One of those loyal Members honored during AIM LIVE was AIM Chairman’s Club Director Ralph Peterson. His title and legacy was transferred to his son, Brent Peterson, whose recollections of his father became a heart-warming highlight of this event. As Brent shared, “I’m finding joy in many of the things I saw and heard my father talk about now. It has been great to connect with many of my father’s friends in AIM, and to make new friends and help people. God’s provision for my father and his family continues with AIM today.” As AIM’s Future Development Consultant, Nicolas van Rensburg looked beyond the immediate future to the exciting changes that lie ahead for Members. One of the changes will be yearly contests that award all-expenses-paid success trips for business builders who reach benchmark goals at their title levels. Every single Member has the ability to be a winner. CELL FOOD

Supporting a healthy

Immune System By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

We have learned, without exception, that the most valuable asset people have is their health, and the most onerous burden of all is ill-health. Virtually no article on health or immunity written within the last 2 years does not refer to the global effect of the pandemic and the devastating effects it has had on all populations. Now, more than ever before, we as human beings have become aware of our fragility and helplessness in the face of novel diseases and infections for which we have no cure. As a dietitian, I have received, and still do receive, numerous requests on how to boost one’s immunity. It is also important to note that NO single food or supplement will prevent illness or infection. However, there are several key nutrients that have been identified as critical for the production of the various proteins and neurons required to perform specific immune functions3.

What foods are important in supporting a healthy immune system?

Diet is one of the most significant and relevant factors that contribute to the prevalence of health. This process starts in the womb and is affected by a myriad of nutritional, hormonal and physiological components, which in turn affect energy levels and other metabolic functions. Research over the last decade, in particular, has introduced into nutritional research, factors such as genetics, epigenetics and the effects of the gut microbiome (healthy bacteria in the gut), all of which has broadened our comprehension and understanding of the human immune system. Food has been studied, not only from a chemical perspective, but also for the capacity of metabolites produced by the breakdown of food which can influence gene expression. Einstein-type information I know, but all of this research gives us a greater understanding and control of what we, as individuals, can do to enhance our well-being3. With all of this information in mind, I summarised the foods that stood out the most when it comes to optimizing immune health.

CELL FOOD

Try and include one or more of these foods on a daily basis:

Citrus fruits as we all know are rich in vitamin C but also have many other phytochemicals that help the body optimise immunity. Red bell peppers are superfoods for a variety of reasons and being a rich source of vitamin C is one of them. Broccoli is considered to be one of those superfoods that should frequent your plate, if possible, on a daily basis. It is a rich source of beta carotene (plant form of vitamin A), vitamin B complex and vitamin C. Yoghurt is useful for the immune system in that it helps to support the healthy bacteria in the gut, which are crucial for immunity. Almonds are not only a good source of healthy fats and calcium, but they are packed with vitamin E, which like vitamin C, is a powerful antioxidant. Garlic has been known for centuries for its ability to support the immune system. Ginger can help to reduce symptoms of nausea and also has a strong inflammation fighting action. The active compound is called gingerol. Turmeric is used in Western Herbal medicine has powerful inflammation fighting actions. Sadly, not all of us have access to these foods on a regular basis, whether it is due to availability, budget or simply lack of knowledge. We all have hectically busy lives and many of us struggle to ensure our families get the best nutrition ALL of the time. AIM as always seems to ‘come to the rescue’ as many of their products reflect the increasing need for pure, raw ingredients and well-researched formulas and that can bridge the gap.

About AIM Proancynol 2000

Whilst I always support eating foods rather than relying on supplements, I have to confess that AIM Proancynol 2000 occupies a very important place in my nutritional kit. This powerful product has saved me on numerous occasions with all sorts of ailments through the years, both in myself and my family. It is a unique combination of SEVEN antioxidants, namely green tea extract, rosemary extract, grape seed extract, N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, lycopene and selenium. These compounds work synergistically to create a really strong response1.

In conclusion, I reiterate that eating a diet that is full of healthy food is ALWAYS the first prize. However, we all need help as we continue to battle the challenges that face us on a daily basis, whether it is lack of time, availability or cost that drives us to seek other options. Ensuring that we can deliver appropriate and verified information for all our products remains our mantra.

Introducing AIM Customer

One of the most exciting enhancements is the introduction of AIM Customer, a brand-new option for ordering directly from AIM. Also called Favoured Customer, an AIM Customer might be someone who wishes to “try out” the AIM products or isn’t interested in the business opportunity. A key benefit for AIM Customers will be the ability to earn Loyalty Rewards on each AIM product order, which they can then redeem on their next product order placed within 6 months. Customers will pay a little more for AIM products than Members but will enjoy other features including shipping incentives and no membership or renewal fees. How will AIM Customer benefit me? As an AIM Member, you will earn rebates on the BVP of your Customer’s product purchases, the same you earn on a personally sponsored Wholesale Member. The Customer option will provide you with flexibility when promoting and sharing the AIM products with others. And at any time your Customer wants to become a Member, it will be an easy transition.

Other Changes

Smart Start Rewards This incentive will end with June 2022 business, simplifying the overall focus on rebate increases to AIM Members. Leadership Bonuses Effective July 2022, a maximum of 1000 Personal Volume (PV) will count towards Group Volume when calculating the Director Growth Bonus and Director Three-Deep Bonuses (previously it was 3,000 PV).

This helps AIM comply with best practices in the direct selling industry, and benefits Members growing their downline instead of “bonus buying” or “inventory loading.” Preferred Member Promotion Effective September 2022, a total of 600 Group Volume (GV) points within three consecutive months will be needed to promote to AIM Preferred Member title (previously it was 450 GV). Annual Membership Fee Effective July 2022, all new Members will pay a R200-00 initial membership fee. Starting in June 2023, Preferred Member and Group Builder titles will need 600 PV (previously it was 200 PV) points during their membership year to waive a R200.00 annual renewal fee. Wholesale Members will need 100 PV (previously it was 50 PV). If an AIM Member doesn’t renew by the end of their one-month grace period, they will convert automatically to AIM Customer.

HEALTHY ATTITUDE

“BACK TO BASICS”

Lets get

By Ilze van Pletzen - AIM Director

It is because of my story that a passion for health and wellness was stirred within me. To give people hope and strength for their future because one’s past can never determine your future. Fifty one years ago on 11 Feb 1971 a little girl with only 4 toes on her one foot and 2 shoe sizes smaller than the other one was born. Not knowing what her future may hold and growing up with a disability that caused her affected leg to grow significantly slower with no calf muscles and a horseshoe kidney, life as a child was challenging and hard. She was exposed to numerous operations where the simple act of walking was something that needed to be learnt from anew every time. The side effects of all these operations as well as the countless medications administered to her marked her childhood years with great vulnerability and a severely compromised immune system. In her late teens and early adulthood she was also diagnosed with numerous allergies, yuppie flu, Coxsackie virus, cysts on her ovaries, a lump in her breast and consequently needed to undergo an early hysterectomy. The list of health and life challenges however did not end here. In 2010 she had neck surgery due to her birth impairment and in 2015 her husband and love of her life was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Does this sound like the happily 8

ever after fairy tale any girl dreams of? The one where she is swept off her feet and rides off into the sunset with her prince on a white horse? Yet this is my story and I can proudly and gratefully say it is my story of hope. And that is why I can boldly testify that your story, how devastating and disappointing it may seem, it can in fact be a story of hope and inspiration for others. In 2019 I was re-introduced to The AIM Companies and I had an intense desire to know everything and more about this amazing company and their products. Everything just suddenly made clear sense to me and today I have immense gratitude for having had an invitation to attend a talk by a Chairmans Club Member from AIM. Little did I know that this would also be the year that my husband’s cancer would once again return. We were disappointed, disheartened and filled with much fear. However, I decided to face my fears and to gain all the knowledge possible by attending meetings and reading whatever I could find. I started to understand how wonderfully the body has been created

HEALTHY ATTITUDE

and what it needed to build a healthy immune system.

I just shared a post the other day, which says:

There is so much to learn and I have only begun to touch the tip of the iceberg. In this learning and unlearning, I have also found that basic common sense goes a long way. We need balance in our lives and more often than not the scale seems to tip to one side. We need sunlight, exercise, a good night’s rest and the whole foods that God has graciously and generously given us. Of course, many of us live in the fast lane and there is no time for mindful eating and preparing healthy meals. Fast foods, multitasking, working around the clock and minimum sleep is the daily recipe to succeed in the rat race of everyday life. Until one day, all of a sudden and without any warning, you are forced to slow down because of an ache or a pain, some indigestion, bloated-ness and just that feeling of being sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Happiness is the new rich; Inner Peace is the new success; Health is the new wealth; Kindness is the new cool I just loved it, and this is why I love my AIM Garden, making life healthy but also easier. The Garden Trio and FloraFood are our favourite products out of the AIM Garden. Start today with ONE STEP!

This doesn’t have to be your story. I always say, every day is an opportunity to chuck a bad habit and add a good one. Baby steps, and in only a year’s time, you will be amazed how far you have come. This is my advice with the AIM products as well. Start slow and be consistent, and as your budget allows it, add more AIM products. The best investment ever is your health. Going back to basics is not a bad thing, slowing down and focusing on the things that really matter. If you don’t have your health, what are you left with? Medical bills and unnecessary stress! nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

CELL FOOD

Food and

MOOD By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

The link between diet and mood is becoming more and more obvious. People will often refer to the fact that they are irritable or short-tempered simply because they are hungry. The term ‘hangry’ is frequently used by those on a weight loss program, implying they are angry due to hunger! However casual the referrals to foods and mood are, the point is that even clinical data are now joining the dots between nutritional deficiencies, unhealthy food patterns and other similar comparisons when it comes to the prevention and management of mental health1.

From a practical point of view, there are some food habits that will cause low blood sugars or even worse, unstable blood sugars, meaning your sugars spike from high to low throughout the day: •

•

10

Skipping meals, especially the first meal of the day, for which many compensate by snacking on unhealthy snacks for a quick ‘pickme-up’, is the biggest culprit when it comes to spiking and/or low sugar levels. Cutting out entire food groups is another popular trend. Whilst I support having a more plantbased diet, just cutting out meat and/or dairy products for example, without replacing the nutrients provided by those two food groups, such as protein and calcium, not to forget iron, is short-sighted and counter-productive. Deficiencies

Jul - Aug 2022 / to order call 011-675-0477

•

in magnesium, zinc, B vitamins, vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids are just a few micronutrients that become deficient over time if whole food groups are omitted and there is no nutrient replacement thereof. An excess of sugar and refined carbohydrates (like white bread, white rice, pasta) will increase the demand for insulin, thereby reducing the body’s sensitivity to this vital hormone. This will also contribute to spikes in blood sugar levels as described in the first bullet point.

Researchers are also taking a closer look at why diet may influence mental health. Studies are exploring diet’s effects on gut microbiota (organisms in the intestinal tract), neuroplasticity (brain’s ability to modify structure, wiring and function), oxidative stress (cellular damage) and chronic inflammation2. In an article published in Psychiatry (2019) it was stated that recent demonstrations had indicated that the status of the gut microbiota did in fact have an effect on the gut-brain axis and indicated the beneficial effects of probiotics on psychological well-being. In particular products containing Lactobacillus fermentum , L.rhamnosus, L.plantarum, and Bifidobacterium longum were mentioned. This is NOT to imply that such products can be USED to TREAT depression or any other mental disorder, but there was evidence to

CELL FOOD

support that those people with heathy gut bacteria experienced better psychological well-being6. While we still have much to learn about the effects of dietary patterns on mental health issues, evidence suggests that eating a healthy diet can have a protective effect. In fact, many believe that good nutrition is as important to mental health as it is to physical health.

Here are a few tips on How to improve your mood with food: • •

•

•

•

• • •

Eat at least 2 – 3 nutritious meals within a 12 hour ‘awake’ period Choose less refined sugars and eat more whole grains for example, whole grain bread instead of white bread, brown or wild rice instead of white rice and yellow maize instead of white maize Include protein at each meal, such as meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans) a variety of foods, especially foods of colour such as pumpkin, butternut, spinach, peppers and blue berries Include omega-3 rich foods, like oily fish, olive oil, avocados and raw nuts and seeds in the diet on a daily basis Manage and maintain a healthy weight Drink plenty of fluids, especially water Get regular exercise – at least 150 minutes per week

Following a healthy eating plan can keep you energized and help you to feel your best. While good nutrition is an important component of your

emotional well-being, it is not a substitute for proper medical care and treatment. If you have concerns about your mental health, talk to your health care provider.3.

In summary, what AIM products can we take to help us manage our moods and cognitive well-being better: AIM ProPeas will ensure a healthy supply of protein, especially if you have opted for the vegan or vegetarian route. AIM Fit n Fiber will help to increase the fibre content of the diet and therefore slow down gastric emptying which will, in turn, slow down the speed that carbohydrates are released as sugar (glucose) into the blood. A highfibre diet goes a long way to help keep blood sugar levels stable. AIM FloraFood will provide healthy bacteria if you feel that your gut microbiota needs support. AIMega as always to improve the intake of essential fatty acids, which are ALWAYS critical to all aspects of brain and mental health.

CELL FOOD

The importance of a

Healthy Gut By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

If I was asked to give only ONE health tip that I had gleaned from my 44 years in clinical practice, I would say this: LOOK AFTER YOUR GUT! In my experience, most people, doctors and other medical practitioners included, tend to take the health of our digestive systems for granted. This is probably because the gut can, and is designed, to take care of itself, much like a well-run corporation. However, as in a large business, when one department is not working well, it eventually will impact the efficacy of another one. Separate divisions in any enterprise are not islands, as they rely on the efficient functioning of all the other departments around them and a fault in one of them will eventually be manifested in the other. Such is our digestive system. The entire digestive tract is not only designed so we can put food in our mouths, chew it, swallow it and transport it to the stomach and small intestine, where the nutrients and other good stuff can be absorbed and then into the large intestine, from which all the indigestible remains are excreted. The gut is now considered to be a complex microbial ecosystem, which impacts many of our cellular pathways including detoxification, immunity, brain health, hormonal feedback mechanisms, neural pathways and many others. The gut and the brain are therefore intricately connected through a complex network of compounds released by the

microbiota in the digestive tract, to nerve cells and pathways that enable us to respond to different stimuli.

How can we ensure that we maintain a healthy gut?

In order for the gut microbiota to function optimally, there has to be sufficient prebiotics, which are the compounds that help to support the healthy bacteria as well as the probiotics, which are the bacteria themselves. Prebiotics include both soluble and insoluble fibres that are found in whole unrefined grains as well starchy vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut, pumpkin, beetroots and carrots AND those indigestible fibres that are found in green leafy vegetables. Dietary trends that encourage ‘keto-type’ diets, such as the very low carbohydrate, high-fat diets promoted by many endocrinologists and physicians, may impact the health of gut microbiota in a negative way if insufficient of these vegetables are not eaten on a regular basis. If you do follow a low carbohydrate or keto-type diet, then you will need to supplement with fibre and one of the best recommendations I can make is AIM Fit n Fiber.

CELL FOOD

AIM FloraFood provides a combination of 3 of the most common species of healthy bacteria in the gut. Probiotics facilitate the production of many important nutrients such as vitamin B12, B6 and vitamin K. I have had several patients over the years that seem to ‘live’ with either chronic constipation or diarrhea and never do anything about it. Sadly, BOTH conditions will destroy the gut if they are not adequately treated. If people rely on chemical stimulating laxatives to make their bowels move, then they will end up with a lazy, enlarged large intestine that will NEVER function without this stimulation. The longer they take these kinds of laxatives, the more they will rely on them, develop tolerance (the dose will have to be continuously increased) and a condition called an atonic (has no muscle contraction whatsoever) megacolon (large floppy bowel), in which the fecal mass collects and sits until evacuation through chemical stimulus or surgical intervention.

Another problem in westernized diets, is the impact of all the artificial colorants, flavour enhancers, artificial sweeteners and other additives, such as emulsifiers and stabilizers which are present in all processed foods. These chemicals can disrupt hormonal regulation, not only in the gut but in several metabolic pathways. I CONCLUDE in repeating, please look after your GUT!

Chronic diarrhea will ultimately lead to multi-nutrient deficiencies as the transit time in the gut increases, and there is less opportunity to absorb nutrients.

MANAGING RESOURCES

Regulatory environment for

Health Supplement & Complementary Medicines By Elsa Havenga - Regulatory Affairs Pharmacist (B.Sc Pharmacy) There is considerable legislation pertaining to both foodstuffs such as BarleyLife, Health Supplements such as AIMega and Complementary Medicines such as Proancynol 2000. The legislation includes - The Medicines and Related Substances Act, 101 of 1965, The Complementary and Alternative Medicinal Substances (CAMS) Guidelines on Complementary Medicines, and Health Supplements, and the Regulations Relating to the Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs. There is also the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), Act 68 of 2008 which came into effect on 1 April 2011. This Act has far-reaching effects on products sold to consumers.

The Act identifies the responsibilities that are imposed on suppliers to make sure that the interests of consumers are protected during transactions. Amongst the nine consumer rights listed in the Act, the following are especially important to take note of: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Fair and responsible marketing. Fair and honest dealing. Disclosure of information. Fair, just and reasonable terms and conditions. Fair value, good quality and safety. The right to hold a supplier accountable.

MANAGING RESOURCES

SAHPRA (South African Health Product Regulatory Authority) is responsible for assuring that all medicines are safe, effective, and of good quality. Therefore, the requirements for these products (Health supplements and Complementary Medicines) have been made stricter as some of the active ingredients in these products may cause adverse reactions, especially some of the botanical ingredients. SAHPRA is amending and enforcing these strict requirements on an on-going basis as they also learn how to manage these products. All the above-mentioned legislation and guidelines affect the way in which AIM Africa, with the support of AIM International conduct the marketing of our products. The importation of many AIM products into South Africa has become increasingly difficult over the past five years.

We have to comply with the requirements immediately, to be able to import the products, therefore it is not always possible to timeously inform our members and their clients of these changes. One of the many new regulations requires the addition of a Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) to each unit to be released by Port Health when entering South Africa. These PIL’s include many new label requirements which include the use of the terms like patient and medicine. This is similar to AIM products sold in Australia which are labeled as Listed Medicines and in Canada which are labeled as Natural Health Products. The labels in these countries also have risk statements and verbiage that is more restrictive.

AIMing for

Vitamin

Most people are aware of the vitamins they need to stay healthy. The ones that immediately come to mind are the first letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D and E. For the most part, getting these essential nutrients primarily from your whole-food intake is the way to go. One vitamin that may not immediately jump to the front of the nutrient line is fat-soluble K, named after the word koagulation from the German language. Vitamin K is required for coagulation, the formation of blood clots, wherein liquid blood thickens into a gel, an essential process for healing from injuries. Along with blood coagulation, vitamin K plays a cofactor role for the proteins involved in bone building, calcification prevention and cell-function regulation. Unfortunately, your body does not store much vitamin K, so it is rapidly depleted. All of the functions that require this nutrient can be affected if you do not get enough from your dietary intake. Green leafy vegetables give you the predominant form of vitamin K1 , also known as phylloquinone.

Then there’s vitamin K2 as a range of forms called menaquinones, which are found in fermented foods, dairy and other animal products. K2 is also synthesized by your gut bacteria. AIM provides exceptionally healthy ways to supplement your intake of vitamin K1 from two plant-based powders: BarleyLife and CoCoa LeafGreens. Each 4-gram serving of BarleyLife delivers 94 micrograms of vitamin K1, just one of the nutritious benefits of the juice powder of young barley leaves. The recommended two 4-gram servings of CoCoa LeafGreens gives you 84 micrograms of vitamin K1 from its powder combination of leafy greens and cocoa beans. Given that you should get most of your vitamin K and other essential nutrients from plant sources, both BarleyLife and CoCoa LeafGreens fit the bill with supplemental whole food.

CELL ENVIRONMENT

FOOD

Avenue

The AIM Companies™ has been providing supplemental nutrition since 1982. A year after its inception, the Healthy Cell Concept™ was published to highlight five avenues to good health. Well-being begins with taking care of your cells, the building blocks of your body. Emphasizing a wholesome, dietary intake in conjunction with the use of AIM nutrition, food is one of the five avenues that comprise the Healthy Cell Concept. The nutrition you give your body affects the function, growth, repair and replication of the trillions of cells in your body.

Cell Renewal

Your body replaces cells on a regular basis. Within a span of 80 to 100 days, 30 trillion cells get replenished, amounting to a new you cell-wise. If the cells your body replaces are created on fuel from foods that are mostly fast, packaged, processed or red meat-based, then it’s an unhealthy case of you are what you eat. On the other hand, nutrition from plant-based, whole foods as close to their natural state as possible contribute to the replication of healthy cells. Daily servings of a variety of nutritious, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, healthy sources of protein and fats all provide wholesome fuel for your cells and the energy they produce. The overall result of strolling down a wholesome Food Avenue most of your life is that you are more likely to experience good health. AIM nutrition contributes a supplemental wholesomeness. Increasing your intake of nutrients and phytonutrients from AIM’s selection of whole-food powders and natural health products is a lifestyle choice that supports healthy cells.
