MINDSHARE THEATREWORLD EDITORIAL
There are moments in our industry when you can sense a change before the numbers fully explain it. For me, 2026 has been one of those years.
Issue # 109 September-November 2026
Cinema exhibition is not merely recovering. It is redefining what the theatrical experience means in a world where entertainment is available everywhere, at any time and increasingly on screens that sit inside our homes. The industry came together for the ninth edition of Big Cine Expo at Chennai. The event brought together exhibitors, distributors, technology companies, consultants, integrators and cinema professionals at a time when the Indian exhibition business is entering one of its most interesting phases. At Big Cine Expo, the conversations ranged from affordability and audience engagement to premium technology, F&B, AI, automation and the cinema operating model of the future. The presence of technologies spanning HDR, laser projection, premium large formats, immersive experiences and next-generation cinema solutions reinforced an important reality: the auditorium of tomorrow will be designed around much more than projection and sound. India’s box office has given us encouraging answers during the first half of 2026. According to Ormax Media, January to June generated INR 6,398 crore at the domestic box office, 10% higher than the corresponding period in 2025. More importantly, footfalls grew 5% to 37.8 crore, reversing three years of decline and stagnation. The final months of 2026 offer exhibitors a remarkable collection of event films. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has already demonstrated the continuing appetite for large-scale theatrical filmmaking, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reinforced the power of established franchises. The year-end calendar then builds towards films such as Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, alongside a wide variety of genre, animation and franchise titles. India has its own powerful pipeline. The response to the exclusive Ramayana footage presented by Prime Focus Studios at Big Cine Expo demonstrated the enormous anticipation surrounding large-scale Indian filmmaking and the potential for Indian stories to become theatrical events in their own right. And more highly anticipated films like King, Fauzi, Jailer 2, and Paradise, alongside some promising content-driven regional films. This is where technology becomes more than a specification sheet. Laser Projection, HDR, Immersive Sound, LED Screens, PLF Auditoriums, Recliners, Premium Hospitality and Sophisticated F&B are no longer simply upgrades. They are tools for differentiation. The question is no longer whether a cinema has the latest technology, but whether that technology creates a meaningful difference for the audience. As we enter the final stretch of 2026, I believe the industry has every reason to be optimistic, but not complacent. The numbers are improving. Audiences are returning. The technology pipeline is stronger than ever. The global studios are bringing increasingly ambitious films to theatres. And India continues to demonstrate that its appetite for cinema remains enormous. The challenge now is to convert a blockbuster-driven recovery into a sustainable culture of moviegoing. Because the future of cinema will not be decided by how many people come for one big film. It will be decided by how many of them decide to come back the following weekend. APPLE CINEMAS ANNOUNCES MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR TRANSFORMATION OF PROVIDENCE LOCATION
Apple Cinemas recently announced plans for a multi-million-dollar transformation of its Providence location, representing a major investment in the future of moviegoing and out-of-home entertainment in Rhode Island. The transformation is designed to take the traditional cinema experience far beyond simply watching a movie. Apple Cinemas plans to combine premium largeformat moviegoing, immersive entertainment, bowling, food and beverage, and dramatically redesigned social spaces into one modern entertainment destination. The extensive transformation will touch virtually every part of the guest experience, from the auditoriums and cinema corridors to the lobby, concessions, bar and entertainment areas. A centrepiece of the project will be the complete modernisation of Apple Cinemas Providence's auditoriums, combining advanced cinema technology with a significant upgrade in guest comfort. Every auditorium, from standard to premium, is set to feature new luxury recliner seating, giving guests a more spacious, comfortable and premium moviegoing experience throughout
the entire theatre. The upgrade is designed to make enhanced comfort a standard part of the Apple Cinemas Providence experience, regardless of which auditorium guests choose. The transformed theatre will also feature Apple Cinematic Experience (ACX), the company's premium moviegoing experience, equipped with Dolby Atmos immersive audio and state-of-the-art 4K projection. Dolby Atmos surrounds audiences with multidimensional sound, while 4K projection is designed to deliver exceptional image clarity, detail and colour - creating a premium environment for today's biggest theatrical releases. The transformation also includes a dedicated SCREENX auditorium, expanding the movie beyond the traditional front screen onto the side walls to create a panoramic, immersive viewing experience. Beyond the premium format experiences, the theatre's auditoriums will be thoughtfully redesigned to create a more contemporary and inviting environment, with a consistent focus on guest comfort throughout the property. The transformation builds on an important investment Apple Cinemas has already
completed at the property: the IMAX auditorium has been renovated and upgraded with the latest IMAX laser projection technology. Together with the upcoming ACX and SCREENX experiences and luxury recliner seating in every auditorium, the Providence location will offer guests multiple premium ways to experience major Hollywood, international and event-film releases. The project also represents Apple Cinema's broader vision for the future of theatrical entertainment. The transformation introduces a completely redesigned immersive bowling environment with contemporary lanes, dramatic lighting, digital displays, loungestyle seating and surrounding social areas. The plans also include a dedicated immersive entertainment area, with concepts including interactive archery, slingshot and drift-car-themed experiences. The goal is to create a destination where guests can spend an entire evening not simply arrive for a movie and leave when the credits roll. Guests will see the transformation from the moment they enter. Apple Cinemas plan a significant redesign of the main lobby, bar, concessions and guest gathering areas, creating a contemporary hospitality-driven environment with distinctive architectural lighting, comfortable seating and spaces for guests to meet, dine and socialise. The renovated beverage experience is also expected to include self-service beer and wine, providing guests of legal drinking age (21+) with greater convenience and choice, subject to applicable licensing and regulatory requirements. The multi-milliondollar investment reflects Apple Cinema's belief that the future of movie theatres is about more than adding better seats or larger screens. It is about creating

destinations. The renovated Apple Cinemas Providence will bring together new luxury recliners in every auditorium, IMAX with Laser, Apple Cinematic Experience (ACX) with Dolby Atmos and 4K projection, SCREENX, immersive bowling, interactive entertainment, food and beverage, and social spaces under one roof. "Our vision is to redefine what people expect when they visit a movie theatre. Movies will always be at the heart of Apple Cinemas, but today's guests are looking for a complete entertainment experience. With this investment, we're bringing together luxury seating, some of the best cinema technology available, bowling, immersive entertainment, food, drinks and social experiences - all in one destination," said Siva Shan, Co-Founder of Apple Cinemas. The project represents a significant investment by Apple Cinemas in the Providence market and reinforces the company's commitment to creating modern entertainment destinations built around the theatrical experience. Rather than choosing between dinner, drinks, bowling and a movie, guests will be able to make all of them part of one night at Apple Cinemas.

FEEMYARD UNVEILS NETWORK TO TRANSFORM AFRICAN FILM EXHIBITION African film distribution and streaming company FeemYard has officially launched its Campus Cinema Distribution Network, marking a significant milestone after engaging more than 50,000 students across Nigerian universities over the past six years. The announcement was made during the star-studded premiere of WhackAmole at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, signalling the company's transition from organising campus film screenings to building what it describes as a nationwide distribution ecosystem for African cinema. Reflecting on the company's journey, a FeemYard representative said its growth was built on years of grassroots engagement with university audiences. "Who could have thought we'd be digital in 2026? We started with physical film screenings at Delta State University, Abraka. Hauling projectors, organising comedy shows, outdoor parties, live events, forging campus alliances, and immersing ourselves in how young audiences engage with entertainment taught us lessons no boardroom could provide. Today, that foundation has become scalable infrastructure."
The company explained that the Campus Cinema Distribution Network is designed to offer independent filmmakers an alternative to the traditional cinema distribution model, where films often compete for limited screen time before disappearing from theatres. According to FeemYard, its new model combines physical campus screenings with digital distribution through its Virtual CineVerse platform, allowing films to continue generating audiences and revenue after their theatrical exhibition. "The physical-to-digital pipeline addresses one of the industry's biggest challenges by giving creators sustained visibility and monetisation opportunities long after their initial release," the company stated. The distribution network launches alongside two original productions. The first, Night of the 29th, is a period dramathriller set in the early 2000s that explores themes of love, division, identity and forgiveness. The film is scheduled for a nationwide university tour before its exclusive release on FeemYard's Virtual CineVerse later this year. The second, WhackAmole, is a crime thriller featuring Daniel Etim Effiong, Zack Orji and Olarotimi Fakunle. Designed as the foundation of a broader cinematic universe, the film follows its recent Abuja premiere and is being positioned for
international rollout in 2027. Beyond exhibition, FeemYard also introduced FeemForge, its creative development platform dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging African screenwriters and original intellectual properties. Through FeemForge, selected projects will receive development support, marketing opportunities, campus exhibition slots and access to the company's streaming infrastructure, creating what the company describes as a complete end-to-end pipeline for African storytelling. Industry observers believe the company's integrated approach could help address longstanding distribution challenges facing independent filmmakers by strengthening audience development and expanding access beyond conventional cinema chains.

company reporting more than 70 projects worldwide. The new screen was inaugurated with a special screening of BaXian (All Wishes Came True), an animated feature inspired by Chinese mythology. According to HeyLED, the screening showcased the technology’s visual depth, vibrant colour reproduction and immersive image quality, creating an experience designed to draw audiences deeper into the story. The launch further highlights the growing adoption of Direct View LED technology in the premium cinema segment, as exhibitors continue to explore larger and more immersive formats for the bigscreen experience.
ONECINEMA COMPLETES CLOUD-NATIVE DIGITAL SIGNAGE ROLLOUT ACROSS NORDISK FILM CINEMAS OneCinema GmbH, a trusted software partner for over 500 cinemas across 13 countries in Europe and North America, and Nordisk Film Cinemas, one of the leading cinema chains in the Nordics, have announced the successful rollout of OneCinema's cloud-native digital signage solution across Scandinavia. Spanning all 47 Nordisk Film Cinemas locations in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, the deployment was completed on schedule and seamlessly integrated into day-to-day operations, marking the platform's first major installation in the Nordic market. "A deployment of this scale across three countries is a result of the great synergy between our two technical teams", explained Jan Rasmussen, Head of Screen Technology at Nordisk Film Cinemas. "By launching OneCinema
Signage circuit-wide, we will fully automate our campaign management, reducing our team's workload while elevating the cinema environment for our audiences." The OneCinema Signage infrastructure is a full cloud-native enterprise platform. By communicating directly from the cloud, it eliminates the need for costly local server infrastructure at any site, running natively with Nordisk Film Cinemas' existing hardware. The solution runs seamlessly across Android-based players, Samsung Smart Signage, and LG webOS professional displays. With the rollout complete, Nordisk Film Cinemas can now leverage OneCinema's flagship automated campaign management. This advanced automation radically reduces the manual operational workloads while ensuring that every screen delivers highly relevant, localised content to moviegoers. Joachim Schmitt, CEO of OneCinema, added, "Through our cloud-native OneCinema Signage platform, Nordisk now benefits from a highly agile, automated ecosystem that delivers the right
content to the right audience. This installation proves that outstanding technology works best when supported by outstanding teamwork."

thirteen well-maintained, high-end Showcase Cinemas welcomed approximately four million visitors in 2025, generating more than 90 million in revenue. Showcase Cinemas provide enhanced food offerings and multiple premium large-format screens, with 80 per cent of all auditoriums featuring recliner seating in a stadium-style configuration. Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, said, "This acquisition allows us to expand our market position in the US from Michigan to the East Coast with an asset and a team that enable us to implement Kinepolis' operational model and corporate strategy, ultimately enhancing the experience for moviegoers in these markets. Furthermore, this acquisition provides a valuable real estate position, with future opportunities for further redevelopment and optimisation being explored." The acquisition has an enterprise value of 30 million, largely covered by the substantial real estate value of the owned US Showcase Cinemas. In 2025, the company achieved approximately break-even theatre-level cash flow.
VUE CINEMAS WELCOMES UK APPROVAL OF PARAMOUNT-WARNER BROS. MERGER
pandemic through to the Hollywood strikes, and this decision is an important step towards providing the final level of certainty for the sector. "This summer is shaping up to be one of the strongest summers on record, with Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey already passing over 1 billion at the box office and Spider-Man: Brand New Day passing 1 billion in six days and now firmly on its way to join the 2 billion club as one of the highestgrossing movies in history. The Spider-Man trailer was viewed by well over one billion people, leading to an incredible record-breaking number of advance ticket sales being made, surpassing our previous biggest pre-sale record by more than 90 per cent. It was also one of our biggest box office weeks ever, with well over three million of our customers joining us for the incredible big screen experience. Meanwhile, the ongoing sell-out screenings for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, Minions and Monsters and Moana underline the extraordinary strength of the theatrical slate this year. It is another reminder that when the films are there, the audiences will come in record-breaking numbers, and there are many more exceptional releases still to come this year. "The industry now needs
final certainty so it can focus on what matters most: making and releasing great films. David Ellison is a highly respected filmmaker who has consistently demonstrated a long-term commitment to featurefilm making and theatrical exhibition. We believe the industry will be stronger with Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery coming together, rather than competing separately. The time, money and energy invested in this process should be directed back into creating the next generation of films for audiences around the world. "As Europe's largest privately held cinema operator and one of the largest in the world, we believe that this combination will strengthen the theatrical ecosystem and will support an even greater investment in feature films. We are seeing an unprecedented investment in feature filmmaking from the legacy studios and Amazon MGM, Apple, Lionsgate, A24, Canal+ and so many others; the future of theatrical exhibition has never looked better. A deal has to happen, so we are hopeful that the remaining regulatory processes will not be delayed further and allow for the expeditious combination of two amazing studios to be concluded so they can bring even more great stories to audiences worldwide."
Tim Richards, founder and CEO of Vue Cinemas, recently conveyed that, "We welcome today's decision from the UK's Competition and Markets Authority to approve Paramount Skydance's proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, following the European Commission's approval in July. It has been an incredibly challenging six years for our industry, from the

Streams: Beyond regular film screenings, the private auditorium can be utilised for corporate events, product launches, and private gatherings, generating additional non-ticket revenue for the cinema. Strengthened Brand Prestige: As the first cinema in the Middle East to adopt a front-maintenance 4K HDR DCI LED screen, Iraqi Cinema sets an industry benchmark in technological innovation and user experience, effectively elevating its brand leadership and influence within the region. The HeyLED 6M4K DCI screen not only offers a distinctive viewing experience but also delivers tangible commercial benefits for cinema operations through its innovative technical design: Reduced Maintenance Costs and Downtime: As the Middle East’s first high-end LED screen featuring front-maintenance technology, it significantly streamlines daily maintenance procedures, minimising operational disruptions. Ultimate Picture Quality Driving Occupancy Rates: With 4K ultra-high definition, an astounding 60,000:1 contrast ratio, and a peak brightness of 300 nits, the HeyLED screen delivers breath-taking image detail and colour depth. Ultimate Comfort and Sound: The Premier LED auditorium pairs this groundbreaking DCI direct view technology with a premium Dolby Atmos sound system and luxury fully reclining seats, ensuring a top-tier immersive environment for every guest. The successful deployment of the HeyLED 6M-4K DCI screen is a testament to the close collaboration between HeyLED and its exclusive Middle East partner, Scrabble. ‘THE ODYSSEY’ TRIUMPHS AS HIGHEST GROSSING IMAX RELEASE OF ALL TIME The record-breaking run of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in IMAX reached yet another new milestone this weekend, taking the crown as the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time with 289 million in less than a month of play. The mythic action epic earned another 37 million worldwide on IMAX screens, which account for more
than 26% of the film's overall global box office across its run to date. The strong performance lifted IMAX to an astounding fourth consecutive weekend of 50 million-plus at the global box office with 52 million worldwide; before the release of The Odyssey, IMAX had never delivered even two 50 million weekends in a row. "On behalf of IMAX, I want to extend our congratulations and deepest gratitude to Chris, Emma, the entire team behind The Odyssey and our friends at Universal on this monumental achievement shattering our longstanding box office record with at least a month left to run on IMAX screens worldwide," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "We had the very highest of hopes for The Odyssey from the start, but it somehow continues to exceed them, and its historic performance is headlining what we expect will be our best year ever at the global box office." In North America, The Odyssey generated 9 million, lifting its Domestic total to 147 million in IMAX - the highest-grossing domestic release of all time. Internationally, the film earned 28.5 million, including its debut in South Korea, where it achieved the highest-grossing IMAX opening weekend ever in the market. IMAX 70mm Film locations, the goldstandard 18K presentation available at just 41 IMAX auditoriums worldwide, have grossed an astounding 37.5 million to date, led by the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, which has grossed 2.8 million to date - the highestgrossing single-title box office for any IMAX location in North America. With nearly 40 million in pre-sales for future showtimes and sell-outs for weeks in advance, The Odyssey will continue to play in the IMAX global network through at least September.

CINEMACITY STARLIGHT, ABU DHABI:
ARTISTRY DEFINES THE CINEMATIC SPACE
There is a moment, just before the lights dim, when a cinema reveals what it values. Before a single frame appears on screen, its architecture, lighting, materials, and atmosphere have already begun to shape the experience. At this cinema in Abu Dhabi, those moments have been given as much attention as the film itself. Opened in March 2026, the ninescreen venue, including the 550-seat Starlight Theatre, presents cinema as a cultural and social destination rather than simply a place to watch movies. A Contemporary Return to Cinema's Golden Age The design of Cinemacity Starlight draws inspiration from the glamour
of the Art Deco era and the golden age of cinema, but it does not attempt to reproduce the past. Instead, the designers have interpreted its visual language for a contemporary audience. Rich timber, marble, patterned fabrics, bespoke furniture, warm metals and theatrical lighting establish a sequence of spaces that feel closer to private salons and historic picture palaces than conventional multiplex environments. Geometric forms, layered textures, carefully considered detailing and warm illumination create an atmosphere that feels theatrical even before guests enter an auditorium. The Art Deco influence therefore functions as part of the architectural vocabulary rather than as a decorative theme. It shapes the character of the public areas,

The result is a contemporary interpretation of the cinematic aesthetic of the 1920s, combined with the intimacy and atmosphere associated with a private members' house. This approach gives the cinema a sense of occasion. Instead of encouraging guests to move quickly from the entrance to their auditorium, the environment invites them to pause, explore and settle into the surroundings.
Designing the Journey before the Film At Cinemacity Starlight, the cinema experience begins long before the opening credits. The entrance, lobby and social spaces establish a transition from the everyday world into a more theatrical environment. Architecture, lighting, materials and atmosphere are carefully composed to make the journey itself part of the experience. The philosophy responds to a fundamental challenge facing contemporary cinema exhibition. Audiences can increasingly access films from the comfort of their homes, making the physical cinema experience more important than ever. A successful cinema therefore has to provide something beyond the film itself,
something that cannot be easily replicated by a television or streaming platform. Starlight addresses that challenge by making the venue a destination. Guests can arrive before a screening, spend time within the social areas, dine, enjoy a drink, listen to music or encounter live entertainment. The evening does not have to begin with the film or end when the credits roll. The idea is that entertainment can move throughout the entire house. A pianist or the self-playing piano can create an atmosphere in the 1927 club section as guests arrive. A singer, magician or stand-up comedian can appear before a screening, while more intimate performances can take place in The Cabaret, or another event
can occupy The Guild. Larger productions can then take over the Starlight stage. In this sense, the cinema becomes a collection of stages rather than simply a collection of screens. The concept recalls an era when moviegoing itself was considered entertainment.
Every Auditorium Has Its Own Character The same philosophy continues inside the screening rooms. Rather than applying one standard interior across all nine screens, each auditorium has been given its own identity through variations in colour, materials, detailing and spatial character. At the same time, a consistent architectural language connects the individual rooms to the wider Starlight environment. Comfort has been integrated into

The seating, designed and customised specifically by Ferco Seating, met the design, comfort and functional requirements of each auditorium. The approach ensures that seating becomes part of the overall composition of each room. It contributes to the visual identity of the auditorium while also supporting the practical requirements of a premium cinema experience. The venue offers three levels of seating experience. VIP seats feature large electric full recliners, spacious tables, pillows, blankets, and call button service. Club seats provide electric semirecliners with larger tables, while Deluxe seats offer semi-reclining comfort with compact tables and in-seat ordering.
Technology That Enables Transformation Technology remains an essential part of the Starlight proposition, but much of it has deliberately been integrated into the architecture rather than presented as a visual statement. Five of the nine screens feature Dolby Atmos sound
"My father belonged to a generation that believed going to the cinema should feel special. With Starlight, we wanted to carry that belief forward, not by recreating the past, but by bringing back its sense of occasion. Film, theatre, music, food, architecture and hospitality belong together. Technology allows us to transform these spaces constantly, but ultimately the ambition is very simple: when people come here, we want them to feel that they have gone out for an evening they will remember." – Hammad Atassi, Chief Executive Officer & Founder, Cinemacity systems, while the venue incorporates professional sound, event lighting, stages and infrastructure designed to support uses beyond conventional film exhibition. The 550-seat Starlight Theatre is the clearest expression of this flexibility. Designed to function as both a cinema auditorium and a live performance venue, it can accommodate film screenings alongside theatre, concerts, comedy, premieres, cultural gatherings, private productions and other events. This adaptability allows the space to continually
change its personality. A cinema auditorium can become a performing arts venue, while the same architectural environment can support a premiere, a cultural programme or a private production. Technology therefore becomes an enabler of flexibility rather than an end in itself.
Hospitality as Part of the Experience Hospitality has been considered with the same attention as cinema and design. The objective extends beyond the traditional cinema concession model, placing food, beverages and service at the heart of the evening. Guests can dine within the venue or enjoy food directly from their VIP seats. The menu moves well beyond conventional cinema fare, with dishes including Wagyu Carpaccio, Lobster Linguine, Dover Sole, Truffle Paccheri and Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza. Even familiar cinema snacks have been reinterpreted through a more sophisticated culinary approach. Truffle Arancini, Smoked Salmon and Caviar Pizzetta and fresh black truffle fries bring a sense of occasion to the food offering.

• SPECIAL STORY • The wine programme follows a similarly ambitious direction. It moves from accessible wines by the glass to Burgundy, Bordeaux and Italian labels, alongside prestigious names such as Dom Pérignon, Krug, Sassicaia, Château Haut-Brion and Mouton Rothschild. Cocktails and a full spirits programme further reinforce the venue's hospitality credentials. The intention is clear. Food and drink are not positioned merely as conveniences before a movie. They form part of the experience and contribute to the idea that a visit to Starlight can occupy an entire evening.
1927: A Private Club within the Cinema The concept is taken further through 1927, which introduces the intimacy and exclusivity of a private members' club into the cinema environment. The space brings together dining, wine, conversation, music and performance through interconnected areas including the lounge, The Cabaret, The Guild and The Vault. Rather than functioning simply as a waiting area before a film, 1927 has been designed as a destination where members can spend an entire evening. Its presence reinforces the broader philosophy behind Starlight. The traditional boundaries between cinema, theatre, restaurant, bar and private club begin to disappear. Each function supports the others, creating an environment in which entertainment can happen across different spaces and at different scales.
From Cinema to Cultural House Perhaps the most significant aspect of Cinemacity Starlight is its ambition to redefine what a cinema building can be. Cinemacity has positioned the venue around film, music, theatre, events, arts, design
and hospitality. Dedicated stages and flexible spaces allow the building to accommodate performances, workshops, private events and cultural programming in addition to conventional screenings. This reflects a wider evolution in cinema exhibition. The contemporary theatre increasingly needs to function as a destination where audiences can meet, dine, experience entertainment and participate in cultural activities. Starlight responds to that evolution through an environment where the architecture does not compete with cinema but expands the meaning of the cinema visit. The film remains central, but it becomes part of a larger experience shaped by design, comfort, hospitality, social interaction and live entertainment.
An Experience That Begins at the Door Cinemacity Starlight ultimately demonstrates how architecture can
redefine the cinema visit without competing with the film itself. Its Art Deco-inspired interiors, individually characterised auditoriums, premium seating, hospitality-led service and multifunctional Starlight Theatre work together to create an environment where cinema becomes part of something larger. The venue represents a vision of cinema exhibition in which technology is only one element of the proposition. Atmosphere, craftsmanship, comfort, food, service and social interaction carry equal weight. In bringing together the traditions of the grand picture palace with the flexibility of a contemporary entertainment destination, Cinemacity Starlight creates a model in which the cinema visit can once again become an occasion. The story does not begin when the screen lights up. It begins the moment the audience walks through the door.

METRO PRIVATE CINEMA:
CHELSEA'S NEW BLUEPRINT FOR BESPOKE CINEMA The era of the 'One Size Fits All' megaplex is fading, replaced by a demand for intimacy and curation. In the heart of Chelsea, a new venture is flipping the script on the traditional cinema model by trading massive auditoriums for high-tech sanctuaries. This project reimagines the silver screen as a private lounge, blending the prestige of a premier film festival with the comfort of a high-end living room. A New Dimension of Privacy While the industry often focuses on maximising seat counts, Metro Private Cinema prioritises the space between them. It features 20 private screening suites designed for groups of 4 to 20 guests. Think of it as a 'digital campfire'-a place where the communal magic of movies remains, but the distractions of a hundred

THE DELTA:
REINVENTION FROM THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE
The Golden Age The cinema first opened its doors in the 1930s, an era when movie palaces were cultural landmarks and cinema was the most magical form of mass entertainment. Originally built as a single-screen venue with 625 seats, the cinema also featured a stage in front of the screen. This design reflected the entertainment culture of the time. Much like a town square that hosted many gatherings, the cinema doubled as a venue for stage plays and live performances. Audiences did not simply watch films there. They experienced a broader world of storytelling. Architecturally, the building embraced the elegance of the Art Deco era. Its neon marquee became a visual signature on Brentwood's streets, glowing like a beacon that signalled the arrival of evening entertainment. By the early 1990s, the theatre adapted to
shifting exhibition trends. The single auditorium was divided into two screens, a move that mirrored the wider transition in the cinema industry. Splitting the auditorium allowed operators to increase programming flexibility and improve utilisation of the venue. Despite this change, the cinema operated primarily as a second-run cinema during the early to mid-1990s.
Every historic theatre carries two stories. One unfolds on the screen, while the other quietly unfolds on the seats, aisles, and walls that have witnessed decades of audiences come and go. In the heart of downtown Brentwood, California, one such theatre has once again come alive after years of silence. This venue stands as a reminder that even small neighbourhood cinemas can reinvent themselves while preserving their soul. Its revival is more than a reopening. It represents the resilience of community cinemas in an industry often dominated by large multiplex chains. Restoration and Reinvention In 2000, the cinema entered a new chapter after being acquired by CineLux Theatres. Operating with about 320 seats across two auditoriums, it remained a familiar gathering spot for the Brentwood community for nearly two decades. That run paused on March, 2020, when the cinema closed during the global disruption caused by COVID19. The screens went dark for more than four years before a local group stepped in to restore the historic venue. That vision began to take shape in 2024. The building underwent extensive renovations that respected its historic character while introducing modern cinema

It was first restored in the late 1990s and again during the most recent renovation. The project did not simply update equipment. It reimagined the cinema experience. Seating capacity was reduced from 320 to 164 seats, roughly 80 seats per auditorium. The decision reflected a clear shift toward comfort and premium presentation. In cinema design, fewer seats often translate into greater audience satisfaction. The change allowed the venue to create wider spacing, improved sightlines, and a more intimate viewing environment. After years of anticipation, the cinema reopened to the public in June 2024 under its refreshed identity as The Delta. The reopening began with a screening of Inside Out 2 on June, 2024. One day earlier, during a series of VIP soft opening events, guests experienced a short film celebrating Brentwood's local history.
"The Delta Theatre of Brentwood is the anchor, and it's the anchor for downtown, which is very vibrant. But without the cinema operating, we felt, it just wasn't going to work; everything is brand new in here: the screens, sound system, everything." – Sean McCauley, Co-Owner, Delta Theatre Surround Sound. The installation ensures that sound travels across the room with clarity and precision. In practical terms, this means audiences do not just hear a film. They feel immersed in it. Sound moves through the auditorium the way wind moves through a forest, surrounding the viewer rather than arriving from a single direction. A new projector system further enhanced image quality, bringing contemporary brightness and clarity to the historic venue.
Redefining the Comfort Perhaps the most distinctive element of the cinema's new concept is its approach to seating. Instead of choosing a single seating style, the venue offers two options within each auditorium. Some guests prefer plush recliners that transform a movie into a lounge-like experience. Others favour traditional cinema seating that keeps them upright and engaged with the screen. The cinema offers both. The newly manufactured

Each recliner includes a swivel dining table, allowing guests to enjoy snacks without balancing containers on their laps. The ergonomic controls enable smooth and quiet reclining motion. In addition, the seats feature antimicrobial finishes to enhance hygiene. The material choice is also intentional. Instead of cloth upholstery, the seats use premium surfaces that are easier to maintain and more durable over time. Alongside the recliners, they introduced what it calls the Duet seating concept. These high-back conventional seats include individual armrests and cup holders while also allowing an optional loveseat style pairing. Each pair functions independently from the next, ensuring that guests maintain personal space even in a shared row. The arrangement is both practical and flexible. In simple
terms, it offers the comfort of modern seating while preserving the familiar feel of traditional moviegoing.
A Venue Beyond Movies It also maintains its legacy as a multi-utility venue. One auditorium retains both screen and stage capability, making it suitable for private rentals and community events. On-screen advertising is available as well, creating additional revenue opportunities that support the operations. For independent and community-focused cinemas, such diversified uses often play a critical role in long-term sustainability.
Benchmark for the Community The revival of The Delta Theatre illustrates an important lesson for the exhibition industry. Success does not always depend on scale. Sometimes it depends on understanding what audiences truly value. Since reopening, the cinema has received a strong audience reception. Based on user reviews from platforms such as Yelp and Google, it has averaged an impressive 4.6 out of 5 stars. These ratings positioned it as one of the best-reviewed first-run cinemas in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a cinema with fewer than two hundred seats, that level of audience satisfaction is significant. Comfort, thoughtful design, modern technology, and community connection can transform even a small historic venue into a vibrant cultural destination. In many ways, the cinema functions like a carefully restored classic film. The structure remains rooted in history, yet the experience feels new again.

The ambitious project was delivered through a close collaboration between GDC, Tricorne Premium LED, and local system integrator Equipo de Cine, bringing together expertise in display technology, cinema systems, and installation.
Built with Precision Projects of this scale typically demand extensive installation periods and large technical teams. This installation, however, challenged those expectations. Despite the complexity of deploying one of Europe's most advanced cinema LED auditoriums, the complete system was installed within just 30 days by a four-person technical team. The achievement highlights not only the maturity of the technology but also the efficiency of the engineering and planning behind the project. The result is an auditorium that combines advanced visual technology with thoughtful architectural integration, designed specifically for premium theatrical presentation.
"From an integration perspective, this project demonstrated that large-format acoustically transparent LED can be deployed efficiently without compromising performance. The combination of modular design, precise alignment, and a certified playback ecosystem allowed us to meet both technical and operational targets within a very tight schedule." – Juan García, Chief Technical Officer, Equipo de Cine This enables the front speakers to remain hidden behind the display, ensuring dialogue and on-screen effects originate precisely from their intended locations. By preserving natural sound localisation, the system eliminates many of the
acoustic compromises traditionally associated with non-perforated LED cinema screens. It also supports all leading immersive audio formats, creating a seamless relationship between picture and sound that strengthens audience immersion.
Sound without Compromise Perhaps the most defining feature of the installation lies not in what audiences see, but in how they hear. Unlike conventional LED cinema displays that require loudspeakers to be positioned around the screen, the Tricorne Premium LED display incorporates a micro-perforated surface that allows sound to travel directly through the screen.

The curved direct view LED screen measures 17 metres wide by 7 metres high, extending from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Featuring a fine 3.3 millimetre pixel pitch, the display delivers HDR imagery that exceeds 4K resolution while maintaining exceptional colour accuracy and detail. Its curved design enhances the audience's field of vision, creating a more enveloping viewing experience while ensuring visual consistency throughout the auditorium. The display also supports direct-view 3D presentations. Leveraging the inherent brightness and contrast of LED technology, the system produces brighter, sharper, and more immersive three-dimensional imagery with ultra-low crosstalk, offering audiences a richer experience for blockbuster releases and event cinema programming. Smart Behind the Scenes While audiences experience the visual and audio spectacle, much of the innovation operates behind the scenes. The auditorium integrates GDC Cinema Automation CA2.0, providing centralised scheduling, playback automation, and real-time monitoring across the cinema complex. The platform automates feature and trailer playback while enabling operators to efficiently manage extensive content libraries across all 12 auditoriums.
"This project is proof that LED cinema has come of age. A fully DCI-certified, acoustically transparent LED solution at this scale isn't just a technical achievement - it's a game-changer for exhibitors and audiences alike. The HDR visuals we're delivering here simply cannot be achieved with conventional projection technology." – Dr. Man-Nang Chong, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, GDC Technology
Connected through the SCL 3000 Live Streaming Library Server, the system supports scalable content management and live streaming capabilities, offering exhibitors a streamlined operational workflow alongside the premium presentation experience.
The Road Ahead The Madrid installation represents more than a technological showcase. It demonstrates how cinema LED technology has matured into a practical solution for
premium exhibition, combining exceptional picture quality, authentic sound reproduction, immersive three-dimensional presentation, and intelligent automation within a single auditorium. As exhibitors continue exploring ways to differentiate the theatrical experience from home entertainment, installations such as this provide a compelling blueprint for the future. They show that the next generation of premium cinemas will not be defined by a single innovation, but by the seamless integration of advanced display technology, immersive audio, and smart operational systems. With Europe's first fully acoustically transparent HDR cinema LED auditorium now in operation, the industry has gained another powerful example of how technological innovation continues to reshape the future of the big screen. • TECHNOLOGY • Designed for Intimacy and Comfort With three screens and a total seating capacity of around 150, the cinema prioritises intimacy over scale. Each auditorium is equipped with an energy-efficient laser projection and advanced sound systems, delivering high-quality visuals and immersive audio. Tiered seating, generous legroom and carefully planned sightlines ensure that every seat offers a comfortable and engaging viewing experience. A variety of seating options further enhances this comfort, ranging from standard seats to luxury recliners and sofas for two. This flexibility allows audiences to personalise their experience, whether they seek a casual outing or a more relaxed and indulgent setting.

Each screen includes dedicated wheelchair spaces, ensuring ease of access for all visitors. In addition, relaxed screenings with reduced sound levels and adjusted lighting create a sensory-friendly environment, making the cinema accessible to a wider and more diverse audience.

Beyond the auditoriums, the cinema has been designed as a place to spend time, not just pass through. The interiors feature soft lighting, contemporary materials and relaxed lounge areas that encourage visitors to linger before and after screenings. At the heart of this social experience is a cosy café bar serving locally sourced food and drink, including coffees, cakes,
Curated Programming The cinema's programming strategy reflects its identity as a cultural hub rather than just a screening venue. Audiences can expect a curated mix of new releases, family films, cult classics and community screenings. The design language of the cinema reflects a balance between modern aesthetics and informal comfort. Lounge-style spaces, warm lighting and open layouts create an inviting atmosphere that extends beyond the traditional cinema experience. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the space on their own terms, whether arriving early, staying after a film or visiting without a screening in mind.

The opening of the cinema is closely tied to the wider regeneration of Stretford town centre. As part of a larger redevelopment initiative, it contributes to increased footfall, economic activity and community engagement. The ninth edition of BIG CINE EXPO, held on August 18 - 19, 2026 at Chennai Trade Centre, brought together exhibitors, technology companies, studios, distributors, consultants and other stakeholders from across the cinema exhibition ecosystem. The larger venue reflected the event's growing scale, while its two-day programme brought together industry conversations, technology showcases, studio presentations, networking, awards and audience engagement.
Industry, Innovation and Content The first day set the tone with discussions around the changing exhibition landscape, emerging cinema trends and innovations. Panels featuring industry leaders explored what exhibitors need to rethink, how premium experiences are evolving and where the next wave of cinema technology could come from. A key highlight was the Prime Focus Studios presentation, "Ramayana: Exclusive Unseen Glimpses," which offered attendees a special look at the highly anticipated project. The presentation brought a strong content-driven dimension to the Expo, connecting the work of
studios and filmmakers with the exhibition industry that ultimately brings such large-scale productions to audiences.
Technology remained a strong focus, while the ICTA'S Cinema 2030 discussion extended the conversation towards artificial

intelligence and the potential impact of emerging technologies on cinema operations and experiences. The day concluded with the IMAX Big Cine Awards, recognising achievements across multiplexes, single screens, emerging chains, technology adoption and innovation. Networking and booth interactions during Happy Hours provided an informal close to the day's proceedings.
Technology Meets the Audience Day Two shifted the focus towards exhibitors, products and audience engagement. The exhibition floor opened with booth walkthroughs and demonstrations before Barco's "Limitless Possibilities, Unlimited Experiences" presentation explored the possibilities of next-generation cinema technology. The Cracking Audience Engagement panel then addressed one of the exhibition's most pressing questions: what makes audiences choose theatres in an increasingly competitive entertainment environment? Discussions around moviegoing habits, memorable experiences and audience expectations highlighted the need to make cinema visits more
compelling than simply watching a film. The afternoon brought a more interactive atmosphere, with rapidfire questions, movie games and audience interactions, followed by further booth demonstrations and networking.
The Bigger Picture What made BIG CINE EXPO 2026 significant was its ability to bring the many dimensions of exhibition under one roof. From projection, sound and screens to seating, F&B, ticketing, automation and cinema interiors, the event reflected how the modern cinema has evolved into a complete experience ecosystem. The inclusion of the Prime Focus Studios presentation on Ramayana was particularly relevant in this context. It demonstrated the connection between content, technology and exhibition, reminding the industry that spectacular films ultimately require equally compelling theatrical environments.
