MESSAGE FROM YOUR COMMODORE

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE COMMODORE

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

COMMODORE COMMODORE

Fellow members,

In the February edition I indicated that we had made an offer to an individual for the position of Food & Beverage Manager. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Kris Jackman joined our Management Team as of March 23rd as our Food & Beverage Manager.

As you should all be aware, this position has been vacant for many years and there are a myriad of issues in our food and beverage operation. Some of those issues have short term fixes and solutions while others require longerterm planning, a more project management approach, to their resolution.

I am therefore asking that you please give Mr. Jackman an opportunity to, as we would say, “get his hands wet”, with regards to the issues we are all well aware of.

The uploading of data for entry into the new ‘Point of Sale’ software system is well underway. That information gathering and upload is being championed by Ms. Donna Murray, our Finance and Administration Manager. This process is not as simple as one may think. It involves the cleaning up of available data and its reorganisation to a format that the software requires, as well as the gathering of information not previously kept, but which will be required, to allow for better reporting. This will greatly assist in improving the operational efficiencies of the Club. I always say, “garbage in equals to garbage out”.

If we don’t take the time to start properly, the end result will be “one and the ” which we were previously getting.

We again ask members to be considerate when securing the beach chairs and tables. We understand that you may have guests and friends coming to join you but some members only require these facilities for a short period and are disadvantaged when these items are secured but are not being used at that time.

As we come to the end of the season, we wish to say farewell to those members who returned for the season and are now making their way back to their other home. We wish you safe travels and look forward to seeing you again soon.

And so, as I cast off, let me wish all of you and your families, a Happy Easter season. For those sailors competing in one of my favourite events, the Bequia Easter Regatta, we wish you a safe journey, lots of fun and merriment and a podium finish.

Your Commodore, Peter

Members are again reminded that all members' accounts at The Barbados Yacht Club need to be paid in full on receipt of the statement of account that is emailed to you each month.

Thanks to all members who continue to settle their accounts on a timely basis each month.

Unfortunately, at the end of February 2026 there were too many members whose accounts were past due. Accounts that are over 60 days are currently suspended however the Committee of Management will be enforcing the rules of the club in the collection of any arrears over 60 days and where necessary the suspension of membership of the delinquent persons per rule 14 of the Club.

We are all members of a private members club, we all need to pay our own way for the facilities and services we enjoy at the club. Late payment of members’ accounts places an undue burden on our club and adds significant work to our already busy administrative team.

We again ask for your full cooperation so that you may take the necessary action to settle all amounts owed to the Club in a timely manner.

MESSAGEFROMTHE MESSAGEFROMTHE GENERALMANAGER GENERALMANAGER

Warm greetings to all members,

Let me first thank you for your continued open communication with management. While there is always room for improvement, there are many things we are doing well, and your positive feedback is a great encouragement to the entire team.

To ensure we continue providing a safe and enjoyable environment, please take a moment to review these key reminders regarding our club operations and policies.

Security & Locker Access Reminders

We would like to remind members of the established protocols for our boating lockers to ensure the safety of your property:

Access Protocol: Members are required to sign in or request access prior to arrival for early morning trips. Please be prepared to provide your name and account number for verification by security before access is granted.

Liability: Please remember that the Club is not responsible for items left on boats or stored in lockers. Neither management nor staff have access to individual lockers.

Regular Checks: We encourage members to conduct periodic checks of their locker contents. This helps maintain the condition of your gear and assists management in following through effectively should any issues be reported.

Operational Standards

Glassware & Utensils: As a reminder, please return all glassware and utensils to the Boatshed immediately after use so they remain available for other members.

Contractor Access: If you have arranged for someone to work on your vessel, please notify security in advance. Standard access hours for contractors are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm unless a specific exception has been requested and recorded.

Cleanliness: We appreciate your cooperation in keeping your lockers and the area surrounding your vessel clean and tidy.

Administrative Policies

To ensure the Committee can review all cases fairly, please remember that requests for leniency or the waiver of doubled charges must be submitted to

the General Manager before the period for which you are seeking consideration.

The Committee is not obligated to grant requests, particularly those submitted after the fact, so proactive communication is essential.

Our Boatmen & Hauling Services

We occasionally hear concerns that our Boatmen appear idle. We would like to clarify that their availability is a direct result of our flexible "open access" model for haul and launch services. Because our members have the freedom to move their vessels as they please, our team is stationed to remain ready for tractorassisted boat movements whenever they are needed.

Adherence to our Club Rules and Boating Regulations ensures that our facilities remain safe and functional for the entire community. Thank you for your cooperation and your continued support of the club.

HUMANRESOURCES HUMANRESOURCES & & MEMBERSERVICES

MEMBERSERVICES

It has certainly been a busy winter season. One that has brought both many delights but some concerns. The HR & Member Services Sub-Committee members are meeting regularly to develop a plan addressing the key issues affecting both members and staff.

Following the temporary employees’ strike in January, the committee conducted a comprehensive staff survey to understand, from their perspective, what is working well and where improvements or solutions are needed. The key findings will be shared in the next issue of the Bellbuoy.

The Sub-Committee has also begun reviewing and updating the staff handbook. Once complete, it will be distributed to ensure that every employee has a copy and fully appreciates the importance of their contribution to the club's success.

We are currently reviewing our recruitment, onboarding, and training processes, and will be making recommendations to the Committee and Management for improvements in these areas.

A key focus of the Sub-Committee is strengthening service standards and consistency across the Club to ensure an excellent experience for all members.

In addition, we are reviewing and updating the visitor pass policies and procedures. We will produce a short guide for visitors outlining the club's relevant rules and practices, and how they can access the services available to them.

We are committed to keeping members informed and will provide regular updates on progress, improvements, and new initiatives as they are implemented.

Finally, as a sub-committee accountable to both members and staff, we welcome your feedback, whether suggestions, commendations, and concerns. To that end, we have launched a dedicated email address: hellobyc@barbadosyachtclub.com

Our plan is to log every message, track it through to completion, and respond to all correspondence. We are working to make this process as straightforward as possible. In addition, a suggestion box will also be available at the Bar for members who prefer to share suggestions, feedback, or concerns in writing.

PICKLEBALL PICKLEBALL

Let’s make some Noise!

If you walked past the pickleball court last Friday, you would have heard the distinct pop-pop-pop of ball meeting paddle and the sound of constant laughter.

The March pickleball tournament was another successful afternoon of friendly competition and high spirits. We continue to see new faces each month and welcome anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Congratulations to Bruce Banfield for taking first place, with Jane Clarke and Darrin White finishing in a tie for second.

Thanks to Paul Kellman for organising this event and for his dedication to bringing the BYC community together Special thanks to Greg Farnum and Anne Tindale for assisting with keeping score during the tournament, and to the BYC staff for preparing the court and helping with the drinks.

The feedback from participants was very positive, and they are all already looking forward to the next event on April 17th.

The "kitchen" is calling—come see what all the ‘noise’ is about!
