Olivia: When we walked in the doors of the hole-in-thewall Mexican grill, Kristen and I knew that this place was legit (aka we were the only people speaking English). It fit Brandon’s description of him oftentimes being the only white guy there. I ordered the chicken gordita w/o cheese, sour cream, or guac (s/o to lactose intolerance). The gordita, despite its lack of dairy products, was still a little warm corn flatKristen: bread pocket of heaven: fresh and flavorChipotle’s got nothing ful. Kristen Lay: How are you guys tonight? Carlotta Cosials: Very good. Tonight is like a happy day and sad at the same time. It’s the last day of the tour and it’s been an amazing, amazing tour, so we feel like it’s kind of bittersweet. KL: You guys played New York City last night, how was that show? Ana Perrote: It was incredible. It was packed, close to six, seven hundred people. CC: A lot of people, and how crazy they were. AP: They all went on stage at the end. CC: Screaming since the first song, screaming so bad. People were super excited it was such a nice night. KL: So tonight’s the last night of your tour, and it seems like you guys have had a lot of fun. How has the past month been touring? I know you toured with Glass Animals first and now you have your headlining tour, so how’s that been? CC: I think there is a big difference between supporting Glass Animals and this one. We clearly didn’t belong to that thing, we were playing in huge theaters, we could never have done it ourselves. So it was so relaxing for us because you don’t have the pressure because nobody knows you in the audience, or almost nobody, and it was kind of— AP: It was good, like if you give a good gig, it’s great because you’re gonna have so many new fans, and if you don’t it doesn’t really matter. CC: And then the headlining tour with Public Access T.V. has been

the best tour we’ve ever done, sincerely. KL: That’s good to hear. So your debut album, Leave Me Alone, is coming out in January, and you guys said it’s not as cheerful as you thought it would be, but a bit sad, so why do you think that is, that it came out that way? CC: When we started to write songs all together, the four of us for the album, we thought a lot about the shows and stuff, so everything we wrote during the first months were with a lot of party and a lot of energy and a lot of screaming and all that stuff. But then we started to tour a lot and then we started to have no time to be in the other place that much. Then when we started to tour and don’t have time, we started to leave so many different things than the ones we leave before, when we were having our own lives in Madrid, that suddenly the songs were simply just not as thought for a show. It was just things that were written about things that were happening in that moment, so we have had a lot of different feelings during the whole year. AP: I think the fact that we wrote in your place makes it more cozy and more comfortable, and we weren’t in the rehearsal place and just wanna sound as loud as you can and as energetic as you can. So like you’re in a house and you don’t wanna party, you just wanna talk, chat, and be chill. And also I think it affects that it was the winter, so some of the songs were clearly inside in winter.

KL: Have you been playing some of your new songs from the album on this tour? CC: Yes, yes, all of them. Well not all of them, but yeah a lot, like half of the album is played. KL: I saw in your interview with Nardwuar that you guys got a signed Strokes poster, so as fans of The Strokes, do you think that they have an influence on your lyrics or your sound, and do they have an influence on this record? CC: Yeah, not the lyrics that much. He writes lyrics very different to us, he has a very casual way to talk, he has a lot of “alright, yeah, I’ll do it”, or something like that, and we don’t have that at all. But the music, of course, I mean when we were mixing, all we could think about is Is This It and Room on Fire as the main goal. Like you really can hear everything, and the drums are dirty, but not that much. We take them as an example for so many things. KL: So you guys recently announced a pretty big European and UK tour right after the release of Leave Me Alone, and so you guys must be pretty excited to go on tour and finally be able to play songs once the album is released. AP: I felt like it was never gonna happen, I just felt like we were just gonna keep playing and people were gonna know “Bamboo” and “Castigadas En El Granero” and that’s it, and I’m fine with that because they dance to the ones they don’t know, and I don’t know if it’s gonna change that much. I guess right? CC: Do you remember when yesterday in New York, they sang “Garden”, that was— AP: People with their eyes
closed, [singing] “I can take you dancing” [Laughs]. And a couple was kissing, it was so nice. CC: It was incredible, incredible. KL: The video for “Garden”, your recent single, was released last week, which I really enjoyed. What was your favorite part of filming that? Everyone: The chicken [laughs]. AP: Having the chicken was seriously so nice, taking care of her, giving her water. CC: “I think she’s hungry, let’s feed her” [laughs]. Ade Martin: And every time we took her she would poo. AP: Not really at the end, she never pooed on our dresses. KL: You’ve only been a band for about a year and a half, and you’ve already done so many things and have gotten so much success lately and attention, why do you think that is and was this anything you could’ve ever expected? AP: No one ever expected it to grow this fast, but no one can expect that. You can dream about it— CC: It wasn’t already thought or something. I don’t know if you’re asking that, “yeah, we’re gonna put these songs on the internet, and we’re gonna go touring worldwide and we wanna break the internet” [laughs]. No, not at all. It all happened pretty fast, but step by step. It wasn’t crazy because of one gig that came, it was step by step pretty fast. Like the day we release the songs, NME write us, and then we are on NME, and then a label call us, and then we gave our first gig, then we got our label in the U.S., and I mean everything was every week, but step by step. AP: Instead of three months, our decisions took like one week. KL: That’s everything I have for you guys, so thank you so much!

In the spirit of The Beat’s quest to explore Boston’s musical history, here is a presentation of what knowledge I can share with you compared to what knowledge Modern Lovers can impart on you. (Hint: The members of Modern Lovers give more intelligent insights bc multiple members of the band went to Harvard aka they’re smarter than me and probably you too).

@ BU Behavioral Health, As someone who has used the behavioral health facility at BU I can say flat out: it isn’t all BU WHAT’S UP? paints it to be. Their poor understanding of what is actually best in terms of meeting the needs of the student body is made most apparent through two aspects: the GSU depression screenings and the commitment to “short term care”. Let’s kick it off with those screenings. Tell me, if you were depressed, with little motivation to do things like go to class, socialize, eat, or were experiencing any other number or combination of symptoms, how eager would you be to make your way to BU’s self proclaimed “hub of student life on campus” and talk to a BU employee who likely will only tell you what you already know: you’re depressed. It’s a lame excuse for outreach, it’s unrealistic in terms of actually helping those who need help, but it’s a concrete event BU can show off as “helping”.
This leads me to the next problem: “short term care”. Student Health does not openly advertise their Behavioral Health branch as a short term solution; it is only after you have already scheduled an appointment and attended a couple of sessions that your therapist hands you a print out of all of the off campus providers you have to reach out to if you want further, more in-depth care. BU defends this practice by doing some weird patient-blaming by claiming that giving someone the care they require is “draining resources” that other students should have available to them. Based on my own conversations with people and general knowledge of mental illness, reaching out for help in the first place is A HUGE STEP and so THE LAST THING you want is to be pushed away by the one you reached out to, told “hey you have to go through that whole reaching out process again and BONUS this time you get to do it to a bunch of people who have no obligation to respond to you and will likely charge you heaps of cash money bills for their services!!!” BU, get it together. If you’re gonna keep acting high and mighty at least back it up with quality care. TLDR: BU likes to pretend the acknowledgement/existence of behavioral health is something incredible or admirable. <3 danielle bozzone

If you’re not a meat-eating kinda punk, chances are someone has asked you if you’re gonna have tofurkey for thanksgiving. The answer to that question is (or should be) NO because tofurkey is painfully disgusting. So here’s an alternative to the alternative to turkey. YOU WILL NEED - two slices of bread - two acorn squashes - some green onions - some garlic - 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts - 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds - sage, thyme, salt, pepper to taste - 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese (or fake cheese if u roll that way) - butter (or margarine if u want)
*note: all amounts are arbitrary. ingredients are fluid and time is a flat circle
1. Toast up that bread and cut it into squares (like croutons but not croutons because buying croutons is bourgeois). 2. Preheat oven to 350F. 3. Cut the acorn squashes in half and remove the seeds. 4. Oil a pan and lay the squashes face down. 5. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes or until a fork pushes through the squash easily. 6. Spread butter/margarine on top and inside so it doesn’t dry out! Important! 7. In a frying pan, sauté green onions and garlic in butter/margarine. 8. Add chopped walnuts, sunflower seeds, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
9. Stir in the bread crumbs and remove from heat. 10. Combine with the cheese. 11. Throw it all up into those squashes. 12. Put the filled squashes in a baking pan and cover with foil and oil and cook at 350F again for 25 minutes. 13. If ya dig it, you can put some cranberry sauce on top. If not that’s cool too! 14. Eat! Enjoy! Be merry! Praise your lucky stars that you’re not eating tofurkey!!!

B A N D C A M P hi. by The Color and Sound With a little bit of old-school angst and a lot of sweet guitar work, The Color and Sound cruises through their latest three-song album hi. with enthusiasm and some killer mixing skills. The first two songs, “Team” and “Come Over” feel like high-school-days spent driving through old haunts and hoping everything would taste better tomorrow. The last track, “Better View,” is an ethereal journey through an echoing forest, and the winding path through the trees takes you home again. <3 jessamyn wallace

R EV I EW S Verisune by Brittle Brian Beautiful and honest, this album has a kind of simplicity in words and emotional openness that breeds complex thought. Listen to this album when you need to reconnect with yourself. <3 anna leah eisner
Grips on Heat by Steep Leans A preface to this review: nothing I write will ever do justice to the piece of pure art that is Grips on Heat. The 41 chilled out minutes are filled with Jeff Somers’ rough, yet melodic crooning layered with undertones of surfy guitar licks and driving bass lines and drum beats. If your heart doesn’t skip a beat when “Nightmare City” comes on and Somers sings “It’s so shitty/ yr so pretty on a death trip cruisin to Nightmare City,” then you must not be alive. Since it’s No Shame No Vember, I will shamelessly admit that I listen to this album an average of 3-4 times a day, with a record high of 6 times in 24 hours. It’s THAT good. Stand out tracks? All of them. Best time to listen? All of the time. (Although to get the full effect, listen at a late hour of the night when you’re on the edge of exhausted delirium writing an essay.) A cool album with cool songs made by even cooler guys (who also play legendary shows, if I do say so myself). 11/10 <3 olivia gehrke

LOCALS 2 LOOK 4: SALTY GREYHOUND:
Formerly known as Brazil, Salty Greyhound was born in an infamous basement once called the Womb. Often during their live performances, Salty Greyhound’s whimsically painted bodies reflect an orchestrasted chaos also present in their music. Their playful, mischivious energy sucks in audience members like an angsty vacuum. Songs like “Machine” are infectious - if you don’t find yourself automatically swaying along to this LCD Soundsystem-esque jam, you may have lost your mojo. Seek professional help. At the same time, the music of Salty Greyhound has a childlike innocence that is sweet and inviting, like when your dog licks your face upon your homecoming. Listening to a more folky song like “Trees” simply makes me want eat warm cookies in the sunshine and hold hands with my baby. (hmu!!) Lead vocals alternate between Maria Cuneo and Alex Judd, who have an enhanting energy and vivacity. Also it helps they are both as cute and nice as the music they make. This month marks NoShame-November, so the Beat asked Salty Greyhound’s frontman, Alex Judd, for a few of his no shame fames. “A couple of years ago when I was even more hipster I would have said Shakira was a guilty pleasure, but I’m pretty open about that now. I do put an embarrassing amount of time into social media and Dr. Phil though.” Word on the street is Salty Greyhound is releasing some new tapes that don’t say “Brazil” on them. L’Homme Run As lead Vampire Weekend singer Ezra Koenig’s first (published) project, you would expect that it’s pretty rough. Surprisingly, though, Koenig’s and Andrew Kalaidjian’s rap duo is a far cry from most people’s first attempt at music.
