An Update From Alex Mayer, MP For Dunstable And Leighton Buzzard Constituency
Banking Hub at the Quadrant:
The location of Dunstable’s new banking hub has been confirmed as the Quadrant. I pushed for a town-centre location so am delighted by the news. Residents will be able to make withdrawals and deposits, check balances and pay bills. Local businesses who use cash will also benefit. Labour’s election manifesto set out plans for 350 banking hubs nationwide. In the first month I was elected, I pressed the Treasury on banking hubs and was always determined Dunstable would get one. Work to fit out the premises is due to begin later this month. Doors are then set to open by the Summer. It will be staffed by Post Office workers.
Budget:
Measures announced in the Budget are starting to kick in. As people went back to work after the Christmas break there was no annual increase in rail fares (for the first time in 30 years). Prescription charges are also frozen. This April 6,700 workers locally who earn the Living Wage will see another pay rise and the State Pension will increase by 4.8%.
Animal welfare:
I think treating animals well is the mark of a civilised society and this is something I work hard on in Parliament. So I’m really pleased about important steps the Government is taking. There is decisive action to end the use of tiny cages for hens, where each bird is confined to a space little larger than an A4 sheet of paper. Snares are being banned which cause extreme distress and pain to the animal caught in them and can lead to a slow, lingering death. Alongside this, the Government is taking steps to end the cruel practices of puppy farming and the use of electric shock collars. Plus I’m delighted that this Labour Government is finally finishing the job on fox hunting and ending trail hunting which is in my view a smoke screen for cruel and illegal activity. I was also proud at the end of 2025 to be named as Cruelty Free MP of the Year.
Potholes:
I know potholes remain a major frustration. I’m
disappointed but not surprised that the Council has been rated as “needing improvement” on sorting out local roads. I will continue to press Central Beds for clear progress on repairs. The good news is that government funding for road maintenance for our area has risen to £9.6 million – the largest settlement ever.
A5 Bypass litter:
I intervened with Ministers after Highways England and the council kept passing the buck on responsibility for litter on the A5 Dunstable Northern Bypass. I’m now told litter-picking will take place in February.
Priory House: I was delighted to join the Mayor to see the next stage of work begin. This is about protecting local heritage and boosting Dunstable’s visitor economy.

Plus, attacking a shopworker will become a standalone criminal offence - a change I promised White Lion Retail Park staff I’d push for.

I welcome the Government's £750,000 boost in funding for public health across Central Bedfordshire to support services including school nurses and schemes to help people quit smoking. It is the biggest real terms increase in nearly a decade. The Government has also announced over 6,000 additional emergency NHS dental appointments for the Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes area. While rebuilding the system won’t happen overnight, I am encouraged that the Government is taking these desperately needed first steps.
Fixing Potholes:
Potholes remain a major issue. The Government has increased funding to Central Bedfordshire to over £9.6 million, the equivalent of more than 20,000 extra potholes being filled. However unfortunately the Council has chosen not to commit to ensuring the full uplift in funding is directed towards road repairs. I am disappointed by this. It was clearly not the intention of government, not what residents want, and I fear could make future such grants less likely.
In this edition we explore what a “life limiting illness” is…A life-limiting illness is an incurable condition that shortens a person's life, meaning they are likely to die from it, though they can still live actively for years. While often called "terminal," the term emphasises that the illness cannot be cured and will eventually lead to death, but palliative care can manage symptoms and improve quality of life throughout the illness, not just at the end. As a charity our constitution states the definition of a life-limiting illness “is anyone diagnosed with a life-limiting illness such as, but not restricted to Cancer, Leukaemia, Parkinson’s, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure. Dementia”. When we receive referrals our Volunteer Manager assesses each one to establish the right level of support required, the frequency of visits etc before introducing a volunteer to the family. We have a breadth of experience within our volunteer network with varied employment backgrounds. Our volunteers have a wealth of lived experience and provide great comfort to many offering great conversations and ability to signpost further for additional help and support. Our volunteers are all trained in supporting clients and their carers, spend time each week engaging in conversation, listening and undertaking some activities that maintains a level of normality for those being supported. It could be going out for coffee, accompanying them to an appointment, visiting their favourite place ie Dunstable Downs (always a favourite!). This is a service that is provided free of charge to anyone living in Dunstable, Houghton Regis and surrounding areas. I need a home!
Simon de Montfort
This is a most vexing period of medieval history where some historians consider that Henry was a real mess and unable to govern properly; whilst others consider that he was basically a nice chap and a good king who instigated - deliberately or accidentally - many articles of Westminster government which still persist today. In like contrast, some historians consider Simon de Montfort to be little more than a thug (like his father) whilst others consider him to be the founder of so much parliamentary practice which still persists today. He is considered to have “changed England and the English forever”.
Henry 3rd came to the throne in 1216 following the death of his father, King John. He was a 9 year old child king to start with but later, from late teenage onwards, started to take control himself.
But his barons and nobility had had their own way for a decade or more and were reluctant to give up their power and importance. It transpired that Henry - although a deeply pious and nice chap -- was essentially a weak king who, for example, had been persuaded to initiate some rather disastrous military actions in France. He, most certainly, wasn’t a warrior king like his grandfather. However in 1236, he married the French Eleanor of Provence. This caused much friction in that she brought many French nobles to her court (the Savoyards) who, together with the French Lusignan nobles left over from the court of John’s wife, Isabella of Angouleme, meant that there were a dozen or more “French foreigners” who continually went out of their way to oppose Henry’s, and England’s,
wishes - much to the intense annoyance of the English “barons”.
This unhappy state of affairs continued until 1264 when the English barons had finally had enough and went to war against the monarchy. They were led by the charismatic Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort, who had viewed the effect of royal government with increasing dismay.
But who, and what, was Simon de Montfort ?
He was a French nobleman, born in 1208, who had grown up with the idea that an English title and associated land had been stolen from his family by King John - and he wanted that the title of Earl of Leicester should come back. He was the son of another Simon de Montfort - an outright thug - and had helped his father fight battles during the Albigensian Campaign against the Cathars of S. France in the early 13th century. So he had a military background and was used to fighting. He arrived in England in 1229 hoping to reinstate himself as Earl of Leicester, and during negotiations with Henry they became good friends. They were of similar age and, because of his military experience, helped Henry considerably to quell riots in England and was also sent to Gascony in SW France to put down a rebellion in what was virtually the last part of France still held by England. He ended the rebellion - but was considered to have done so quite harshly.

However, he was granted the title Earl of Leicester in 1239.
In 1238 he had married the king’s sister, Eleanor, who had originally been married at age 9 but was now widowed. Their marriage was approved at first by Henry - but not by the barons who insisted that they should have been initially consulted. Henry later agreed with the barons and the friendship with Simon evaporated. The following years saw Simon becoming increasingly at odds with the monarchy since it refused to grant political (parliamentary) power to those outside of the nobility - it was a government ruled absolutely by those sitting at the top of society.
In 1264, the bad blood between Henry and Simon reached its zenith in the form of the Baron’s War which was enacted, first, at the Battle of Lewes. This was won by Simon’s forces together with the capture of both Henry and his son, Edward, and was followed immediately by what has sometimes been seen as the first English parliament where non-aristocratic property owners from the counties were allowed into Westminster - ie the members of Parliament weren’t just aristocrats. Simon, however, was decidedly anti-Semitic (like so many others at the time) and expelled all Jews from seats of government and commerce. But worse was yet to come later under Edward.
After the war, a tournament between supporters of the Earl of Gloucester and the sons of the (earlier) Simon de Montfort was to be staged at Dunstable - as recorded in the Dunstable Annals. But it didn’t happen.
Somehow, Edward managed to escape and he amassed another army of royalist supporters who met, and heavily defeated, Simon’s forces at Evesham in 1265. This battle was a most bloody affair and Simon’s body was completely mutilated and hacked to pieces. It was a most gruesome affair! It also ended the life and influence of Simon de Montfort ; and Henry returned to the throne. His last years were spent resolving the issues of this terrible civil war. He died in 1272 to be succeeded by his son, Edward 1st, who is noted as being a very powerful king but who also continued some of the parliamentary practices instigated by Simon de Montfort.
However, Henry’s long reign (1216 to 1272) had been full of controversy, friendship and bitterness, conflict and war. It is true to say that the 13th century had been anything but peaceful.

Choose maintainable materials
Opt for materials that resist stains and are simple to wipe down. Hard floors such as vinyl, laminate or sealed hardwood are easier to clean than carpets, which trap dust and allergens. When it comes to worktops, wood and natural stone may look good, but quartz or solid surfaces are less porous, making them resistant to staining and easier to sanitise.
Design your space smartly
A clutter-free layout reduces the number of surfaces where dust can settle: so avoid overly intricate architectural details like deep mouldings or ornate trims. Choose sofas and cabinets with legs so you can easily hoover underneath and consider integrated cupboards and shelving which keep items organised and off of the floor.
Ditch the dust collectors
Heavy drapes trap dust, as do cushions, rugs and throws, so choose machinewashable fabrics. As for what goes on shelves, select large statement pieces or keep your collection in a designated display cabinet.
Trust the tech
Finally, we may all fear the robots taking over humanity, but before they do, why not utilise them? Robot hoovers are a great way to keep floors consistently clean (provided your floor is clutterfree) and there are mop versions available now also. If you’re not ready for an automation invasion, you can select a self-cleaning dishwasher or oven instead.

For vegetable gardeners, it’s the moment to start planting for the season ahead. We all know the usual suspects: peas, broad beans, lettuce, and carrots, yet if you’re looking for something a little different this year, March is the perfect time to
experiment with vegetables you may not have considered before.
Kohlrabi, for example, is a wonderfully versatile brassica. It looks a little alien with its swollen stem, but its taste is mild, sweet, and crunchy. That makes it excellent raw in salads, or gently steamed. Then there’s the humble celeriac, which is a bit of a forgotten gem. Richly flavoured, it stores well and adds a subtle, earthy note to soups and stews.
For those who enjoy a bit of culinary adventure, try sowing some scorzonera or salsify. Often called ‘black root’ or ‘oyster plant,’ these long, slender roots have a delicate, nutty flavour. They’re hardy, relatively low-maintenance, and a real talking point when you serve them at the table. Even a few clumps tucked into a border of early flowers
can brighten the plot and give something unexpected to harvest.
Spinach and Swiss chard can also go in now under cover, and don’t overlook early varieties of beetroot - their tender leaves can be used in salads long before the roots are ready to harvest. Enjoy!

See Jupiter in a Telescope:
Unmissable to the naked eye, bright Jupiter makes for primetime viewing in a telescope during February 2026. Still relatively close following opposition in January, Jupiter’s high altitude in the sky offers good opportunities for sharp steady views of the planet and its moons in a telescope at a sociable hour!
Telescope aperture is key. The bigger the aperture, the more light you’ll gather and so the bigger and brighter your view of Jupiter, and the higher the resolution of that view. As a minimum I would recommend a 150mm aperture telescope. Together with a 10mm eyepiece you’ll easily see Jupiter’s cloud belts. With a 250mm aperture telescope the same eyepiece reveals detail in those belts, including the red spot storm system.
Watch Sirius Sparkle:
Sirius is the brightest star in our night sky. It is best seen in the early and mid-evening hours nestled to the lower left of Orion the Hunter.
Sirius is a very distinctive star, flickering bright white but flecked every now and then with different colours. You may catch hints of blue, green, yellow, orange and red at times, even with the naked eye – a product of refraction of starlight through Earth’s turbulent atmosphere.
Catch Dazzling Venus in the West After Sunset:
From mid-March onwards look towards the west for a bright ‘star’ low to the horizon after sunset. This is Venus, the brightest planet in our night sky. Its appearance heralds the start of some amazing views of the Evening Star during the next few months.
