MANAGER’S MESSAGE Happy October Sundial Residents! We are officially into the Fall months now. It’s so hard to believe how fast this year went by. The State Fair was here and gone, temperatures are starting to drop, and the leaves are starting to turn their beautiful colors. As of October 1st, we have 57 days until Thanksgiving, 70 days until our Holiday Dinner, and 92 days until the beginning of a whole new year. October’s extended forecast shows a wonderful month of pleasant weather with highs in the 50’s towards the end of the month. We look forward to all the decorated homes for fall this month. When the holidays come rolling in, Sundial residents really have a knack for decorating! Now that we are in the darker days of the year, we would like to remind residents to please use a flashlight if you are out walking at night and it’s always good to keep your porch lights on at this time of year. According to AI, a single porch light on all night is very inexpensive, especially if you are using modern lighting. A modern LED 8W-10W costs about $0.015 per night, $0.45 per month, and about $5.45 per year. We want to thank Mr. Bill and his Karaoke Singers for entertaining us on September 26th during our Baked Potato Potluck. The singers, featuring a couple of our residents, have beautiful voices. We thank you in advance and will share pictures of the day in our November newsletter. We listened to Mr. Bill’s singers, now it’s time for you to have fun singing karaoke. Terry Lowells will be here on Friday, October 23rd between 5pm – 8pm, for a fun time of karaoke. Terry Lowells is a professional DJ and has been doing Karaoke for 30+ years. He’s had many Sundial residents ask him if he would set up a night here at Sundial, and we are happy to have him this October. If you’re looking for a fun night of singing and laughter, mark your calendars for Friday October 23rd. And don’t forget we have our 4th Annual Halloween Potluck Party and Costume Contest, Wednesday October 28th starting at 4:00pm. The Costume Contest starts at 5:00pm. We will be having our favorite: Ghoulosh (Goulash). We look forward to all the potluck dishes our residents will bring for our once-a-month Feast! As always, we want to send out a Special Thank You to All our Volunteers who help within our community from helping at our monthly functions to helping residents in so many ways. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS & REMINDERS We are having a Craft Fair on Saturday, October 10th from 9:00 – 1:00 in the Sundial Center. If you would like a table, please stop by the office or contact the office at 503-363-6234. We are looking forward to all the crafts our residents will be selling. We sure have very talented residents. This will be a great time to purchase upcoming holiday presents for loved ones. There will also be a SCAT Bake Sale. Come out and join the fun singing Karaoke with your fellow Sundial residents on Friday, October 23rd between 5pm and 8pm. Bring a dish, bring your voice, and bring some laughter to the evening. We would like to remind you that the holidays will be here before you know it. We have a lot of events planned in the Sundial Center from October to December. If you are planning on reserving the Clubhouse for a family event or any type of special event, please make sure to reserve early. With the Fall weather approaching, trees will be losing their leaves. Please make sure to rake up leaves from the trees in your yards. Please call for a Yard Bin at 503-585-6374.

Slow Cooker Cranberry Pear Cider INGRE D IENTS • 10 pears quartered • 1 orange quartered • 2 cups cranberries • 4 cinnamon sticks • 1 whole nutmeg • 16 cloves • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup can sub brown sugar • 8 cups water FOR GA R N ISH (OPT ION A L)

• sliced oranges • sliced pears • cranberries • cinnamon sticks

INSTR UC TIO N S 1. Push the cloves into the orange rind. 2. Add pears, orange, cranberries and spices to a large slow cooker/ crock pot. Fill with 8 cups of water. 3. Cover and set to low for 4-5 hours. 4. About one hour before it is done mash all the ingredients with a whisk or potato masher. Continue to cook for one more hour. 5. When finished cooking, strain all solids with a fine mesh sieve. Rinse out slow cooker. Return to strained cider to slow cooker. Pour in the maple syrup and stir to combine (Can add more or less to taste, or use brown sugar instead of maple syrup). 6. Garnish with orange and pear slices, cranberries and cinnamon sticks.
