Antigua is home to Nelson’s Dockyard, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the only working Georgian naval dockyard in the world. The historic dockyard bustles with activity as the museum, bakeries, restaurants and gift shops swing into operation each day. On the other hand, our ‘little sister’ island of Barbuda is home to spectacular beaches and the largest colony of magnificent frigate birds in the Western Hemisphere.

Our islands are worth exploring, and we invite you to safely journey through colourful St. John’s city to the seaside village of Old Road, and then on to fruit-laden Fig Tree Drive, and even the nautical scene at English Harbour. Your journey can continue over to the dramatic twin sugar mills of Betty’s Hope, and the crashing waves at the natural attraction, Devil’s Bridge.

If adventure is what you are looking for, take a hike through our nature reserve or enjoy a challenging canopy zip-line tour in our lush tropical rainforest. Book some extreme action with an eco-tour speed boat adventure or an island safari. For a slower pace, witness a game of warri with the islanders, join a herbal garden tour or take a city foodie walking tour led by a local guide.

Our capital St. John’s is a vibrant city well worth a visit, its two waterfront shopping areas offering easy access to cruise ship visitors. Heritage Quay is a modern boulevard of duty-free shops, while neighbouring Redcliffe Quay is a charming contrast with its restored 18th century buildings forming a cosy complex of boutiques and restaurants. And if you’d like to dip into our past, the museum in Long Street and twin-towered cathedral both offer areas of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of town.

Antigua’s reputation as a sailing mecca remains unsurpassed throughout the Caribbean. Over the years, Jolly Harbour has developed into a major yachting marina complete with a shopping centre and residential village. But it’s English Harbour that long ago put Antigua on the nautical map, and it retains its traditional atmosphere to this day. Worldclass sailing events like Antigua Sailing Week and RORC Caribbean 600 are annual events.

Last but not least is Antigua’s ‘no problem’ attitude towards life. Everyone quickly adapts to the unhurried pace of ‘the islands’, and an atmosphere of warmth and good humour prevails. English is our official language, although we locals often speak a dialect that can be a challenge to understand!

ARRIVE ANTIGUA

Antigua & Barbuda lie 1,400 miles from Miami, 2,100 miles from Toronto and 4,000 miles from London. Wherever you’re travelling from, you can expect the warmest of welcomes at our international airports, scenic harbours and bustling cruise terminal...

ANTIGUA AIRPORT

Antigua’s V.C. Bird International proudly celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025. Previously known as Coolidge International Airport, it was renamed in honour of our first Prime Minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Senior. Conveniently located just four miles from the capital St. John’s, the airport is certainly one of the most advanced in the Caribbean. It was rebuilt in 2015 and offers a variety of dining and duty-free opportunities, as well as self-service check-in kiosks, speedy processing times, and an updated Executive Lounge with an outdoor deck overlooking Jumby Bay Island. The runway stretches 3,040 metres and not only welcomes the largest commercial aircraft, but also private jets serviced by a prominent FBO (Fixed Base Operator).

BARBUDA AIRPORT

Officially opened in October, 2024, Barbuda’s new international airport is a major step forward in transforming our sister island into a luxury destination in its own right. Located just 10 minutes from Codrington, the US$14 million Barbuda International Airport (BIA) boasts an extended 1,860-metre runway that also allows for regular night landings thanks to its full LED lighting system. The expanded parking apron can host multiple private jets and twin-engine airliners, while the dedicated FBO terminal will cater to high-end visitors seeking Barbuda’s eco experiences and pink sand beaches. Please note there are no taxi ranks so remember to arrange transport in advance.

AIRLINES

Antigua continues to be serviced by a large number of international airlines. Flying in from North America are American Airlines, Delta, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, Air Canada, and WestJet. Those with direct air links from Europe include British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic from London's Heathrow and Gatwick, and Condor from Frankfurt, Germany. Serving the larger regional territories are Caribbean Airlines, LIAT Air, and interCaribbean Airways; while SVG Air, WinAir, Fly Montserrat, Sunrise Airways, SkyHigh Aviation, Tradewind Aviation and TransAnguilla Airways offer regional flights. Chartered inter-island airport transfers are also available through Antigua-based CalvinAir Helicopters.

TAXI FARES

Antigua's taxi fares are fixed, not metered. A one-way fare (for 1 to 2 persons in a shared taxi bus) from the airport to nearby St. John’s is about US$20 (EC$54), while a trip to Nelson’s Dockyard in the south of the island is about US$48 (EC$130).

DRIVE ON THE LEFT

Should you wish to pick up a car at the airport rather than at your hotel, car rental agencies can be found on exiting Customs. To be issued with a local licence (valid for 90 days), you’ll have to present your current valid driver’s licence and pay US$20 (EC$50). Driving is British-style on the left, and please take extra care at night as you’ll encounter goats, speed-bumps and other drivers forgetting to dim their headlights! It's advisable to reserve a car in advance, especially during the winter months and Sailing Week in April.

LOCAL CURRENCY

Antigua’s local currency is the Eastern Caribbean (EC) dollar but US dollars are widely accepted –the exchange rate of US$1 = EC$2.70 is general knowledge to all. Credit cards are also widely accepted but if you need cash, the airport has a bureau of exchange and ATMs. The Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank lies just outside the entrance. Banks in St. John's include ECAB, ACB, CUB, First Caribbean and Global Bank.

CRUISE SHIPS

The world’s finest cruise ships regularly visit Antigua. Up to 5 mega-ships can dock in St. John's at any one time with a tender service also available. The port's exit gates lie about 500 feet (150 meters) from the ships' gangways so access to the bars, restaurants, casinos and duty-free shops of Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay are a brief stroll away on flat terrain. Taxis are readily available if you're not booked on an organised tour and prefer to explore our historical and scenic delights at your own pace.

PRIVATE YACHTS

Many visitors arrive here by yacht, the four main ports of entry being English Harbour, Jolly Harbour, Heritage Quay, and St. John’s Deep Water Harbour. You should complete the eSeaClear pre-arrival notification online, but if you don’t have computer access, forms and computer terminals are available at the ports of entry. You must fly a yellow Q (quarantine flag), and everyone but the master must stay on board until the entry procedures have been completed. A cruising permit is required to cruise our waters, and those of you leaving your vessel in Antigua must have a valid airline ticket to another country.

HOT SAUCE IS BACK!

Susie’s Hot Sauce is as Antiguan as Shirley Heights. Established as a cottage industry by Susannah Tonge over 65 years ago, the original hot sauce was expanded to more than 11 different flavours by her daughter, Rosemarie V. McMaster (MBE). Sadly, these much-loved condiments have been off the table for a few years, but the McMaster family recently relaunched the brand with a limited-edition charity bottle featuring the pioneering rowers of Team Antigua Island Girls. And whilst this collaboration duly honours all women of exceptional determination, it’s also a nod to the fact that when the girls were rowing the oceans, they used Susie’s Hot Sauce to flavour their rehydrated food! ANTIGUA & BARBUDA Hosts Commonwealth Summit

Our twin-island nation is proud to be stepping onto the world stage in 2026. Government heads from across the Commonwealth of Nations, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, will meet in our vibrant capital city of St. John’s to discuss issues of particular interest to small island developing states such as ours. Climate change and international trade will rank high on the CHOGM agenda, with business, youth and women’s issues also featuring prominently. As the smallest country to ever host this prestigious biennial gathering, Antigua is looking forward to showing off its scenic beauty and unique culture to the international delegates. A trip to Barbuda, a T-10 cricket match and a concert featuring global artists are all planned.

Take Jennifer Meranto’s ‘Adopt A Coastline’ initiative with its dedicated community of ‘waterkeepers’ and ‘coastal stewards’ venturing out in all weathers to protect our threatened coastline. The ‘Elkhorn Marine Conservancy’ takes a more scientific approach. Named after the iconic elkhorn coral that once defined our offshore reefs, they use a state-of-the-art tank system to identify our most resilient corals in the hope of restocking the wild population. And thanks to youth programmes and community projects, both of these non-profits are taking the next generation with them. Please show them your support.

CALLING ALL BRIDGE PLAYERS

If you enjoy meeting new people as much as you revel in a little friendly competition, The Antigua Contract Bridge Association (ACBA) would love you to join them. Established several decades ago, the bridge club now has its own headquarters at Tamarinds, Factory Road, just outside St. John’s. MAY IS CULINARY MONTH

Antigua has been nominated as ‘The Caribbean’s Best Emerging Culinary City Destination 2025’ at the World Culinary Awards. ANTIGUA RACING CUP 9 to 12 April, 2026

Designed for racing purists, the newly launched Antigua Racing Cup is for those seeking high-energy coastal racing with the focus on spirited competition. This inaugural regatta will include four days of exhilarating sailing in enviable conditions featuring trade winds, balmy temperatures and big seas. Skippers and crews can look forward to a fast-paced schedule and a finely tuned assortment of courses, along with the customary afternoon prize-givings.

ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK 22 to 26 April, 2026

The 57th edition of Antigua Sailing Week is returning to its historic format of point-to-point courses. Each day’s sailing itinerary will take participants to scenic anchorages around the island, and they can choose to either race or cruise between them. The event is open to a mix of non-spinnaker monohull and multi-hull vessels along with Corinthian crews, liveaboard cruisers and bareboat holidaymakers. As is the tradition, the teams will also enjoy an assorted programme of after-race social events influenced by Antigua’s lively local culture.

Not a sailor? No problem. Spectators can watch all the action from bird’s eye vantage points along our elevated southern coastline or on our panoramic hiking trails. During the Antigua Racing Cup, the boat tours heading out from Falmouth Harbour to ‘Chase the Race’ are a great way of viewing the on-the-water battles up close. Or for a particularly unforgettable experience, why not opt for a thrilling fly-by of the racing fleet aboard a CalvinAir helicopter? And, of course, during Antigua Sailing Week, visitors and locals alike can look forward to afternoon beach parties featuring local eats and island-style entertainment.

ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA

15 to 20 April, 2026

Each year an impressive collection of classic yachts and passionate sailors gather in Antigua from all over the world to take part in ‘Classics’ and to enjoy racing in the ideal trade wind sailing conditions of the Caribbean.

This unique, world-class event attracts a variety of competitors from the mighty tall ships, vintage yachts, magnificent schooners and traditional island craft. Some of the yachts date back to the early 1900s, whereas others are modern-day reproductions classed as ‘Spirit of Tradition’.

The Regatta traditionally starts with the Concours d’Elégance when the condition and maintenance of the yachts are judged along with the singlehanded race. The full fleet then enjoys four days of racing with courses designed to take the best advantage of wind, sea, scenery and skill. Spectators can view the action from high points along the south coast like Fort Charlotte, Shirley Heights and Block House.

After racing each day, the yachts return to dock in the historic 18th century UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard to take part in the shoreside events. After the last race on the Sunday, the yachts pass through the dockyard for the ‘Parade of Classics’ which is a wonderful opportunity to see the boats in all their glory and crews close up.

The regatta closes on Monday 20th April with gig rowing races, cream teas on the lawn of the Admiral’s Inn, the prize-giving ceremony and dancing under the stars at the after-party.

The magical combination of serious racing, laid-back Antiguan hospitality, plenty of rum, sunshine and camaraderie in a friendly relaxed atmosphere makes the Antigua Classics a favourite in the yachting calendar.

ROYAL OCEAN RACING CLUB

Antigua continues to play an increasingly important role in the RORC’s offshore racing series…

Our perfect sailing conditions combine with our social events, daily awards and grand prizegivings to attract vessels, sailors and spectators from around the globe. And thanks to the Falmouth-based Antigua Yacht Club and its army of local volunteers, all the competing yachtsmen are assured of warm welcomes on arrival and cold beers on completion of their races…

RORC Transatlantic Race 2026 • 11 January, 2026

The longest race in the RORC calendar attracts a diverse fleet from around the world. Starting on Sunday, 11th January, 2026 from Marina Lanzarote, Canary Islands, the 12th edition of the RORC Transatlantic Race will finish 3,000 miles later in the Caribbean. RORC Nelson’s Cup Series • 17-20 February, 2026

The fourth edition of the RORC Nelson’s Cup Series continues to be a popular stand-alone event prior to the RORC Caribbean 600. After two days of inshore racing, the series concludes with the Antigua 360, a 50 nautical-mile circumvention of the island. Prizegiving on Friday, 20th February, 2026.

RORC Caribbean 600 • 23-27 February, 2026

With a well-deserved reputation as the Caribbean’s premier offshore race, the 17th edition of this ‘mustdo’ sailing event is sure to carry on the legacy. Starting in Antigua on Monday, 23rd February, 2026, the 600-mile course uses eleven Eastern Caribbean islands as turning marks. With such a long course, the race is an interesting challenge for both navigators and crew, and the finish times can vary by days. Attracting over 600 sailors from around the world, the RORC Caribbean 600 continues to be a firm fixture on the international racing calendar.

SPORTS FISHING TOURNAMENTS

May, September & November, 2026

Antigua's waters teem with fish and there’s nothing like landing ‘the big one’ when it really matters. Our three annual fishing tournaments regularly attract over 25 teams, the enthusiastic anglers always leaving early and greeted on their return by spectators eager to view and maybe even sample their catch...

This season starts with the ‘58th Antigua & Barbuda Sports Fishing Tournament’ between 20 and 24 May On the Friday, the boat that catches the largest billfish wins a big cash prize, while on the Saturday and Sunday, the hard-fought competition turns to tuna, wahoo and kingfish. Club records include a 176lb yellowfin tuna.

Another opportunity to enjoy fresh fish shortly after it returns to dry land is 'The Francis Nunes Jr. Memorial Sports Fishing Tournament & Seafood Festival'. Set for Saturday, 26 September, this youth-orientated event honours the tournament’s past chairman, and you can test your luck on the water, take part in a ‘Cook-Off’ or enjoy the local dishes on offer at Nelson's Dockyard. SUPER YACHT CHALLENGE

3-8 March, 2026

Up to 15 superyachts (80 ft. and over) enjoy a celebration of sailing solely for the pleasure of owners, guests and crew. The fleet takes part in 4 days of racing governed by the International Superyacht Rule, with pursuit races along the south coast. The Challenge is competitive but fun, particularly ashore where everyone enjoys a relaxed atmosphere free from commercial endorsements. 3,000 Miles across the Atlantic Ocean!

An annual trans-Atlantic rowing race that pushes the limits of human endurance, the ‘World’s Toughest Row’ leaves the shores of La Gomera in the Canary Islands every December and finishes 3,000 nautical miles later in English Harbour, Antigua.

Up to 45 teams from around the globe take on this epic challenge, rowing 24 hours a day in 2-hour shifts for anywhere between 30 and 90 days. Along the way, they face 40-foot waves, tropical storms, extreme heat, sleep deprivation, and the psychological test of life in a cramped, constantly moving boat.

What unites these rowers is more than strength or skill. It’s a shared thirst for adventure and a commitment to making a difference. Each competitor rows not just for their own personal triumph, but also to raise funds and awareness for a charity close to their heart.

Antigua continues to play a vital role in the event. We made history back in 2015 when Team Wadadli wasn’t just the first local crew to participate but also the oldest team to ever row across any ocean. Team Antigua placed an impressive second in 2017, Team Antigua Island Girls rowed into national legend in 2019, and Team Antigua Pairs became the first local duo to take on the Atlantic in 2020. NESTING TURTLES

JUNE TO OCTOBER

You may be lucky to spot a turtle during the nesting season between June and October. They usually nest on one of our offshore islands, but they can be seen on the mainland too. Sights can include anything from hatching baby turtles to witnessing a mother laying her eggs. Do not disturb them, of course. The Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) is a voluntary organisation that patrols the beaches collecting interesting data. Did you know a warmer incubation temperature makes the turtle female, for example? Or that 'Teeny M' is the name of the monitored resident turtle of the National Park waters?

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025, the International Kite Festival is now an Antiguan institution particularly popular amongst families. Every Easter Monday, thousands of people head off to Devil’s Bridge on our east coast to enjoy the dynamic kite flying displays. MOODS OF PAN

Enjoy the unique sounds of pan at this festival hosted by Gemonites Steel Orchestra. Steelbands are traditionally made up of old pieces of metal like irons, tyre rims and steel pipes. Yet Caribbean steel pans have evolved into highly technical instruments, honed out of steel drums, sunken and burned over hot fires, and then chromed and turned.

This festival at the Dean William Lake Cultural Centre gives individuals, especially the young, the opportunity to showcase their talent in performances demonstrating all genres of music. Classical, gospel, reggae, jazz and calypso are all covered. A key component is the ‘Twenty Five A-Side’ competition which allows competitors to portray a creative and often comedic presentation. Musical storylines are brought to life to evoke laughter and excitement as the crowd responds. Several regional and international steel orchestras enter the competition hoping to win the coveted title.

ANTIGUA CARNIVAL

Often described as 'the Caribbean's greatest summer festival', this event showcases all aspects of carnival including pageantry, mas and steel pan music. We do hope you'll join in all the fun between 25 July and 4 August, 2026.

This annual celebration of emancipation is a two-week summer festival. It takes place in the capital city of St. John's, as well as at Carnival City in the Antigua Recreation Ground. The festival climaxes on Emancipation Day, starting with (4am) J'ouvert Morning when people take to the streets to dance to the local jam bands, steel bands and iron bands often dressed in colourful and exotic outfits. This is the true meaning of freedom – Emancipation!

The great carnivals of the world are judged primarily on their music and mas. Carnival Monday and Tuesday always fall on the first Monday and Tuesday in August. On these two days the carnival troupes descend on the streets of St. John's adorned in their colourful costumes and dancing to the pumping soca rhythms and pulsating music of popular DJs.

Carnival mas costumes depict colourful and magical themes often with national or regional significance. Their beading, feathers and jewels represent months of work in the various mas camps where the costumes are handmade. Mas makers often work into the early hours to produce hundreds of costumes in the hope of winning the coveted title of 'Band of the Year'.

Other events in the line-up include a fiercely competitive Calypso competition where masters of the art compete against each other with songs of social commentary. The high-energy 'Soca Monarch' competition draws quite a crowd. Artists are judged on various criteria and since crowd participation carries significant weight, the audience is encouraged to join in the fun.

The 'Carnival Queen Show' is always eagerly anticipated. To win this coveted title, young ladies are judged on their poise, performing talent and interview skills. 'Teen Splash' is a highlycompetitive talent competition for teens. Carnival City is bursting with youngsters on this night.

No Carnival festival would be complete without a 'Panorama' competition. The rivalry that exists between the various steel orchestras fuels their passion to practise musical renditions for months in advance of the competition. This hard work and dedication is evident on 'Panorama Night' when the steel orchestras grace the stage at Carnival City with high-energy performances often punctuated with dramatic antics. The audience is always captivated. Carnival ends with 'Last Lap' on Carnival Tuesday where the jam bands wind their way through the streets of St. John's pumping out the most popular songs of the carnival season. This truly is the perfect time to experience the culture and music of our twin-island nation.

It’s easy to get married in Antigua. Here’s all you need to know about the legal procedures and costs...

• First go to the Ministry of Legal Affairs on Queen Elizabeth Highway in St. John’s. Take both your passports, as well as your divorce papers, if relevant. There’ll be a friendly interview between 9am and 12 noon, before your licence is issued. Cost EC$405.00 (US$150.00).

• Next you must pay the necessary legal costs at the Registrar General’s office. This is in the old Treasury Building at the top of High Street in St. John’s. The fee for registering at the Court House is EC$100.00 (US$40.00). The marriage certificate is EC$25.00 (US$10.00). The Marriage Officers fee for performing a wedding outside the Court House is EC$675.00 (US$250.00).

• The location of your wedding is up to you. The marriage must be solemnised before 2 witnesses –just ask fellow hotel guests to do this for you.

This imposing building, visible from all over St. John’s, was originally constructed in 1683, replaced in 1745 and totally rebuilt of stone in 1843 after an earthquake. The interior is completely cased in pitch-pine and there are interesting memorial stones. Restoration continues.

The oldest building in St. John’s, the Georgian-style stone courthouse of 1750 has been the museum’s home since 1986. ST. JOHN’S PUBLIC MARKET

This bustling, covered market at the edge of St. John’s is where to stop off for the freshest Caribbean fruit and vegetables. Upstairs are small boutique-style shops specialising in local souvenirs. The market is easily identified by the imposing sculpture of V.C. Bird, the Founder of the Nation, which lies at the intersection of all the roads leading to the market.

SUGAR MILLS

These are dotted about the landscape, mostly in ruins but some with their solid outside structures still intact. By 1705 most of Antigua was planted with sugarcane, and 170 mills were built for crushing the cane. At that time each factory could produce 55 tons of sugar a year. Nowadays, there are a few carefully-restored mills often incorporated into more modern developments. Those at Harmony Hall, Mill Reef, Galley Bay and Weatherills Hotel certainly contribute a unique feature to each property.

BETTY’S HOPE

Betty’s Hope was granted to Christopher Codrington in 1674 and remained in the family for over 250 years. The ruins are located in the centre of Antigua and evoke the atmosphere of times past. Betty’s Hope had a labour force trained as craftsmen. There are twin sugar mill towers and one has been restored. An Interpretation Centre guides you through the history and life of the estate.

SATURDAY FOOD STALLS

Every Saturday food stalls pop up along our roadsides. These may be your best opportunity to get a taste of traditional Antiguan dishes like conch water, goat water (delicious stews), blood pudding, salt fish and ducana, and charcoal-grilled chicken and ribs. The local drinks freshly made with ginger, passionfruit and coconut water are equally delicious.

FORTS OF ANTIGUA

Built by the British to guard against invasion during the 18th century, Antigua’s forts are located all around our indented coastline. Fort James ‘protects’ St. John’s Harbour, charming local restaurants like BeachLimerZ nestled at its base. Fort Barrington overlooks Deep Bay, while Fort Berkeley is at Nelson’s Dockyard. If you take a walk up to these immense fortifications, some of which still have their original cannons, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the neighbouring islands.

PARHAM

This quaint and historic little town was Antigua’s earliest British settlement. And Parham is still notable today for St. Peter’s, a spectacular church once described as ‘the finest church in the British West Indies’. It was built in the 1840s after the original wooden church was burnt down. It’s a beautiful and unusual octagonal shape designed by a famous architect of the time, Thomas Weekes. The church indicates the long-ago importance of Parham.

DEVIL’S BRIDGE

Situated at Indian Town close to The Hammock Cove Resort & Spa, this spectacular natural bridge at the head of Indian Creek has blow-holes and spouting surf. Legend says that if you throw two eggs into the water to boil, the devil (who is said to be down there) would keep one and return the other!

SHIRLEY HEIGHTS

After visiting Nelson’s Dockyard, ramble around the fortifications, barracks and powder magazines of our most famous landmark, Shirley Heights. Although as Mrs. Lanaghan once said in 1844 while visiting the area, ‘Really, this marching and counter-marching beneath a tropical sun is no slight matter.’ So relax with a couple of drinks at The Lookout Restaurant with its panoramic views and spectacular sunsets. DOW’S HILL INTERPRETATION CENTRE

Built among the ruins in the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, the Interpretation Centre provides an historic overview of Antigua’s past. ‘Reflections of the Sun’, a fascinating multi-media presentation, is a ‘journey through the dreamy corridors of six periods of the island’s history’.

PILLARS OF HERCULES

Best viewed by boat, the aptly-named and intriguing Pillars of Hercules are natural limestone rock formations that guard the entrance to Freeman’s Bay and English Harbour. Formed by the elements many millennia ago, they are also a popular snorkelling and diving site. Stingrays and trumpet fish are regular visitors to the coral reef extending far beneath the waves.

FIG TREE DRIVE

One of the best drives in Antigua, ‘fig’ may be the Antiguan name for banana, but this winding road is lined with all sorts of tropical fruit trees – guavas, mangoes, oranges and coconuts. It’s the major road branching off the main north/south highway opposite the pink Catholic church outside Liberta. This area of rainforest is something like the Garden of Eden. Go slowly until you descend into Old Road, passing Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff, and getting a glimpse of the pineapple farm.

The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society provides shelter for over 150 donkeys at its Bethesda sanctuary. Here the neglected, roaming donkeys find a safe haven and receive food, water, shelter, medical care and love. The Humane Society offers an ‘Adopt a Donkey’ programme which includes a photo and an adoption certificate. NELSON’S DOCKYARD

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Recently celebrating its 300th anniversary, Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour is our most prized possession and a must-see for any visitor.

As the only continuously working Georgian naval dockyard in the world, Nelson’s Dockyard’s modern facilities make it a haven for anything from traditional sailboats to ultra-luxurious superyachts. The lovinglyrestored buildings of the National Park house charming restaurants, boutiques and inns, as well as the Dockyard Museum, a longstanding favourite with international visitors.

English Harbour was originally established to provide the British Royal Navy with a shipyard where they could keep their vessels in good repair and maintain their ascendency in the Caribbean against other European powers. It was as far back as 1671 that the Governor of the Leeward Islands first wrote about the harbour’s advantages to the Council for Foreign Plantations in London. Christopher Columbus himself never actually moored in Antigua, content to see it from a distance and naming it after the church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Spain.

Thanks to the location and facilities of Nelson’s Dockyard, Antigua was never conquered by any other European powers. Wharves, powder magazines, cisterns and storehouses were constructed, and the British ships could be careened (turned on their sides for repair) and overhauled here, safe from hurricanes.

It was also the ideal port to protect the fleet in troubled times, the enclosed harbour of Freeman’s Bay almost invisible from the open waters. The narrow entrance to the harbour was protected by Fort Berkeley, constructed on the peninsula above the Dockyard and completed in 1744. The great fortifications of Shirley Heights ensured the invincibility of Antigua.

They were named after General Sir Thomas Shirley who arrived on the island in 1781 as Governor. The extensive network of buildings was constructed out of local stone along with brick imported as ballast for the ships coming from England. The military complex includes an obelisk in the cemetery commemorating the officers and men of the 54th Regiment (2nd Battalion Dorsets) who died in service in the West Indies between 1840 and 1851. England’s most famous naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, spent his formative years in Antigua.

Arriving at the age of 26 as Senior Captain and Second-in-Command of the Leeward Islands Station, he was in command of the frigate ‘Boreas’ and headquartered in English Harbour. By the time he left for England and greater glory in 1787, he had married a widow by the name of Frances Nesbit from Nevis.

The National Parks Authority (NPA) is active in maintaining public awareness of the park’s history and heritage. Ongoing archaeological excavations often reveal relics of its rich multi-cultural, multi-ethnic past.

The latest jewel in the park’s crown is Clarence House, named after Prince William Henry, the Duke of Clarence when he was in command of the ‘Pegasus’ in 1787. Regally set on the hillside opposite the Dockyard, this Georgian-era residence has now been restored to its former glory. Visitors can re-live the elegance of an 18th century mansion that has played host to dignitaries and royalty for 200 years. Her Royal Highness, Princess Margaret, actually honeymooned here.

Nelson’s Dockyard National Park offers a wealth of unique and exciting opportunities for all its visitors. You’re welcome to explore it at your leisure, although guided tours are always included in your entrance fee. You can also experience its natural beauty by hiking one of its panoramic nature trails, or why not learn about its past by visiting the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre? In addition to the 15-minute multimedia presentations, ‘Rum in the Ruins’ lectures are also given by Dr. Christopher K. Waters and Ms. Desley Gardner on select Fridays at 5pm. These fascinating talks about the history of our sugar and rum production are accompanied by a glass of Planter’s Rum Punch and life-enhancing vistas of the sun setting behind Nelson’s Dockyard. The Victorian-style Dockyard Museum (open daily from 9am to 5pm) is a cool and pleasant building showcasing many interesting artefacts from bygone years. It was once erroneously known as the Admiral’s House, but Nelson never lived ashore while in Antigua.

The Dockyard also plays host to several special events throughout the year, including Antigua Sailing Week, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta and RORC Caribbean 600. Charming boutiques sell everything from jewellery to resort wear, Island Secret well worth visiting for its high-quality local products and unusual gift ideas.

There are also unique restaurants in the area. The Copper & Lumber Store is an historical inn, while waterfront dining is on offer at the aptly-named Pillars restaurant in the Admiral’s Inn. Boom is its sister eatery just across the bay, its views as good as its food.

If you're in the mood, create and bottle your very own Caribbean rum! A water taxi will take you across the harbour to Academy of Rum at Galleon Beach.

Of course, Shirley Heights Lookout has long been the place to be on Sunday afternoons. Perched almost 500 feet above Nelson’s Dockyard with 360-degree views over Falmouth and English Harbours, this famous party venue offers the most spectacular views of the sun setting over Nelson’s Dockyard.

ANTIGUA’S ISLANDS

Our offshore islands are refuges for everything from whistling ducks and frigate birds to wild boar and Hawksbill turtles...

Many of the islands lie in the North Sound, an idyllic marine park off our northeast coast. Think talcum-powder sands, crystal clear waters and a relaxed Robinson Crusoe-like vibe. The islands can only be reached by boat, of course, but the distances are short. The seas are usually calm and easily navigable by small vessels, as well as by larger yachts familiar with the coral reefs.

Most of the day-trip cruise boats tie up close to the main islands. Great Bird Island is particularly popular, although during the week you can have the place to yourselves. You may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the small, harmless and endangered Antigua Racer snake found nowhere else in the world. Nearby Guiana Island has a wide sandy beach, Green Island further along the coast is worth a visit too, and day trips are readily available to Prickly Pear just off Hodges Bay.

Rabbit Island is another interesting island. It's home to breeding colonies of Caribbean brown pelicans, the only diving pelicans in the world. They raise their young in twiggy nests, clearly visible to anyone passing. Some have the good fortune to see the babies with large beaks open, growing to become awkward juveniles, eventually flying off until the next season.

At Hell’s Gate Island there’s an incredible limestone bridge formed by the elements over millennia. Named for the wild Atlantic seas visible through the archway, strolling across the fragile bridge isn't recommended!

Some 25-miles to the southwest is Antigua’s ‘third’ possession, Redonda. Once a desolate expanse of rock noted for its 19th century guano-mining industry, it’s now said to be one of the region’s most ecologically important landscapes. Four years of work by local environmentalists have restored trees and plants, increased the number of critically endangered reptiles, and attracted even more nesting seabirds including boobies and tropicbirds. Visitors will be permitted once the rejuvenation work is completed.

Long Island just off our north shore is slightly more glamorous, of course. It’s home to a large collection of luxury villas, as well as the exclusive Jumby Bay Island resort. Yet the rich and famous who vacation here are happy to share their private idyll with the Hawksbill turtles who return every year to lay their eggs.

Indeed, visitors and Antiguans alike appreciate that these pristine offshore sanctuaries must be preserved for future generations. They view the wildlife from a distance and recognise the importance of leaving no trace of themselves behind.

The Codrington Lagoon National Park is a unique component of the island’s ecosystem and renowned for supporting one of the world's largest colonies of frigate birds (Fregata Magnificens). They flourish happily here despite being a prized tourist attraction.

The male frigate birds are particularly spectacular during the mating season, their wingspan nearly 3 metres and their scarlet throat sacs blow up to the size of balloons to attract their mates. The fluffy young chicks are clearly visible to visitors, their ever open-beaks stuffed with delicious fish by their swooping parents.

Other birds that thrive here include pelicans, tropical mockingbirds, warblers, snipes, ibis, herons, kingfishers, oystercatchers, cormorants and West Indian whistling ducks. Little wonder this bird watchers’ paradise offers authorised bird watching trips.

Barbuda is a coral-fringed island just 62sqm in size. It rises low on the sea only 27 miles to the north of Antigua. So why not escape to this mini-paradise and take a leisurely stroll along its 17-mile stretch of beach? Here you’ll discover soft pink sands, crystal turquoise waters and as much peace and quiet as you can handle...

Barbuda is easy to reach from Antigua. There are daily scheduled flights, helicopter charters and a 90-minute ferry service. International flights and private jets can also now fly into the new airport. Formed from coralline limestone, Barbuda is much flatter than Antigua with a maximum altitude of 40 metres and an average elevation of 4 metres above sea level. The Codrington Lagoon National Park is a birdwatchers’ paradise complete with a frigate bird sanctuary, and other wildlife that calls the island home include wild boars, red-footed tortoises and various species of sea turtle. The elusive fallow deer is emblematic on the nation’s coat-of-arms.

Offshore there are as many as 73 charted shipwrecks, as well as coral reefs for snorkelling and scuba-diving in water as clear as glass. Deep-sea fishing and flyfishing can be arranged, with foot trails, island treks and camping trips also available. Interesting natural sites include Indian Cave, Darby’s Cave and the idyllic Spanish Point. If you’re interested in the island’s past, a trip to Highland House, the historically important ruins of the Codrington estate, is well worthwhile. You might also like to visit the Martello tower and fort on the south coast. This imposing fortress was not only used for defence but also as a vantage point from which to spot valuable shipwrecks on the outlying reefs.

Cruise tourism continues to be one of the most dynamic sectors of the worldwide leisure industry with state-of-the-art vessels offering all the latest facilities, activities and experiences. The Antigua & Barbuda Government certainly recognises the importance of cruising to our economy and, in collaboration with Antigua Cruise Port, has not only expanded our cruise infrastructure, but has also strengthened our relationships with a number of global cruise partners.

All these efforts are not just increasing confidence in our twin-island nation as a cruise destination, but they are also setting the stage for even greater growth in the years ahead. Antigua celebrated another milestone year in 2025 with cruise tourism recording a 10% increase in cruise calls and passenger arrivals, along with a 20% increase in homeporting operations. Thanks to timely investments in port infrastructure and strategic partnerships, our twin island Barbuda saw a three-fold increase in the number of calls to its shores.

In November 2025, the multi-million-dollar Upland Development Project will begin welcoming homeporting passengers with a new world-class cruise terminal, timed to coincide with the return of P&O’s Arvia. It underscores Antigua Cruise Port’s 30-year concession commitment to sustainable development and community benefit. Antigua's main duty-free shopping areas lie right on the waterfront in our capital city of St. John's. Historic Redcliffe Quay and modern Heritage Quay both house a unique collection of jewellers, craft shops and fashion boutiques. The quaint cafés, alfresco bars and couple of casinos all contribute to the vibrant mood that generally prevails, the area particularly lively when the cruise ships are in port.

The adjacent streets of the capital are well worth exploring too, the colourful Vendors’ Mall perfect if you’re looking for local hats, T-shirts and wraps to take home with you as souvenirs or gifts.

Head north of St. John's and you’ll find three more shopping malls off the Friars Hill Road. Woods Mall has banks, a post office, a travel agency, and the Woods Pharmacy with expert pharmacists. The nearby Village Walk Mall features Harpers for stationary and office supplies, Café Bella for barista coffees and light snacks and a bank. Further along is the Royal Palm Place with outlets including a beauty salon and The Larder restaurant for great sushi. The boutiques of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour in the south of the island cater more to the cosmopolitan sailing crowd. As long as the yachts are in harbour, everything from swimwear and resort wear to local arts, crafts and jewellery can be found. Bailey’s, Crab Hole Liquors, Covent Garden and The Cork & Basket are where to grocery shop in this area.

This quaint shopping enclave on the St. John’s waterfront sells everything from local art and limited edition jewellery to couturière evening wear and freshly-made ice cream. The icing on the cake is the historical vibe – 18th century Redcliffe Quay was one of the main trading places in St. John’s, and it seems fitting that it still is.

Most of today’s businesses are housed in the old sugar and coffee warehouses, their vibrant wooden shutters set off by the crumbling bricks that came to Antigua as ballast in the sailing ships long ago.

JOHN’S AREA The Yard on St. Mary’s Street is busy on ‘Thirsty Thursdays’, C&C Wine Bar in Redcliffe Quay always has South African wine chilling, while North Antigua on Old Parham Road is a popular sports bar. But for a distinctly Caribbean vibe and regular live entertainment, head west to BeachLimerz on Fort James Beach. You can also catch the latest movie releases at Caribbean Cinemas just outside town.

CASINOS St. John's two casinos also serve as entertainment hubs with live music. The Victorian-themed Boardwalk Casino lies on the harbourfront at Redcliffe Quay and offers slots and table games like blackjack, roulette, Caribbean stud, 3-card poker and Texas Hold’em. Colibri’s offers a buzzy cocktail scene with live music in the open courtyard, whilst Abracadabra is a fashionable nightspot waiting to take you into the small hours. Falmouth’s Scullduggery Café is much loved for its chocolate martinis, Los Cabrones is more about margaritas and Mexican theme nights, while nearby Cloggy’s and South Point are sophisticated venues where the cocktails come with prime views of the yachts. Yet even these views are eclipsed by those from Shirley Heights almost 500 feet above sea level. Take a short drive through the National Park to the top of the hill and you’ll come to Shirley Heights Lookout with its historic bar and spectacular vistas over English and Falmouth Harbours. Hyacinth Hillhouse continues in the tradition begun by her grandmother and mother of making coal-pots and other items from the local clay found near Seaview Farm. Originally used to heat the evening meals over hot coals, the earthenware pots are now largely decorative, although many houses still have one in case the gas runs out! The pots are shaped by hand rather than on a wheel and only a handful of people still have the necessary skills. Your support for this dying art is much appreciated.

Let’s start with everyone's favourite Caribbean tipple. Rum! Some of the world's very best are produced right here on the island by Antigua Distillery. English Harbour 5 Year and English Harbour 10 Year Reserve don't just make the perfect sundowners when you’re on-island, but after a busy day back home too. They're also welcome gifts, the miniature collections easy to pack, as are the plastic bottles of Cavalier Gold and White. Kococaribe is also a true taste of the islands.

Our speciality coffees have a distinct flavour of the tropics too. Carib Bean Coffee have been producing delicious blends on a hilltop overlooking Falmouth Harbour for the past 20 years. Ranging from ‘Joy in the Morning’ to ‘Dark & Stormy’, their 15 different varieties use beans primarily sourced throughout the Caribbean and South America.

Our local foodstuffs take full advantage of our natural treasures too. Habanero and scotch bonnet chili peppers form the basis of the award-winning Susie’s Hot Sauce, while no celebration is complete without the spinach dips and spicy sauces of Mariel’s Kitchen. Wadadli Coconut Oil is perfect for moisturising your skin and hair, while Posh Pirate Honey is harvested from our hives on a seasonal basis.

We also boast a vibrant literary scene. Novels written by acclaimed Antiguan authors include A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid and Loving This Man by Althea Prince. Children’s books include Turtle Beach by Barbara Arrindell and To Be A Cheetah by Joanne C. Hillhouse. Brian Dyde’s A History of Antigua tells you all you need to know about our past, while Absolutely Beautiful is a photographic tribute to our twin-island nation by Joseph Jones. We're crafty here too. At the entrance to Nelson’s Dockyard, you’ll discover ladies selling t-shirts, as well as jewellery made from the seeds of our wild tamarind and mimosa trees. Vanessa Ravenello, the owner of Vanessa Designs, delights everyone with her homemade beach bags, tablecloths, cushion covers and children’s clothes.

And you should always make time for the artisans’ market at Bay Gardens in Hodges Bay. A true showcase of Antigua’s creative skills, this island-style village is where you’ll find everything from jewellery to local gin. And don’t even think of leaving without taking full advantage of the ‘unique Caribbean chocolate experience’ on offer at Antigua House of Chocolate!

GEOGRAPHY

USEFUL TO KNOW

Located in the heart of the Caribbean, Antigua is 108 sqm. in size and about 13 miles across. Barbuda is 62 sqm. and lies 27 miles to our north. Tiny and uninhabited Redonda lies 20 miles north-west. There are about 98,000 people in Antigua, 1,500 in Barbuda and only seagulls on Redonda. From Antigua you can see Guadeloupe, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis.

Temperatures range from an average low of 73°F (23°C) in winter to 85°F (30°C) in summer. The trade winds are fairly constant except September. The average rainfall is about 45 inches so there’s constant care not to waste water. The rainy season is September to November, but the showers are usually short.

CLOTHING

Antigua still retains a semblance of formality and swimsuits are limited to beaches. There is a nude beach beyond Hawksbill but this is not generally frequented by residents! Casual clothes are the unwritten rule for dining and trips to town.

LANGUAGE

Although English is the only language ever adopted in the island, you may wonder what some of us are saying when we chat in the local lingo. Everybody sooner or later acquires a few idiomatic phrases such as “No big ting” or “Antigua me come from.”

ELECTRICITY

Antigua has a current quirk. Most hotels operate on 110 volts (same as the US and Canada), but some have 220 volts like the UK, and homes may even have a bit of both. Check before plugging in appliances.

CURRENCY

Our currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and pegged to the US$ at an official rate of EC$2.70 to US$1. The ECCB quotes daily rates for the Canadian $, the Euro, the £ Sterling and other currencies.

CALCULATING COSTS

Hotel rates are cheaper outside the ‘season’ from December to April. Some hotels offer special packages for honeymooners etc. Check with your travel agent or Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association, Newgate Street, St. John’s, Tel: (268) 462-0374/3703/4928. There is 10% service charge (which saves the bother of tipping), as well as a 17% ABS Tax and Guest Levy Tax of US$3 per night for room rates below US$150 and US$5 per night above US$150.

INTERNET & WIFI

Free wifi is widely available in hotels, restaurants and bars, although you may need to request an access code. It is also available in the airport departure lounge. The locally-owned telecommunications company APUA, as well as international companies like Digicel and Flow, operate a 4G LTE network with 100% island-wide coverage. You can also purchase a local SIM card to work on an unlocked phone. Be sure to check your provider's roaming charges first.
