From the Deck of the Commodore We are holding a BBQ during the evening with entertainment by Sam and Dan The Band. All members, their guests and visiting sailors are invited. Other events are being hosted during the day at the Cruising Club.

I hope many of you were able to enjoy some of the events held at the Yacht Club during December and over the Christmas season. We have a lot going on in January as well. Barbados Sailing Week has begun. The Junior Dinghy races were held on the 13th and 14th January and prizes presented at the Opening Ceremony at the Cruising Club on Sunday, 14th January. The full itinerary of events during the week is on the notice board. The major event will be the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race on Sunday, 21st January.
The final award ceremony and after party will be at the Yacht Club on the evening of Monday, 22nd January. Errol Barrow Day is on Sunday, 21st January so the 22nd will be a bank holiday “lieu day”. Please come along and support our own and our visiting sailors. This month we will also be holding our AGM on the 30th January. An agenda for the meeting and copies of the minutes of the three general meetings held last year are on the notice boards and have been emailed to members. I need to remind members of our rules about guests. Security should be advised of the names of guests if they are arriving separately and the members must accompany their guests at all times while they are in the Club. Members are also asked to ensure they have the membership card with them when coming into the Club.
On Friday, 19th January we have a “Lay Day” and social events will be held in the Cruising Club and the Yacht Club.

SAILING HIGHLIGHTS Presentation of Sailing Awards by Anne Tindale The Club held its Annual Presentation of Sailing Awards on Friday, 15th December. Sailors and Yacht Club staff came together to congratulate all those who were successful in the various events held throughout the season and to thank the sponsors of these events, including Harris Paints, Lucky Horseshoe, Stansfeld Scott, Massy Stores and the Parker Family. What was evident at the presentation was the number of junior sailors who received prizes for their successes out on the water and the rousing applause they received as they accepted their awards from representatives of the different sponsors. Some of these juniors were in their first year of racing and had shown great courage and determination on the race course through, at times, very challenging conditions. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of two very special trophies, the first of these being the Dr. A. W. Trieloff Trophy for Youth Sailing. Presented this year by Dr. Trieloff’s daughter, Dr. Barbara Trieloff Deane, the Trophy is awarded annually to the junior sailor who shows the most improvement, with the best attitude and all-round sportsmanship throughout the year. This year it was presented jointly to two junior sailors: Amabel Chase and Joseph Whelan. These two up and coming juniors stood out in the selector’s minds for their overall improvement, great attitude and willingness to help their fellow sailors both on and off the water. The second of these special awards was the prestigious Alan Taylor Memorial Trophy in memory of avid yachtsman, Alan Taylor. The trophy is presented annually to a sailor who embodies Alan’s spirit and goes ‘above and beyond’ for the sport of sailing during the year. This year the award was presented to Jason Tindale who gavefreely of his time throughout the year to coach the island’s top junior sailors and to maintain all the sailboats and support boats needed to run the sailing and racing programmes.

HIGHLIGHTS CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY Lifting Spirits at Christmas The kid's Christmas party was held on Saturday 16th of December at the club and members once again welcomed kids from foster homes, children’s homes and the Child Care Board to share in the joy of Christmas. Once again, Santa was wonderfully played by our very own Nyron Weekes, and Mrs. Claus was again played by the lovely Rebecca Carter. The club cannot host this annual event without the generous support of its members and local businesses. We must offer our thanks to Banks, Bico, Chefette, Chickmont Foods, Hanschell Inniss, KFC, Laurie Dash and Zepherins Bakery for their generous in-kind contributions. We also wish to thank our members who gave large cash donations. This money enables us to buy a gift for each child from the homes.

BABY CHANGING FACILITIES We wish to remind members that there is an area for changing babies in the ladies changing room as well as the senior’s washroom which is only a few steps away from the beach.
