Covid cases fall 10% in BC hospitals in one week The number of COVID-19 cases in B.C. hospitals fell by about 10 per cent over the last week, as data shows hospital admissions holding steady. As of Aug. 25, there were 331 positive cases in hospitals, down 35 over last Thursday, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). The number of patients in critical care climbed by seven to 29. The province reports all positive cases in its hospitals, regardless of the reason a person was admitted.

Colleges plan remote courses as student visas get delayed With student visas for Canada getting delayed, the India High Commission in Ottawa has issued an advisory pointing out that some universities have put in place contingency plans for those missing out on the Fall Session starting from next month. New ‘Tomato flu’ discovered in India A virus in India is providing insight into the messy science of uncovering emerging diseases as they happen – particularly in a hypervigilant post-COVID world. The disease of the moment is called ‘tomato flu.’ It’s a virus observed in the south western state of Kerala in India. It causes fevers, rashes, and intense pain in the joints of children it infects. The rash is raised and red, with some pustules getting as large as a cherry tomato – hence the name.

children under five with the disease. “These blisters sort of resemble monkey pox, and sort of resembles hand foot and mouth – it’s a bit of a mixture,” says Australia’s Victoria University immunologist Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, who was one of the researchers on The Lancet paper. “What’s fortunate is it’s hitting kids under the age of about eight … but the kids get over it quite effectively. After about 7-10 days they’re back to normal.”
