Changes brewing on Northgate Micro-breweries and new parking rates target daytime crowd Sean Lester The Battalion
T
he College Station City Council voted Thursday to allow micro-breweries and micro-wineries on Northgate. The council also agreed to raise parking rates in the Northgate district during game days and peak hours. Lunch parking prices were reduced from $0.75 per hour to no charge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a change that could help businessmen like Chris Steele, who has owned O’Bannon’s Taphouse for eight years and will open Blackwater Draw Brewing Company, Northgate’s first micro-brewery, in September. “Free parking for lunch, that’s great,” he said. “I own a business already on Northgate and we aren’t open for lunch, we don’t have food there. But I could see how it can benefit anybody, whether that’s the Dixie Chicken or anybody.” Beginning Aug. 19, game day rates in the Northgate Garage will climb from $10 to $20 while the surface lot and street meters will increase from $2 to $3.50 per hour. During peak hours of 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. on non-game days, surface lot prices will increase
from $2 an hour to $2.50 and street meters will charge $0.75 an hour, increased from their current free rate. The council approved changes as a result of the city expecting to lose $130,000 without a change in pricing. Currently the Northgate parking enterprise fund has not generated enough money to cover the cost of the garage and the costs associated with the maintenance of it, the surface lot and parking meters. “Sometimes we forget what the original purpose was for the parking situation that we are facing throughout the Northgate area,” Councilman Karl Mooney said at the meeting. “With that in mind, I don’t think it’s fair to expect that a parking garage on its own is going to pay for itself. We have to look at the parking operation throughout Northgate, which is what this particular plan does. Yes it increases the rates for the parking garage so it will be more responsible to it’s own costs.” With the changes, a projected $180,150 in See Northgate on page 2

First Fish Camp session to begin Tuesday Allison Rubenak

The first of seven Fish Camp sessions will begin Tuesday at the Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine, Texas. Grace Farrar, the director of operations for Fish Camp Staff, said the 6,100 freshmen participating represent an increase of around 1,000 students from last year’s attendance. Fish Camp strives to provide a welcoming atmosphere for freshmen to spend time with their future peers and to learn more about the University they are to attend. “Besides their New Student Conference, it’s the students’ first taste of the Aggie experience,” said Allyson Peters, sophomore interdisciplinary studies major and Fish Camp crew counselor. “It’s memorable because

Billionaire Aggie oilman Mitchell dies at 94
On Aug. 1, Texas A&M Athletics will be auctioning off articles from the recently closed G. Rollie White Coliseum after 59 years on campus. The items will be auctioned on Texas A&M’s official athletic website, AggieAthletics.com. Items will include the “G. Rollie White Coliseum” metal letters, the U.S. and Texas flags and the scoreboard. Pieces of the court and bricks will be auctioned off if the demolition contractor can conduct a successful salvage. The Battalion fter a life of service and contribution to A&M, the energy industry and the world, George P. Mitchell died at the age of 94. Class of 1940, Mitchell graduated with a petroleum engineering degree and later founded Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. and the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation. Mitchell’s life featured a wide range of achievements — including graduating first in his class, developing the Woodlands, pioneering shale gas technology, restoring the historic area of Galveston, donating the land for and supporting the Galveston campus of Texas A&M, helping A&M become a leader in astronomy and physics and pursuing efforts in creating a more sustainable planet. “My grandfather’s contribution to the world is truly remarkable,” said Katherine Lorenz, granddaughter of Mitchell and current Mitchell Foundation President. “In unlocking a new energy source, the world has fundamentally changed — and I think we are only beginning to see the impact this remarkable discovery will have in the world. Energy security and energy independence might well be possible after all.” University President R. Bowen Loftin said in a statement the death of Mitchell represented the loss of a visionary. “He didn’t see limits, only possibilities — possibilities that he converted into realities to fulfill his vision,” Loftin said. “His achievements have benefitted all mankind and certainly those of us in Texas and at Texas A&M.” After graduating, Mitchell began working for Amoco in the oil fields of East Texas and Louisi-

He met his wife, Cynthia Woods, while on a train to the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game between A&M and the University of Texas. They married in 1943. He was stationed in his hometown of Galveston overseeing engineering projects when the Mitchells had their first of 10 children in 1945. The Mitchell family moved to Houston when the war ended and he entered the oil business with his brother, Johnny, first as an independent consulting geologist and petroleum engineer and then as co-founder of Oil Drilling Inc. Their big break occurred when Mitchell saw
something in the geology reports of an area north of Fort Worth known as “The Wildcatters’ Graveyard,” which resulted in the discovery of one of the largest gas fields in North America. Mitchell soon turned to more sustainable energy sources and pioneered the field of shale gas drilling and processing, earning the name “Father of Fracking.” Peter McIntyre, a professor of applied physics at Texas A&M, said Mitchell revolutionized the energy field. “I remember asking him on several such occasions what he was working on with his company,” See Mitchell on page 3

ing the day and on game days, meaning many of the parking changes will have a great impact on Steele and his customers. “We’re competing with the rest of town on the food side during the daytime business, but we’re the only place in town where you have to pay to park,” he said. “So there’s a huge disadvantage there, and this will hopefully level the playing field.” Students have echoed Steele’s observations on craft beer’s success around the country. “Microbreweries will make people go visit Northgate during the day more, I believe,” said senior applied mathematical sciences major Johnny Gustafson. “But the real game changer is the micro-wineries.” Steele said the increased interest in localized brews from a hometown or home state makes the drinking experience more personal. “I think people take pride in their local beer, whether it’s even from their own state,” Steele said. “If we have a quality product, it’s something that this town will be proud of. It’ll be a destination spot.” Students like Julson said the parking changes and presence of micro-industrial businesses across the street from campus will certainly draw him and countless other Aggies. “I absolutely think a microbrewery would succeed at Northgate,” Julson said. “If there’s two things Aggies are known for it’s their loyalty to all things Aggie and their love for beer. Put those together and you’ve got a winning combination. Imagine if you could go to the Dixie Chicken or any other bar for that matter and get a maroon beer or an ‘Ole Sarge Stout’. I think that could very easily be the start of a new tradition and is something I’d be more than willing to get behind.”

McIntyre said. “He was very modest in answer, saying just some new ideas for how to get natural gas that no one but he believed was down there. I only learned later, when he had transformed the entire gas industry and America’s energy independence by making shale gas a success, that no one in the gas patch, no one in geophysics and no one in the government labs had believed in his ideas; indeed most had ridiculed him.” Mitchell also had a love for astronomy, which led him to contribute to the astronomy program at A&M. His donations funded several projects and led to the creation of the Mitchell Institute. McIntyre said he requested aid from Mitchell in 1983 that resulted in a laboratory in the Woodlands where the technology for high-energy accelerators was developed. “I came with my drawings and papers, and soon we were squatting on the floor of his office, him asking questions and becoming excited, I marveling that this man found my physics and technology interesting,” McIntyre said, adding that Mitchell agreed to fund half of the supercollider project he was proposing. It is no surprise that he gave so generously to A&M given how thankful he was for what A&M had given him. He wanted to help others like him succeed — he wanted others who grew up in poverty to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.” Lorenz said Mitchell’s contributions and impact on the world would be missed, but his dreams of sustainabilty would continue through the Mitchell Foundation. “The world has lost a remarkable person,” Lorenz said. “We are thankful for the important role A&M played in making him who he was. The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation will continue to support innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.” McIntyre also commented on Mitchell’s passing, saying that his vision, heart and mind would be missed. “George P. ormer Texas A&M wide receiver Ryan Swope caught passes at Kyle Field from names like Ryan Tannehill, who is entering his second season as a starting NFL quarterback, and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. Unfortunately for Swope, his success as an Aggie won’t translate into immediate professional success despite being drafted in the sixth round by the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona announced Thursday that Swope Ryan Swope would retire from the NFL due to concussion issues just months after being drafted. The team announced Swope’s retirement through the team website and placed Swope on the reserve/retire list. Being placed on the list means that should Swope decide to return to the NFL, his rights will still be in the hands of the Cardinals. “We knew Ryan has a concussion history in college and understood that it could possibly be an issue,� General Manager Steve Keim said on the Cardinals team website. “But weighing all the elements — the medical information available, the particular position in the draft — it was a decision we were comfortable making.� The move comes as part of a continued effort by the NFL to crack down on head and brain injuries in the game. The league is currently facing continual lawsuits from deceased former players whose families claim brain trauma contributed to players’ early deaths. “As it turned out, he had a setback after he got here,� Keim said. “Over the course

of the subsequent evaluations, we all decided that Ryan’s long-term well-being was the number one priority and this was the best course to take.� After suffering four concussions as an Aggie and watching his draft stock fall as a result, Swope took to Arizona’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs) where his fifth concussion occurred. It was then he made the decision to retire. “As a result of a concussion I suffered during OTAs, I was advised by doctors that there were serious risks in returning to play football at this point,� Swope said in a statement, never ruling out a return to pro football. “It has been a lifelong dream to play in the NFL but my long-term health interests outweigh my current goals for football. Because of that, I am electing to retire from the game for now and then reassess my future after this season.� He served as a team captain in 2012 and was one of the most consistent receivers ever at A&M, setting school records with 252 receptions for 3,117 yards and 15 career 100-yard receiving games. He finished second in school history with 24 career TD receptions. Swope plans to return to Texas A&M to pursue his degree. Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was at the Houston A&M Club Coach’s Night on Friday and said, “I got the feeling he still wants to play.� Junior biomedical science major Derek Hoefer said he hoped Sumlin was correct and that Swope’s retirement was not permanent. “It’s frustrating,� Hoefer said upon hearing news of Swope’s retirement. “I was looking forward to watching our all-time reception leader make a name for himself in the NFL. I’m sure it was a difficult decision, but the mature one. Health should be the number one priority for all players.�
