We are so excited for our In Bloom journey in 2026. Following our amazing success in 2025 where we were crowned overall winner of Anglia in Bloom, Dunstable has been selected to represent the Anglia region in this years RHS Britain in Bloom Large Town category. An honour and a privilege to do so and the hard work has already started.
Working in partnership with Dunstable Town Council, Dunstable in Bloom volunteers will work with local community groups, residents and schools to showcase the excellent work and special projects that are being worked on. Judges will visit the town in late July early August and will be wowed by what they see.
Right now though, spring has sprung with the mass of daffodils and crocus bulbs across the town. Thank you to all the residents who helped plant over 50,000 bulbs in 2025.

Pilgrims flock to Dunstaple
It’s difficult to imagine hundreds of visitors coming specifically to Dunstable in order to experience what was on offer; but that was definitely the case in medieval times.
For starters, it must be realised that Dunstable (or Dunstaple as it was then) was situated on one of the busiest crossroads in England so people were coming and going constantly.
The word pilgrim simply means traveller but it has usually been extended to mean a traveller to a holy place. This was the medieval meaning - especially when associated with pilgrimage to the Holy Land. People in those days were driven by the fear of purgatory, ie that period of judgement after death when one’s past life is scrutinised; and dependent upon the findings, so you either went upstairs to everlasting peace and happiness in Heaven - or downstairs to perpetual torment and misery in Hell. It was a very powerful fear and its message was greatly endorsed by the Church so as to keep people in order.
But there were degrees of absolution ranging from total redemption of all your sins if you went to the Holy Land, down to only a few brownie points if you stayed at home but made some token local gestures. In other words, there was a pecking order of places to visit and shrines at which to worship with Jerusalem at the top. But if Jerusalem was out of the question, then the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury was top dog in England followed by places such as York, Westminster, St Albans, etc. It would take many days travelling to be able to tick off all the places on your bucket list so somewhere like Dunstaple had a constant stream of pilgrims; perhaps going on to St Albans, then to Westminster
and, afterwards, to Canterbury (a la “Canterbury Tales” by Chaucer).
But in 1207, King John (together with the Prior Richard de Morins) arranged for the translation of the bones of St Fremund (the pious son of the Mercian king, Offa?) to Dunstaple. At last, it enabled the town to be on the pilgrimage trail in its own right and meant that pilgrims, rather than merely passing through the town, actually came to stay and to worship here. It also meant that they spent lots of lovely money in the form of food and drink, accommodation, souvenirs, badges (as proof of having visited) and even the purchase of (questionnable) indulgenciespardons for sins - ie more brownie points.
At the time, it was necessary for any self-respecting cathedral/abbey/priory - and Dunstaple Priory was very respectable - to have some form of relic or bones of a saint. It has been shown that many of these relics (eg a piece of the True Cross - often just a piece of old wood) and bones of saints (often pigs or sheep) were completely false and that they were displayed purely as a financial ruse. But the ordinary person didn’t know that they were being conned and were desperate to believe that they were, in some way, easing their passage through purgatory. However, the ordinary man (rather than woman) could attempt to absolve himself completely and, at the same time make a bob or two in the form of spoils or loot, by joining a Crusade. These ran for upwards of two centuries from 1095 and Dunstaple was a stopping off point for armies marching towards a rendezvous. meeting point for Knights Templar. These were “warrior monks” who protected pilgrims as they attempted to make their perilous way to Jerusalem through hostile country .
The Priory played a considerable part throughout the whole of this period by embracing pilgrims en route to such as St Albans and beyond - or pilgrims coming to Dunstaple only. Crusading armies setting out for the Holy Land might also use the church facilities. For the Priory, it could be both very profitable but also extremely expensive at times since the rules of the Augustinian order stated that an Augustinian house (such as Dunstaple) must offer free accommodation to poor travelers. However, it was always hoped that some donation or gift would be given in place of a downright charge; and three days was the limit of stay!
Poor travelers would be put up at the Almonry on South Street (built 1208) but higher class travelers and pilgrims could be accommodated at the original Priory House.
As a final note, it is interesting to record that Dunstable sent its own band of pilgrims to the New World when the preacher, Zachary Symes, together with some of his supporters, escaped the religious tyranny of Archbishop Laud and Charles 1st in the mid 17th century. How strange it is that in many of the New England states of America, there are so many towns with English names given by “escapees” from victimisation. And it’s interesting to note that there is a town on the border of New Hampshire and Massachusetts called Dunstable - a direct result of Zachary Symes’s religious persecution.

Artwork provides another opportunity to avoid over-
coordination, while a mix of floor lamps, table lamps and ceiling fittings creates atmosphere too.
At the end of the day, homes are much like us, as people – gradually changing, flexible, and made better by our imperfections!
Setting Up A Sumptuous Summer
The most successful summer gardens are rarely the result of frantic effort later on - they are built quietly and methodically in spring, so let’s get going!
The most valuable work at this time of year happens below the surface, with soil preparation the foundation of summer success. Loosening compacted ground, removing perennial weeds and adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure improves drainage, nutrient availability and root growth.
Healthy soil also retains moisture more effectively, meaning plants cope better during dry spells and require less feeding and watering as the season progresses.
Spring is also the ideal moment to think about structure. Shrubs, climbers and perennials planted now have time to establish strong
root systems before summer heat arrives, making them more resilient and less reliant on constant attention.
Mulching is another simple task which will suppress weeds, lock in moisture and gradually improve soil health as it breaks down. It also acts as insulation, protecting roots during sudden temperature spikes.
Lawns benefit from early care too. Light feeding, scarifying and aeration in spring strengthen roots and encourage even growth, helping grass withstand drought and heavy use later in the year.
And of course, early sowing is well worth the effort. Many summer-
flowering plants and vegetables benefit from a head start, whether sown under cover or directly into warming soil.
Ultimately, a thriving summer garden is rarely about doing more; it is about doing the right things early. A few thoughtful decisions now can deliver months of colour, structure and enjoyment with far less effort later on.

Watch Jupiter & Venus Double Dazzle as Evening Stars:
Two bright planets occupy the evening sky after sunset this spring. In April Jupiter continues to shine bright high up in the constellation of Gemini. It’s an easy catch with the naked eye appearing brighter than any of the stars. Venus is even brighter but much lower down in the twilight sky towards the west, and only visible for an hour after sunset. In May Jupiter drops lower in the sky to the west to join Venus, which by now lingers later into the spring night sky. Through the month the two planets get closer to each other making for a spectacular ‘double evening star’ event by month’s end.
Catch the Lyrids Meteor Shower:
The nights of 21st and 22nd April this year see peak activity for the Lyrids meteor shower. Expect to catch 15 - 20 shooting stars per hour radiating out across the sky from near the bright star Vega in the east. Best time to look are in the hours between midnight and dawn on both dates.
Take in our Marvellous Moon during the Artemis II Lunar Flyby Mission:
Scheduled for launch between 1st - 6th April this year is the historic Artemis II lunar flyby mission. Four astronauts embark on a 10-day journey around the Moon. For a real-time view of the Moon during the mission look out for a full moon on the night of 2nd April. It’ll then rise later each night, waning into the early morning sky as the mission progresses.
