“A good Scout makes a good contributor to our goal of building a Bagong Pilipinas.” This was emphasized by His Excellency President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in his speech during the opening program of the 18th National Scout Jamboree at Camp Pintados de Passi, Barangay Sablogon, Passi City, Iloilo. The President highlighted the importance of Scouts in promoting leadership among the youth and in nation-building. “With its unique blend of education, adventure, and fun. Scouting continues to inspire our young people to become active and productive members of society. Each of you here is called upon to help shape our future and create a better and more sustainable world,” he added. Moreover, the President also reminisced about his Scouting experiences with his father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. “I have attended other Jamborees when I was much younger together with my father and so this is a familiar experience for me as I have been a Boy Scout for a very long time," Marcos said. The President added that scouting was very important as Jamborees were the mother of all activities in a Scout life for it reminded them of the enduring legacy of the Scouting movement in the country. By the end of his speech, he officially opened the event and raised the 2024 National Scout Jamboree flag which was witnessed by at least 35,000 participants across the country.

SCOUTS JOIN MAIN MODULES, SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Before his official declaration of the opening of the 18th NSJ, the President was sworn in a formal investiture ceremony as the new National Scout Chief. The investiture was under Section four of Republic Act 7278 which says that “The President of the Philippines shall be the Chief Scout of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines.” Marcos’ presence marked the first appearance of a Philippine President in 25 years since former President Fidel V. Ramos attended the 11th National Scout Jamboree in 1998 at Clark Field, Pampanga.

During the eight-day Jamboree, Scouts participated in eight main modules and special activities wherein the application of real-life skills and knowledge was put to the test. Among the main modules were the Crossroad of Culture where Passinhon culture and heritage through Pinta Lawas and dance demonstrations of the Pintados de Pasí dance steps were showcased. In the Main Module Two, Navotas National High School eagle Scout Andrew Emmanuel Robles of Navotas City Council shared his reflection, “Scouting is for everyone. Being a Scout is being part of the World Scouting Organization where inclusivity is practiced. Everyone is accepted regardless of beliefs, religion, ethnicity and race.” Meanwhile, Scouts incorporated different special activities like the Passi City Tour and Expidetion, Better World Village: Scouts for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), HAM Radio: Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree On The Internet (JOTI), Learn a Trade: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, Keeping Scouts Safe from Harm, Road Safety Awareness Advocacy and Extension Scouting: Diversity and Inclusion.
