Mamdani calls on King Charles to 'return' Koh-i-Noor diamond taken from India
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for King Charles to "return" the prized Koh-i-Noor diamond, which the British Empire took from the Indian subcontinent in the 1800s, on the third day of the monarch's state visit on Wednesday. Before greeting Charles and Queen Camilla at a 9/11 memorial event, Mamdani was asked what he would discuss with the king if he had the chance. "If I was to speak to the king, separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Kohi-Noor diamond," the leftist mayor said, adding that his focus would be honoring those killed in the terror attacks. It's unclear whether Mamdani followed through and brought up the contentious subject with Charles when the two met. The monarch was seen laughing with Mamdani and having a brief conversation after they shook hands. Continued on Page 10...
Criminal networks are taking advantage of “financially vulnerable” young Indian men who are in Canada on study permits to carry out on-the-ground extortion threats and violence in South Asian communities in Surrey and beyond, a new federal report says. A special bulletin from the federal government outlines some of the ways extortionists move their money and confirms the extortion is often carried out by “interconnected” criminal networks rather than isolated individuals. In February, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the federal government was creating a financial crimes agency, within Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis

Surrey gang murder possible retaliation for slaying of UN-aligned trafficker
The murder Tuesday in Surrey of a Brothers Keepers gangster may have been retaliation for the slaying last month of a trafficker linked to the UN gang. And both likely stemmed from the continuing dispute that led to January’s murder of high-profile Brothers Keeper and suspected hitman Naseem Ali Mohammed, sources told Postmedia News on Wednesday. Despite fewer acts of violence in the B.C.wide gang conflict over the last two years, the main groups involved continue to hunt each other, the sources said. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is now in charge of probing the targeted murder that left the 25-year-old Surrey gangster dead. The man was killed inside a silver sedan just before 7 p.m. in the 6800-block of 148th Street. A second victim escaped severe injury. Continued on Page 10...
Gangs using Indian students as ‘money mules’ in extortions in Canada: report Days from being deported, an 11th-hour decision by a Federal Court justice on Friday means that Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, who was found responsible for the fatal Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018, can stay in Canada for a little while longer. Sidhu was behind the wheel of the semi-truck that blew through an oversized stop sign with a flashing yellow light, right into the path of the Saskatchewan junior hockey team’s bus, on April 6, 2018. The collision killed 16 players and staff and injured 13 others. He was scheduled to be deported and board a plane for India early Monday morning. Continued on Page 7...
