ART - COVER STORY

The cobbled backyard in Alt-Sachsenhausen is somewhat reminiscent of Harry Potter's Diagon Alley, where magically gifted boarding school pupils buy their magic utensils. Ancient half-timbered facades, pubs and alleys that you lose sight of in narrow bends. But then there is the stylish architectural wonder that is Kleine Rittergasse 11 – the creative source of inspiration for a new era in the apple-wine-loving quarter. ‘Der kleine Mann mit dem Blitz’ is the name of the gallery event room on the ground floor of the residential and studio building, above which the Kombinatrotweiss agency has its offices. Its managing director, Sventlana Jakel, is something of a young grande dame of illustration. With her team, the trained fashion designer is extremely successful in placing around 60 illustrators and motion designers for advertising, beauty, fashion, TV and much more. They supply Germany’s biggest names and companies with art.

‘Tatort Fashion’ (‘Crime Scene Fashion’) is the title of „Tatort Fashion“, titelt die Ausstellung, die für einen Abend in the exhibition, which will be shown in the gallery for der Galerie gezeigt wird.

The job of illustrator is regarded as a dream job in Germany, but German companies are still reluctant to use this form of communication compared to their European counterparts – but that is exactly where the trend is heading. Kombinatrotweiss has been specialising in this since the end of 2014 and the agency has been in existence since 2002.

ART - COVER STORY

Herz Alle drei

Illustration as an art form north of the Alps began when monks in the monasteries of the Middle Ages painted small mythical creatures and fanciful initials in books made of parchment. With the printing of books came the woodcut, which, in turn, was itself displaced by copperplate engraving around 1600. More modern techniques followed. When photography was invented, it was regarded almost as a mortal blow to graphic illustration. For a long time, the medium became a niche phenomenon. Even today, illustrators are often limited to children's books and their work is seen as pure entertainment. Yet illustration can do so much more – it makes complicated contexts understandable, interprets and explains them with or without words. And it works completely internationally, too. “I’d like to see customers here have even more confidence, and create a moment of surprise for the end user,” says Sventlana Jakel. She has a keen eye for trends and says: “Alongside lettering, i.e. calligraphic letters that have been in great demand for some time now, flat illustration is also a big trend that is just beginning to emerge. It does without realistic depictions of textures and three-dimensional elements; everything is completely flat and in strong colours. It’s all about the viewer’s quick grasp of the content. We have just designed the ‘AHA’ Out of Home campaign (‘Together against Coronavirus’) for the German Ministry of Health. What is also in demand are animations that can be done in a short space of time and more cost-effectively than a live action film. Thanks to digitalisation, there’s still a lot to come in the future. There are already illustrations that look like 3D and seem to float in the air, so that you think you could walk through them.”

Many illustrators are lone warriors, people who work alone and at home. This is also how Matthias Schardt, an illustrator represented by Kombinatrotweiss, sees himself. In his studio in the town of Wuppertal, he works at two tables: one is for his digital illustrations and animations and the other is for his analogue creations. It is very much evident that his influences lie in comics. “As a child, I simply devoured the ‘Gaston’ comics; André Franquin was a fantastic draughtsman."

Thai illustrator and interior designer Pomme Chan, who supplies the Frankfurt agency with artwork from Bangkok, takes a different approach, also stylistically. She founded the first illustration agency in her home country and opened her own design shop "Whatif", for which she designs wallpaper and carpets. She starts “from the heart” by drawing by hand, and then finalises her analogue designs digitally on a computer. She often creates typographic illustrations with floral and animal motifs, which have already made it onto the front pages of American Variety and the New York Times Magazine. “I’m currently working on two book covers, a new wallpaper collection and a permanent exhibition for the Thailand Art Biennale 2021,” she says. Many German illustrators, including freelancers, are well employed at the moment. "Coronavirus is an opportunity for the industry," says Svetlana Jakel. Instead of photo productions, which are difficult due to travel and contact restrictions, firms are increasingly opting for graphic visualisations. What the agency boss still sorely misses in 2020 is the Berlin event ‘UPdate – Salon for Photography and Film’. "This is where creative agencies and their clients meet, an important and inspiring industry meeting place.”

A request comes in and the illustrator begins. “Every enquiry is different, and they range from death to technology and beauty via inheritance. You always have to think your way into completely new subjects, which makes it all very exciting,” says illustrator Fritzi Stuke about her collaboration with Kombinatrotweiss. Vector illustration is precisely her thing. ”It’s my style. It also allows me to respond quickly to new motif requests and to do some fine tuning.” Naturally, illustrators are also interested in doing freehand designs. 5

ART - COVER STORY

Some, such as the illustrator Lapin, have a huge fan base here. The Frenchman, who has made Barcelona his adopted home, fills vintage sketchbooks he discovered at flea markets with beautiful, lovingly drawn images – people, places, plants, everything is captured on paper by this urban sketcher with the aid of biros, watercolours and coloured pencils. He then scans his drawings and assembles them on the computer to create digital collages, many of which are published in books. "Dinosaurs are one of my favourite subjects." Dinosaurs? “I’m currently working on a new self-published sketchbook, a selection of dinosaur bones that I have sketched in natural history museums all around the world, mixed with dinosaur toys made of plastic that I found at flea markets. It’s going to be fun!”

Ekaterina Koroleva made her first attempts at painting on corn flake packets. As a child, she had drawing lessons; later, she studied graphic art and lived in Rome. Today, the Berlin-based illustrator, who grew up in the USSR, feels most at home in the editorial for beauty and fashion. She works as a freelance illustrator for renowned fashion and lifestyle magazines and beauty companies. For THE FRANKFURTER, she designed a wonderful cover and makes our winter issue an art collector‘s item.

THE FRANKFURTER Cover & Skyline

ART - COVER STORY

Photos: Ekaterina Koroleva, Thomas Neukum

What inspired your illustration for THE FRANKFURTER? “I wanted the cover to be immersed in a wintery atmosphere and, in line with the female protagonists of previous issues (editor’s note: Frankfurt's club culture), it was obvious to me that I should create a self-confident silhouette that radiates success, glamour and femininity. Against the Frankfurt backdrop, she shines in a nightly glow that blends with the wintery shimmering ice crystals and the lights of Frankfurt nightlife.” How would you describe your style? “My work includes sketchy drawings made with pencil, watercolours and ink, which I then make into collages with contrasting colour surfaces and shapes. These techniques complement each other very well and develop a beautiful dynamic together. While my watercolour surfaces may seem uncontrollable, the pencil tames them and gives them a form, and also vice versa. The female silhouette is the leitmotif of my work. I just adore what is unfinished, what is raw and what has to be held together by the strong coloured forms so as not to create too much restlessness". You say your influences are, in particular, Russian fairy tales and children's books of the old USSR, which are seen as splendid illustrations of the old narrative tradition. “That's right; they shaped my way of illustrating. I very much respect the works of the famous fairy-tale and saga illustrator Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942) and the painter Natalija Goncharowa (1881-1962), who is seen as part of the Russian avant-garde.”

ART - COVER STORY

Photos: Ekaterina Koroleva

What’s the best thing about your job? “The freedom to do whatever I would like to do and to be able to completely self-actualise myself – and make a living from it. Another dream would be to draw on an interior space or the façade of a small house. I would like to enter three-dimensional space with the art of illustration.” What would you advise beginners? “I’d advise them to work hard and spend the first one to three years putting all their energy into establishing their own ‘brand’. Keep an open mind, be consistent and listen to your gut rather than chasing trends or other artists. A ‘work in progress’ is more important than final goals; this makes the job lively and varied and you remain down-to-earth and emotionally stable when setbacks come. Experience shows that diligence also helps artists to develop more than just talent.”
