Roger Harrold President
Dear Members,
April is upon us, bringing with it the cheerful spirit of Easter. For those of you staying in Singapore over the holiday break, I invite you to make the Club your home away from home. We have a wonderful agenda of festive activities lined up, from our traditional Easter egg hunt to special celebratory events — there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
Beyond the festivities, I am pleased to share several important updates regarding the Club’s leadership.
Please join me in warmly congratulating Margaret Alvarez, who has been appointed Vice President of the Club. Margaret will take on this vital role in addition to her continued dedication as Chair of the Membership Committee. As many of you know, the Club typically appoints two Vice Presidents to ensure robust governance and operational contingency, and we are fortunate to have her expertise in this capacity.
I would also like to officially introduce and congratulate three members who were elected to the Main Committee at our last AGM. Having hit the ground running since their first meetings in January, please join me in welcoming:
• Wai Hun Yip – Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee
• Robert Annan – Chair of the Sports Committee
• James Pashley – Chair of the Data & MI Committee
The British Club prides itself on maintaining a strong sense of continuity while fostering a diverse spectrum of perspectives to guide us forward. I am immensely grateful to our new committee members, and indeed to all our volunteers, who so generously contribute their time and professional expertise to ensure the Club’s continued success.
I look forward to seeing many of you around the Club in the vibrant weeks ahead.

MEET THE NEW MEMBERS OF THE MAIN COMMITTEE
Yip Wai Hun - Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee
Having lived in Singapore since 1997, my family and I are proud to call it home. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, my husband Grant is from New Zealand, and our children Megan and Andrew were born in Singapore. We have been part of the Club community since 2003, where our children grew up enjoying its many sports and activities. Megan served as Captain of the Barracudas in 2015, while Andrew continues to play football at the Club. Professionally, I am a Chartered Accountant and enjoy cycling and staying active outside of work. As Honorary Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee, I am honoured to support the Club’s financial stewardship. My role focuses on overseeing the annual budget, strengthening financial governance, and safeguarding the Club’s assets. Over the coming year, I aim to enhance financial transparency, work closely with Management to improve operational efficiency, and strengthen financial reserves to support future improvements for members.
Robert Annan - Chair of the Sports Committee
Originally from Australia, my wife and I have been living and working in Asia for over 15 years. We joined the Club in 2018 when our children were still young and quickly became involved in its sports programmes. Both are now part of the competitive Barracudas squad, competing in Neptune League swim meets, and enjoy playing tennis and watching live sport at the Club. On the Main Committee, I serve as Chair of Sports, representing the Club’s vibrant sporting community. The Club currently has 10 sports sections and around 660 members participating in a wide range of on-site and off-site activities. Prior to joining the Main Committee, I served as Convenor of the Cricket Section for five years and have been closely involved with the Sports Committee. My goal for the coming year is to encourage even greater participation across our sports sections, particularly among junior members, ensuring the Club remains an active and welcoming place for members to connect through sport.
James Pashley - Chair of the Data & MI Committee
I have been a member of the Club for the past eight years and value it as a welcoming place to relax, stay active and connect with fellow members. Professionally, I work in the technology and data sector, where much of my career has focused on systems, analysis and management information. On the Main Committee, I serve as Chair of the Data and Management Information (MI) Committee. In this role, I support the Club’s use of systems, data and reporting to ensure the Committee and Management have clear and reliable information for decision-making. During my term, I hope to focus on maintaining secure and reliable systems, improving the quality of management information, and identifying practical ways that technology and reporting can support the Club’s operations and future planning.
Introducing Margaret: Our New Vice President
We are pleased to introduce Margaret as the Club’s new Vice President. With a strong passion for community and a clear vision for the Club’s future, she shares more about her journey, priorities, and what members can look forward to in the months ahead.
1. What motivated you to take on this responsibility, and what does this position mean to you personally?
Our family has greatly enjoyed the British Club over the years. Now that my husband and I are ‘empty nesters’, I have more time to dedicate to other pursuits. I strongly believe in ‘paying forward’ and am involved in several volunteer activities. In my ‘other life’, I lead a membership organisation with a global reach, which has given me insight into both the opportunities and challenges facing such organisations. I am glad to share these experiences in support of our Club, and this played a key role in my decision to take on the Vice President role.
2. Looking ahead, what are some of the key objectives or initiatives you hope to achieve during your term?
The role of the Vice President is to support the initiatives of the President, the General Manager and the Main Committee, while developing a broad understanding of each sub-committee’s work. This will be my focus in the coming months. I also aim to attend as many Club-wide events as my schedule allows so I can remain connected with members and their needs.
3. As Chair of the Membership Committee as well, what are some of your priorities when it comes to strengthening and growing the Club’s membership community?
Our SG60 campaign was a great success, resulting in growth in our membership community. However, we cannot rest on our laurels. Singapore is a dynamic environment, with people constantly coming and going. Our committee aims to support the Club’s efforts to retain a strong membership base while growing it further, by providing meaningful input on member needs. This will help sustain our reputation as a club of choice for families in Singapore.
4. The Club has such a strong sense of community. How do you hope to build on this and enhance the member experience even further?
We have seen an increase in events designed to bring members together, and it has been wonderful to see such strong attendance. We should continue to monitor their success so we can build on what works and adapt to our members’ evolving needs, while being open to letting go of ideas that may no longer align with current interests. I am particularly interested in understanding the British Club member journey—from young families to ‘empty nesters’—and how their needs evolve over time.
5. What excites you most about the future of the Club, and what would you like members to look forward to in the coming years?
I believe the British Club is a dynamic organisation with the ability to adapt when needed. We are supported by strong leadership and dedicated staff, many of whom have served the Club for years, which puts us in good stead despite global economic challenges. Importantly, the leadership team and Main Committee are committed to investing in our facilities to remain relevant and attractive to both current and prospective members. We have recently completed a major renovation of Scores, with further upgrades already planned and under discussion.

Asa Shaari
Dear Members,
March has been a truly memorable month at the Club, and I am delighted to share some highlights with you.
A Wonderful New Members’ Connect Night
We recently hosted an amazing New Members’ Connect Night, and I would like to thank all the new members, sections and committees who attended. Your enthusiasm and Club spirit made the evening a great success.
The night was made even more special as we presented our annual charity donations to two remarkable organisations: Riding for the Disabled and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Both carry out invaluable work, and it was an honour for us, as a Club, to support their efforts.
A special note of appreciation goes to our Craft Section, whose dedication and creativity resulted in a significant donation this year. Your commitment continues to inspire the entire Club community.
Ferrari Club Lunch & Display
Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting the Ferrari Club for a Sunday lunch. The event brought an incredible buzz to the grounds, with 22 stunning models, both new and vintage, on display. It was a real treat for members and guests alike, and we look forward to welcoming them back again soon.
We will be undertaking several important updates to our lobby drop-off area to improve traffic flow and ensure safer, more convenient access for all vehicles.
Works are scheduled from 30th March to 19th April, and we appreciate your patience during this period.
Easter Kids Camp
With the Easter holidays upon us, we are excited to launch our Easter Kids Camp, offering a fun-filled programme for our youngest members. Activities will include sports, arts and crafts, cooking, and more to keep children active, creative and engaged throughout the break. We look forward to seeing the Club filled with their energy and laughter.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club in April and hope you enjoy everything we have planned for the season ahead.

We celebrated International Women’s Day by treating our wonderful women to a box of cupcakes and inviting them to capture the moment at our specially designed IWD photowall with fun props. It was lovely to see so many members joining in the celebration and sharing smiles together. We thank all the incredible women in our community for the strength and positivity they bring to the Club.

Mohammad Kadir Bin Abdullah, Head of Operations
Dear Members,
Joining a members’ club environment has been a truly rewarding experience for me. Coming from a traditional bar and restaurant background, I quickly realised that a club offers something very special — a sense of familiarity, community, and belonging that goes beyond the usual hospitality setting.
What makes the experience particularly meaningful is seeing how the club becomes a place where members gather not only with friends but also with their families. The various family and kids’ activities organised throughout the year bring a wonderful energy to the club. It is always heartwarming to see children enjoying themselves while parents connect, relax, and spend quality time together.
Events like these create memorable moments and strengthen the bonds within the club community. Being part of the team that supports and delivers these experiences has been incredibly fulfilling. It reminds me that the club is not just a venue, but a place where friendships grow and families create lasting memories.
I look forward to continuing this journey and contributing to many more events and activities that make the club such a vibrant and welcoming place for all our members.
A Sunday with the Ferrari Classic Car Club
Sunday, 22nd March
We recently welcomed the Ferrari Classic Car Club for their first breakfast drive of 2026, with 16 stunning cars arriving at the grounds, including vintage models dating back to the 1980s. The impressive lineup quickly caught the attention of members, creating an energetic atmosphere as many stopped to admire the cars. Guests later gathered for lunch at Verandah Café, rounding off an afternoon of community and automotive excellence.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to 2026. I am now three months into my journey with the Club, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to learn something new every day from both our members and my colleagues. It has been a pleasure getting to know the warmth, traditions and strong sense of community that make our Club such a special home away from home.
We have been working on a refreshed membership pack for new member orientations. It has been a rewarding experience collaborating with our valued partners to curate special offerings not only for our new members but for our existing members as well. After all, we are all in this together, and we hope these additions will enhance your overall Club experience and create even more memorable moments for you and your families. Stay tuned for updates on when distribution will begin.
You will find two QR codes below: one to share your experiences when visiting our reciprocal clubs, and another to leave a short note of appreciation for any staff member who has made your visit extra special. Your feedback and kind words mean a great deal to us and truly help shape the warm, welcoming environment we strive to provide every day.
Personally, one of the things I have enjoyed most is seeing members connect across generations, whether at family events, on the sports fields or simply over a meal with friends. These everyday interactions are what bring the spirit of the Club to life, and I feel very fortunate to be part of it.
I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months.

Development Updates
Elizabeth Suite & Stuart Room Refresh: British Charm Meets Modern Sophistication
We are pleased to share that the Club will be undertaking a refurbishment of the Elizabeth Suites and Stuart Room as part of our continued commitment to enhancing member facilities and maintaining the high standards expected of our spaces.
Renovation Period
Works are scheduled to take place from 16th April to 11th May
Design Concept
The refreshed concept blends classic British character with modern functionality, creating a space that feels both timeless and contemporary. A warm palette of earth tones paired with navy carpeting, painted wall panels and white fabric wall coverings will introduce a refined yet welcoming atmosphere, suitable for meetings, workshops, private celebrations and formal gatherings.
Inspired by Singapore’s iconic black-and-white colonial homes, the addition of plantation shutters will bring tropical elegance and soft natural light into the rooms. These adjustable shutters allow flexibility in controlling privacy and views of the surrounding greenery, while reinforcing the Club’s sense of heritage and place.
To enhance versatility, selected windows will be sealed to accommodate LED screens and stage backdrops, improving the rooms’ suitability for presentations, events and performances. Built-in coffee stations will also be reconfigured to discreetly house AV equipment, speakers, server racks, craft materials and crockery, ensuring seamless integration of technology and hospitality functions.
Overall, the refurbishment will deliver a cohesive, flexible and sophisticated environment that celebrates the Club’s legacy while upgrading these spaces for modern, multifunctional use.
Minimising Disruption
We are working closely with our Banquet and Events teams to carefully manage existing bookings during this period. Where necessary, alternative arrangements will be communicated directly to affected members. Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience throughout the renovation works.
We appreciate your understanding and patience during this enhancement period and look forward to unveiling the refreshed venues in May.
I am a dreamer with big goals for the future. I care about being part of a team. I believe in being an upstander for those around me.
"Playing sport at Dulwich College (Singapore) has taught me so much about being part of a team. Our coaches remind us that it’s not about one person, but everyone working together. I’ve learned that success comes from supporting your team-mates, and that true leadership isn’t about being the best player — it’s about helping others do their best. I’m grateful for these lessons in teamwork and unity, and I’ll carry them with me wherever I go.”
Prosperity & Togetherness: CNY Staff Townhall
Our Chinese New Year Staff Townhall brought the team together for a vibrant celebration. The Elizabeth Suite was dressed in auspicious décor and filled with a delicious Chinese New Year–themed buffet spread. Staff gathered to take part in the Yu Sheng toss, while a special lucky draw added to the excitement. Adding to the festivities was a Chinese calligraphy station, where many enjoyed trying their hand at this traditional art. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to welcome the new year as one Club team!
Celebrating our Club Stars
In February, we proudly recognised two outstanding team members for their contributions to the Club. Rengasamy A/L Munusamy was named Face of The Club for his warm service, while Chef David Hoo Hon Lin from Verandah Café was honoured as Heart of The Club for his passion in the kitchen. We also took the opportunity to celebrate our February birthday staff with a special cake, as we recognised the people who make our Club so special.

A Fond Farewell to Vincent, Our Club Ambassador
After an incredible 41 years with The British Club, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Vincent, our beloved Club Ambassador, as he begins a well-deserved retirement.
Vincent joined the Club on 4 July 1988 as Captain for Verandah Service, beginning a remarkable journey defined by dedication, warmth, and genuine hospitality.
Over the years, Vincent steadily grew through many roles within the Club. He was promoted to Supervisor in 1990, became a Butler shortly after, and later advanced to Butler Supervisor in 1991. In 1993, he took on the role of Jackpot Supervisor.
In 2011, Vincent was appointed Concierge and Club Ambassador, a role perfectly suited to his warm personality. For many members, Vincent has been the first friendly face they see upon arriving at the Club, always ready with a smile, a helping hand or a warm conversation.
His outstanding contributions have been recognised through several awards, including the Distinguished Service Award (2015), Employee of the Month (2015) and the Above and Beyond Award (2010).
While we will certainly miss Vincent’s cheerful presence around the Club, we are deeply grateful for the many years he has devoted to our community. As he begins this new chapter, we wish him good health and happiness ahead in his retirement.
Thank you for everything, Vincent. You will always be part of The British Club family!
By Natasha Garcha, member of the Club since August, 2025
Every year on 22nd April, we celebrate Earth Day. In Singapore, this feels especially meaningful. We are one of the few cities in the world where rainforest, mangroves, coral reefs and freshwater streams exist within a highly urban landscape. Living beside Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, members of The British Club are quite literally neighbours to rare and remarkable wildlife.
This Earth Day, instead of looking outward, let us look around us.
Here are five extraordinary species that call Singapore home — and one simple action each of us can take to protect them.
Freshwater Crab (Johora Singaporensis)
Found only in Singapore, this tiny crab survives in forest streams within Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Central Catchment. It is Critically Endangered due to habitat disturbance and water pollution.
Family action: Reduce single-use plastics.
Why it matters: Plastics break down into microplastics that enter waterways. Protecting freshwater quality begins long before we reach the nature reserve.
Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale Perspicillata)
Once locally extinct, these otters have made a remarkable comeback and can now be spotted from Marina Bay to Bishan.
Family action:Make waterway walks “leave it better” walks — pick up safe litter and report sharp items via the OneService app.
Why it matters: Litter can entangle otters and harm the fish they depend on.
Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata)
Critically Endangered globally, hawksbills still nest on Singapore’s shores. They help maintain healthy coral reefs by feeding on sponges.
Family action: Choose sustainable seafood or enjoy more plant-based meals.
Why it matters: Responsible consumption reduces pressure on marine ecosystems.
Sunda Pangolin (Manis Javanica)
One of the world’s most trafficked mammals, yet still surviving quietly in Singapore’s forests. Pangolins naturally control ants and termites.
Family action: Take a “zero wildlife products” pledge.
Why it matters: Reducing demand helps curb illegal wildlife trade.
Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca Fascicularis)
Singapore’s most familiar primate and an expert social learner.
Family action: Practise “food invisible, bins secured” near macaque areas. Why it matters: Prevents human-wildlife conflict and keeps macaques wild.
Earth Day at The British Club
Mangroves buffer storms. Forests cool our city. Coral reefs protect coastlines. Biodiversity is not a luxury — it is infrastructure.
Living beside Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is both a privilege and a responsibility. This Earth Day, the most powerful action is simple: small, informed choices made consistently as families. Because protecting Singapore’s biodiversity begins exactly where you are.

WHERE MUSIC COMES ALIVE AT THE BRITISH CLUB
By Michelle Kuek, Member since June, 2012
According to American musical icon Frank Zappa, “Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.”
For many people, music is an entertaining addition to their day. For others, it is a quintessential part of life — a wholehearted expression of emotion and creativity.
The British Club Music Section welcomes all members who regard music as something more than mere background noise. Composed of an eclectic bunch of maestros, musos, melodists and hobbyists, the BC Music Section is a fun and welcoming space where it’s all about the music.
The flagship of the Music Section is the BC Band. With the kind support of British Club management and staff, the band meets on Tuesday evenings to rehearse and jam, and on selected Member Connect Nights to perform live on stage at the Windsor Arms.
Social events are held throughout the year, and gigs are sometimes requested by the British Club and other keen patrons.
Coming from a wide array of cultures, backgrounds and musical tastes, our fun and friendly band members are encouraged to contribute to the style and substance of the overall playlist. Love rock ’n’ roll? Let’s try your favourites! Feel like crooning to some ballads? Just name the song! Want to rock the house with some metal? Let’s go!
Whether you play an instrument, love to sing — or both! — the British Club Music Section is eager to welcome you with warm hearts, cold beer and a celebration of everything music means in this world.

MEET THE FACES BEHIND THE SPORT SECTIONS AT THE BRITISH CLUB
Sport plays a huge role in the lives of our members. From Barracuda swim sessions to social pickleball with friends or cricket matches near and far, our sports sections bring members together across all ages and abilities.
Behind each of the ten sport sections is a dedicated Convenor and committee, volunteering their time to organise fixtures, coordinate activities and help keep their sporting communities active and welcoming.
At a recent Sports Committee meeting, we gathered wearing our section kits, a great reminder of the variety of sports that thrive at the Club. It also felt like the perfect opportunity to introduce the faces behind each section.
Chair of Sport
Rob Annan
“Our sports sections are built on community and volunteer spirit. The convenors featured here play a huge role in making sport at the Club welcoming, active and fun for everyone.”
Cricket
Convenor: Subha Ganguly
The Cricket Section offers a relaxed and social environment for players of all abilities. Members enjoy weekly evening nets, regular matches in Singapore and Johor Bahru, and occasional regional tours, with the social side of the game continuing long after the final ball.
Golf
Convenor: Adam Bozeman
The Golf Section brings members together for regular rounds at courses across Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. With a mix of competitive outings and social games, it’s a great way to enjoy the sport while exploring fantastic regional courses.
Padel
Convenor: Jamie Salamon
One of the Club’s fastest-growing sports, padel combines elements of tennis and squash in a fun doubles format. Easy to learn and highly social, it has quickly become a favourite among members of all ages and abilities.
Pickleball continues to grow in popularity at the Club. Played on a smaller court with paddles and a lightweight ball, it’s easy to learn, fast-paced and highly social, making it accessible for players of all skill levels.
Squash
Convenor: Andrew Vine (Life Member) & Andrew Marshall
The Squash Section is a vibrant “club within the club”, bringing players together for social matches, leagues and competitions throughout the year. With four excellent courts, it’s a fantastic environment for both competitive and recreational players.
Tennis
Convenor: Richard Claydon
As the largest sports section at the Club, tennis offers something for everyone, from social games and leagues to coaching and clinics. Whether you’re new to the sport or a seasoned player, there are plenty of ways to get on court.
Barracudas (Junior Swimming)
Convenor: Danya Fox-Gapper & Lisa Thanh
The Barracudas programme supports young swimmers as they develop their skills and confidence in the water. Through squad training and competitions, swimmers build technique, endurance and team spirit.
Taekwondo
Convenor: Adam Slater
Taekwondo offers members the opportunity to develop martial arts skills while improving strength, fitness and discipline. Classes are open to a range of ages and abilities in a supportive and structured environment.
Football
Convenor: James McIlhagga

The Lost Samurai – BC Squash Tour to Japan
By The Boaster, Member since April, 2007
The BC Squash section went on tour to Japan in early March, playing fixtures against Yokohama Country & Athletic Club and The Tokyo American Club. Led by co-convenor Andrew Marshall, with support from a few old Japan hands in the group, the BC team played hard and partied harder despite setbacks. One tourist suffered a last-minute flight cancellation and was unable to make it to Tokyo, Yomi Benson was injured skiing the week before, and the two Bens injured themselves on the tour . . . Ben Kiggell while playing too hard (hamstring) and Ben Chandler while partying too hard (made it out of bed at dusk the following day, missing the second fixture).

Friday night at YC&AC was the first match. Our hosts’ welcome was as warm as the courts were cold. Winter squash is an unfamiliar experience for those living in Singapore, and the low bounce took a while to get used to, but the team learned fast and started accumulating wins. Team BC pulled ahead, only to lose some winnable matches towards the end, including the final one, which left us 9–8 behind in total.
Saturday afternoon saw the team assembling at the American Club, with Yomi miraculously recovered despite (or perhaps because of?) a long night in Roppongi and able to play. He, captain Andrew, star player James Buchanan and Stuart Bailey played almost non-stop and once again almost won the day, but the TAC team just came out ahead in the final reckoning. Despite the results, it had been a second day of great fun on court and in the bar afterwards. You’d have thought that after all that sport, an early night would have been in order, but somehow the team found the energy for another huge one in Roppongi. A truly impressive all-round sporting performance.

WITS Spring Season Serves Up Strong Start for The British Club
By Louise Gladstone, Member since August, 2015
The British Club WITS teams have kicked off their Spring Season with great energy and momentum. After a strong start, our teams are currently sitting mid-table — but spirits are high, competition is fierce, and everyone is fired up to climb the ladder in the weeks ahead.
For those who don’t know WITS (Women’s International Tennis Singapore), the league is made up of eight competitive divisions, bringing together clubs from across Singapore for weekly doubles match play. The British Club is proud to field five teams across the A, Beta, C and D divisions — a fantastic representation of the depth and strength of our women’s tennis community.
Each squad consists of 12 players who train together weekly at the Club, building partnerships, sharpening match play and strengthening team spirit. Matches are played once a week during the season, offering the perfect balance of competitive tennis and social connection.
WITS is more than just league tennis. It is a brilliant way to challenge yourself, improve your game and meet likeminded, fun and supportive tennis players. Whether you’re looking for serious competition or simply want to be part of a vibrant team environment, there’s something for everyone.
Behind the scenes, captains and coordinators work tirelessly to organise line-ups, manage logistics and ensure every player has the opportunity to contribute. The camaraderie that develops over the season is just as important as the results on court, with teammates cheering each other on, celebrating hard-fought wins and learning from tough matches. It’s this blend of commitment, resilience and friendship that makes WITS such a special part of The British Club’s sporting calendar.
If you’d like to learn more about WITS or are interested in getting involved next season, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you! Please email tennis@britishclub.org.sg for more information.
