Back to School

Back to School Project Bangladesh has a very good network of schools at all levels. Children can receive education at very little or no cost. Yet there are families who do not see the opportunities that education offers. They focus on short-term profits and allow children to drop out of school to work in the household or on the farm. That is why The Choice founded the Back to School Project together with a manufacturer in 2007.

Change the future

The local manual recognized extreme poverty in his village of Gonopaddi, an agro-based and underdeveloped district on India’s electronic border. Most children in this region are drop-out students. Many families do not have enough to eat. The lack of education leads to this poverty because they cannot sustain themselves in the long run. Help was needed to change the social and economic situation.

Because of the great results, more and more students wanted to participate and today there are more than 200 students, 20 teachers and computer training programs for the basic courses. Students up to and including class 4 are taught by students of the higher class. Pupils from group 5 come to the main building to attend lectures given by regular teachers.

The Back to School Project noticed these problems and created a program aimed at dropout students. The philosophy of the program is to transform each child into their own change agent. It is not limited to learning; it is also aimed at boosting one’s potential. Good practice, helping others and living a healthy life are all part of the project. The goal is to instill self-esteem and value of education in children so that they can influence the economic scenario and engage in social welfare. The Back to School Project has started a huge development; some group 1 students who started the program ten years ago are now studying at the university. These original school leavers aspire to become doctors, engineers, ministers or parliamentarians rather than work in the household or on the farm.

Success of the project

The first year of the Back to School Project started with twenty students with only two teachers. Unlike mainstream schools, there were incentives to go to school: free eggs and biscuits and extracur-

Together with the manufacturer, The Choice helps these children to transfer money themselves. Today there are no real school leavers in Gonopaddi and all children are included in the Back to School Project. They have become their own change agents with the ability to transform the Sherpur district for a brighter future.

In the poverty-stricken village of Gonopoddi, most students learn English by memorizing exercises from their textbooks. After twelve years, most of them still cannot understand and read English. The Back to School English Club was established to help these students – ranging from grades six to grades eleven – develop the English language. Two months after the start of the club, the students have let go of their fears and are fully committed to learning English, driven by their enthusiasm to overcome illiteracy.

The Choice catalog has been a well-known and major player in the promotional market for many years. In the coming years, with a view to sustainability, we will also be clearly visible online in addition to the catalogue.

This The Choice is printed on FSC certified paper. This environmental certificate fits within our philosophy of taking responsibility as a company for our role within society and the living environment.

The Choice focuses on economic, social and living environment needs. Sustainability is an important pillar of the articles in The Choice. Our products are tested for longevity. The origin of materials is transparent and origin and fair working conditions are taken into account. Stedman has a line made from recycled material.

But it’s not just our products where we implement sustainability. It also continues within business operations. Our aim is to install solar panels on the business premises by 2024. Since last year, there have been charging stations in front of the building for electric cars and we use green energy.

The Choice has its own large distribution center where used plastic is collected and recycled. Cardboard is reused and our employees think about the use of non-reusable materials.

Since 2023, The Choice has been affiliated with Stichting UPV Textiel. This foundation was established in response to the Decision on Extended Producer Responsibility (UPV Textiel) in the Netherlands, which holds importers and textile producers accountable for collection, recycling, and reuse. Over 650 companies have joined this collective initiative, currently representing more than 70% of the market. The foundation collectively organizes the collection and processing of discarded textiles to efficiently, effectively, and affordably meet the UPV obligations.

From 2026, we will be taking an important step towards sustainability. A large part of our collection of T-shirts and polo shirts, including our bestsellers from the cotton/elastane collection, will switch to organic cotton and/ or recycled polyester. In doing so, we are consciously investing in a better future for our customers, for the people who make our clothes, and for our planet.

Why organic cotton?

Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides and artificial fertilisers. This means healthier soil, cleaner water and better working conditions for cotton farmers. Organic cotton is just as comfortable and pleasant to wear as regular cotton, with the added bonus of the positive vibe behind it.

The power of recycled polyester

By using recycled polyester, we give plastic bottles and textile fibres a second life. This reduces waste, saves raw materials and significantly lowers CO2 emissions. The new shirts delivered in 2026 are literally made from recycled materials, without compromising on quality or sustainability.

Softshell Jackets: PFC- and fluorine-free

Our softshell jackets are now completely PFC- and fluorine-free. These chemicals were traditionally used for their water- and dirt-repellent properties, but they are harmful to the environment and health. We choose safer alternatives that are just as effective, so you stay dry and comfortable without hidden dangers to you and nature. In addition, they are made from recycled postconsumer polyester (often abbreviated as rPET or PCR polyester) made from waste material that has already been used by consumers and then collected. This type of recycled polyester is a more sustainable alternative to new (virgin) polyester, which is made from petroleum.

Lemon & Soda T-shirts and polo shirts are produced in factories in the Far East. These manufacturers show time and again that they have their affairs in order in terms of working conditions, safety and quality standards. They are audited annually on various points by various certification organizations that then issue certificates to the

manufacturers.

All sweaters -except the Everywear- from Lemon & Soda are produced in Portugal. Since Portugal is a member of the EU, there are still a lot of sustainable and ethical rules to comply with as an EU country and therefore a lot of rules, laws and standard are already framed.

The main advantages of producing in Europe:

1. The EU has strict environmental rules and standards for textile production, including restrictions on the use of harmful chemicals. There is also a focus on designing products that last longer and are recyclable.

2. Fair working conditions, within the EU there are strict rules regarding working conditions

3. The EU invests in technologies and systems for collecting, sorting, reusing and recycling textile waste. Separate collection of textile waste is mandatory since 2025 in all EU member states.

4. Production closer to home (within Europe) means shorter transport distances. This leads to a lower carbon footprint through reduced emissions from ships, trucks and planes.

5. The focus on sustainability and circularity stimulates the development of expertise and innovation within the EU, which can keep the textile industry competitive at global level.

Textile production in the EU contributes to a more responsible and sustainable industry, both environmentally and socially, and supports the transition to a circular economy.

Cotton USA is a trademark of the Cotton Council International (CCI). CCI is a non-profit trade organization that promotes American cotton fibers and cotton products worldwide. Gildan has a Cotton USA license, most items are of Ameriak grown cotton and contain more than 50% cotton.

Bureau Veritas is a global B2B service provider. Their mission is to reduce clients’ risks, help improve performance and provide innovation support. They also facilitate clients to meet challenges related to quality, health, safety and welfare, environment and corporate social responsibility.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an international label that sets requirements for both the production of the fibers and their further processing into garments. At least 70 percent (Made with organic) or at least 95 percent (Organic) of the garment must consist of organically produced materials.

The OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an internationally recognized certification and the most important health mark for textiles. The articles and materials, such as yarn and buttons, are tested for harmful substances and meet the comprehensive safety and quality standards and are therefore not harmful to health.

Amfori BSCI is an international association that unites international companies and supports members to improve working conditions in their supply chains. They do this through tools, training, audits and risk assessments, and by encouraging members to work together to address common challenges.

An overview of different yarn

Single Jersey

Jersey, or tricot, is a fine and elastic knitting technique. The fabric is comfortable and stretchy. Single jersey is knitted in a right-left weave, with a v-pattern on the front of the fabric. So it has a clear front and back.

Elastane

A synthetic fiber that is exceptionally elastic. It differs from other synthetic fabrics because it is more elastic but at the same time stronger. Without tension, the fabric returns to its original shape. It is light in weight and the elasticity in elastane offers plenty of room to move, without losing fit.

Combed (organic) Cotton

After carding, the yarn is passed through a combing machine to remove the short fibres. This gives the finished fabric a silkier feel, making it softer, more resistant in the wash and more hardwearing. It ensures smooth surfaces for decoration access.

Ring-spun Cotton

Ring-spun cotton T-shirts are thinner, smoother and softer than regular 100% cotton T-shirts. It feels like it has been washed dozens of times. This is because the yarn is spun in such a way that it produces stronger, longer and thinner cotton strands.

Ring-spun Combed Cotton

Undergoes a final step before the fabric is woven. The fibres produced during combing are thinned and twisted, which produces a softer, more resistant yarn that is less susceptible to shrinkage. Ideal for high-quality printing.

Piqué

This technique creates a sturdy, breathable fabric with a small relief. Piqué is widely used for polo shirts. Traditionally piqué fabric was made only from cotton, but nowadays it is mixed with synthetics to create more strength. The difference with jersey is that piqué fabric is a bit firmer and thicker.

Recycled Polyester

Recycled polyester offers the same high-quality characteristics as conventional polyester but with a smaller environmental footprint. The production of recycled polyester requires far less energy, causes significantly less CO2 emissions and helps keeping plastic waste from going to landfills and our oceans.

ACTIVE-DRY° Polyester

This fabric dries quickly, has excellent moisture management, feels soft and is very elastic. Therefore it is perfectly suitable for sports and functional clothing. The airy fabrics are very moisture-wicking and provide a pleasant feeling, even during intensive training. ACTIVE-DRY° polyester not only offers great wearing comfort, but is also ideal for various textile finishes.

Bird-eyelet Mesh

Birdseye mesh fabric is a breathable textile commonly used in sportswear. With an open structure, it ensures good air circulation, moisture regulation, and quick drying. Lightweight and durable, it is often employed in sports shirts and pants for maximum comfort during intense activities.

Interlock

A knitted cotton, also called double jersey, because two layers are knitted together. Unprinted, both sides are therefore the same and there is actually no right or wrong side. After printing, of course, but the inside feels just as soft.

Nylon

Smooth, moisture-wicking and very durable fabric, making the perfect choice for athletic and outdoor clothing. Nylon is one of the lightest textile fibres and at the same time one of the strongest. Thanks to its high elasticity and moisture-wicking properties, nylon textiles offer great wearing comfort and excellent freedom of movement.

Viscose

A high-quality material made from the natural raw material cellulose. The fibre is very soft to the touch, moisture absorbent and very breathable. It can be both glossy and matt and thus take on the look of wool, silk or cotton. T-shirts with a viscose share drape fluidly around your body, creating a premium wearing-comfort as well as an elegant, flattering silhouette.
