The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

Celebrating 40 Years of Compassion:

The Legacy of Hospice at Home Volunteers

For four decades, a quiet revolution of kindness has been unfolding across the doorsteps of our community. This year, Hospice at Home Volunteers (HAHV) proudly celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking forty years of providing essential respite care and emotional support to those facing life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Founded in 1986 by Faith Tourney and David Self. The charity was born from a simple but profound necessity: the need for high-quality care within the comfort of one's own home. While medical professionals manage clinical needs, HAHV fills the vital "human gap." Our dedicated volunteers provide companionship for clients and, perhaps most importantly, a "breather" for primary caregivers who are often physically and emotionally exhausted.

"Our volunteers are the heartbeat of this organisation," says the charity’s chair of trustees, Liz Jones. "Whether it’s sitting for a few hours so a carer can go to the shops, or simply being a listening ear during a difficult afternoon, these small acts of service create a massive impact on the quality of life for our clients."

The landscape of end-of-life care has changed significantly since the mid-eighties, but the core mission of HAHV remains the same. The charity has grown from a small group of concerned citizens into a robust network of trained volunteers, all while remaining an independent organisation that relies heavily on community donations and local fundraising to keep its services free of charge.

As we at HAHV look toward the next forty years, the focus remains on reaching more families in need and recruiting the next generation of volunteers. To celebrate this milestone, we are hosting a series of local events during the year to thank the supporters who have kept their doors—and the doors of their clients —open since 1986.Here’s to forty years of dignity, forty years of support, and forty years of coming home.

Contact us today hello@hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk or call 07709131514 to see how we can help you.

I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.

APPLEDOWN RESCUE DOG OF THE MONTH

Pretty Lacey is a petite lurcher who has just turned two years old. She has an affectionate nature and a fabulous pair of ears! Like all dogs of her type she doesn’t need as much exercise as people think! A couple of lead walks a day and she will then be h she would appreciate the chance to do some zoomies in an enclosed area from time to time. We think Lacey could live with a male dog pending introductions but not cats. Lacey needs a well-fenced garden and any children in the family must be 7 years plus.

For more information please see her album on our Facebook page or email the kennels. Visit our website for details about adoption and an application form. Viewings are by appointment only. Information about ways to donate to support our work can be found o

The Story of Middle Row

Most of us who live in Dunstable are sad to see the boarded up windows and the general state of delapidation which affronts us as we walk past Middle Row. What visitors must think, I hate to guess. But it hasn’t always been like this and Middle Row has, at many times in its past, reflected the considerable wealth which Dunstable has experienced in its long history. Alas !, not the case at present. Let’s go back to the very beginning and realise how Middle Row gradually came into being. We know that King Henry 1st founded our town in 1107 both as a local market and as an international business centre ; and that the reason for doing so was because of the excellent position it enjoyed on the crossroads of two of the very few long distance roads at the time. What is more Dunestaple also had an excellent hinterland for the nurturing of various animals (for wool, meat, leather, etc) and for the growing of cereals and crops with the capacity of turning such produce into food and many of the other necessities of life.

So, and apart from any international considerations, Dunestaple was perfectly equipped to be a local and regional market in its own right - and the market was held in the area made by splitting South Street (ie High Street South) into two separate sectionssimilar to today.

Business thrived on two fronts :- the “ordinary” market for townsfolk and local villagers, and the “international business centre” acting on a separate plane - exporting (mainly) wool and importing fine cloth, wine, and other “luxury” goods not normally available in England.

King Henry was Lord of the Manor of Dunestaple and everyone was happy with the extra kudos which royal patronage brought. Also, the building of a great Augustinian Priory had been started which further added to the growing importance of the town. Initially, the local market (on what we now call the Square) consisted of produce either laid out on cloths or rushes on the ground, or on simple trestles or more substantial stalls.

However, and shortly afterwards, the sale of produce and the behaviour of tradesmen was strictly controlled following the introduction of bye laws in 1221 - the first ever issued in England (eg “Butchers may not cast blood or filth in the street to the hurt of their neighbours” ; “Traders must carry away their booths the same day as they erected them” (this law still stands) ; “Bread made for sale at a farthing shall be sold at the same price, and in like manner when four gallons of ale are worth 1d” (interesting to know that bread is now something like 1500 times more expensive and ale something like 2500 times ! It’s called progress).

A = Market place and future Middle Rents (Row)

Gradually, traders requested that more permanent structures be allowed (rather than having to erect and dismantle them each day). By now, the Prior had become Lord of the Manor and he was prepared

to agree to these requests providing that the traders paid additional rental. Since the booths were in the middle of South Street, they were known as “Middle Rents” and have come down to us as Middle Row. Booths then became lath and plaster constructions; then wooden buildings with workshops and storage rooms behind “encroachments” (still seen at the rear of shops today). Then upper storeys

added until, eventually, resulted.

NB Some of the roof timbers along present day Middle Row have been dated back to the 13th century; and three shops with particularly steep medieval roofs can be seen if you stand in Ashton Square. Over the centuries, these premises have been all manner of shops (two goldsmiths in the 13th century show how prosperous Dunstaple was then) as well as different inns and pubs. All have cellars dug into the chalk - one was even the town gaol! Ghost stories abound with stories of poltergeists; footsteps heard in an upstairs room ; an escaping highwayman ; two black slaves ; children’s faces at an upstairs window ; a slaughterman being gored by a bull, etc, etc.

A description of Middle Row by a former editor of the Dunstable Gazette reads :- “The motley collection of shops and businesses known as Middle Row has changed and grown in a highly higgledy-piggledy fashion over the centuries and now has a particular charm - albeit in need of a great deal of tender loving care” To which I give a heart felt Amen. But can anyone come to our rescue? Sadly, many people in Dunstable - who have no interest in, or sympathy with heritage - consider that the best solution for Middle Row would be to knock it down. Financially, they might well be justified in their opinion : but such an act is akin to deliberately making an iconic animal extinct - and such animals cannot be brought back. Neither can ancient buildings.

Why eating local is often best.

One of the main reasons is transportation. Modern food supply chains can stretch across continents. A supermarket apple might travel thousands of miles before reaching a kitchen table. The energy used in transporting food contributes significantly to carbon emissions. By contrast, food grown locally usually travels far shorter distances, meaning lower transport-related emissions.

Seasonality is another important factor. When produce is grown naturally during its peak season, it generally requires fewer artificial inputs. Out-of-season food, however, may require heated greenhouses or long-distance transport from warmer climates, both of which increase environmental impact.

A Love of Local

Local farming can also support biodiversity and land stewardship. Smaller regional farms are often more likely to grow a variety of crops rather than large single-crop systems. This diversity can encourage healthier soil and provide habitats for insects, birds and pollinators.

Freshness is another advantage. Food that travels shorter distances typically reaches shops more quickly after harvesting. That means fruit and vegetables often retain more flavour and nutrients.

Economic benefits also play a role. Buying locally grown food supports regional farmers and rural economies. Money spent at farm shops or markets tends to circulate within the local area rather than flowing through long international supply chains.

So in practical terms, eating locally can be as simple as choosing seasonal vegetables, visiting a farmers’ market or checking where produce has been grown. These small choices can help reduce food miles while strengthening local agriculture.

The idea behind local food is not just about geography. It is about reconnecting the food we eat with the place and season in which we live.

World Cup 2026 Watch Guide

A continent-spanning World Cup - bigger, broader and more ambitious than anything football has seen before.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in history, and in every sense. For the first time, 48 teams will compete across three North American host nations, namely the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tournament embraces 16 host cities stretching from Vancouver to Mexico City, and opens on June 11th at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the ‘hosts’ will take on South Africa.

The conclusion of 104 matches comes on July 19th in New York.

The good news for teams is that two thirds will progress from the group into the knockout stage. From 12 groups of four, the top two in each section will be joined by the eight best thirdplaced sides in the last 32.

For British supporters, the spread of venues matters almost as much as the draw. England’s group campaign will take them to Houston, Boston and New York/New Jersey.

Scotland, meanwhile, play twice in Boston, then finish with a glamour tie against Brazil in Miami.

The venues themselves are part of the attraction. Supporters can expect giant modern arenas synonymous with NFL, where the television spectacle, glitz and pizazz will be everything we have come to expect.

Conditions, though, will vary sharply. Mexico City brings high altitude, while places such as Miami and Houston are likely to offer heat and humidity. Canadian venues and northern US cities should be cooler. That variation may influence everything from team selection to recovery times, especially in a longer tournament where squad depth could become decisive.

For viewers back home, the North American setting means unusual viewing times. Some matches will fall into lateevening slots, while others will drift well past midnight – all will be shown across terrestrial TV channels (BBC and ITV).

Above all, though, this is a World Cup designed to feel vast. More teams, more matches, more travel, more fans and more noise. It is not just football crossing a continent, but football remaking itself on a grander stage.

THE WORLD CUP: THE BIGGEST AND THE BEST

More than 6.5 million fans are expected to attend matches, with over a million international visitors heading to the United States alone.

Economically, FIFA projections suggest the tournament could generate over $30billion in output in the US, support around 185,000 jobs, and deliver a wider North American impact approaching $40billion.

Looking Up!

Bedfordshire’s Night Sky

June and July 2026

Catch a Planetary Trio Late Evenings in June:

A planetary feast is served up during the short nights of summer this year. Early June sees Venus and Jupiter combine as an irresistible visual spectacle over the northwest horizon. They are closest together on the nights of 6 - 12 June. Joining the dazzling duo is the elusive planet Mercury, located a little way to the lower right. Mercury is much dimmer than Venus and Jupiter, but still visible to the naked eye –and certainly visible in binoculars as a pinkwhite ‘star’. Best dates to look for Mercury are 6 – 15 June. Late evening on 16 June sees a thin crescent moon sit atop Mercury. On 17 June a crescent moon sits directly underneath Venus for an awe-inspiring evening finale!

Watch Saturn Return to the Morning Sky:

Planet hunting then continues in the morning sky ahead of sunrise with the return of the ringed planet Saturn. Find it low in the east as a yellow-white ‘star’ beneath the square of Pegasus from about 2:30am in mid-June. On 8 July it sits to the lower right of the moon.

Have Binoculars? Spot a Comet!:

Towards the end of July a comet is expected in the pre-dawn sky. Comet 10P/Tempel 2 might not be visible with the naked eye but it should be viewable in binoculars. Best time to look is on the mornings of 25 and 26 July at about 2:30am – 3am. Look directly south about 15-degrees above a flat horizon to find it as a smudgy glow.
