Fellow members,

As we chart our course towards the Club’s future and as indicated in the Resolutions passed at the AGM, acknowledge that we do need to act quickly on our pickleball offerings and so we are advising that, once the plans have been provided to you, as per the Resolutions passed at the AGM, an urgent response will be solicited. We will keep you informed on this matter.

We are approaching our summer period, which is traditionally a slow period. As you can expect, it is a challenging period for cash flow, particularly during the time when families travel for the summer period. We ask that you assist us in navigating this period by paying your account promptly. It is with your assistance that we will be able to continue to provide the level of service that we all expect to receive.

Finally, we note that we are having some challenges with regards to pests. We do have a pest control service provider and we are constantly changing the treatment methods so that it does not become “natural” for these critters. It appears however, that there are some critters that are still able to avoid the treatment methods being utilised and are also becoming quite bold. Rest assured that we are working feverishly to arrest this situation. We have discussed new treatment methods for these mature pests and hope to see the results in the immediate future.

And, as I cast off for this month, let me wish our Tennis team all success at the finals of the Interclub Tennis Championship and all of you an enjoyable upcoming May at our Club.

Warm greetings to all members!

It has been a busy few weeks with the Easter break in full swing. From a high-energy Friday night party to our fully subscribed youth camps, it’s been wonderful to see the Club so full of life.

To keep things running smoothly, please take note of the following updates:

For Boating Members

Document Deadline: Please submit vessel registrations and insurance renewals by May 31st, 2026. (Email: gmbyc@barbadosyachtclub.com or accounts@barbadosyachtclub.com).

Tractor Out of Service: Maintenance is scheduled for May 12th & 13th. Please plan your launches accordingly.

General Notices

Wall Repairs: The Radisson Hotel wall will be under repair from May 4th – May 8th (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM). We appreciate your patience while this "eyesore" is finally addressed!

Telephone Upgrade: The phone lines at the Club will be down on Monday, May 4th, while FLOW upgrades our entire network.

It continues to be an active period for the HR & Member Services Sub-Committee as we move from review into implementation across a number of areas impacting both members and staff.

Following last month’s update, we are now progressing work on several key initiatives, including improvements to recruitment, onboarding, and training processes, as well as strengthening service standards and consistency across the Club. The review of the Staff Handbook is also underway, with the aim of ensuring clear expectations and alignment across all teams.

We have also launched our Employee of the Quarter initiative, which is designed to recognise and celebrate members of staff who consistently go above and beyond. We strongly encourage members to participate by submitting nominations at the next.

At the same time, we continue to encourage members to share feedback, both positive and constructive. If we are not aware of issues, we are not in a position to address them. We would particularly welcome your views on how the Club can improve and enhance the overall member experience. Feedback can be submitted at any time via hellobyc@barbadosyachtclub.com, where all correspondence is logged, tracked, and followed through.

Work is also ongoing in relation to visitor policies and general member regulations, with the aim of ensuring clarity, fairness, and ease of use for both members and staff.

As always, we remain committed to keeping members informed as improvements are implemented and to ensuring that the Club continues to deliver a high-quality experience for all.

PICKLEBALL PICKLEBALL

In a Pickle

The paddles are swinging, balls are flying, and the energy is electric. Pickleball has exploded in popularity, tennis courts and players across the island are converting and new facilities are popping up all over. It has grown into one of the most anticipated parts of my weekly calendar.

Our recent Pickleball Doubles Tournament was another great success, an eight-player round robin format ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to partner and compete with different players.

At the end of the round robin stage, the top four seeds progressed to the finals: Justin Beausoleil, Greg Farnum, Paul Kellman and Paul DeCoteau. After a tense battle, Justin Beausoleil and Paul DeCoteau emerged as the winners. We encourage members to sign up for our next tournament in May.

Sadly, our modest carpark/court, while a wonderful starting point, is no longer meeting the needs of our growing interest. The surface is far from ideal; space is limited, lighting is poor. These are just a few of the issues why so many BYC members are going to other venues with better facilities.

Our eyes are firmly set on the day when we can step onto our very own dedicated pickleball courts - courts designed for the game we love, with regulation surfaces, permanent nets, proper lighting and space for spectators to enjoy. Having our own courts would mean more playing time, more revenue and more opportunities to welcome new members into the club.

While we wait, we will keep playing, laughing, and building our pickleball community because it is the people, the friendships and the shared victories that make this game truly special. Every great achievement starts with a vision, and so with every serve, rally, and high-five, we are building the momentum to make it happen

Easter Tennis Camp a Great Success!

BYC Tennis recently held its Annual Easter Tennis Camp over two weeks in the Easter Holidays. Approx 20 kids aged between five and fifteen years old had the opportunity to learn the basics and build upon existing skills whilst having fun and enjoying themselves on the court. The tennis sub-committee would like to thank “Coach Apple” and his team for making the camp such a great success!

May brings a vibrant mix of events at the Club, from themed dining to live music Whether you’re joining us for Cinco de Mayo, DJ Night with Trevor Perkins, our Mother’s Day Buffet or Last Friday, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We are also refreshing our “Last Fridays” with a broader mix of DJs and live entertainment, alongside updated formats and drink offerings to keep the evenings lively and appealing.

Planning is underway for Old Year’s Night, with entertainment confirmed and a focus on improving the overall experience, including theme, décor, and food.

Family-friendly events remain a priority, and we will continue to refine activities to improve structure and variety.

At the same time, we are focused on improving service standards, particularly at the bar and on the beach, and ensuring better alignment with food and beverage offerings

Looking ahead, we are exploring new ideas, including themed nights, daily specials, and interactive events to keep the calendar fresh and engaging.

We look forward to seeing more members enjoying all that the Club has to offer.

The Avril Parker Dinghy Regatta 2026 – Overall Results

The Avril Parker Dinghy Regatta 2026, sponsored by the Parker Family, was sailed over three Sundays in February and early March. The overall results are as follows:

The Lucky Horseshoe Offshore Regatta 2026

The Lucky Horseshoe Offshore Regatta 2026 was sailed in the waters of Carlisle Bay and the South Coast on Sunday, 22 March. Boats were split into two classes, with both classes sailing the same course comprising three windward/leeward legs along the Coast and two triangles in the Bay. Sailing in extremely challenging conditions, with winds gusting over 20 knots and periods of near calm, constant wind shifts of up ninety degrees, and squalls reducing visibility to almost zero, the skills of the sailors were tested to their fullest. Special mention must be made of 16-year-old Savannah Stuart who expertly skippered A-Salt Weapon through these difficult conditions. nd

Racing was followed by the Presentation of Prizes and After-race Party in Shot Hall Bar thanks to the generous sponsorship provided by Paul Johnson and Lucky Horseshoe. All who sailed were treated to some of Lucky Horseshoe’s delicious culinary delights, drinks and live music by none other than Alan Sheppard. For those who remembered the lively after-race parties of bygone years, it was wonderful to see some life return to Shot Hall Bar.

Discover Sailing for Kids

The Barbados Sailing Association hosted another extremely successful Discover Sailing for Kids 0n the afternoon of Sunday, 19 April. Head Instructor, Justin Slater, gave small groups of kids interested in learning to sail an introductory lesson. Each student then joined one of the Association’s junior sailors in an Optimist Dinghy where they were given the opportunity to sail the dinghy in the waters off the Yacht Club. th
