Hiking safety tips for summer excursions into the Blue Ridge Mountains

A hiker was injured falling from the last ladder leading up to Grandfather Mountain’s McRae Peak March 22. Due to the severity of the injury, the Linville-Central Rescue Squad and North Carolina Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team were called to launch a rescue operation to administer aid and get the hiker off the mountain safely. The rescue teams were able to coordinate NCHART’s airlift from the peak of Grandfather Mountain and successfully transferred the hiker to a medical facility for further treatment.

Grandfather Mountain is among the highest peaks on the East Coast and is a popular outdoor destination in the High Country. The mountain’s cultural ubiquity and tourist activities, including its museum and animal habitats, mask the danger of the strenuous trails lying

just beyond the bear caves. Although the High Country’s trails may be difficult, knowing the right precautions and procedures before a trip can keep hikers from danger in an unpredictable landscape.

Richard Schaffer is the K-9 search and rescue group leader for the LinvilleCentral Rescue Squad and a professor emeritus of business law at App State.

In his 25 years of experience with wilderness rescue teams in Western North Carolina, he has seen the hazards these mountains carry, even for experienced hikers.

“The big picture is to not underestimate these mountains if you’re not familiar with them,” Schaffer said.

Schaffer’s time on the rescue squad has varied from basic extractions on foot to complex, time-sensitive air operations.

One of his recent rescue missions involved helping a dehydrated hiker who was suffering from severe leg cramps that made it impossible for them to continue any further on their own.

“We had to go in, get them rehydrated and help them down the mountain,” Schaffer said. “That was really simple, but it still took four to five hours.”

Schaffer said hydration is critical, especially on longer hikes. He recommends bringing two to three liters of water on your person, as well as a high-quality filter that can be used to drink from natural water sources to keep hydrated in a pinch. He uses a reusable filter that can be attached to a plastic water bottle.

The right gear for the trip is also important. Schaffer said a rain jacket and fleece can protect from hypothermia during sudden weather changes, which can occur in temperatures as high as 60 degrees Fahrenheit in certain conditions. Above-the-ankle footwear, batteries and a flashlight or headlamp are also vital.

“I ask hikers to bring two flashlights because they don’t know when they’ll get back,” Schaffer said.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, many forests were damaged or destroyed. Even as the two-year anniversary approaches, Schaffer said the trails “are no longer what they used to be or where they used to be.”

“Be aware that the trails you once knew may not be there,” Schaffer said. “It can be disorienting.”

Julie Mullis, an interpretive park ranger and educator at App State and Lees-McRae College who works on the Blue Ridge Parkway, notes the variable elevations of the Blue Ridge’s valleys, peaks, creek crossings and lack of established trails as hazards. Mullis also faces thick rhododendron patches on trails.

“It pulls you further and further until you get out, and you don’t know where you are anymore,” Mullis said.

Rose Trew, a natural resource management specialist for the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation, knows the mountain better than most. Trew grew up in Foscoe, “in the shadow of Grandfather,” and later

moved to Boone, attending App State. Now working at Grandfather Mountain, she manages trail maintenance; ecological research; invasive and endangered species; trail sweeps; and search and rescue.

“It’s hard to pass up an opportunity to play outside for a living,” Trew said.

Before embarking on one of Grandfather Mountain’s trails, Trew urges hikers to fill out a permit at the trailhead so rescuers can keep track of who is on the mountain. Trew also recommends packing extra snacks, expecting sudden weather changes and taking “more time than you think you need” on a trail to avoid racing the park’s closure at sunset.

“These trails can be gnarly,” Trew said. “Sometimes you don’t know what you’re in for until you’re in the thick of it.”

In her time working at Grandfather Mountain, Trew has seen visitors come from across the country. These visitors sometimes make a spontaneous decision to take on one of Grandfather Mountain’s strenuous trails without the right preparation. When this happens, Trew said it’s important to not push oneself too hard.

“It’s a tough call to call off a hike after driving two hours up to Avery

County,” Trew said. “But you have to listen to your body.”

Although Mullis believes preparation is vital, she said one of the keys to navigating trails in the Blue Ridge is to embrace uncertainty.

“Always think before you put your foot down,” Mullis said. “You never know what could happen next.”

Recognizing App State’s high-achieving

For some, college is a stepping stone toward the rest of their lives. For others, it is a time of boundless opportunity for growth and exploration. A select few fully capitalize on this opportunity and walk away with the awards to show for it — a vast collection of cords to showcase at graduation.

David Itson is a senior accounting major and May 2026 graduate who has accumulated seven cords.

Itson will receive cords from The Brothers Initiative, the Black Student Association, Student Government Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and for being a tour guide and resident assistant for the university.

“Each cord made me into the person that I am today,” he said.

Itson was a recipient of the Fleming Scholarship and a member of the Black Male Excellence Initiative, a residential learning community where he lived during his freshman year. Later, in his sophomore year, he began interning at the BSA.

His junior year, he became the head of community outreach for BSA, a role created just for him. In this role, he created events for the club. By the end of the year, he was offered the president

position, which he declined in favor of becoming vice president and treasurer.

It was during this time that the university experienced cuts to diversity, equity and inclusion, and the Black Male Excellence Initiative was taken away.

“I had a lot of support as a Black student my freshman year, but I slowly started seeing those supports taken away,” he said.

Seeing a need for that support, Itson and his peers created The Brothers Initiative, a mental health and student empowerment organization for men of color, and he came on as the organization’s president.

“We just simply come together, talk s---, say our woes of life and eat,” he said. “I couldn’t tell you how many times people have came and expressed themselves fully and left feeling better.”

His senior year, he joined SGA as the director of campus resources. There, he helped raise funds for the wellness center, promoted Black History Month and raised awareness for health protocols on campus. He also joined Alpha Phi Alpha as the chaplain, treasurer and social media specialist.

During all this, Itson said he felt stretched thin.

“Imagine if I took all that energy and put it in one thing, how amazing that one thing could have been,” he said. “Don’t

Instead, he encourages others to be leaders. He said the experience helped shape him into who he is.

“This has taught me what my career and my future is going to look like,” he said.

This summer, Itson will intern for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and has aspirations of getting his doctorate and becoming a provost or president of a university.

Another May 2026 graduate with both high achievements and aspirations is Chloe Lemos, a senior criminal justice major who has accumulated five graduation cords.

Lemos received cords from graduating as a second lieutenant in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, achieving magna cum laude, being a firstgeneration student and from being part of the Scabbard and Blade honor society and the National Society of Pershing Rifles.

Lemos said she does not consider herself to be a cord collector. Rather, her motivation was job security after college.

“I got my pick of the litter,” she said.

This summer, she will take part in the Logistics Basic Officer Leadership Course at the Army Sustainment University in Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia. In December, she will go to Fort Carson, Colorado, where she will be stationed for three years.

She has aspirations to work for either the Naval Criminal Investigative Service or the FBI.

ROTC also served as a source of community for her, which often lightened the load of her work.

“There definitely have been some days where it’s like, ‘Why am I doing this?’” she said. “But having a support system has definitely helped out a lot.”

Through ROTC, Lemos met Captain Sam Snelson, who became a role model for her. Snelson was the first female instructor she had in the program, and

commander for the National Society of Pershing Rifles, a drill ceremonies club, where she performed with the color guard at football games, and as the treasurer for Scabbard and Blade, a community service club.

She said she put a lot of effort into the organizations and had a lot of learning experiences through them.

“I don’t think I would ever change anything from the four years I’ve been here,” Lemos said.

Seniors graduate with legacies as club founders

As another year wraps up and seniors prepare to graduate, some are leaving behind a club they founded.

The Appalachian Society for Communication Studies was founded by Colton McNeill in 2025. As a public relations major, McNeill found there were few places for students in the Department of Communication outside of groups centered around digital journalism or electronic media and broadcasting, leaving out communication studies, public relations and advertising majors.

Although the club is open to every major, as McNeill believes communication is an important skill that everyone should have, he said its target demographic is communication students.

Meetings are hosted by McNeill and sometimes by one of three vice presidents. In the past, they have hosted speakers such as Melanie Sleime, the assistant vice president of human resources at Iredell Health System, and Amaadi Yeboah, an App State alum and executive administrative assistant at Nurturing Nest Residential Home.

Other ASCS meetings center on fun events or community building. Recently, the club announced the president for 2026-27: junior public relations major Camille Sudol.

McNeill acted as a mentor toward Sudol, working closely this past semester to prepare her for her upcoming role. He did so by involving her in emails sent to the department and to advisors. He also talked about specific situations that he has gone through and asked what she would do differently compared to what he did in the past.

“I don’t want you to continue doing something only because I did it in the past. It’s stupid to continue doing it the same I do it if it’ll get you the same result,” McNeill said.

In the job search process, McNeill said it’s impressive to be able to tell a recruiter he put “all the blood, sweat and tears” into founding a club.

“It just shows overall that you clearly have the organizational skills at the very least,” McNeill said.

Although she does not graduate until the fall semester, Valeria Sierra Rey, a senior theatre arts major, will be leaving behind the App State Voice Acting Club, which was founded in 2025.

Sierra Rey started voice acting in high school and said dealing with performance anxiety is why she decided to create the club.

“Knowing that there’s other people who like or want to act but are kind of

scared to be on a stage, I kind of decided to make the Voice Acting Club to be a space for those who want to explore the arts,” Sierra Rey said.

The App State Voice Acting Club meets every two weeks. During the club’s first semester, meetings consisted of workshops where Sierra Rey would talk to people about the basics of voiceover work.

Since discovering the audio recording room in the lower level of Belk Library and Information Commons, Sierra Rey reserves this space so her club can do more hands-on activities.

Sierra Rey said some of the inspiration for the club’s meetings comes from her classes.

For one of their meetings, club members worked on their accents by recording the FitnessGram Pacer Test in different accents, like Russian, British, French and even a Brooklyn accent.

“I took a class called advanced voice, and a portion of that class we learned about accents,” Sierra Rey said. “And so I showed the paperwork that I was given by my professor and showed them how to do it.”

Due to Sierra Rey being in a timedemanding major, she says that it can be a bit hectic, but she manages her time well.

She says she does not stress over the club. People are always welcome to come to meetings if they can, but it is not a requirement. She also tries to be flexible with the club’s schedule by working with its members and her executive team.

Former students turned professors: App State alums reflect on their return to the High Country
Professor and App State alumn Ralph Lentz sits in front of the bookshelf in his office in Anne Belk Hall on April 13.

During fall break of 1999, Ralph Lentz was a new professor at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. One Saturday night, he received a call from Michael Wade, his former history professor at App State. Wade said he was retiring from the university and looking for someone to fill his position.

“I was extremely happy — and then terrified because I was only in my second semester teaching, and I was taking over for a very popular professor,” Ralph Lentz said.

Born and raised in Watauga County, Ralph Lentz is a history professor and alum of App State. His family’s roots run back in the High Country for three centuries with stories about life in the Appalachian Mountains. When the time came, there was no question where he would attend college.

Inspired by his uncle, Homer Carter Lentz, who served in World War II, Ralph Lentz chose to devote his career to researching history, growing his connection to and understanding of the past. His uncle attended App State on the GI Bill, which aimed to ease veterans back into civilian life by providing aid for education, insurance and loans. He earned his master’s degree from App State in 1998 and taught high school history in Watauga County for many years.

Ralph Lentz said he got to experience the “golden age” of App State. He recalled speaking with John E. Thomas and Francis Borkowski, both former chancellors of the university. The return to campus didn’t come without challenges. Ralph Lentz said it took him almost 10 years before he became comfortable.

This October will mark 28 years since Ralph Lentz started teaching. The importance of sharing new research with his students and fostering partnerships is what he thinks college is supposed to be about.

“A teacher is a professional learner, and that’s the thing I love most about it is that I get paid to read, to think, to contemplate history and then share that with other people,” Ralph Lentz said.

Another professor who felt a connection with Boone and the surrounding region is Liz Kunkel. She teaches Spanish at App State and grew up down the mountain in Hickory. As a kid, Kunkel never dreamed she’d be a teacher because of her passion for healthcare.

“A teacher is a professional learner, and that’s the thing I love most about it is that I get paid to read, to think, to contemplate history and then share that with other people.”
- Ralph Lentz

During her senior year, a mentor and former professor, Beverly Moser, encouraged her to continue her education with a master’s degree in Spanish. Kunkel said the practice, teaching opportunities and classes with Moser helped her realize her enjoyment of teaching.

“I am very fortunate to have this mentor in my life because that’s what got me to where I am today,” Kunkel said.

After Kunkel finished her master’s program, App State offered her a position as an adjunct professor. She taught until 2019, when an opportunity to teach English in Spain arose. After a high school trip, Kunkel realized that she always wanted to go back to immerse herself in the culture and gain confidence in her fluency.

“When you’re out of school, it’s a lot harder to go abroad, and so I try to encourage my students to go abroad while you have all these programs and resources pushing you to do it,” Kunkel said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kunkel got an email from Moser about an open teaching position. Because of her love for the area, Kunkel applied for it, was hired and came back to Boone in July 2020.

After coming back, she realized her love for healthcare still lingered. She and Adrienne Erazo, an associate professor of Spanish, developed a minor in Spanish for health professions.

“I have the privilege to be able to teach pre-nursing, pre-med and other students Spanish that is going to increase their cultural awareness and intercultural competencies,” Kunkel said.

Next semester, Kunkel will offer a fundamental Spanish class designed for students going into healthcare fields with no prior knowledge of Spanish. This class is set up to help ease the language barrier within hospitals.

Taylor Dills is also a professor at App State who graduated from the same institution that she now teaches at. Having grown up in Sylva, Dills debated going to the nearby Western Carolina University, but she ultimately decided to leave her hometown. Originally choosing to major in journalism, Dills changed her

major to pursue creative writing full time and worked for Her Campus.

“That was really transformative for me, just being comfortable enough to do that. That’s translated to my adult life and helped me grow in a lot of ways,” Dills said.

She graduated in 2017 and took some time off to earn her master’s degree in screenwriting before moving to New York City. During her time there, she worked for A&E Networks and Apple TV on shows like “Sesame Street,” “Live PD” and “You.”

While in New York, Dills felt homesick for Appalachia, an emotion she said she didn’t expect since she always wanted to move to the city.

By the time the pandemic hit, both her Apple TV contract and apartment lease were ending. Dills decided to move back to North Carolina to teach in Charlotte for a few years before applying to a position at App State. Helping to revitalize the screenwriting program, she proposed an advanced screenwriting class that ultimately gained student interest.

For Dills, the connection between her and the students is the most rewarding aspect of teaching. She loves to see students break out of their shells and become confident as they progress in their writing.

“Oftentimes, this is brand new for them, and it’s really fun to see them learning about it, getting excited about it and just seeing their eagerness to want to learn more,” Dills said.

Holmes Convocation Center creates a ‘Holme’ for arts, entertainment in Boone

For many years, Boone has been well known for its music scene.

From bluegrass legend Doc Watson to High-Country-formed Rainbow Kitten Surprise, music has always been an important staple for the town. With this comes the absolute cruciality of a versatile venue for all kinds of entertainment.

In 2020, App State Athletics invited Luke Combs to perform at Holmes Convocation Center, beginning a new entertainment-focused chapter for the department. The Convocation Center has also been used for years as a place for academic events such as career fairs, commencements and art showcases. This venue has played a role in the merging of the Athletics Department and the Department of Art.

Doug Gillin is the director of athletics at App State and emphasized the department’s commitment to prioritizing collaboration across the university.

“We want to collaborate with anybody and everybody whenever it makes sense,” Gillin said. “Any partnerships that we can work together on, we want to, you know, do a lot of different things with a lot of different departments.”

According to Gillin, one of the missions of the department is to have more events on campus catering to both students and locals. The department wants to foster “vibrant events on campus that our students can engage in,” Gillin said.

Gillin encouraged the utilization of facilities that wouldn’t typically be in

use in order to provide both sports and entertainment to the community and student population.

While the department has been introducing bigger artists to the venue over the last few years, including the recent Young the Giant concert, Gillin said the team is flexible with accommodating academic-centered events.

“There’s career fairs; there’s the fashion show; there’s other events in the Holmes Center that are academicfocused. We have to work around those because we have athletics and we have academics in the Holmes Center first and foremost,” Gillin said.

The Department of Applied Design put on the 2026 Apparel Design and Merchandising Showcase on April 25 under the supervision of Anthony Wilson, the ADM Showcase faculty director. This annual event has been held in the Convocation Center for a couple of years, giving the program a large space to allow approximately 20 to 25 students to showcase their work from the semester.

Claire Kusse, a senior apparel design and merchandising major, participated in this year’s show after being a part of last year’s pre-show. The show consists of three looks from each student designer, complete with live music and judges scoring the looks. It is a culmination of everything the seniors have been working toward during their four years at App State.

“If we didn’t have the show, we wouldn’t be showing anybody our looks, and I think it is important for our

classmates to see it and our families and everybody else that ends up going,” Kusse said.

After having a conversation with Wilson about the showcase, Kusse noted the impact of it being held in the Convocation Center.

“He was the one that made the jump from a smaller venue elsewhere, not on campus, to bringing it to being on campus,” Kusse said.

She shared Wilson’s experience as a student who didn’t have the opportunity to participate in the kind of showcase they’re able to put on now.

The Convocation Center has offered more space to aid the show’s production, as well as additional seats for audience members, contributing more exposure to what some see as otherwise underappreciated departments, such as the arts.

“It’s really great to see it ‘cause we are still a small department; like, there’s not that many of us, and it’s nice to see more faces and more people into the same kind of thing I’m into,” Kusse said.

When it comes to the athletics side of things, Gillin highlighted the financial benefits.

“We want our facilities, if they’re not being used, then to use them to grow revenue,” Gillin said.

Events will continue to take place at the Convocation Center this upcoming summer. On June 18, the eve of Boonerang Music and Arts Festival, headliner Niko Moon will take to the stage with support from local musicians Adam Church and Midlife Trip.

Fast fashion: ‘We

don’t have to see the consequences’

Countries like Ghana and Chile are ultimately forced to receive the United States’ textile waste when recycling companies take discarded clothing from various producers. Though consumers are often under the impression that the clothing will be repurposed and recycled responsibly, this is often not the case.

According to the Boston University School of Public Health, 66% of unsellable clothes are landfilled, while 19% are burned. Those who live in countries with textile landfills or open-air dumps must directly face the aftermath of fast fashion with severely contaminated water, soil and air, as well as microplastic pollution.

“We don’t have to see the consequences, right?” Karstrom said.

Megan Prosser, a senior sustainable development major, emphasized the importance of mending your own clothing to combat the unsustainable effects of fast fashion.

Prosser said university resources like the Makerspace are great ways to learn skills such as sewing, upcycling and mending to repurpose clothing you would typically throw out.

“The Makerspace can really flush out some student employee positions that are turning out workshops and engaging students on different ideas around extending, you know, the life of the things that they own,” Karstrom said.

Another on-campus resource is the Free Store in the Office of Sustainability, located in the lower level of East Hall, which provides students with an eclectic array of clothing items at no cost in the hopes of promoting textile conservation.

Karstrom said the free store constantly receives a plethora of fabric that students can use to adapt or create their own items as well.

“Sustainability is a journey, right?” Karstrom said. “We’re always growing; you just gotta start.”

Students around App State’s campus can be found donning vintage clothing from decades before their time, with certain articles being specially crafted to have an extended lifespan. Decades from now, our presently-made clothes will be found in a landfill.

Fast fashion is the rapid manufacturing of clothing to match current trends in an ever-changing market. Debra Harmon, the shop manager for Ram’s Rack Thrift Shop, said she sees a plethora of fast fashion being donated to them.

“We do see quite a bit of the fast fashion in here. You get the Shein brands and, you know, the disposable clothes,” Harmon said. “They’re not meant to last.”

Harmon said the store’s most popular items are always the vintage pieces, as they are higher quality choices over most modern clothing brands.

“Something that’s been around since the ‘70s is very sustainable, so everybody gets more excited over that donation,” Harmon said.

Lanie Karstrom, the sustainability outreach director at App State, said the waste that fast fashion manufacturing practices produce is extremely unsustainable.

The director of Ram’s Rack, Kelly Barefoot, said all of their unsellable donations are packaged and redistributed to Value Clothing, Inc. — a recycling company. This allows the items to be repurposed and prevents them from ending up in a landfill.

Barefoot said the fibers from shirts can be recycled for medical use, and Harmon said the bottoms of tennis shoes can be ground up and used to make asphalt.

Simple recycling practices being put in place for companies like these are an effective way to address overconsumption and the fast fashion industry — even when it feels like an overwhelming issue.

“You just kind of have this uncontrollable, fast-growing, easily accessible process that is creating these environmental and social externalities that are not being accounted for,” Karstrom said.

Karstrom said fast fashion expanding so rapidly is a symptom of a larger issue: consumerism.

“There are lots and lots of areas where consumerism is the problem, and that really stems back to the capitalist boundaries and whether or not we have them,” Karstrom said. “If you’re always raising the bar, it’s going to require more and more resources.”

“Learning how to mend clothing is a really awesome skill that a lot of people don’t have,” Prosser said. “I think the last time I used a sewing machine was probably in, like, home ec in middle school.”

“We have so much stuff; we don’t know what to do with it,” Karstrom said. “It’s piling up in our landfills, it’s piling up on the sides of the roads, it’s piling up in people’s homes, and we don’t know what to do with it.”

Fast fashion is an issue that runs deeper than most people think, Karstrom said, as most of the environmental damage is not seen immediately by consumers.

Looking forward by looking back: Boone’s historic music scene

While the phrase “play me some mountain music” can be heard in Kidd Brewer Stadium every game day, the genre itself can be hard to define.

Originating from folk music and emerging with jam-centered improvisations, bluegrass is often found at the center of Boone’s “mountain music.” Seen downtown, visual landmarks like a mural and bronze statue attribute much of the genre’s local presence to certain guitarists from Deep Gap.

Trailing the American folk revival, Doc Watson began gaining significant popularity as a performer in Western North Carolina in the ‘50s.

Gary Boye, the director of the Erneston Music Library, has worked at App State since 2000 and refers to Watson as a “godfather of everything local.”

“The attraction with Doc Watson is that he was able to represent this area outside of this area,” Boye said. “And it’s interesting ‘cause, even after he was discovered in the 1960s, it

took a while for people to really realize how big a name he was around here.”

From an Appalachian perspective, bluegrass can feel closer to jazz than old-time music, something Watson often displayed.

“And to me, that’s a characteristic of Appalachian music is that they take lots of different types of music and combine them,” Boye said.

Boye conveniently arrived in town around the time Watson discovered the Old Crow Medicine Show. Busking outside

of Mast General Store and Boone Drug, the group’s old-time instrumentation was fresh with new interpretations.

Since being discovered, Old Crow Medicine Show has gone on to win multiple Grammy Awards, and the group’s song “Wagon Wheel” can still be heard regularly in the High Country.

The band’s notable ability to teeter between musical influences without listeners recognizing it sets it apart from other groups, something Boye notices artists continuing to do.

“Each year I’ll find somebody who’s probably early 20s or something like that, and they’ve got this thing where they combine unique influences into their own thing, and it’s, you know, suddenly there’s a new person,” Boye said. This array of inspirations often blurs the lines between genres, and artists in Boone have been doing it for decades. Through punk, country, rock and the blues, there’s often a crowd eager to listen, even if they can’t label what they’re hearing.

ARTS & CULTURE

One of the more memorable names to come out of Boone in recent years is country music star Luke Combs.

In an interview with Time Magazine on April 15, Combs addressed his attempts to adhere to his genre’s roots while mixing in contemporary inspirations. He went on to say the modern country scene — thanks to the recent trend of genre-bending — is bound to have something for everyone, even those who say they don’t like country.

“There’s some version of it that you like,” Combs said in the interview. “You just haven’t found that one yet.”

Combs’ attitude of sonic flexibility is a direct result of the folk and bluegrass environment surrounding his early career. This influence affects genres beyond country as well, spreading to the post-punk revival of the early 2000s, which has largely influenced the current indie-rock scene.

Kole Pjetraj, a guitarist in the electric jam band Satellite Dog, has been living in Boone while on a gap year from his studies of computer engineering at North Carolina State University. Similar to Boye, Pjetraj said the folk and bluegrass roots often blend with other genres, something Pjetraj greatly attributes to student musicians.

“I think that music here in Boone has a distinct sound that pulls from many genres, and I think that the distinctiveness stems from both the regional musical culture of the Appalachian high country and the unique blend of artists that Boone attracts from all over the country,” Pjetraj wrote in an email.

The similarities between Boone’s stylistic roots and its contemporary counterparts often occupy the same spaces, which Pjetraj said encourages them to interact.

“Very often you’ll find bluegrass and folk bands sharing a bill with psych rock, fusion, or jam bands in ways that I find happens less often in other places,” Pjetraj wrote.

While access to musical influence has grown exponentially in the digital streaming age, Pjetraj said Boone’s current scene still remembers its roots and draws inspiration from its long musical tradition.

“Although the style and genre of a legend like Doc Watson is very different from my own, he is at the top of my list of inspirations and it is very significant to be able to play music so near to his birthplace,” Pjetraj wrote.

Regardless of genre, this appreciation flows through every note played in Boone, loosely defined as “mountain music.” App State even remembers its musical heritage with IG Greer Hall and the Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies — both named after historic folklorists.

“The more you learn about your local history, the more you appreciate the changes that have gone on and the things that have happened,” Boye said.

Freshman kicker Dominic De Freitas will advance his kicking career at the University of North Texas. De Freitas made 77.8% of his field goals on the season while kicking 100% from extra point territory. De Freitas successfully made his longest field goal of the season from 49 yards against Oregon State University. During his season, he averaged 7.4 points per game for the Mountaineers, tallying 96 points total.

OUTGOING TRANSFERS

Dozier had a breakout game on Oct. 4 against Oregon State University, tallying 140 receiving yards and his longest reception of the season at 68 yards. His offensive abilities were a highlight this past season, with Dozier averaging 22.4 yards per catch.

JJ KOHL

AJ SWANN

The redshirt junior three-star quarterback is taking his talents to Mississippi State University, a member of the Southeastern Conference, after being injured in the final game of his only season at App State. During his time with the Mountaineers, he played in 7 games and totalled 10 touchdowns. Swann’s breakout game was the season opener against UNC-Charlotte, where he passed for 368 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Mississippi State will be Swann’s third SEC university, as he was a quarterback at Louisiana State University and Vanderbilt University.

His breakout game came in the third matchup of the season, where he had 309 passing yards in a 41-20 victory over Georgia State University. Although Kohl was originally positioned as the backup quarterback to Swann, he made a significant impact on the offense.

Redshirt sophomore three-star defensive back Zyeir Gamble has committed to East Carolina University after two seasons with the Mountaineers. His defensive ability on the field made him a fan favorite as he tallied 76 tackles from 12 games, 37 of them solo. Gamble had a career-high 13 tackles against conference rival Old Dominion University. Gamble will face the new Black and Gold roster when the Pirates play App State Sept. 12.

Makayla McClain and her record-shattering 2026

Senior infielder Makayla McClain dug into the righthanded batter’s box April 2 for her first plate appearance of the series against Marshall University. On the first pitch she swung at, she smashed a homer over the left center field wall.

It was her 18th of the season, which broke the program record for the most home runs in a season — with 16 games still left on the regular season schedule.

“When they see Mak rise to the challenge or fight through it, it sends a different message to the team — that we can do it,” head coach Whitney Jones said.

McClain spent her first two years at Campbell University before transferring to App State at the end of her sophomore season.

“When I got to App State, I immediately knew that this was gonna be my home for the next few years, and I’ve loved every minute of it,” McClain said.

In her junior season, McClain earned All-Sun Belt first team honors with a 1.221 on-base plus slugging rate and 14 home runs in 45 games, a total she equaled in 28 games in her senior year. On May 3, 2025, she hit for the cycle, becoming the first Mountaineer to do so.

On top of owning the singleseason home run record, she broke the single-season runs record.

“It means a lot, but there’s been a lot of hard work that’s been put into it,” McClain said. “It’s just been a great experience, and I’m glad to have the people I do around me to experience it with me.”

Junior infielder Grace Barrett is McClain’s middle infield duo, also named to the All-Sun Belt first team. Barrett has had a career-best season as well, trailing McClain for the team lead in batting average, hits, OPS, RBIs and runs scored.

“I love how we feed off of each other,” Barrett said. “I am fueled by her, watching her perform. I just love the way that we come together and click in that aspect.”

A lot of second basemen and shortstops have chemistry that other positions on the field don’t, and McClain and Barrett are no different.

“Mak is one of the most competitive people I’ve ever known, and I see a lot of myself in her,” Barrett said. “Things that she says or how she reacts to certain things, I think we’re very similar in some of those ways.”

Coach Jones and McClain arrived in Boone around the same time, and Jones athleticism and swing.

“I didn’t see Mak before college, but I did watch film on her freshman year, and there was a ton of athleticism and her swing. I saw her range out and make crazy plays,” Jones said. McClain struggled in her sophomore year at Campbell, and Jones’ goal was to bring her back to her best.

“When she got here, I was like, let’s kind of try and get back to your natural athleticism. Let’s have your body working in sync and just letting things translate from there,” Jones said. “I think she’s just continued over time to just own that, feel that and be able to repeat it.”

The moments have always felt big for McClain throughout her time in the High Country, most notably after she scored the winning run against Georgia State University on March 29.

“It gets emotional, especially like for the Georgia State game when GB hit that ball up the middle, and I just gave them my all going home,” McClain said. “It’s just a team effort and seeing how hard my teammates worked to be in those moments.”

McClain and the Black and Gold as a whole have had persistence to keep them going even when the team is

“I don’t think that we’ve ever given up. We’ve faced some adversity, but we haven’t let it get us down, and I think that we’re gonna compete until the final day,” Barrett said.

Myles Tate’s

move

to

cyprus: ‘I got so much motivation; if I wanted to stop, I couldn’t’

Former App State guard Myles Tate shed his college jersey in 2025 and began a new chapter in familiar colors but an unfamiliar place.

Following his senior 2024-25 season, Tate joined TRIA EKA AEL Limassol Basketball Club, a professional basketball team in the Republic of Cyprus, approximately 6,000 miles from his hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

When Tate finished his collegiate career, he had set his sights on the next level — the NBA. However, after only receiving interest from the G-League, he turned his sights toward developing and making a name for himself overseas.

“I chose this team because I would have the best opportunity to show what I could do,” Tate said.

Tate is keeping his word with a stellar rookie season, averaging 17.2 points, with a career high of 31 points, reached twice this season.

Tate is also scoring efficiently, shooting 48.6% inside the arc and 34.6% from 3-point range.

Despite these numbers, Tate had to adjust to his new lifestyle on and off the hardwood.

“It’s really different from home because, at home, you got your family with you,” Tate said. “That’s definitely a hard part, being out here, is not being able to talk to them.”

Tate said the game is different in the United States compared to overseas.

“It has definitely been a learning curve from pro to college as far as basketball and the way they play because the style of play is different overseas,” Tate said. “Overseas, it’s a lot of system-based basketball, ball movement and player movement.”

However, Tate attributes a key part of his success to the Mountaineers and head coach Dustin Kerns for teaching him the importance of defense.

“I think the biggest thing from App State was on the defensive side. We play some of the same defenses that I played at App State,” Tate said.

He also recounts how Kerns would not put players on the court who could not defend, which is similar to his current head coach, Kalia Papadopoulou.

Playing overseas can be a hard and thankless grind, as players are away from their families and often paid little money. However, Tate has bigger motivations.

“I’ll say number one is my faith in God. I really got big faith, and I know I wouldn’t be in this position without him. He gives me the strength to get up every day and the motivation to keep going,” Tate said.

His mom was a minister, which resulted in Tate’s faith strengthening as he grew up in the church.

He also plays for someone who did not have the chance to reach his potential.

“I played football in middle school, and I played quarterback, and one of my receivers and one of my good friends, Jacob McCollum, when I was in eighth grade, he passed away in a dirt bike incident, and he wore number 12,” Tate said. “So that following year, I started wearing number 12 and never picked another jersey number.”

Tate takes all of his motivation and fuels his journey with hopes of reaching a personal goal.

“I want to go to the highest level — an internal goal for myself. I wanna look back and tell myself that I did everything I could to make those things happen,” Tate said.

Tate is nearing the end of his rookie season and plans to play basketball as long as he is able.

“I got so much motivation; if I wanted to stop, I couldn’t,” Tate said. “I want to tell myself that I did everything I could to reach my dreams.”

The funny thing about college is that most of the time, you don’t know what you want to do with your life when you enroll. I certainly didn’t imagine pursuing a career in journalism when I walked into room 217 of the Plemmons Student Union four years ago. And yet, here I am.

During my time here, I’ve learned a lot about journalism. I soon discovered the beauty of sitting down with a person and hearing their perspective, their hopes, and their aspirations. Through this, I’ve come to understand that we can learn a lot about each other if we only take the time to listen. We’re a lot more alike than we’ll ever know.

At the same time, I’ve learned a lot about myself. The ever-changing tide of newswriting can be hectic, even overwhelming at times. One day, I’m combing through the archives, and the next, I’m running across campus to cover a breaking story. Through my experience with this organization, I’ve learned to

cherish the calm before the storm. But when the storm rolls in — and believe me, it will — I’ve learned that even the greatest of storms must be endured. Thankfully, they will not be endured alone.

Of all things to come from The Appalachian, I am most grateful to have met so many incredible people over the past four years and to be a part of this community — one from which I’ve developed lifelong friendships. To everyone I’ve worked with, I cannot thank you enough.

I often like to imagine what my younger self would think of me now. Undoubtedly, she would have imagined some things to have panned out differently, as I’m sure we all would. But I also like to think that she would

be proud of how far I’ve come. I’m still writing my life story — in fact, I’ve only just begun. However, I know that my time here has served me well, and that I’ll be able to walk into the next phase of my life more confident than when I first stepped into room 217.

I always go over my assigned word count — it’s been a fault I’ve had with almost every story I’ve written, and this column is no different. But I’ll leave you with one final lesson I’ve learned here: Words hold power. They can do incredible things. Use them.

Ctrl + S

I’ve worked for The Appalachian for three years, and this is the first article I’ve ever written for the newspaper, so go easy on me. As a visual person, I’ve always preferred to communicate through graphics, color and typography.

I joined the paper with the intention to push myself out of my comfort zone and get used to putting my work out into the public eye. After racking up more than 100 bylines, ad designs and internal branding projects, I can now reminisce on my earliest graphics with a strong sense of sentimentality.

I started as a member of the graphics desk in 2023 and worked my way up from Associate Graphics Editor to Visual Managing Editor. I never imagined myself in a leadership role in journalism, but stepping into this position showed me how rewarding it is to support passionate creatives and help bring their ideas to fruition.

A special thank you to Rian Hughes for their support since my first Graphics Desk meeting as a shy sophomore. Watching you give your all to make each monthly edition the best it can be has been admirable and inspiring.

And thank you to everyone who packed into those sweaty library study rooms each month to make the newspaper something we could all be proud of. Every one of you has the passion and dedication to go far.

Now that I’m reflecting on my time with The Appalachian and App State, I wish I could hit Ctrl + Z and do it all over again. For now, it’s time to Ctrl + S and close out this hectic, memorable and valuable chapter of my life.

The hardest goodbye is to the place that helped you grow

I don’t even know where to start to express how thankful I am for The Appalachian! Attending my first full staff meeting as a sophomore truly changed my life. From that moment, I knew I wanted to be part of an organization that would make a real impact on both my future and my college experience.

I remember coming in without a clear idea of which side of The Appalachian I wanted to be part of, but learning about the new Translations Desk opening gave me a sense of purpose instantly. Helping to write coverage in Spanish for the Spanishspeaking community meant so much to me because it showed that The Appalachian was making an effort to reach people more deeply and inclusively.

As time went on, I realized that The Appalachian was constantly evolving to make significant changes

as an organization. This led me to join the business side. It wasn’t always easy, and challenges definitely arose, but that experience pushed me in many ways. I learned that the work I was doing truly made a difference, not just for the paper but for the people around me.

Having the opportunity to become the Business Manager in just one semester was life-changing. That role showed me how vital the business side of the newspaper is and how much it contributes to the organization’s success. I saw firsthand how much our team contributed to The Appalachian, and I felt proud to help showcase that through our collective work. Surpassing our budget goals was exciting, but what meant even more to me was the people I got to share that with. Having

Keelyn McCabe and Annie Stidham there to support me meant a lot, and I will always be grateful for their encouragement and friendship. Mentoring student staff and helping them grow was also one of the most rewarding parts of this experience. From traveling to California with my business desk to grabbing wings before Editorial Board meetings with my best friend, Owen, The Appalachian gave me memories, opportunities and growth I will carry with me long after college. I am truly grateful to have been part of it.

I remember walking into room 217 with my roommate for my first Graphics Desk meeting in 2022 as a timid sophomore. I sat in the back right corner with the other graphic artists. I looked around at the group, taking in the people I observed: the tall girl from my sculpture class, a boy I recognized from around Wey Hall, a boy I was going through the graphic design program with, and finally, my new graphics editor, McNeil Johnston.

I had no clue that that little meeting was going to be a pivotal moment for me in figuring out who I am and what I want in life. Without The Appalachian and the Graphics Desk, I never would have discovered my passion for print media or found my major, Graphic Communications Management. There, I was allowed to tap into my creative side and trained to be a strong, competent print professional.

How the Oxford comma changed my life

When I was in kindergarten, my teacher complained to my parents that I asked to go to the bathroom too frequently. When I was in high school, I would leave math class and sit on the windowsill inside the handicap bathroom.

It turns out I didn’t have stomach problems; I had ADHD.

Faced with an inability to focus and sit still, I didn’t want to give my energy to trivial things like the Pythagorean theorem.

Coming to App State, I finally found something that could keep my attention: The Appalachian — specifically, the Copy Editing Desk.

I knew from my first meeting that I was in the right place when each of the copy editors commiserated our despair over AP Style’s inane lack of Oxford comma usage.

Now, after two years and hundreds of removed Oxford commas, I’ve had countless opportunities. From a trip to

New York to leading the most talented copy editors, The Appalachian has given me a lot.

One of the most significant opportunities has been getting to write articles. I originally joined the copy desk because I didn’t think I was a good enough writer. Thanks to Owen Marcellino and Alex Wallin, I have been able to write a couple of articles on topics that are meaningful to me.

There are a lot more people I want to thank and nowhere near a large enough word count to do so. Thank you to my parents Brandon and Tassi Smith for encouraging me to attend the interest meeting for The Appalachian and supporting me throughout my life. Thank you to Maddie Parkes for double bylining with me multiple times and being the first person to read anything I write. Our articles for The Appalachian have truly been my favorite ones. To Meg Frantz, you are forever my FEIC, and I your ACE. Thank you for all of

your support throughout the year. I could not have asked for a better Editor-in-Chief. Thank you to Vivian Parks for teaching me everything I know. I hope I’ve done half as good a job at training my successors. To Emma Claire Broome and Dabney Holmes, I am so proud of both of you and can not wait to see all that you achieve as Chief Copy Editors. To each of my copy editors, desk meetings with all of you — from friendship bracelets and sticker sheets to “The Vampire Diaries” — have been the highlight of my weeks throughout the year.

The members of The Appalachian have been there for me at my highs and lows, or perhaps I should say my roses and thorns. Nothing about my college experience has meant more than the people I’ve met and the confidence I’ve gained through The Appalachian. To anyone reading this, I hope you find something that not only holds your attention but improves you as a person.

A special thanks to McNeil Johnston, my first graphics editor, without whom I would not be where I am today. Thank you to Kaitlyn Close, the tall girl from my sculpture class, for allowing me to assist you during my time as your associate editor and entrusting me with the care of each month’s newspaper. Thank you to Chloe Pound, for being the best partner in graphics communications. Lastly, thank you Jenna Guzman, Editor-in-Chief ’23 -’25, for letting me know that The Appalachian was looking for artists for its Graphics Desk.

2 magazines, 5 articles, 14 newspapers and over 200 bylines later, my time at The Appalachian has finally drawn to an end. Thank you for trusting me with the newspaper every month for the last two years and allowing me to contribute to the art of physical media. Is print dead? No — but it is up to us to maintain it.

BREAKING: I’m Graduating!

When I first arrived at my first full staff meeting for The Appalachian, I felt very out of place. It was in this tiny room in the student union (we have since upgraded), and the Editorial Board at the time started the meeting by running down each desk and what they did. My first News Desk meeting ran until 9:30 p.m. I remember walking home more excited than I had been since coming to App State.

I had never written a news story before. I transferred to App State at 22 years old as a creative writing major. I felt awkward, one may say “chopped” and “unc”, considering I was much older than my peers. I had written before, sure, if you count a 200,000-word fanfiction and a few short stories here and there, but AP Style was a foreign language to me. I thought, “How on earth did I end up in this position?”

My first heartbreak came in the form of omitting an Oxford comma. This new type of writing was a challenge to say

the least. But having been a student at App State for a year and yet to find my group of people, I was determined to figure it out.

The Appalachian newsroom is where I found my family.

Quickly, I found my footing. Guidance came in the form of friendship. I wrote a wide range of different news articles, dipping my toe into the happenings of App State and Boone. This town soon made its place in my heart. Journalism made me feel more a part of a community than I ever had before.

The experiences I’ve had here at App State have been unforgettable. I’ve tried new things and met new people. Never did I think I’d have a position such as News Editor for an awardwinning student newspaper, but I couldn’t be more honored to have held this position.

Taking a chance on yourself is the first step. If you find the courage to take that step, odds are that others will take a chance on you too. The Appalachian took a chance on me, and I found a home inside that newsroom because I took that first chance on myself. Find your people, find your home. There is always time.

For a newsroom that never sleeps, it sure feels still

Like everyone else, I’ve always hated the feeling of regret. So when a close friend encouraged me to join the The Appalachian student-run newspaper, I figured, why not give it a try?

At the start of my junior year, I pitched a story at my first Arts & Culture Desk meeting. Quickly, I realized studentjournalism was a place I could — without fear of judgement — talk about the one thing I love most: music.

While my editors enjoyed my enthusiasm to pick up a last-minute pitch or write yet another album review, what they loved most about me was clear; welcoming my chaotic, humorous and energetic character week after week.

Despite repeatedly crying in the practice rooms of Broyhill Music Hall and listening to “Both Sides, Now” by Joni Mitchell, I looked forward to each Thursday night where everything went still as I sat with my fellow Arts & Culture reporters.

From there, the opportunity to serve as the Arts & Culture Editor seemed to fall right into place. While leading desk meetings and assigning deadlines, I noticed a familiar sense of stillness in some of my reporters. The ones who attended meetings not to necessarily pitch a story, but rather to simply exist with me, reminded me of every reason I continued to show up.

Without realizing, I had created a similar environment to the one I first fell in love with at The Appalachian. The gratification this fills me with is worth more than any words I could write, and I owe it to every member of the Arts & Culture Desk I had the pleasure of working alongside.

the time to rip apart and figure out — they’re fleeting as it is.

Ultimately, I am still like everyone else with more regrets than worth counting. Even then, I know my decision to join The Appalachian will never be

My entire life has been surrounded by artistic communities, and yet I have never experienced one quite like the newsroom. Perhaps its unexpected nature made it so significant, or maybe it was just the people, but what I do know is good things aren’t worth taking

One article will change your life

How am I supposed to sum up three years with The Appalachian into this short farewell column? It’s nearly impossible, but I’ll try.

First off, I wish I could say that I wasn’t scared walking into my first staff meeting, but that would be an utter lie. This shy girl had no idea what her purpose was in the newsroom, but I could feel it coming.

Sports are my passion, but journalism has become my life. It gives me a reason to wake up in the morning and keeps me up until midnight to wait to post an article. This column’s purpose isn’t to be sad; it’s supposed to be a celebration of years’ worth of work and accomplishments. A feature on Jordan Favors was my first print article I had ever written for The Appalachian. I got the amazing opportunity to interview

Shawn Clark and stand inside of Kidd Brewer Stadium with a purpose for the first time.

I picked up around 50 copies of the Appalachian to show my friends and family, because I finally got to see my name in big bold letters under “Jordan Favors finds his feet in Mountaineer football.”

I had no idea at the time, but this article changed my life.

I was still small in the newsroom, but again I knew I would find my purpose. Around one year later, I had finally felt like I had the ability to take my experience further. I was now the Associate Sports Editor. I had no idea what this would hold for me, but luckily, I took one foot in front of the other.

This column would not be complete without a big thank you to Max Schwanz

— the Sports Editor. This has been the most fun and challenging experience, and I am so glad to say we accomplished it all together in just one year. We have made differences in the newspaper that will last for years to come.

Anyone confused or scared about what the future may hold for themselves within journalism, remember: One article will change your life.

Good Luck and Goodbye

News and art are mediums of communication which intersect and interact through many vectors. I am exceedingly grateful that The Appalachian is a place for burgeoning creatives to hone their skills, collaborate, make a local impact and gain real experience through their editorial contributions.

I have grown a lot as an artist, designer and illustrator through my time as a graphics artist for The Appalachian. I never would have imagined myself as a member of the Editorial Board if it were not for the eagerness and openness the visuals teams have to anyone who wishes to be a part, regardless of expertise.

We have a lot of knowledge to share, and I would encourage any creative person who’s trying to find some real experience in art, writing, photography or whatever to give one of our desks a
