An Update on Club Development Projects By Kenny Cowgill, Vice President, Chair of Strategy, Development Health and Safety Committee

At the recent Club AGM in November, the Main Committee provided an update on the development projects in the Club. Significant time is devoted to assessing and executing development projects to improve member facilities and enhance the overall experience. Various factors are considered, such as member and market preferences, utilisation, cost-benefit analysis, and safety. In addition, collaboration and consultation with different committees and member groups are frequently conducted. During the last financial year, the Club completed a full renovation of SCORES and the Gym, along with an upgraded playground and several smaller projects. In the upcoming months, we will be refurbishing the Elizabeth Suite, Stuart Room, and the staff administration office. The Club’s main building is approaching 40 years old, and the Sports Centre is 25 years old, so there are several shortand long-term projects on the Development Committee’s agenda. For nearly two years, we have been discussing the potential introduction of Padel facilities at the Club. This process has involved exploring various options to preserve existing facilities while creating new opportunities. As is often the case, some options have been deemed unfeasible due to factors beyond our control, leaving us with two remaining possibilities for Padel. The first is to utilise the available sloping land at the Hammerhead, adjacent to the Sports Centre, and the second is to repurpose one tennis court, which would require a small extension of the existing court. Both options will need to be evaluated for engineering viability and accurate cost estimates in the coming months before being presented to all Club committees for consideration. In line with our commitment to due diligence, we will continue to consult our committees regarding project proposals and decisions, while ensuring transparency with our members through effective communication of our development plans. We look forward to sharing more insights into the Club’s development over the coming year.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT - Matthew Hipple Meet Matthew, an American Naval Officer, and Martha, hailing from Mexico—together, they captain their lively crew of four: Mateo, Diego, Lucia, and Isabela. You might spot Matthew at the Club tossing his boys into the pool, while Martha can often be found chasing after a runaway Lucia or enjoying a game on the tennis courts. Read on to discover more about their family adventures and favourite Club moments!

Welcome to The British Club! What brought you here? Researching the big move to our new home, Martha discovered Singapore’s well-developed social and sports club scene. We agreed that joining an active family community might help the family make and entertain new friends while acclimating to a new environment. The British Club was everything we’d hoped for and more — robust facilities with a distinct family-forwardness, from the membership to the schedule and even the physical club design. Which part of the Club have you and your family enjoyed the most so far? The Verandah Café is the eye in our storm of children careening between the pool, playground, Playcentre, and Hangout. Around it, we can let our three footmobile children run free amidst kind staff, fellow families, and our own loose surveillance while comfortably grabbing a meal or going for a swim ourselves. Also, Thursday’s kids’ deal is a gentle relief to our outnumbered wallet.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Do you have a go-to dish at the Club, or one that you are excited to try? I enjoy both SCORES’ simple Bacon Butty and Mushroom Shakshuka — and in answering this, have resolved to add them together into a single culinary atrocity. Martha loves the Verandah Café’s Butter Chicken and fresh naan with an Aperol Spritz. Lucia and Isabela will eat a small mountain of Kids’ Buffet pizza — despite Isabela’s lack of teeth. The boys enjoy chicken satay, whatever the source — but their real favourite is sneaking hot chocolate from Splash when we’re not looking, despite the punishing tropical weather. Which Club event are you most excited to attend in 2026? No dramatic answer, unfortunately. With the chaos of settling subsided, we’re looking forward to joining the flow in this new year: spending more time at the Club and enjoying the activities and events on offer. The boys and I all golf, trying to drag Martha into the dismal sport with us; maybe we’ll join the Golf Section! Share something interesting about yourself! I speak the fifth-most languages in our family. Martha speaks 5, Diego and Matty tie at 3, Lucia 2, me 1.5, and Isabela 0. Martha and the boys learned Dutch to immerse themselves during my 9-month training period in Belgium, where the boys attended a Belgian Catholic public school.

Teaching young people about

financial planning As planners we often call for better financial education at school level. Equipping children with financial literacy skills could make such a significant long-term difference to their lives, so aiming for a basic level of financial education from childhood would surely bring benefits at a societal level. Until financial education finds its way onto the curriculum, I think those of us within the financial services industry have an obligation to think about how we can contribute to improving the level of financial education in children and young people. In this article I’ll share five financial planning lessons that may benefit young people and serve as a useful primer in beginning their financial education. The time value of money One very important lesson that a colleague has instilled in his own children is the time value of money. Instead of looking at that new pair of shoes and asking if they are worth the price tag that’s attached, he instead tries to get them to look at the effort of earning that money. He invites his children to ask themselves: “Are those shoes worth vacuuming the house ten times?”

direct their funds towards saving for a first car or house deposit later down the line. Installing a mentality that you can reward yourself, but that it shouldn’t be at the expense of the big goal down the line. Again, this is a lesson that rings true regardless of age and is an idea that we try to work through with clients and agree on before moving forward. We invite them to think about what, for them, are the important financial goals of today, versus what they want from their future, and show how these goals are connected and can impact on each other. You can’t afford everything Maybe a slightly harder lesson, and potentially one for children fast approaching adulthood, is the importance of learning to accept they simply cannot do everything. Speaking from experience, it’s natural to want the world when you’re younger. However, sometimes you just need to learn to sit and wait until you can afford it or just accept that it’s not going to be possible. Prioritising, planning and focusing on what you can achieve is the best way to not get hung up on the things you might not be able to do. A short lesson on the stock market

The answer to this question will be different for every individual, and it’s about helping the child find out what they value and weighing that against the effort and time it takes to achieve it. This is a question we can all ask ourselves more often, however old we are, when it comes to spending our hard-earned cash.

A basic lesson in how the stock market works and what relevance it has to individuals and their financial plans can be valuable for young people. Most will have some knowledge or will have seen reports of stock market movement on the news but often this can seem unconnected to their own lives.

A balance between today and tomorrow

It can help to explain what the stock market is and what can it do for individuals, using an example to bring it to life, like the alternative it offers to saving your money in the bank (see below). Explaining the potential risks as well as the potential rewards clearly gives a rounded view of what investing in the markets can do and how it can relate to everyday life.

Whilst it may be human nature to seek instant gratification, a sensible approach to life and financial planning involves striking a balance between today and tomorrow. For some of the younger generation that may mean denying themselves a treat today so that they can

Example lesson – cash versus the stock market Cash savings will always have their part in life. They provide financial security and certainty, knowing you have a buffer to fall back on. If you want to buy a car when you turn 18 and you need SGD60K (before COE) then you will likely need to put away the vast majority of that SGD60K to achieve your goal. The stock market, on the other hand, offers something different. As stated on the FCA website[1], savings accounts generally offer specified rates of return, but many investments like shares have rates of return that vary, especially over the short term. Investing on the stock market also comes with greater risk and the potential to experience a fall in value as well as rise, which means you can also lose money. If things go your way you may reach your SGD60K goal whilst only actually saving SGD45K. Conversely you may end up saving more than your goal as your investments have lost money.

in itself, rather, it’s what money will allow them to do that should be the focus. This might mean the financial foundation to buy a house or the freedom to start their own business. Maybe it can fund the education they will need to achieve their career ambitions or even allow them to start making plans to retire early and travel the world. It’s how anyone uses money as a means by which to enrich and improve their lives that’s key. If you would like some help and support with your financial planning, please get in touch.

Understanding the role of money in their life It is undeniable that money and finances will play a part in everyone’s lives, however it’s important in any financial lesson to emphasise that it is a part of a broader picture. The best client outcomes and the best stories that myself and many of my colleagues can recall come from helping clients to achieve things that do not have monetary value. By teaching young people about financial planning and helping to develop a healthy relationship with money, we also have a role in demonstrating that money is not an end

Stirring Up Stories & British Classics with Chef JJ How did your journey as a chef begin, and what led you to join the team at Windsor Arms? My path as a chef began in childhood, spending my days in my father’s coffee shop. Being in the kitchen, helping with small tasks, and watching the rhythm of daily cooking sparked my curiosity and passion for food, forming the foundation of who I am today. In 2017, Chef Sunny and Chef Richard gave me an important opportunity by bringing me into Windsor Arms as a Chef de Partie — a major milestone in my career. Working here has allowed me to grow, refine my craft, and pursue excellence alongside a dedicated and inspiring team. Windsor Arms now showcases British classics every month — which dish are you most proud of? This January, the dish I’m most proud to showcase is our Banana Toffee Pie. It’s a classic British favourite, presented with the care and precision that reflects our kitchen’s standards. The mix of fresh bananas, rich homemade toffee, and light, balanced cream makes it both comforting and indulgent. Though it looks simple, getting the texture and sweetness just right takes careful attention. How would you describe your cooking style, and how do you bring your own touch to Windsor Arms?

Chef JJ is a familiar and well-loved presence at Windsor Arms, known for his warmth, dedication, and craft. Read on as he shares what inspires him, how he brings classic British flavours to life each month, and what guests can look forward to as Windsor Arms continues creating fresh, memorable dining experiences.

I would describe my cooking style as rooted in tradition but refined through technique and precision. I respect classic flavours and the stories behind them, and I always aim to elevate each dish through careful attention to balance, texture, and presentation. At Windsor Arms, I bring my own touch by pairing that respect for heritage with a focus on consistency and craftsmanship. Whether it’s a classic British dish or a seasonal special, I try to add subtle refinements while staying true to the soul of the dish. What inspires you most in the kitchen and keeps your creativity flowing? What inspires me most in the kitchen is the constant pursuit of improvement. Each day offers a chance to refine a flavour or perfect a technique— that drive to get better keeps my creativity alive. I’m also inspired by the people around me; working with a dedicated team creates an environment where ideas grow, and we push one another to maintain high standards. Ultimately, my creativity comes from passion, discipline, and the joy of cooking for people, knowing a well-crafted dish can create a meaningful experience for our guests. Looking ahead, what exciting plans or new experiences can guests expect from Windsor Arms? We’re excited to continue celebrating the richness of British cuisine while exploring new ways to engage our members. Each month, we introduce curated specials that highlight seasonal ingredients and classic flavours with a contemporary touch. Our goal is to make every visit to Windsor Arms feel memorable and personal, so guests can enjoy exceptional food while experiencing the passion that drives our kitchen.

Greening Your Next Celebration By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025

Last year, the British Club was named Best Family Club of the Year — a fitting recognition for a place that hosts countless memorable celebrations. As we plan birthdays, anniversaries, and year-end gatherings, it’s a good moment to consider how our events can bring joy not only to our guests, but also to the planet and our community.

Why It Matters Events create impacts we often overlook: • Events contribute about 10% of global business tourism emissions • A medium event can create 15–25 kg of preventable waste • Up to 40% of décor is thrown out after use

Practical Ways to Reduce Your Footprint Here are 6 simple, impactful ideas that work perfectly with the Club’s facilities and vendors. 1. Choose Reusable Cutlery The Club already provides quality dining ware—use it instead of single-use cutlery. It looks better, cuts waste, and supports Singapore’s shift away from single-use plastics. 2. Choose Planet-Friendly Décor If you’re hosting a themed event, consider renting instead of buying, using reusable décor like LED fairy lights, and choosing eco-friendly favours such as potted plants or wooden puzzles. 3. Donate After Many themed items are still in great condition after a party. You can donate them to local schools or give them to charities. 4. Plan Food Sustainably Work with the Club’s F&B team to right-size portions, avoid over-ordering, choose seasonal menus, and include more plant-based options. 5. Support Inclusive, Local Businesses When choosing vendors, consider small local businesses, women-owned enterprises, social enterprises, or vendors who employ or train minority groups or people with disabilities. 6. Go Digital Skip the paper—send digital invites, use QR codes for menus or programmes, and opt for digital thank-you notes.

26 JAN 2026

A Club Where Joy and Responsibility Meet The British Club has always been defined by its community—families, friends, and members who gather to celebrate, connect, and support one another. Its recognition as Best Family Club of the Year reflects not just great facilities, but a culture that balances joy with responsibility. As we step into the new year, let’s create celebrations that are memorable for guests, gentle on the planet, and kind to the people who make them happen. If you’d like to add a green touch to your next event, reach out to the Sustainability Committee—we’re here to help you design celebrations that are unforgettable for all the right reasons.

CRICKET

It’s Cricket Season Somewhere By Robb Annan, Member of the Club since May, 2018

While the BC XI wrapped up their campaign in Singapore, the real heat was rising 5,000 kilometres to the south as The Ashes roared into life. With no cricket left to play, the only logical move was to chase it. The touring BC squad boarded a flight to Perth, diving headfirst into the noise, colour, and raw passion at Optus Stadium, surrounded by Aussie fans tormenting the travelling Barmy Army. Five uninterrupted days of elite cricket were the dream from this century-old rivalry, but in typical Aussie fashion, it took just two days to deliver more live drama than most social cricketers—or especially the English supporters—could handle. With the job done by the professionals down under, and with Australia surging to a 2–0 series lead as I write this, it was time to shift focus back to Singapore and celebrate an outstanding BC XI season built on both personal and team success. Across 15 matches, the team recorded ten victories and went unbeaten across five matches in Malaysia. The season also delivered silverware, with two Social Cup series wins against our friends at ANZA and the SCC, along with a semi-final appearance at the D&A Sixes earlier in the year. The team also added two silver medals at the annual Swim Gala inter-section relays, narrowly edged out by the Swim Team A squad and finishing ahead of the Tennis Section. 42 JAN 2026

SPORTS & FITNESS

The individual awards for 2025 recognised excellence across the board: • Batter of the Year: Rob Annan (296 runs at 49.3) • Bowler of the Year: Lee Ownsworth (15 wickets at 17.7) • Fielder of the Year: Simon Bignell (7 catches at 0.8 per game) • New Talent of the Year: Chaitanya Anand (206 runs at 41.2, 5 wickets at 16) • Player of the Year: Lee Ownsworth (260 runs at 43.3, plus 7 catches) There were plenty of standout moments. Five half-centuries were recorded, with Nick Verrill leading the way with an unbeaten 71* and 56*, Rob Annan delivering a polished 63*, Chaitanya Anand producing an explosive 53*, and Lee Ownsworth adding a dynamic 52*. With the ball, three four-wicket hauls defined key matches: Simon Bignell’s 4/12 (3.4), Brendan Helme’s 4/17 (8), and Adil Kazi’s 4/36 (6). The season closed with a special moment: the inaugural induction of three legends into the Cricket Section Lifetime Membership. Chris Pardey (involved since 2007 and current tour captain), Simon Bignell (club captain for eight consecutive years and the club’s all-time leading run-scorer), and David Bennett (former long-serving administrator and record wicket-taker) were recognised for their incredible service.

A final thank you to the volunteers, captains, supporters, and players who turn up week after week to build a strong, social cricket community at The British Club— a foundation that promises to thrive for many seasons to come. What an absolutely sensational quarter it’s been for the BC Barracudas! Our swimmers kicked things off with a phenomenal meet at the Hollandse Club, delivering great performances and showcasing true Barracuda spirit. The momentum kept building at the Annual British Club Swimming Gala, an action-packed morning and a true highlight on the Barracuda Calendar. It was inspiring to see so many of our swimmers shining in the pool! We’ll wrap up this incredible year with our AGM, the Barracudas Pool Party, and our Annual Awards Night, where we’ll celebrate standout achievements—including Barracuda of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and the announcement of our new 2026 Team Captains. Chasing Consistency: The Vets’ View of the Bulldogs’ 2025/26 Season By Paul Davies, Member of the Club since June, 1997

The BCFC Bulldogs kicked off the 2025/26 season following a highly successful summer break, marked by a critical and focused recruitment drive aimed squarely at addressing the long-standing challenge of squad depth and consistency in the Cosmo Masters league. The club welcomed new faces Scott, Alan, and Billi, and—crucially—the Vets convinced experienced players James, Kev, and Barnsey to make the switch from the Open Age (OA) side, a move that promised a significant boost in both quality and experience. With these additions, the new season began with great promise, immediately securing three wins from our first four league games. However, the reality check soon arrived as we lost the next four matches, all unfortunately against top-tier teams. Frustratingly, two of these were extremely close games—where we were two up at half-time—that the team truly should have converted into points. The aim remains clear: to consistently challenge for the top three spots in the league by continuing to address our squad depth and consistency issues. A special nod must go to our goalkeeping heroes, Reggie and Tony, for consistently volunteering in goal—a position that seems to perpetually attract the club’s bad luck. Despite the on-pitch wobbles, the off-pitch success continues unabated. Even with the inaccessibility of Scores—our traditional post-match sanctuary—due to our current home pitch being at Khalsa, the social side has been tremendously positive, with the entire squad often staying for a beer (or more) after games. This camaraderie is a massive win for the section and a firm foundation for the competitive football to come.

For those new to the British Club Football Section, we’ve been running a thriving community for nearly 20 years, offering regular 5-, 7-, and 11-a-side football for all ages, from 16 to 67+. If you’re keen to join the fun and enjoy some competitive football, don’t hesitate to reach out at football@british.org.sg or speak to the friendly SRC staff. We look forward to welcoming you! GOLF

The British Club Golf Section: November Recap By Adam Bozeman, Member of the Club since January, 2023

November was a busy month for the golf section as we rounded out the year with our Order of Merit tournament along with a few social games in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The highlight of the month was the annual year-end Order of Merit tournament, held on 30 November at the beautiful Ria Bintan Golf Club in Bintan, Indonesia. Consistently ranked as one of Asia’s top golf courses, Ria Bintan provided a topnotch test of golf played through dense rainforest and along the scenic coastline. With the course in superb condition and lovely weather, it was the perfect venue for our final event of the year. The golf was competitive too, with the top of the leaderboard changing constantly throughout the day. In the end, Phil Duckworth captured the title after hitting a phenomenal shot from a difficult lie below the 18th green to set up a two-shot margin of victory. In 2nd place, Aidan Mitchell played an outstanding round of golf and, making it a family affair, Chris Mitchell rounded out the top three. Congratulations to Phil, Aidan, and Chris! The day prior, we held a monthly social game at Laguna Bintan, just down the road from Ria Bintan. This made it a full weekend golf excursion for those who joined both days. Between rounds, the group enjoyed unwinding over dinner, drinks, and lodging at the beautiful Four Points by Sheraton. Laguna Bintan is another splendid seaside course on Bintan Island, with spectacular ocean views and a challenging layout. Richard Holloway took first prize on the day with an impressive score of 2-under-par (nett), followed by Mike Hughes in 2nd place and Tim Barkham in 3rd. That was Richard’s second win in November, having claimed victory earlier in the month at our other monthly social game in Malaysia, at Forest City Golf Resort. Congratulations to Richard on his pair of wins! The golf section also held a monthly nine-hole game at Mandai Executive Golf Course in Singapore, which is always a fun and casual way to get out for a quick mid-week round. Finally, our Monday Night League team completed another strong season, finishing in 8th place out of 25 teams at the year-end final. 46 JAN 2026

PICKLEBALL

A Year of Growth, Grit, and Great Company By Manoharan Karthigasu, Member of the Club since October, 2021

On 30th November, our Pickleball Section gathered for its Annual General Meeting, marking a special milestone—our third year as a thriving, energetic community. What began as a small initiative has grown into something truly remarkable, and this year’s reports reflected just how far we’ve come. The Convener’s Yearly Report and Treasurer’s Financial Report painted a picture of exciting momentum and healthy foundations. Our membership has surged to nearly 70 players, we’ve hosted two friendly matches, competed in two competitions, and—yes—celebrated our first official win! Just as importantly, our finances are solid and well managed, setting us up confidently for the future. The AGM also saw the election of our new committee, a passionate group ready to guide the section forward: Co-Conveners: Manoharan Karthigasu and PJ Enrique Secretary: Fiona Treasurer: Andrew Vine Committee Members: Konal and Marina Beyond the courts and committees, we also celebrated community in the best possible way—with our very first Dinkmas Party. Nearly 28 picklers came together for an evening filled with fun games, great food, laughter, and, most importantly, wonderful friendships. It was a true milestone for our section and a reminder that pickleball is as much about connection as it is about competition. 2025 has been an amazing year, packed with firsts, growth, and shared moments we’ll long remember. With such strong foundations and an incredible community, we can’t wait to see what 2026 will bring. One thing’s for sure—the best is yet to come!
