Roger Harrold, President’s MESSAGE
Dear Members,
I hope everyone has been enjoying a pleasant start to the year and finding time to make the most of the Club with your loved ones. It has been wonderful to see our spaces filled with members of all ages coming together to relax, dine, and spend quality time with one another.
March is a lovely month for family celebrations at the Club. On 15th March, we will be hosting our Mothering Sunday celebration at Verandah Café, a meaningful occasion to show appreciation to the mothers and mother figures who play such an important role in our lives. Shortly after, on 17th March, we will come together at the Windsor Arms to mark St. Patrick’s Day, which always brings a cheerful atmosphere and a chance for members to gather and enjoy the festivities.
Following the success of our Red Pool Party in January, we are also looking forward to our special Blue Pool Party on 28th March, which will feature a bluethemed afternoon with food, drinks and games for families and friends to enjoy together by the pool.
Moments like these are what make Club life so enjoyable, with simple opportunities to spend time with one another. I encourage you to join these events if you can and be part of the fun.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the Club. I wish you and your families a pleasant month ahead and look forward to seeing you around the Club.

A Gentle Reminder: Preserving Our Club Community
Dear Members,
One of the most cherished aspects of our Club is the shared sense of community and the high standard of mutual respect we all enjoy. To ensure that the Club remains a welcoming and harmonious environment for everyone, we would like to take a moment to highlight the importance of our Published Rules and Bye-Laws.
While these governing documents seldom change and, indeed, there have been no recent updates, they serve as the essential foundation for our daily operations and member interactions. Adhering to these guidelines ensures that every visit is enjoyable for you and your fellow members alike.
Staying Informed
We understand that with busy lives, it can be easy to overlook the finer points of Club protocol. To make it as simple as possible for you to stay informed, we have provided a QR code below which will take you directly to the most current versions of both the Rules and the Bye-Laws on our website.
Scan to view the Club Rules and Bye-Laws.
We kindly ask all members to take a few moments to re-familiarise themselves with these documents. Your cooperation and continued commitment to the standards of our Club are what make this such a special place to belong. If you have any questions or require clarification, please speak to our Membership Services.
Thank you for your ongoing support and for being such a vital part of our community.
Warm regards, The Club Management

Strengthening Our Community Impact: The Club’s Charity Policy
The British Club remains committed to making a meaningful difference in the wider community. Following a review by the Charity Advisory Group in August 2025, the Club has adopted a more focused partnership approach for FY2025–2026. Three Singapore-based charities have been officially appointed for a two-year support period: Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), Singapore Children’s Society, and Equal.
These charities were selected for their strong governance, proven impact and the diverse communities they serve. RDA is the only charity in Singapore providing equine-assisted therapeutic sessions for individuals with disabilities. Singapore Children’s Society protects and nurtures vulnerable children and youth through multiple programmes islandwide. Equal delivers animal-assisted services that enhance social and emotional wellbeing among vulnerable groups. Together, they represent a balanced and meaningful spread of community support aligned with the Club’s values.
Under the policy, the Club supports up to two to three official charity partners over a two-year period, with funding capped at SGD 20,000 per charity per annum. Cheque presentations typically take place in the second or third quarter of the financial year. The Management Committee may also support standalone causes on an ad hoc basis.
Members and Sections remain warmly encouraged to champion causes close to their hearts. Fundraising for the three official partners may be conducted in the Club’s name, while support for other charities should be done in the member’s or section’s personal capacity.
We thank all members for your continued generosity and community spirit. Together, we can ensure our collective efforts create lasting and meaningful impact both within and beyond the Club.
Red Pool Party
Saturday, 31st January
Our members turned the poolside red hot as they showed up in every shade of red for a day of swimming, games, and easy-going fun. With refreshing drinks from Asahi Beer and Moët & Chandon Red, paired with delicious bites, it was the poolside celebration!

Chinese New Year Celebration
Wednesday, 18th February
From the lively lion dance and vibrant cultural performances to the Yu Sheng and ang baos shared by our Main Committee, the celebration was a joyful afternoon filled with festive cheer. We wish everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous year ahead!
MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT - MARY SOLTYSIAK
Blending family life, creativity and entrepreneurship, Mary takes us inside the life of a familiar face at the Club. From her journey across continents to building her own event styling brand, she shares what inspired her to join the Club, her favourite spots, and how she balances work, family, and creativity.
Could you introduce yourself and share what first inspired you to join the Club?
We’re a blended, multicultural family of four living in Singapore. My husband, Soeren, is German and has been based here for over 20 years. We met while I was living in Australia — both working in the reinsurance industry — and I later moved to Singapore to start our life together. We’re now both proud Singapore Permanent Residents.
We have a daughter, Elina, and Soeren’s son, Jon, who lives with us as well. Our home is full of energy (and animals!) — from bunnies and kittens to chickens, pheasants and a flock of birds. Life is busy but wonderfully full.
I’m originally from the Philippines, later became an Australian citizen, and eventually transitioned from the corporate world into the creative space, founding Estilo & Co, an event styling studio.
We joined The British Club because it felt like a perfect fit for our family. The kids love swimming and sports, while I can work, take meetings or enjoy a change of environment. It strikes a great balance between being relaxed, family-friendly and practical for everyday life.
Before officially joining, I already had a connection to the Club through my business, having styled several events here. I was familiar with the team, venues and atmosphere, and every experience was seamless and welcoming, which made joining an easy decision.
Do you have a favourite sport or activity you enjoy at the Club?
Golf is definitely my favourite sport, and my husband and I also play tennis and recently tried padel. I haven’t played at the Club yet, but it’s high on my list and I’m looking forward to getting more involved soon.
What’s your go-to dining spot at the Club, and your must-order dish?
The Verandah Café is my go-to — casual, convenient and perfect for a quick meal. So far, I’ve tried the nasi goreng and sweet & sour pork, both of which didn’t disappoint, and I’m looking forward to exploring more of the menu.
Could you share a little about your journey behind Estilo & Co and what inspired you to start the brand?
Estilo & Co began during a major turning point in my life. After a very difficult experience in my last corporate role, I wanted to rebuild my confidence and find fulfilment through work that was truly my own.
I started small by creating my own styling pieces, and that creative process became both healing and empowering. As the brand grew, I began curating styling packages for intimate celebrations, with a focus on reusability, longevity and thoughtful design.
Today, Estilo & Co is a full event styling studio, and I bring the same passion and purpose to every project — whether it’s an intimate gathering or a large-scale celebration.
How do you like to spend your weekends when you’re not working?
Honestly, if I’m not working, I’d love a nap! With an events business, weekends are usually my busiest time, so Mondays have become my unofficial rest day.
Whenever we do get family time — especially when my husband isn’t travelling — we enjoy simple moments like dining out, cosy movie nights or family board games. They’re small but always meaningful.
THE FUTURE OF INHERITANCE TAX
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except for death and taxes.” -
Benjamin Franklin
I have heard this saying used extensively over the years - a tax colleague of mine many years ago was certain to include this within his presentations to the general amusement of attendees. With this in mind, I have focused on tax in my article this month.
Since Wednesday the 6th of November, when the Chancellor stood up in the House of Commons at 12:30pm UK time, we witnessed the forthcoming tax changes being announced.
For months leading up to the Budget there had been plenty of rumours circulating about potential changes. According to an Ipsos poll prior to the Budget, 3 in 5 people in the UK stated ‘they felt anxious about how the Budget will affect their finances’.*
In the aftermath of all this speculation, we should be clear on what has actually changed. Rather than examine the extensive spectrum of UK taxes, I will focus on one tax. In my view from years of planning this is the most loathed UK tax amongst clients, namely Inheritance Tax (IHT).
Nil Rate Band
Firstly, the nil rate band will remain fixed at GBP325K up to April 2031. This is the value of your estate which can be passed on without incurring an Inheritance Tax charge. This applies on a global basis for individuals considered to be UK domiciled and on UK situs assets for those who are not domiciled in the UK.
Let’s examine this impact.
The Office for National Statistics estimates net property wealth made up the largest proportion of wealth in the UK at 40% with residential property
representing around GBP8.2 trillion of value (gross rather than net value). This asset class is closely followed by private pensions at 35%.**
In July 2025, Zoopla indicated UK homes had risen in value by GBP56K over the previous 5 years which equated to a gain of circa 20%.***
With the average value of property reaching GBP269,862 by October of last year, there isn’t much headroom before the GBP325K nil rate band is reached - although this doesn’t factor in mortgage exposure.**** A further 20% increase in property values between now and 2031 would result in UK property values on average almost matching the nil rate band at circa GBP324K, although as mentioned this is total rather than net values.
The UK Government forecasts that 90% of estates will still have no IHT liability in each of the next 5 years leading up to 2031, however this requires some examination as it doesn’t indicate the increase in estates exposed to IHT.*****
In 2022 to 2023 UK IHT liabilities were GBP6.7 billion with the number of estates paying IHT amounting to 4.62% (31,500 estates) and Casfin believe the number of estates paying IHT by 2031 will more than double to 63,100.******
There was in my view another material announcement.
Pension funds
From April 2027, most unused UK pension funds will be included within an individual’s estate. My earlier quoted statistic indicated around 35% of wealth in the UK sits within pension funds, so adding this to the 40% estimated to be held in net property will result in an expansion of scope for Inheritance Tax reach from April 2027.
Previously, UK pensions had unquestionably been used as Inheritance Tax shelters with the government website stating, ‘pension schemes have been increasingly used and marketed as a tax planning tool to transfer wealth without an Inheritance Tax charge, rather than for funding retirement’.
There were other changes with Business and Agricultural Relief being reduced to GBP1M before being raised to GBP2.5M on the 23rd of December.*******
The question the last two UK Budgets present is how to plan for Inheritance Tax factoring in the main changes. Each person’s situation can and will likely be different and unique but there are avenues which can still be explored.
Amongst the many options to consider are:
A Wills – it is crucial to ensure your Will represents your intentions and current tax legislation.
A Gifting – you can still gift up to GBP3K per annum with an immediate exemption from IHT with additional capital gifts exempt from consideration once you exceed the 7-year period for taper relief. This would need careful planning to ensure you still take care of your future income needs.
A Small gift exemptions – gifting GBP250 to a number of individuals each year
A Using life insurance to cover the IHT cost – this doesn’t remove the tax but provides a funding mechanism with a clear premium being paid to ensure the tax bill can be paid in whole or part.
A Review the approach you take to your UK pensions if these were a key part of your IHT strategy as this will be affected from April 2027.
A Consider rebalancing the weighting of assets
between you and your spouse to use allowances and exemptions where this is appropriate
A If you decide to gift at least 10% of your estate to charity your IHT rate will reduce from 40% to 36%.
A Prior to all of this ensure you have clarity on your Long-Term Resident position.********
Inheritance Tax is a complex area and it is important to have a clear and detailed discussion about your financial affairs with a qualified adviser. If you would like to speak to a member of our team, please do get in touch.

World Water Day Starts in Your Closet
By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025
Water isn’t just in our taps — it’s in our wardrobes too.
Water is a human right, yet 2.1 billion people still lack access to safely managed drinking water. At the same time, water is increasingly treated as a commodity: nearly free from a public tap, but costly when bottled, trucked in during droughts, or restricted by infrastructure and access. In conflict zones such as Gaza, Ukraine and Syria, water becomes even more critical — with control over supply shaping daily survival.
As World Water Day (22 March) approaches, it’s worth reflecting on a less visible source of water use: our clothes.
Beyond farms and factories, water is deeply embedded in our wardrobes:
• A single cotton T-shirt can take around 2,700 litres of water to produce.
• The fashion industry uses an estimated 93 billion cubic metres of water annually, about 4% of global freshwater withdrawals.
• Textile dyeing and finishing contribute significantly to industrial water pollution.
• Even after purchase, washing synthetic clothing releases microfibres that can enter rivers and oceans.
The good news? Part of this footprint lies in our hands. Reusing, repairing and responsibly donating textiles reduces demand for new production, cutting down water use and pollution upstream.
This March, The British Club Singapore is turning awareness into action with our British Club Textile Drive (2nd – 22nd March).
Members can drop clean textiles into the trolley outside Hangout at any time during the drive. Items not accepted by Cloop will still be directed to responsible alternative channels.
All donations go to Cloop, a local circular fashion social enterprise focused on keeping textiles in use, reducing waste and supporting community-based solutions. Cloop also supports initiatives linked to water and sustainability, helping connect everyday choices to broader impact.
Since 2022, members have donated almost 2.5 tonnes of textiles — representing an estimated 5.75 million litres of water used in production. Last year alone saw 688 kg donated, and this year, we hope to do even more.
For members, a small bag of textiles can be a meaningful water action.

Development Updates
Developments That Matter: Powering The Club , Responsibly
As part of our ongoing sustainability efforts, the Club has taken a further step towards reducing its environmental footprint. From October to December 2025, we matched 501.88 MWh of our electricity consumption with renewable energy through internationally recognised Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs)
This means the electricity used during this period was supported by power generated from renewable sources, helping to reduce the Club’s carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner energy future. The certificates are independently verified and aligned with global sustainability standards.
This initiative reflects the Club’s continued commitment to responsible energy use and environmental stewardship, as we work towards more sustainable operations for our members and the wider community.
A New Chapter with AREU
In January, the Club marked an important milestone with the signing of a new Collective Agreement with the Attractions, Resorts & Entertainment Union (AREU).
This new Agreement helps provide clarity and stability for our team while supporting the Club’s long-term future, and we look forward to continuing this close collaboration in creating a positive and supportive workplace for everyone.
Celebrating our Club Stars
We recently came together to celebrate the Faces and Hearts of the Club for January, recognising team members who truly embody the spirit of what we do. Our Face of the Club was Thinagaran Kanakadas, from F&B Verandah Service and F&B Captain, whose professionalism and warm service make every guest feel welcome. Our Heart of the Club was Khiew Tze Seng, from F&B Verandah Kitchen, Chef de Partie, whose dedication behind the scenes helps bring every dining experience to life.
We also took the opportunity to celebrate our staff with January birthdays, making the gathering even more special. Thank you to everyone for your continued hard work, dedication, and commitment to the Club!
A Fond Farewell to Mandy
We recently gathered as a team to celebrate and say goodbye to Mandy, our Marketing and Partnerships Manager of five years, with a farewell party. A familiar face at many Club events, Mandy worked closely with our members and built strong relationships over the years, becoming a valued part of the community. We are grateful for her dedication and contributions, and wish her every success in her next chapter. She will be greatly missed!

BEHIND THE PASS WITH CHEF TOMMY
A familiar face at SCORES, Chef Tommy has been serving up comforting favourites and creative monthly specials for many years. His passion for cooking, shaped from a young age and refined by his experience at the Club, continues to shine through in every dish he prepares for our members.
You’ve been part of the SCORES team for many years – how did your journey here begin, and what has kept you inspired over time?
My journey as a chef began in childhood, spending my days in my uncle’s coffee shop. Being in the kitchen, helping with small tasks and observing the rhythm of daily cooking sparked my curiosity and passion for food, forming the foundation of who I am today. Working at The British Club has allowed me to grow, refine my craft, and pursue excellence alongside a dedicated and inspiring team.
SCORES has been featuring Japanese and Asian-inspired dishes for our monthly specials. Is there a particular dish that you’re especially proud of, and why?
I’m proud of every monthly special we introduce at SCORES, especially our Japanese and Asian-inspired dishes. Each dish is carefully developed with attention to flavour, balance and quality, which gives me full confidence when recommending them to our members. Knowing that I can stand behind every dish we serve and see members enjoy them during lunch at Scores Bar is what makes me most proud.
If you could recommend one must-try dish to members visiting SCORES for the first time, what would it be?
For members visiting SCORES for the first time, I would recommend trying our February Valentine’s specials. Dishes like the Be My Burger, with its heartshaped brioche bun and rich wagyu beef patty, or the Scarlet Ember Tomato Soup served with heart-shaped croutons, are great examples of how we combine flavour, creativity, and a touch of fun. These specials are thoughtfully crafted and give first-time diners a memorable introduction to what SCORES has to offer.
When you’re not cooking at work, what kind of food do you enjoy making for yourself or your family at home?
At home, I occasionally spend time experimenting with new recipes, cooking them for my family and myself to try. It’s something I enjoy, as it allows me to test new ideas and improve my skills outside of work.
If you weren’t a chef, what do you think you would be doing today?
If I weren’t a chef, I would likely still find myself learning from other experienced chefs to develop my cooking techniques. I would love to pick up new skills and, one day, possibly open my own restaurant.

WINE APPRECIATION SECTION
An Australian Journey in the Glass
By Romik Arconian, Member since August, 2024
Members of the Wine Appreciation Section gathered for our third bi-monthly tasting, turning the spotlight on Australia — a country whose wines span cool-climate finesse to bold, sun-filled intensity. In true Club spirit, members brought along bottles to share, creating a diverse and engaging lineup of familiar favourites and new discoveries.
The evening began in Margaret River with the elegant Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay 2023, showing fine texture, bright citrus and subtle oak. This was followed by the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling 2023, offering a fresher, aromatic contrast and highlighting the region’s versatility beyond its renowned Chardonnay and Cabernet.
The reds opened with Sevenhill Quarry Road Cabernet–Malbec 2019 from Clare Valley, before moving into a Cabernet comparison between Penfolds Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 and Pedestal Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2022. Tasted side by side, the wines revealed two distinct styles: Penfolds’ smooth, generous approach and Pedestal’s more restrained, classically structured expression.
A highlight of the night was Penfolds Bin 389 2021, the celebrated Cabernet-Shiraz blend often called “Baby Grange,” delivering power and refinement in equal measure. This was followed by Two Hands ‘Sophie’s Garden’ Shiraz 2012 from Padthaway, whose decade of bottle age revealed softer tannins and savoury, mature complexity.
The tasting also featured a rare mature magnum, Yering Station ‘Yering’ Cabernet Merlot 1997 from the Yarra Valley. At over 25 years old, it displayed graceful notes of cedar, leather and dried fruit, showcasing the elegance and longevity of cool-climate Australian reds.
We concluded on a sweet note with De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2002, a rich dessert wine with honeyed depth and apricot-caramel flavours.
The wines were paired with a specially curated menu, starting with Mountbatten smoked salmon or baked eggplant parmigiana, followed by Angus beef with truffle mash or creamy truffle mushroom penne — combinations that complemented both the whites and the fuller-bodied reds beautifully.
Altogether, the evening highlighted Australia’s impressive diversity, from Margaret River finesse to Clare Valley structure, Yarra Valley elegance and South Australia’s iconic power. We now look forward to our next Wine Appreciation evening on 19 March, when the focus will turn to Pinot Noir for another exciting exploration.

Cricket at the British Club: An Exciting Season Ahead
By Mal Jones, Member since March, 2021
The British Club Cricket Section is gearing up for an exciting, inclusive and action-packed season ahead. With a full calendar of fixtures, growing participation and opportunities both on and off the pitch, cricket at the Club continues to go from strength to strength.
The season begins in March, with nets starting in February, giving players of all abilities a chance to sharpen skills, build fitness and reconnect, while enjoying the friendly, welcoming culture of British Club cricket.
Alongside local competitions, players can look forward to overseas fixtures, including matches in Malaysia and the potential for further international tours, offering both high-quality cricket and memorable shared experiences.
Cricket at the Club goes beyond match days, with a family day also planned this season, featuring kids’ activities, a BBQ, music and plenty of time to socialise, bringing members and families together in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
Member Spotlight: Chris Pardey
This season, we shine the spotlight on one of our most passionate ambassadors, Chris Pardey, who proudly represented the Club at major cricket tournaments around the world last year. Here are his thoughts:
Q: How long have you been a Section member?
A: I joined the Cricket Section in 2006.
Q: What has kept you with the Section for so long?
A: I’ve loved cricket for over 50 years, especially the banter and camaraderie. The BCCC is a truly international team with a fantastic atmosphere.
Q: What do you enjoy most about BCCC?
A: The diversity – playing with people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. In 2025, I even played alongside players born more than a century after the coach who taught me in the 1970s.
Q: You travelled widely to watch cricket last year. Any highlights?
A: I watched matches in Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, India and England. Perth was unforgettable with 51,000 fans for the Ashes, and Navi Mumbai was special for India’s women’s World Cup win.
Q: What would you say to members thinking of joining BCCC?
A: I’d highly recommend it – it’s a great way to make friends and enjoy competitive but social cricket.
With an exciting calendar, overseas opportunities and a strong sense of community, the season ahead promises to be a great one. We look forward to seeing everyone at nets and around the boundary soon.

Duel in the Pool: A Winning Meet for the Barracudas
By Lisa Koh, Member of the Club since
October,
2020 & Danya Fox Pemberton, Member of the Club since February, 2017
The Barracudas’ duel meet with the Tanglin Club, aptly titled Duel in the Pool, was a resounding success. The event provided a fantastic opportunity for many of our swimmers to showcase the results of their hard work, determination, and strong team spirit. We extend our sincere thanks to the team at Total Swimming for delivering such a professionally run and memorable meet.
The Barracudas are also delighted to announce our 2026 Swim Team Captains. Gabrielle and Caoimhe, both long-standing and highly committed members of the squad, will lead our 97 Barracudas throughout the year. Congratulations to both — we look forward to an exciting and successful season under their leadership.
The British Club Golf Section: December and January Events Recap
By Adam Bozeman, Member of the Club since January, 2023
The golf section stayed busy over the holiday season with a series of social matches and our inaugural holiday party at Scores. In addition, we have established a partnership with GolfTec, which will provide opportunities for our members to access top-notch golf coaching both at GolfTec’s facilities and during our monthly social games. Read on to hear more.
In December, the section hosted a lively and well-attended social event at Scores. With delicious food and drinks from the Scores kitchen, and a diverse group of families, long-time section members and new section members, everyone had a great afternoon under the umbrellas despite the pouring rain. One of the highlights was the golf trivia game, where section members teamed up to test their knowledge of golf history and facts, with the winners taking home some British Club golf gear.
We kicked off 2026 with strong turnouts at all three-monthly social games. Our monthly weekend game was held at Starhill Golf & Country Club in Johor Bahru. The group enjoyed a great day at this beautiful course, with some fine golf played for the top three spots: 1st place – Jackie Barkham, 2nd place – John Gaw, and 3rd place – Phil Duckworth.
The following week, we played nine holes at Mandai Golf Course and were joined by one of the coaches from GolfTec. This was a great opportunity for section members to receive on-course instruction from a PGA professional. Everyone enjoyed the nice weather and casual golfing atmosphere at Mandai, and we all picked up a few helpful tips from the pro to continue improving our skills.
Lastly, we wrapped up January with our monthly medal game at Keppel Golf Club in Singapore. With 16 players, it was a great morning out on this challenging course. The leaderboard was competitive and constantly changing throughout the morning, and it came down to the final few holes to determine our winners for the day: 1st place – Chris Deakin, 2nd place – Phil Duckworth, and 3rd place – Kevin Wotherspoon.
We have a busy few months ahead, with our Q1 social event at the Verandah Café in February, monthly social games as usual, an indoor golf and coaching evening at GolfTec in late February, our annual golf section tour in March (this year to Thailand), and a section-sponsored round at Sentosa Golf Club in March.
If you are interested in joining the golf section, we welcome players of all ages and abilities. We hope to see you on the links soon!
Smashing Success: BC Padel on the Rise
By Kevin Wotherspoon, Member of the Club since January, 2023
The BC Padel Section conducted its AGM this month, just the third since the section’s inception back in 2022. Attendance was high and the discussion vibrant, bolstered by some essential post-game “lubrication”. Convenor Jamie Salamon highlighted the section’s achievements, most notably the continued rapid growth in membership, up 35% to 78 this year. Padel now ranks third in total members at the Club.
This is a remarkable feat for a section without on-site facilities. Padel is thriving globally, hitting the sweet spot with a low barrier to entry thanks to simple serves and the principle that “return beats power”, while strongly appealing to tennis and squash players who enjoy more tactical play. It is also a highly social sport. As a doubles game on a smaller court, there is plenty of interaction and banter between players.
Treasurer Andrew Vine (British Club Life Member) outlined plans for the upcoming season, including more inter- and intra-club tournaments, additional section social evenings to draw down the F&B allocation, and an extra game night to meet increasing demand for court time, held at a location more conducive to socialising at the BC.
The main talking point of the evening, however, was the exciting initiative to build Padel courts at the BC. The sport’s strong potential to drive both membership and F&B revenue has been recognised by the Club’s key decisionmakers, and one only needs to look at the Hollandse Club to see how the adoption of Padel can significantly impact a club’s community and finances.
So, if you have been thinking of joining the Padel Section but have been hesitating, perhaps due to performance nerves, now is the time to get involved and help drive this initiative. Last month saw the very first novice group coaching session for BC Padel members at Singpadel, with sessions discounted to $70 for a 1.5-hour session, excellent value for members.
And remember, an $8 BC Padel membership also gives you 20% off peak-time court rates at Singpadel. If you already play Padel but are not yet part of the BC Padel Section, signing up will not only lower your overall playing costs but also add to the growing momentum towards having Padel courts built on site soon.
PICKLEBALL
Sunday Dinks at the Club a hit!
By PJ Enriquez, Member of the Club since April, 2023
Pickleball is booming at the Club, with Sunday Social more popular than ever. As one of the fastest-growing sections at the Club, demand for playing time is at an all-time high. The good news is that the section has secured Court 3 (manually lined) for our Sunday “dinks and drives,” giving us a total of four courts to play on.
Our Pickleball Socials are open to all members and all playing levels. Whether you’re in the mood for a fun, relaxed social game or keen to test yourself in more competitive matches, there’s always great play, great company, and plenty of action on court. When the games wrap up, join us at Scores for the “third set.” So come and see why Sunday pickleball is the place to be!

SWIMMING
The Gili Gauntlet: 4 Days, 3 Islands, 32 Kilometers
By David Green, Member of the Club since September, 2010
At 5am on Friday, 7th November, 12 British Club Masters swimmers and 4 dedicated supporters touched down at Changi Airport. Our destination was the turquoise waters and unpredictable currents of the Gili Islands off Lombok.
The mission was simple but demanding— swim up to 8km a day for 4 consecutive days. For seasoned swimmers, it was a return to a familiar challenge; for firsttimers, the payoff for months of hard training.
Day 1: Island Hop
After customs and a scenic transfer to Teluk Nare, the three islands came into view. We headed straight to the north of Gili Trawangan for an ambitious islandhop plan—swim, run across land, then swim again. The narrow Trawangan–Meno crossing proved tougher than expected, with fierce currents pushing back hard. We reached Gili Meno, ran across the quiet island, and pressed on toward Gili Air, aiming for the pink umbrellas of PinkCoco.
As the sun dipped low, nature won the first round and the final Lombok leg was postponed. Still, spirits remained high as we returned to base at Manta Dive Gili Air.
Day 2: Rounding the “Big T”
Saturday was dedicated to a full circumnavigation of Gili Trawangan, the most exposed island. Timing was everything. With a neap tide and an early start, we beat the worst of the current and heat. Rounding the southern reef felt like a major win, followed by a calm glide through the harbour. Recovery came via ice baths at Radiant Gym and a well-earned feast at Ruby’s Café.
Day 3: The Turtle Sanctuary
Sunday took us to Gili Meno, the shortest but most magical swim. After our morning zinc ritual, we entered the northern waters and were rewarded with sightings of over ten turtles gliding effortlessly beside us. The day ended with pizza at Mamma Pizza and sunset views of Mount Agung.
Day 4: The Gili Air Express
Monday began early with final checks before our last swim—an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Gili Air, starting right outside our rooms. As the sun rose over Mount Rinjani, the tide carried us smoothly around the island, delivering us back to shore after 32km of swimming across four days.
Join the Squad
The Gili Swim is more than a physical challenge—it’s about camaraderie, recovery and unforgettable sunsets. If you’re looking for your next milestone or simply want to improve your fitness, the British Club Masters swimming squad welcomes new members. Come find us at the pool and dive in.
A Match to Remember: British Army Takes on Our Tennis Section
By Richard Claydon, Member of the Club since March, 2025
The Tennis Section hosted the British Army Tennis Team for a friendly match in early January. Despite inclement weather, section members and Sports Centre staff worked tirelessly to get the courts dry enough for play. The Army team players also pitched in when a late thunder shower further disrupted proceedings. The disciplined way the courts were dried at record speed was truly a sight to behold.
In the match itself, the Army prevailed 4–1, despite stiff resistance from our somewhat older — and perhaps slightly less fit — section players. Following the match, the Army team sent a letter sharing their experience at The British Club:
On behalf of the British Army Tennis Team, I wish to express our sincere gratitude for the exceptional hospitality extended to us during our recent visit as part of the British Army Tennis tour. In particular, the hard work put in by Pradeep behind the scenes to make this happen was hugely appreciated.
Our team has now returned to the United Kingdom following a highly successful tour of Singapore and Australia. The warmth of your welcome, the camaraderie displayed by your members, and the excellent standard of tennis at your Club were among the most memorable highlights of our trip. Your generosity and attention to matching playing levels ensured that our experience at The British Club was truly unforgettable.
We are deeply appreciative of the efforts made by all involved to make the match so enjoyable and meaningful. It is our hope that the friendship between our clubs will continue, and we would be delighted to have the opportunity to reciprocate your hospitality in Aldershot should the occasion arise.
Once again, please accept our heartfelt thanks for your kindness and support.
Beyond this match, the Women’s International Tennis Singapore (WITS) season is also getting underway, with the Club entering five squads of twelve players into the league. Matches and training sessions are held on weekday mornings across all four courts. While teams have been finalised for this season, those interested in playing competitive women’s tennis in the latter half of 2026 are encouraged to visit Scores to watch a match. WITS players will be happy to share how the league works.
The Tennis Section continues to thrive, with a record 238 family memberships as of mid-January, and over 200 children of non-section members currently being trained by an increasingly exceptional coaching team.
