LEEDS SUMMER GROUP SHOW
SHOWCASING TALENT FROM LEEDS AND BEYOND
Now in its eleventh year, the Leeds Summer Group Show continues to celebrate artists working across the UK through an open-call exhibition founded by Courtney Spencer in 2015. What began as a modest independent project has developed into a recognised annual platform, supporting both emerging and established artists and reflecting the breadth of contemporary practice.
We’re pleased to return to Leeds Playhouse, a dynamic cultural venue in the heart of the city. Its commitment to creativity, accessibility and community offers a strong context for presenting a wide-ranging and inclusive exhibition.
For the 2026 show, 91 artists submitted over 300 works for consideration. From these, the selection panel chose 69 artworks by 50 artists. The final exhibition brings together a diverse mix of disciplines, materials and perspectives, offering a snapshot of current approaches within contemporary visual art.

Selection panel:
Diane Howse is an artist, curator and founder of Harewood Contemporary. She previously co-founded Project Space Leeds, now Yorkshire Contemporary, and has held roles at organisations including Spacex in Exeter and Watershed in Bristol. Her work focuses on developing ambitious contemporary art programmes in both rural and urban contexts.
Olivia Stross is a trustee of Leeds Art Fund, where she leads on events and engagement. She has a particular interest in widening access to visual arts and supporting artists through audience development, programming and partnerships across the city.
Courtney Spencer is an Australian artist and curator based in Yorkshire. She founded and curates the Leeds Summer Group Show and established The Art Court in 2022 to support artists and collectors across the North. She has worked with organisations including the National Trust, British Library, Leeds Museums & Galleries, Leeds Playhouse and Rushbond.

Alan Pergusey is an artist. Alan regularly exhibits and sells his paintings in the UK and internationally, and he has many works in private collections around the globe. His paintings are an emotional and soulful outlet for ideas about the world, based on his observation and memories. His strange and beautiful paintings give us a hopeful view of the world amidst all it’s chaos. Previously Alan has trained at Eastbourne College of Art, Goldsmiths College of Art, University of London and Jacob Kramer College, Leeds.

ALEXANDRA GLEW
Alexandra Glew is an abstract artist based in Holmfirth. Her practice is rooted in an emotive response to landscape and a strong sense of place, drawing on memories of journeys, shifting terrain and moments of immersion within expansive natural environments. Working across painting and mixed media, her work explores atmosphere, memory and connection. Since graduating from Leeds College of Art in 2007, her practice has developed alongside a career in design and art education. She now lectures in further and higher education while maintaining an active studio practice in West Yorkshire, following completion of an MA in Textile Practices at the University of Huddersfield.

ANDREA THOMA
Andrea Thoma is an artist and researcher working across painting, photography and audio visual installation. Her practice explores perception, duration and the physicality of image making, with a particular focus on movement, colour and space. She approaches painting as a dynamic process, where the material qualities of paint are activated through gesture and repetition. Her abstract works often develop through layered bands, lines and interwoven forms, creating shifting colour relationships and spatial depth. Frequently realised as diptychs or triptychs, her paintings extend across multiple surfaces to explore continuity and variation within a single composition.

ANDREW PICKLES
Andrew Pickles makes narrative paintings that explore and interrogate our precarious and often destructive relationship with nature. His surreal compositions depict symbolic, found and observed objects together with creatures and figures cast into vast empty landscapes. This practice creates startling, bold images that explore both universal and deeply personal themes.

ANGELA BELL
Angela Bell studied printed textile design at Manchester where experimentation with colour, texture and mixed media were encouraged. Since then she has continued to experiment with various media and begins a piece of work by creating an interesting surface on which to work. Angela works in a spontaneous way using sketches and imagination as her inspiration, allowing the work to evolve naturally.

ANNA TURNER
Anna Turner is an abstract artist working across painting, installation and three dimensional forms, with a recent interest in walking as an art practice documented through film. Her work engages with pure abstraction, using repetition, contrast and balance to explore the weight and relationship of colour and form. She creates hard edged paintings rooted in clarity and precision, where shapes are autonomous and not derived from observation or symbolic meaning. Working with plywood panels, she incorporates the material qualities of wood alongside paint and varnish, using structure and surface to reinforce the physical presence of the work.

ANTHONY HOUSMAN
Anthony Housman’s approach to painting can be described as process-led, whereby the physical act of painting, and the relationship between intention and incidence are his primary lines of inquiry. His multi-scale paintings play host to a lexicon of shapes, colours and marks, that recede and amplify, in the pursuit of a charged and active abstract language.

BEN SNOWDEN
Ben Snowden is an artist. Ben’s work explores the human form and nature through colour, line and emotion. The figures and natural forms have a deep rooted sensuality and metaphysical nature which is emphasized with vibrant colour and physical expression. The linear aspect of the work helps carve a pathway into the very soul of the subject by merging personal identity with naturalism. Snowden use’s drawing and painting to create a positive and constructive view of the outside world.

BENJAMIN FRAIS
Benjamin Frais is a contemporary abstract artist working from his studio in North Leeds. His art has been exhibited in local galleries and national art fairs including Harrogate Fusion Art Fair and Art in the Pen’25. His compositions incorporate geometric patterns and linear structure combined with texture and dynamic movement to create harmony, depth and balance within each piece.

BRETT THOMSON
Bret_one is an abstract urban contemporary artist whose practice evolved from a graffiti background into refined gallery-based work. He holds an MA from Leeds Arts University and creates large-scale spray paint and acrylic works exploring the transition from street culture to contemporary art through layered surfaces, expressive mark-making, and recent exhibitions across Yorkshire.

BRISBANE TAYLOR
Brisbane Taylor is an artist whose practice is driven by an intuitive approach to mark making, colour, light and atmosphere. Drawing on the landscape as a point of departure, the work explores mood and sensation rather than direct representation. Process plays a central role, with each piece evolving through a responsive and exploratory way of working, where the act of making is as significant as the final outcome.

CAROLE GRIFFITHS
Carole Griffiths is an artist. Carole is an accomplished sculptor with over 25 years of experience in art education. She studied Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art and completed her MA at Bradford School of Art. Her work has been exhibited across the UK, including London, Sheffield, and York. A member of the Yorkshire Sculptors Group, she contributes to contemporary exhibitions. In 2024, she completed a practice-led PhD at Coventry University exploring the transformation of everyday objects. Her practice begins with drawings and collages, developing into sculptures using clay, stitching, and found materials.

CHRIS EASTHAM
Chris Eastham is a Leeds-born artist who works from her studio just five minutes from the Playhouse. A figurative painter, her work is often semi-autobiographical, depicting people and places rooted in her northern heritage—particularly those connected to Leeds. Alongside her studio practice, Chris regularly teaches portrait courses at Leeds Print Workshop. In 2020, she gained wider recognition as a successful contestant on Sky Television’s Portrait Artist of the Year.

CHRISTINA CATHERINE
Christina Catherine is an artist and oil painter based in Leeds, UK. Trained in Florence, Italy, she specialises in traditional still life, with a focus on fine detail and smaller scale compositions. Her work holds a tension between old and new: deeply rooted in classical technique, but informed by modern themes and contemporary influences. Christina’s paintings are both held in private collections and exhibited widely across the UK. She is a member of Mensa, a Castlefield Gallery Scholar, and a member of the Resilient Artist Cohort in Leeds.

CHRISTINE MEYER-EAGLESTONE
Christine Meyer-Eaglestone studied fine art in Leeds and Manchester (MA Fine Art Sculpture) and after a career in teaching enrolled on a cabinetmaking course which led to her changing her medium to wood veneers and practicing as a contemporary marquetry artist. She creates wall-based artworks and ‘functional pieces of art’ (screens etc). Hand-cutting the veneers allows her to let each composition evolve while instinctively choosing from multiple ‘palettes’ of conventional as well as dyed and ‘reconstructed’ wood veneers - ‘painting in wood’. Structure, enhanced by manipulating line, edge, color and organic pattern is essential to her compositions as is balance and rhythm.

EDD JONES
Edd Jones is an artist whose practice has developed in recent years following a long standing interest in creativity shaped by his experience of living with cerebral palsy. Working primarily in acrylic and oil pastel, his work explores expressive and abstract approaches to mark making. He is particularly interested in the mindful aspects of the creative process and the development of new skills over time. Since 2022, he has been actively building his practice, producing work that embraces gesture, experimentation and a direct, intuitive approach to making.

ELENA PUTLEY
Elena Putley is an artist. Elena is an artist originally from Moldova who has lived and worked in the United Kingdom for over three decades. Her work is shaped by everyday experiences, drawing on current news, encounters, landscapes and changing urban environments. Combining traditional painting methods with processes such as laser-etched drawing on paper, Elena investigates balance between control and spontaneity. Memory, weather and lived experiences inform both the subject matter and atmosphere of her practice. MA at Leeds Metropolitan University (2000–2002). Recent exhibitions: Pastel Society Open Exhibition 2026 at Mall Galleries, London. Her works are held in the collection of the National Art Museum of Moldova and private collections.

ELLIE ANDREWS
Ellie Andrews is an artist whose practice centres on figurative work in charcoal, pastel and oil paint, created from life with sitters of all ages, including children. Her portraits capture likeness and character through loose, expressive marks, often leaving visible the underlying drawing and colour tests. She prefers to work in a single sitting, responding intuitively to time, composition and colour in the moment. When working with children, she invites collaboration, resulting in energetic and unpredictable outcomes. Her work often occupies a space where adult self conscious mark making meets the spontaneity of a child’s gesture, creating a balance between control and play.

HANNAH FERREIRA-ALLEN
Hannah Ferreira-Allen creates paintings that respond to place, in particular the landscape of Trinidad where she was born and lived as a child. Her work investigates her relationship to that landscape, where she occupies the interstice between insider and outsider. The paintings expose her point of view as an interloper of a familiar yet strange land. Hannah is a Bradford-based artist and exhibits nationally. She is an MFA graduate of Oxford University’s Ruskin School of Art.

HANNAH PLATT
Hannah Platt is a visual artist and photographer based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Her work is rooted in place, play and the everyday, often documenting her immediate surroundings with a quick, instinctive eye and a well-worn iPhone. Hannah explores narrative through self-publishing and printed projects, she has released a number of sold-out publications over the past decade, culminating in her photobook Nosey Parker, published by RRB Photobooks with a foreword by Martin Parr. Hannah’s style is unmistakably bold, bright, and full of mischief, often drawing on nostalgia and humour to create work that feels both familiar and surprising.

HELEN DRYDEN
Helen Dryden makes multi layered, vibrant paintings in acrylic on canvas. Inspired by her vivid imagination, she mixes pop culture, cinema, nature and science fiction with an absurdist sense of humour, to create work that features a wide range of subjects. Based at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, Leeds, Helen has been a professional artist for over 25 years. She studied at Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds Arts University. She has exhibited her paintings across the UK. Recently 7 of her paintings were selected by Soho House for their permanent collection at the new Manchester Home, and one her pieces reached the extended longest for the Jackson’s Painting Prize 2026.

JAMIE STEWARD
Jamie Steward is an artist whose portrait practice explores the human subject beyond surface likeness, using painting as a way to slow down and pay attention. Working with a muted, neutral palette, the work focuses on subtle shifts in tone, light and space, allowing images to emerge gradually. Abstract marks sit alongside more considered passages, contributing to a sense of atmosphere and emotional weight. Sensitivity lies at the core of the practice, with an interest in capturing moments of vulnerability, stillness and quiet intensity. JELENA HAVELKA
Jelena Havelka is a Leeds-based abstract artist whose work explores memories and emotions through layered colour, texture and form. Her practice is rooted in the concept of embodiment, translating lived experiences into tactile surfaces and allowing gestures, materials and mark-making with found objects to carry emotional meaning. She works primarily with oil, building textured layers that evoke shifting internal landscapes. While predominantly abstract, her paintings incorporate semi-abstract figurative elements reflecting on the bodies and spaces we inhabit. Jelena has exhibited widely across Yorkshire, recently presenting her first solo exhibition, and her work is held in private collections throughout Europe.

JENNY BEARD
Jenny Beard is a contemporary artist working within abstract painting, exploring an ongoing dialogue between digital aesthetics and traditional methods, where styles and processes push and pull between perfection and error. Driven by the materiality and physicality of the medium, Beard describes themselves as a “painter’s painter.” Reverse entropy is central to the work: reducing elements to their pure essence, translating them digitally, then returning them to canvas to reveal time, scale, and the error of the human hand. Automatic drawing guides composition through instinct, producing unexpected balances, while immersive and intimate displays shape how paintings are experienced.

JO KNIGHT
Jo Knight is an artist. Now based in Hebden Bridge, Jo began to create art in the 1980’s studying in Liverpool and later at Manchester School of Art. Initially concentrating on art photography she returned to painting, exploring a more abstract vision of colour, form and texture to express subjective emotion and ideas of place, home and identity. Working mainly en plein air, she works instinctively to create sketches and her studio practice builds on exploring expressionism using impasto techniques in oil. Her work has been shown at the National Museum of Photography Film and Television, Look Photo International Photography Festival, Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw Wales and Water Street Gallery Todmorden.

Joanna Jowett is an artist, writer and producer based in Leeds. Joanna’s interdisciplinary practice includes the use of print, photography, performance, writing, and publishing to explore the details of personal and local experiences, often addressing themes of motherhood, grief, identity, mental health, nature, and the environment. Her work and research aim to question the power dynamics between the written and the visual, the published/unpublished, heard/unheard, and the edges of what is public/private, exploring the soft and vulnerable parts of being human.

Joanne Tinker transforms ordinary objects into something precious, something special. Repetition, multiples and miniatures are a constant. These works are made using the tiny scraps of chocolate foils papers. Nothing is thrown away. Joanne’s work is in many private collections including the New York Museum of Art & Design, London Science Museum and The White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney. Joanne has exhibited all over the world and runs her own practise and art gallery in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

JONATHAN SMITH
Jonathan Smith sees painting as a meditative process that allows him to focus, through the process of painting, on beauty within the natural world. Working exclusively in oil, he seeks out forms and structures in nature that strike him as beautiful and attempts to convey these notions of beauty to the observer. In an increasingly ugly world, this search for beauty and, ultimately, truth is ever more important. Jonathan mediates these ideas through the classical art tradition of the Romantic Period, when beauty through painting became ever more important as the Industrial Revolution wrenched people away from the land.

Judy Sale is an artist. Is a British professional artist born and brought up in the USA before renouncing her US citizenship in 2023. She has lived in Haworth, West Yorkshire for over 15 years and before that, lived in 8 different countries and travelled to many more. Julia Poulton is an abstract oil painter based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Her practice explores emotional connection through intuitive mark-making, guided by instinct rather than intention. Working with rich colour and texture, she builds each painting in layers using fluid and gestural brush-marks, allowing time for the paint to settle and evolve. This process creates a sense of depth, where traces of earlier marks remain visible beneath the surface. KIRA MCLENNON
Kira McLennon is an artist working primarily with painting and drawing, exploring the relationship between landscape, abstraction, and memory. LISA ROBINSON
Lisa Robinson is a contemporary painter whose practice explores the physical process of painting. Drawing on her observations of daily life; from interiors and cinematic imagery to elements of the landscape, she creates compositions that translate the familiar into spaces of abstraction. She studied at Manchester School of Art and has completed a year on the Turps Correspondence Course. Her work has been exhibited nationally and has been shortlisted for the New Light Art Prize, the ING Discerning Eye Prize, Lido Open and the OPO Open. She currently works from her studio at Westgate Studios in Wakefield.

LOUISE VENTRIS
Louise Ventris is a Yorkshire based artist whose painting practice explores urban townscapes. Drawing inspiration from moments of ‘dead time’, such as being caught in traffic or moving through gridlock, she observes and captures the atmosphere of these transient situations. Using the journey as a recurring motif, her work often features vehicles navigating the city, reflecting a sense of isolation and solitude alongside the pressures of movement and time. Through these compositions, she considers the tension between stillness and motion, and the wider complexities of contemporary life shaped by speed and acceleration.

MATTHEW THOMPSON
Matthew Thompson is a visual artist based in Manchester, England. Much of his work is focused on the urban environment and the experience of living in it. He combines the traditional aspects of painting and drawing to create expressive and contemporary final pieces. Working in mixed media of acrylic and emulsion paint, he merges this with drawing with charcoal, chalks and pastels. He is diagnosed with ADHD and this is reflected in his practice, working quickly and instinctively in a way that reflects the energy, complexity and chaotic nature of the urban environment. His work is collected in the UK as well as internationally.

PATRICK O’DONNELL
Patrick O’Donnell is an artist and curator based at Phoenix Art Space, Brighton. He graduated in 1997 from Southampton Institute with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. His practice explores the transition between real and constructed space, focusing on the relationships between colour, line and edge, and how these elements meet, merge and dissolve. Working in a reductive, non figurative manner, he draws on a range of influences to develop compositions grounded in simple formal structures. His work spans painting, printmaking and site specific projects, reflecting an ongoing interest in material, process and spatial perception.

Rachel Mills is a contemporary Yorkshire artist known for atmospheric landscape paintings inspired by the quiet beauty of the British countryside. REBECCA O’HOOLEY
Rebecca O’Hooley is an oil painter based in Leeds. Her practice considers landscape as a metaphor through which to explore themes of care, attention and the often unseen. Her paintings evoke interior and uncertain spaces, using mark making to render visible what is typically overlooked. Surfaces are repeatedly scraped back and reworked, resulting in compositions that resist immediate interpretation. While rooted in personal experience, her work does not seek to communicate a fixed narrative, instead inviting viewers to find their own point of connection within the image.

RICHARD BAKER
Richard Baker (b. 1971) lives and works in Leeds. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Leeds Metropolitan University and an MA in Creative Practice from Leeds Arts University. His modestly scaled oil paintings depicting isolated objects of furniture and clothing have been exhibited worldwide. He won the Hix Award, 2019 and was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize, 2020, and was runner up in the LCA Prize, 2019. He was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition in 2018. His work is included in the Priseman-Seabrook collection of 21st Century British Painting.

ROY BEST
Roy Best is a Leeds-based visual artist who graduated in Fine Art in Newcastle in the 1970s and who both taught art and worked as a freelance illustrator before life took him in a different direction. Only resuming his art practice in 2021 after a 40 year long hiatus, his work today is mostly figurative and is characterised by a distinctive densely drawn mark-making style. He has exhibited widely in group and selective open shows in London and across the North, picking up s number of art prizes along the way and has had three solo shows over the past two years.

SIMON LEWIS
Simon Lewis is an illustrator and printmaker based in Leeds. His work combines highly detailed black and white drawings with colourful screenprints and smaller, textural etchings. Focusing primarily on urban landscapes, he depicts architecture and streetscapes across Yorkshire, with recurring themes including street life, music, industrial heritage and traces of faded grandeur. He is particularly interested in overlooked details such as shopfronts, signage and everyday buildings, capturing the character and individuality of place. Over the past two decades, he has exhibited widely in galleries, cafes and alternative spaces, developing a sustained practice rooted in observation and documentation.

STEVEN HEELHAM
Steven Heelham is an artist based in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Working under the name Ladysheep, his practice draws on direct observation, memory and imagination. His work explores the everyday and the overlooked, finding humour and quiet absurdity in people and place. Influenced by artists including L. S. Lowry, Eileen Coop, Egon Schiele and Rose Wylie, his drawings and paintings balance immediacy with a distinctive, expressive line. Heelham’s work invites moments of reflection, offering viewers a chance to pause, look closely and, at times, smile.

Susan Thompson (BA Hons Fine Art, Oxford Brookes University, 2014) is an abstract painter whose work is deeply informed by the natural world. ZOE BOSWELL
Zoe Boswell is a Leeds based artist working with contemporary embroidery as a fine art practice. Her work transforms everyday materials, including vintage photographs and postcards, into alternative surfaces for stitching. Through this process, she disrupts the fixed narratives these objects suggest, reworking fragments of memory to create new visual interpretations. While rooted in traditional hand embroidery, her practice challenges the medium’s historical associations through the use of unconventional methods and materials. ZOE MAXWELL
Zoe Maxwell’s practice explores how place and memory can detach from accuracy and orientation. Her paintings depict shared public and domestic spaces, commonplaces that are often left out of the sequence of recollection.
