Carney says U.S. wants to wipe out Canadian industries or make them subsidiaries U.S. negotiators were pushing in trade talks last month for concessions from Canada that would have caused key sectors like the automotive industry to either become U.S. subsidiaries or be "wiped out" entirely, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday. Until late last month, Canada and the U.S. were negotiating a deal to address trade irritants on both sides of the border. Just ahead of a U.S.-imposed deadline of Aug. 22, Carney suspended those talks and summoned his negotiating team home. "The attitude of the United States in these discussions, and subsequently, has been one that core Canadian industries either would be subsidiaries effectively of the United States industries, or would put in place terms where those industries would be gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out," Carney said in a scrum with reporters outside his office building. Honveer Singh Randhawa and Ricky Bajwa (Navdeep)

By Jasmine Kaur Kochhar: Surrey mayoral candidate Honveer Singh Randhawa says public safety and rebuilding the city's infrastructure would be among his top priorities if elected, as he campaigns alongside council candidate Ricky Bajwa with the Conservative Party of Surrey. Randhawa is a Surrey-raised lawyer and had previously entered provincial politics as the Conservative Party of B.C. candidate in Surrey-Guildford during 2024 election. Bajwa has been a Surrey resident for almost two decades, he’s also an international-level badminton player and coach. He also serves as the director of the non-profit Jeeway Punjab Adabi Sangat Foundation Randhawa argued that over the last 10 years the taxes have doubled but the services have not kept pace. He pointed to swimming lessons as an example; kids have been waiting in line but have been unable to access them. Continued on Page 8...

The Jaswinder Bhalla audiences never knew:

The legacy that extended far beyond comedy By Jasmine Kaur Kochhar: ‘Andittha Ansuniya’ Jaswinder Bhalla a book by Bal Mukund Sharma that explores the lesser-known side of late Dr Jaswinder Bhalla, is set to be released on Aug. 22, a date that also marks the first anniversary of Dr Bhalla's passing. His long-time friend, colleague and college mate of Dr Bhalla, Sharma wanted to document the aspects of Dr Bhalla that the audience did not know about him, his untold side which included his journey, life behind the scenes to the sacrifices he made when it came to his health. “We used to wrap the social issues with a touch of comedy and used to deliver it to the audience which used to be even more effective,” said Sharma. Sharma recalled that in 1992, they had released a film called ‘Massi Nu Tarsange’, which addressed the issue of female foeticide and used cinema as the medium to create awareness amongst the audience.
