meaningful cause and showcased the Club’s strong community spirit.

With over 20 years of finance leadership experience in the hospitality and events industry, she brings a wealth of expertise, strategic insight and a proven track record of driving business performance across some of Singapore’s leading hospitality organisations. Throughout her career, Suet Hong has held senior finance positions with renowned establishments including Sofitel Singapore City Centre, Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre and Park Hotel Group. Her extensive experience encompasses financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, risk management and strategic business partnering, providing her with a deep understanding of the financial and operational dynamics that drive success in the hospitality sector. Small Hands, Small Worlds: A Morning at Toh Yi Community Garden By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025
Nine-year-old Nick crouched over a glass bowl, orange from head to toe, and asked the question that would define the morning: “Can I make a landscape for my fish?” It was not a question anyone had planned for, but it captured exactly what The British Club’s Terrarium Workshop and Garden Tour set out to do: give children the raw materials of nature and let their imaginations take over. On Saturday, 22nd August, 30 children and their parents gathered at Toh Yi Community Garden, a plot more than 12 years in the making, for a guided tour and hands-on terrarium workshop. Over three hours, the activity became a quiet lesson in how community, nature and generational knowledge come together. The elders leading the session had a gift for turning gardening techniques into language children could understand. Soil was pressed into place “gently, like a dumpling” – a phrase that drew laughter but also stayed with them. It was a small example of how knowledge traditionally shared through kitchens and gardens can continue when space is made for it. The children noticed the plants long before they noticed the lesson. Six-year-old Skylar enjoyed the sensory experience: “A lot of nice plants and I can smell it.” For Samara, one scent stood out: “The mint was the best one, it smelled like Colgate!” Nine-year-old Luke, studying the moss and stones, asked, “Is it edible? It looks like M&Ms!” His twin sister Maia had another highlight: “My favourite part was creating it myself.” That desire to build something with their own hands and take it home ran through every conversation. The parents’ reflections completed the picture. Stephanie, watching her daughter work with the soil, observed, “We don’t see this, so it’s a different experience” – a reminder of how removed daily life in Singapore can feel from a working garden. Eileen described the morning as “very interesting and very educational.” This is what made the experience special: three generations sharing the same patch of garden, each bringing something different. The elders brought patience and knowledge. Parents brought an appreciation of an experience their children rarely encounter in everyday life. The children brought curiosity, which turned out to be exactly enough. Thirty miniature gardens went home that morning. What remained, rooted a little deeper in Toh Yi’s soil, was something less easily potted: a community reminded that nature, and one another, are best discovered together.

TANGLIN TRUST SCHOOL
IS LOOKING TO THE FUTURE It’s a well-known fact that Tanglin Trust School is the oldest British School in Southeast Asia. Founded in Singapore over 100 years ago by Anne Griffiths-Jones OBE, to provide high quality British education to children of expatriate families, who would otherwise have been sent back to England to board. Tanglin has always evolved alongside Singapore, with its history shaped by a series of significant locations – from its founding at The Tanglin Club, to the historic black-and-white house of ‘Matheran’ on Tanglin Road, and the well known locations of Raeburn Park and Winchester, before its move to Portsdown Road in 1971. More than 55 years later, Portsdown Road remains Tanglin’s home – and this continuity has provided stability for generations of families, while allowing Tanglin to evolve and grow.
But what comes next? Tanglin is now looking ahead to the next chapter as it builds on 100 years of educational excellence, and has officially secured the lease on its Portsdown Road campus for another 30 years. With its home secured until 2056, Tanglin is looking confidently to the future and reimagining a campus that will provide world-class facilities, with cutting-edge technology, combined with sustainable design to elevate every aspect of the student learning experience. 20 OCT 2026
The Tanglin Master Plan Development Project The Master Plan Development Project will create inspiring spaces for learning, growth and community, designed to support generations of students to come. Tanglin CEO, Craig Considine, explains the aim is to ‘design spaces that inspire rather than confine, and environments that adapt to learning rather than shaping it. Our facilities are evolving to support the educational experiences of tomorrow, not the traditions of yesterday.’ In addition to the lease extension, Tanglin has also been granted a lease on an additional 0.5-hectare plot of adjoining land on one-north crescent. Together, these developments increase the school’s footprint by 11%, creating an exciting opportunity to shape the campus of the future. It is an ambitious vision, with major new developments planned, including an Early Years Centre, a new Sports Centre and a purpose-built Senior School. The project will be implemented in phases through to 2038, with virtually every building and facility across the campus being upgraded, renovated or repurposed. The first phase will see the construction of the new Senior School beginning in 2027, a landmark building that will become the largest on the Tanglin campus. Designed by P&T Consultants and WilkinsonEyre, the 12-level building will have more than 23,500 square metres of gross floor area — around 50% larger than the Tanglin Centenary Building. More than simply providing additional space, the new Senior School is conceived around the changing needs of young people and the education they will need for the future. A NEW ROADMAP FOR BRITISH EXPATS:
WHAT THE UK’S NEW RESIDENCEBASED TAX RULES MEAN? For some longer-term British expats, determining their potential UK Inheritance Tax (IHT) exposure has historically been a particularly nuanced issue, with no straightforward answer. Until April 2025, an individual’s domicile was central to determining whether their worldwide assets fell within the scope of UK IHT. Leaving the UK to live overseas for an extended period did not, in itself, change an individual’s domicile, and whether their domicile had changed was determined by their circumstances and long-term intentions. The UK Government has now replaced this domicile-based approach with a new framework based on long-term UK residence, providing a more defined basis for determining whether, and for how long, an individual’s non-UK assets will remain within the scope of UK IHT. The UK long-rerm residence test Under the new rules, an individual’s longterm UK residence status determines whether their non-UK assets fall within the scope of UK IHT. For long-term UK residents, worldwide assets generally fall within the scope of UK IHT. For those who are not longterm UK residents, UK IHT will generally apply only to UK-situs assets, subject to the specific rules that apply to particular assets and circumstances. An individual will be considered a long-term UK resident if they have been UK resident for at least 10 of the previous 20 tax years. This means that a British expat who has recently left the UK will remain a long-term UK resident for a number of years, depending on their previous UK residence history, and their non-UK assets will therefore remain within the scope of UK IHT until their long-term residence status changes. Once an individual leaves the UK, the length of time they remain a long-term UK resident depends on their previous UK residence history. Someone who has been UK resident for 10 to 13 of the previous 20 tax years will remain a long-term UK resident for a further three tax years, with the period increasing by one year for each additional year of UK residence, up to a maximum of ten years. The position changes again after ten consecutive tax years of non-UK residence. At that point, the individual’s previous UK residence history falls out of the long-term residence calculation. If they subsequently return to the UK, they will therefore start again with a new 20-year look-back period, meaning they would need to build up 10 years of UK residence before becoming a long-term UK resident again. a potentially valuable planning opportunity for British expats who have spent a long period living overseas and are considering a return to the UK. From 6 April 2025, the UK introduced the Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime, which replaced the previous remittance basis, which was only available to non-UK domiciled individuals. Under the new rules, individuals who return to the UK after at least ten consecutive tax years of non-UK residence can claim relief on qualifying foreign income and gains arising during their first four years of UK residence. Individuals can choose in which of those four years to claim the relief, depending on their circumstances. For a long-term British expatriate planning a return to the UK, this can provide a valuable opportunity to manage the timing of investment disposals, income withdrawals and other financial decisions. Qualifying foreign income and gains on which relief is claimed are not subject to UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax, and the relieved amounts can be brought into the UK without an additional UK tax charge. Careful consideration of what is realised or withdrawn, and when, can help returning expats make the most of the relief available under the FIG regime, which can form an important part of planning a return to the UK.
A clearer roadmap for expats The UK’s new long-term UK residence rules represent a significant change for British expats, but they also provide a clearer framework for understanding an individual’s UK IHT exposure. Rather than relying on the more subjective concept of domicile, individuals can now look to their UK residence history to understand how the rules will apply to them. For those who plan ahead, the changes can provide not only greater clarity around their potential UK tax exposure, but also opportunities to make more informed decisions about the timing of their financial decisions and how they structure their assets. THE SKILLS THAT AI CANNOT REPLACE For parents, the rise of artificial intelligence raises an uncomfortable question: what should children be learning now for jobs that may not yet exist? AI is already transforming how people write, research, analyse, design and make decisions. By the time today’s children enter the workforce, many routine tasks may be automated or fundamentally reshaped. The instinctive response is to teach more technology: more coding, more digital literacy, more AI tools. Those proficiencies of course matter, but in a world where AI can generate information instantly, the most valuable skills may be those that are hardest to automate. Let’s consider these: creativity, resilience, communication, judgement, and the ability to work with others – and how schools, such as those in the UK, are adapting to help students develop them. Creativity. As AI becomes better at producing first drafts and predictable solutions, schools have even more reason to give children opportunities to create something genuinely their own. This can happen through design and engineering, entrepreneurship, extended research projects, or interdisciplinary challenges. The emphasis moves from completing a prescribed task to identifying a problem, developing an idea, testing it and improving it. Resilience. Perhaps the most important preparation for an uncertain future is learning how to respond when the first solution does not work. Research projects, expeditions, sport, performances and competitions put pupils into situations where progress requires persistence, feedback and adaptation. These experiences matter because nobody can confidently predict exactly which technical skills will be required in 2040; the ability to learn and relearn will undoubtedly be essential. Communication. AI may produce an impressive presentation, but a young person still has to defend an argument, persuade an audience and work through disagreement. Debating, public speaking, drama, student publications and academic societies give pupils repeated opportunities to articulate their ideas. Take, for example, the “SuperCurriculum” at Harrow School, which is specifically designed to extend intellectual development beyond the exam syllabus. 24 OCT 2026
Working with others. The future workplace will likely be collaborative and interdisciplinary, and children begin working closely with others at a young age to solve problems together. The IB curriculum, for example, requires collaborative project work, while schools that use the Harkness method encourage student-led discussions and autonomy, helping to build confidence and teamwork. What is interesting is that AI is not simply adding another subject to the timetable. It is beginning to change the way some schools think about education itself. In the UK, the Department for Education is now providing schools with guidance and training on the safe and effective use of AI, while individual schools are moving further ahead with dedicated AI courses, staff specialising in digital education and programmes that combine technology with ethics, critical thinking and creativity. Questions that parents may wish to consider as they choose a school for their child include: How is this school teaching pupils to use AI intelligently rather than depend on it? Where will my child learn to present and defend an idea? What opportunities are there to build something, lead something or solve a genuine problem with others? And when things go pear-shaped, will they have a chance to adapt and try again? These are increasingly important questions when choosing an education for a world we cannot yet fully predict. Saturday, 14th November 2026 • 7:30 pm Award-winning author and food historian Khir Johari returns to The British Club following his highly successful event in 2024, presenting another exceptional evening of culinary discovery. For this special six-course dinner, Khir draws inspiration from his acclaimed book, The Food of Singapore Malays: Gastronomic Travels Through the Archipelago, his extensive personal collection of recipes and a fascinating 1929 cookbook, The “Mems” Own Cooker Book by Mrs W. E. Kinsey. Originally written for expatriate households in Malaya, the cookbook features 420 practical and economical recipes that adapted British-style cooking to local ingredients and conditions. By bringing these historical influences together with the rich traditions of Malay gastronomy, Khir has created a menu that offers a distinctive taste of our shared culinary heritage. The evening begins with Kueh Bakar Berlauk Beef, followed by Udang Kota Gading Limau Purut, an aromatic coconut-based prawn dish with kaffir lime leaves. A refreshing Calamansi Sorbet Intermezzo prepares the palate for Ayam Masak Merah, served with fragrant Nasi Jagung and Cucumber and Pineapple Achar. To complete the experience, guests will enjoy Agar-Agar Rose and Lychee Lapis, followed by a classic Sago Pudding served with coconut cream and palm molasses. A thoughtfully curated vegetarian menu will also be available. Free-flow ginger flower sparkling and still juice will be served throughout dinner, with alcoholic beverages available for purchase from the cash bar. New Technogym Equipment Arriving This December
A first look at the Technogym Excite Live Climb 7000 and Technogym Skillup, soon to join the gym equipment line up at The British Club Singapore.
The Club’s gym will welcome two exciting additions this December as part of the upcoming equipment list: the Technogym Excite Live Climb 7000 and the Technogym Skillup. Both machines bring a strong mix of performance, digital guidance and member friendly design, giving members more variety across cardio, strength and functional training. The Excite Live Climb 7000 is a premium stair climber designed for powerful, low impact cardio training. Its climbing motion helps build endurance while working the legs and glutes, with a stable feel that supports both steady workouts and more intense sessions. The large Live console adds an engaging training experience, with guided content and performance tracking to help members stay focused and motivated.The Technogym Skillup offers something different: a complete upper body and core workout inspired by the movement of cross-country skiing. It allows members to switch between cardio and power-based training, making it ideal for those looking to improve strength, stamina and overall conditioning in one compact station. Its smooth pull action and clear display make it accessible for regular training, functional fitness and high intensity intervals.

Masters Swimmers Back in the Lanes By Nathalie Farrow, Member of the Club since August, 2020
Welcome back to the pool, swimmers! The summer holidays are behind us, tan lines are fading, and many of us are still re-learning how to breathe without inhaling half the pool. Nevertheless, the Masters are officially back in action. We’ve already clocked up almost 100k metres between us since returning, proving we certainly haven’t eased ourselves back in gently. It’s a stellar start to the new season, with plenty more distance (and questionable coachdesigned sets) to come. To kick off the new season in style, we hosted a welcome-back dinner for our swimming family, a wonderful evening catching up out of the water and celebrating being back together.
Gili is Calling One of the highlights of the Masters calendar is back! From 20–23 November, we’re heading to the Gili Islands for a weekend of open-water swimming, sunshine, and well-earned post-swim refreshments. Around 15 swimmers have already signed up for what promises to be a fantastic trip featuring scenic swims around each island, crystal-clear waters, and sea turtles joining us along the way. The “Road to Gili” Strava challenge is officially underway, sparking friendly competition to see who can log the most mileage before we depart. In previous years, our group racked up almost 2,000 km across 670 hours of swimming; let’s see if we can break our record this year! Calling All Triathletes We have plenty of triathletes in the Masters squad. If the swim leg is the part of your race you’d secretly prefer to gloss over, we are here to help. Lane 3 is calling. Whether you want to refine your technique, build endurance, gain confidence in open water, or simply complete the swim with enough energy to enjoy the bike, come jump in with us. A few tweaks to your stroke can make a world of difference, and swimming with a squad is vastly more enjoyable than staring at the black line on your own. Swimmer of the Month: Ian Hawkins This month’s highly prestigious Masters honour goes to Ian Hawkins, who is rapidly approaching a pretty incredible milestone: 200 swim sessions. Reaching this milestone is impressive enough on its own, but even more so given that he’s been working his way back from shoulder surgery. And when we say committed, we mean committed. Ian has been doing his physio in the pool throughout his recovery, including sessions involving 2km of pretty much nothing but kicking. While the rest of us might have conveniently decided we needed to “rest”, Ian just kept turning up and getting it done. Ian, we salute you. Although after 2km of kick, we’re not entirely sure your legs will salute back. Set We’d Rather Forget A new addition to the Masters update, where each month we commemorate the set that made us question our life choices. This month’s winner: The set where the coach reassured us, “It’s not that bad.” Until you realise it’s actually 1000m of IM! Come Swim With Us You certainly don’t need to be an Olympian to join the Masters. You just need to feel comfortable in the water, be willing to follow the feet in front, and bring a healthy sense of humour for whatever set the coach has dreamed up that morning. Whether you’re racing, training for Gili, getting back into swimming or simply looking for a great group to train with, new swimmers are always welcome. PADEL
Exciting Developments in the Padel Section By Kevin Wotherspoon, Member of the Club since January 2023
Wondering whether to give padel a try? A few exciting developments at the British Club might just convince you it’s time… Social padel has changed venues. We now hold Tuesday night socials at SRC@Ayer Rajah, and this is a clear upgrade. The courts have a smoother surface, high-overhead clearance and lighting that doesn’t mimic full-beam headlights. The result: longer rallies and a better game experience. It’s convenient to get to from the city, and an on-site beverage facility means players can have a bit of post-match social and still be home by a sensible hour. Social padel remains just that: mixed abilities, rotating partners, no pressure and no prior experience required. If you have never played padel before, this is the right place to start. If Tuesday night doesn’t work, from September, Saturday morning sessions will be available at the same venue. For more experienced players we also have a Thursday night session, where Intermediates and above can compete in a Mexicano format. Players are ranked after a game, which means much fewer lopsided matches. Even at higher levels, players can get a very competitive game. The big news: the British Club has approved, in concept, the construction of two padel courts on site. This is a huge and genuine commitment from the club and reflects a clear understanding of the rising importance of Padel in social sports. These will dramatically expand what the padel section can offer — coaching, junior sessions, ladder competitions. They will also help to attract new membership to the club and most likely create new revenue streams, which will be to the benefit of all British Club members. It’s a super exciting time to be a member of the Padel section. And at just SGD 24 for a two-hour session, British Club padel remains some of the best value padel offerings in Singapore. Squash and Tennis will surely remain the “King and Queen” of racket sports, yet there are new games emerging which are gaining popularity. We have already embraced Padel and Pickleball to be fully fledged sports sections at the Club. Now Squash 57 joins the line-up. Squash 57 is not strictly a new sport; this was formerly known in the UK as Racketball but is totally new to Singapore. It is similar to Squash in that it is played on the same court, but it uses a racket with a shorter shaft and a larger face, hitting a ball which is about 1.5 times bigger than that tiny squash ball. With a diameter of 57 mm -that’s where the game gets its name -- it is really bouncy, which means it is much easier to play, is heaps of fun, and you get to play from day one! This is an opportunity for everyone in the family, from juniors or adults with little previous rackets experience, to senior racket players increasingly struggling with injuries or the sheer rigour of Tennis or Squash. Like Pickleball, it is easy to pick-up though hard to master yet has much of the excitement of Padel and Squash. Indeed, Squash 57 in the UK is often seen as a pathway to cross-over to squash or other racket sports. So why not give it a go? Just book a squash court, ask the Sports team to lend you the rackets (and goggles for juniors) and of course, ensure you have non-marking indoor court shoes. Oh … and be prepared to have a good laugh!

Over the last two months the Bulldogs competed proudly in our second Inter-Club Pickleball League (ICPL) campaign. Held annually and regarded as one of Singapore’s premier pickleball competitions, the league brings together some of the strongest club teams from across the island. As one of the league’s founding members, the British Club had the honour of hosting Match Day 3, welcoming five guest clubs and more than 100 players and supporters. Courts 3 and 4 were buzzing throughout the evening, with spectators lining the overlooking gallery and hanging on every dink, drive and reset. Across the five match days, our ladies — Tamryn Brown, Carissa Chua, Aneetha Vine, Konal Sharma and May Kwok — put in a strong showing, winning 6 of their 10 games. On the men’s side, the partnership of Duncan Micallef and Ashim Gupta produced an impressive run, winning 5 of the 6 games they played together. 50 OCT 2026

While the Bulldogs may not have taken home the top prize this year, the team competed with plenty of heart, determination and spirit, showing clear improvement from last season and proving that we continue to close the gap on some of Singapore’s strongest club teams. A huge thank you to every member who played, and represented the British Club throughout the competition, as well as everyone who helped make our home match day such a success. Finally an equally huge thank you to our supporters who were there with us every step of the way. Your encouragement and cheers from the sidelines meant a great deal to the team and made every match day that much more special. We’ll be back stronger next year. OCT 2026 51
