These Regulations were published and are on the Notice Boards, and they follow on from our Rules. We implore you to familiarise yourselves with the procedures, process and possible outcomes. If you require additional information please feel free to contact Ms. James, our General Manager. Last month I also made mention of the Committee’s intent for a phased approach to our improved security. I would like to expand a little further on some measures that will accompany that system once installed. Peter Thompson Commodore
Fellow members, In the June column mention was made to our consideration of the Pickleball expansion and offerings thereof. I am pleased to advise that it is our intention to install a set of “temporary” pickleball court markers on Court #1. This will allow for two (2) additional pickleball courts for those members who have been asking for more pickleball courts. I would like to advise however, that this court will need to be booked online by either the tennis players or the pickleball players. The court’s availability will be on a “first comefirst served basis”. Depending on the uptake for the use of the court, the Committee would be able to better gauge the demand for both pickleball and tennis and will be able to use this data to make informed decisions in the future. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing even more activity on this court in the near future. Your committee has recently approved regulations governing the procedure for complaints, abuse and other concerning activities that occur from time to time at the Club. Unfortunately, there are times where we have to deal with these unfortunate incidents and a formal set of Regulations were created.
There will be times where the security may not be at the station as mentioned, and guests who are legitimately visiting the Club will be at the gate without the member inviting them into the Club. In situations like this we cannot have persons sitting for extended periods of time at the entrance and possibly preventing members and other guests from entering the Club. Our plan is to have an intercom system that links to the office and an area in the beach facility. Any guest(s) entering the Club when the security is not at the station will be able to access either the office during normal working hours, or a supervisor on property after normal working hours. We note that on weekends and after hours the most likely place for a supervisor to be found is at the beach facility and hence the reason we are considering this area for after-hours intercom communication. As we proceed with our planning other issues may arise. We are happy to hear your concerns and address them so please give us your feedback so that we can deal with any issues or concerns before it becomes more expensive to fix. In next month’s edition, I will deal with the power of the card system we are considering as well.

"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor" African proverb This African proverb was a favourite of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served as the 32nd President of the United States, from 1933 until his death in 1945, and was popularly known for using sailing analogies to engage his listeners and make himself relatable. This particular proverb was used during one of his ‘Fireside Chats’ to encourage Americans during the Great Depression and World War II, which was a very bleak and difficult time in American History. It was thought that he sought to remind his electorate that the challenging times in which they were currently living should be seen as an opportunity for honing and expanding skills. We all learned a similar lesson during the recent COVID experience, which created a paradigm shift in our interpersonal relations and physical interactions, the scale of which has not been seen in decades. Therefore, a positive side of change can be considered as the opportunity it presents for the growth of new things through shifting perspectives. The same is true for us here at the Barbados Yacht Club, as we, through the diligent efforts of our Management Committee and the dedication of our loyal staff,

But although we can be, alas we are not, as there is always room for improvement. Just as smooth sailing requires the cooperation and open communication of a skilled and reliable crew, so does the successful management of this historic Club. Management needs to be open to receiving member feedback, whether considered constructive or not, and finding a way, wherever possible, to practically apply any information which may be useful in improving the Club as a whole. Members too can help by being forthcoming in sharing their observations and suggestions on the quality of the service they receive from staff, the attractiveness of the property and how this impacts their enjoyment of the facilities their membership offers. This in turn provides management with insight into member expectations and allows them to direct myself and the staff, whose job it is to continually exceed your expectations, and raise our status as a deluxe yacht club, not only in Barbados, but the Caribbean region. So please participate in the online surveys and feel free to use the suggestion box, as well as contacting me directly via phone or email, to share your observations, suggestions and concerns. Refreshed Vision for the Shot Hall and Culinary Experiences at the Club As we look ahead to the second half of the year, several initiatives are taking shape to enhance the member experience at the Barbados Yacht Club. With a particular focus on revitalising the Shot Hall Bar and revamping our food and beverage offerings, these upcoming changes are inspired by both member feedback and internal collaboration. Together, they signal a renewed sense of energy and community engagement across the Club. The Shot Hall: A Return to Community and Connection Plans are currently underway to relaunch the Shot Hall Bar with a refreshed atmosphere and updated offerings. Tentatively scheduled for October 1st, this relaunch will be preceded by a series of small events and themed evenings designed to build anticipation and reintroduce the space as a casual social hub for members. The vision for the Shot Hall includes: TV’s with streaming services to showcase key sporting events. Themed entertainment evenings. Enhanced seating and layout improvements. Further details on the relaunch and associated events will be shared in the coming weeks. Elevating Food & Beverage Experiences In parallel with the Shot Hall plans, several enhancements are being explored across the Club’s food and beverage offerings. These initiatives are being developed with the support of member feedback and in collaboration with our culinary team.
Key updates include: A full-time return of the Sunday BBQ Buffet, based on strong survey support. This offering will be complemented by new seating arrangements, shaded areas with umbrellas, and a streamlined reservation process to improve the member experience. The addition of new menu items and weekly specials, including the exploration of Bajan-inspired dishes and lighter, family-friendly fare. These updates will be aligned with the upcoming start of our new Food & Beverage Manager to ensure smooth execution. Morning service enhancements are in the works, with plans to introduce a coffee and pastry offering for members seeking light refreshments during early hours. For our afternoon tea enthusiasts, we are reviewing the variety of sweet and savoury selections, with an eye toward elevating this longstanding Club tradition. There is much to look forward to as we continue to evolve and improve the social and culinary offerings at the Barbados Yacht Club. These efforts reflect our collective commitment to making the Club a vibrant and welcoming social setting for members. Please stay tuned for upcoming communications, event calendars, and announcements as these initiatives move from planning to reality. The Massy Stores Dinghy Regatta The Massy Stores Dinghy Regatta, sponsored by Massy Stores, was sailed on Sunday, 29th July. Whilst conditions close to shore were idyllic for the Optimist Green Fleet, comprising sailors in their first year of competitive sailing, those racing out in the middle of Carlisle Bay were not so lucky. Battling fairly consistent winds in excess of 18 knots, with gusts up to 25 knots, even our most experienced sailors found themselves being tested to their limits. Summer Sailing Camp The first of the Barbados Sailing Association’s Summer Camps wrapped up last week and was a huge hit, with plenty of wind and fun. Sailors from as young as 8 years old learned new skills, made new friends and spent their days out on the water. These camps are an amazing opportunity for both new and experienced young sailors to build their skills and confidence. Sailing teaches teamwork, resilience and independence, and with three more camps to go, there are still many adventures ahead!

Happy Hour is back on Fridays! Join us from 4:30 to 5:30 PM and again from 8 to 9 PM for specials on all house pours, that is, our standard selection of spirits and wines. It’s the perfect way to wind down the week with friends and family. To keep the energy going, we’ll also have music playing over the club speakers every Friday evening. June’s Last Friday event with Jon Ryttersgaard brought great vibes, even with the rain. Father’s Day was a success, with a strong turnout for both the breakfast and lunch buffet. Many members also took advantage of the Discover Sailing experience, generously offered by the Barbados Sailing Association. Canada Day was a real highlight; the themed BBQ and drinks brought the club to life. Although weather postponed our 4th of July plans, Sunday’s BBQ made up for it with an excellent crowd. Kudos to the chef and kitchen team for consistently delivering delicious meals. The children had a wonderful time at the End of Term Party, especially enjoying the bouncy tent. We’re happy to report that it will be making a return before summer ends. We’re also gearing up for the End of Summer Soca Party on August 29, followed by a Backto-School Party for the teens on Friday, September 5. And for those who enjoy a challenge, Quiz Nights will be returning soon. Please stay tuned for more details.
