The Mayflower Society Annual Report 2024
- 2025
Our Mission
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants is committed to research on the lineal descent of the Mayflower Pilgrims and education about the Pilgrims who traveled aboard the Mayflower in 1620. The Society provides education and understanding of why the Mayflower Pilgrims were important, how they shaped western civilization, and what their 1620 voyage means today and its impact on the world.

A message from Governor General Lisa Pennington

Our objective during this term has been to leave a legacy of the Pilgrim’s story—which is your story! Every American should know about their priceless inheritance of self-government, working together with people of disparate backgrounds and beliefs, and creating and enforcing their own laws. Our first goal has been to tell our Pilgrim story to our members and the public through new educational videos, our magazine, Notes From the Boat to every member, and through the creation of an educational center at the Mayflower Meetinghouse. Our second goal has been to encourage more descendants to join our Society and stay members by increasing incentives, reducing costs to apply, and increasing the benefits to membership. We are a family!
First, I would like you to welcome Cheryl Soares, our Acting Executive Director who has succeeded Mark Schmidt after his retirement in June. Cheryl has worked for nearly 4 years as Mark’s #2 person, so there will be no break in service for our members. She is a terrific leader and our staff loves her, as I do! She is a member, and she is tireless and passionate about our Society. Her ancestor, Stephen Hopkins, would be proud!
I am thrilled to report that thanks to Cherie Lawson and her Scholarship Committee, we now have our scholarship applications online and her team has streamlined the process so that we have had even more people apply this year. Giving scholarships also tells our story to the next generation, and no child who wins one will ever forget it. Thank you, Scholarship Team!
We are also well on our way to creating a library of videos on our YouTube channel which will tell our Pilgrim story. I was pleased to hear that many member societies are showing them at their meetings, in their schools, and at their community meetings. I also hope you enjoy them at home. The objective is to make the Pilgrims real, show their humanity, and show what their actions and sacrifices accomplished. These were ordinary people doing extraordinary things that influence our country even today, and every American should know it.
Our second challenge has been to deal with the expected decline in applications lineage matches since 2020 and the escalation in costs since 2020. Our goal is to raise incentives for membership and decrease costs and other barriers to join and stay in the Mayflower Society. We have created a profitable Research Service to help members who need genealogical help for a fee. Demand has been strong, and we are actively hiring more researchers for this service. This new business line also helps us offset the costs of the Research Center.
We also are dedicated to increasing incentives for people to join and stay members. Once you’re in, we’re not done! We have added hotel, Plymouth Patuxet Museums, Storyworth and My Heritage member discounts, as well as provided free will and estate planning for our members in the form of FreeWill. More planned giving opportunities are under development for our members which will maximize their tax benefits. I am so pleased that many of our members have used FreeWill, and over 30 members have left bequests to our Society totaling over $5.3M! This means our society will have stability and strength for the next century and beyond.
I am also pleased to announce that we have completed the Mayflower House project. It now looks great and is a good example of how we can manage a significant project well, as we are about to launch into an even bigger project, the Meetinghouse. A related accomplishment was the completion of this rehabilitation project with no attrition of our endowment funds. This represents very responsible management. And I would like to take an opportunity to thank many members and member societies for their donations to achieve this worthwhile result, including FGG Jane Hurt for spearheading the effort. The House is sounder and is more beautiful than it has been for 100 years.
Finally, I am so pleased that we are finally beginning work on Phase I of the construction of the Meetinghouse side entrance, the gift shop and the sprinklers for the interior. We have raised over $10M for this project, including $5M in the last year and a half. Our thanks to Project Manager David Peck, who is a member and is offering his services for free. Thank you, David. I am grateful to Marty Beerman who suggested that we hire a professional capital campaign company to help us raise he rest and get the Meetinghouse construction done in the next year. I was traveling non-stop, so Marty, Cheryl Soares and Bart Henson selected and interviewed several companies to see if they could fit our needs. We hired CCS, a capital campaign company out of Boston, who is helping us to assess whether and how much we can raise to complete the construction all at once. If we get sufficient pledges, we will complete the Meetinghouse construction in the next year.
Thank you
Lisa H. Pennington Governor General

A message from Executive Director Cheryl Soares

Thank you for the opportunity to share some of the highlights from this past year at The Mayflower Society.
One of the biggest changes for me and our staff was the retirement of our Executive Director, Mark Schmidt. I am deeply grateful for the years we worked together… and for all that Mark taught me.
I also want to thank our Governor General and the Executive Committee for giving me the honor of serving as Executive Director of an organization I am both a member of… and deeply passionate about.
Over the past year, The Mayflower Society has remained active in the local community. We once again participated in America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration, which is streamed live and rebroadcast on Thanksgiving Day. We’ll be taking part again this year—and I hope you’ll have a chance to watch.
We’ve welcomed a new group of volunteers to give tours of The Mayflower House, which is open on the first Friday of each month from May through October, and during cruise ship visits.
Members can also arrange private tours when in town. We continue to host private events—such as the Mass Mayflower Book Club, America’s Hometown Poet Laureate programs, and Back Roads of the South Shore gatherings.
Even the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse saw special activity this year—when Pilgrim historian Caleb Johnson chose it as the venue for his wedding. The ten Meneely Bells in the tower have been restored and now play songs that enrich the community—beautifully highlighted in our Governor General’s videos on our YouTube channel.
We are also focused on adding value to our members. This year, we introduced FreeWill and discounts for Storyworth. Many of us have wished we knew more about our ancestors’ personal stories—Storyworth helps preserve those stories, and I believe future generations will be grateful for them.
We’ve taken meaningful steps to open more doors for discovery—expanding our Research Services for members and for potential new members who need help identifying a Mayflower line or solving a genealogical puzzle. We’ve also made our Research Center more accessible, so that when visitors arrive in Plymouth, they can immerse themselves in the journey of uncovering their family stories.
It’s been a joy to see visitors leave not just with facts and records—but with a deeper connection to the past, and to the people who came before them.
We are fortunate to be the stewards of the Mayflower Meetinghouse. I am honored to work with a Capital Campaign company, CCS, and with a Mayflower Team to raise the funds needed to ensure this building stands the test of time—and to move toward making it an educational center, where the many Pilgrim stories can be told in a building, on the land, where our ancestors walked.
It is truly a privilege to work with all of you… and to be part of this organization that I feel so connected to.
Thank you
Cheryl Soares Executive Director
A message from Treasurer General Bart Henson

Efficiencies achieved and underway:
• Rightsized and reorganized the Research Center
• Converted to electronic handling of applications and fees. Digitization via Easy App is well underway
• Streamlined The Mayflower Quarterly Magazine preparation, content, and printing
• Lowered staffing cost with the use of volunteers as docents and for inputting recent applications

Awards 2024 - 2025

Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award
The Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes excellence and dedication to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) and is presented to an individual for their extraordinary and extensive service.

The recipient of the 2025 Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award is Cherie Snow Lawson, a dual member of the Oklahoma and Kansas Societies. Lawson has been a devoted volunteer for the GSMD by giving educational speeches about the Mayflower Pilgrims to many community organizations and by serving as 2023-2026 Chair of the GSMD Scholarship Committee when the scholarship application went online for the first time in 2025, making it easier for applicants to submit their scholarship applications.
In addition, Lawson reached out to every applicant to assist them with the application process, and she also revised the application and the adjudicating process which increased the number and quality of the applicants.
Congratulations to Cherie Snow Lawson on receiving the 2025 Governor General’s Distinguished Service Award!
Pilgrim Academic Research Award
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Pilgrim Academic Research Committee is pleased to announce the tenth annual Pilgrim Academic Research Award recipient, Blaine Bettinger.
Blaine Bettinger, Ph.D., J.D., is a professional genealogist specializing in DNA evidence. In 2007 he started The Genetic Genealogist, one of the earliest blogs on the topic.
Blaine is the author of The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy, and is or has been an instructor for genetic genealogy courses at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR), Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and Virtual Institute of Genealogical Research.
Congratulations to Blaine Bettinger on receiving the 2025 Pilgrim Academic Research Award!

The Pilgrim Academic Research Award is presented at the Governor General’s 1620 Club Banquet each September.
Governor General Commendation Awards
