St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s life is filled with legends that are just as colorful as the parades we see today. Here is a short story of the man behind the holiday:

The Shepherd and the Ship

Before he was a saint, Patrick was a 16-year-old boy named Maewyn Succat living in Roman Britain. His life changed in an instant when Irish pirates raided his village, kidnapped him, and sold him into slavery in Ireland. For six long years, he worked as a lonely shepherd on the Slemish Mountains, where he turned to prayer, sometimes over 100 times a day—to survive the isolation.

One night, Patrick heard a voice in a dream telling him, “Your ship is ready.” Taking a massive risk, he escaped and walked 200 miles to the coast, where he found a ship bound for Britain. He eventually made it home, but he couldn’t forget the people of Ireland. He had another vision of the Irish calling out to him: “We beg you, holy boy, to come and walk again among us”.

The Return and the Fire

Patrick spent years studying to be a priest and eventually returned to Ireland—this time by choice. One of his most famous “showdowns” happened on the Hill of Slane. It was a day when the High King had forbidden any fires to be lit until a sacred pagan bonfire was started. Patrick, in a bold move, lit his own massive Easter fire first. When the king’s druids couldn’t put it out, they warned the king that if the flame wasn’t extinguished, it would burn in Ireland forever.

The king was so impressed by Patrick’s courage and eloquence that instead of punishing him, he gave him permission to continue his mission.

interesting St Patty facts

St. Patrick’s Day is full of surprising history and myths. Here are some of the most interesting facts about the man and the holiday: The Man Behind the Myth

• He wasn't Irish: St. Patrick was actually born in Roman Britain (likely Wales or Scotland).

• His real name wasn't Patrick: He was born Maewyn Succat. He changed his name to Patricius (meaning "father figure") after becoming a priest.

• He was a slave: At age 16, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates and forced to work as a shepherd in Ireland for six years before escaping back home.

• Never officially canonized: Because he lived in the 5th century, before the formal Church canonization process existed, he is a saint by popular acclaim rather than official decree.

• Snakes never existed in Ireland: The legend of Patrick driving snakes into the sea is likely a metaphor for driving out paganism. Scientific evidence shows Ireland has been snake-free since the Ice Age.

SCAM ALERTS- Never provide your personal information or bank account information to someone you don’t know or to anyone that calls you on the phone. The scammer pretends to be a friend or family member in an emergency and asks you to send money right away and not tell anyone. Immediately Hang up and call them on a number you know is theirs.

Scammers also initiate contact by displaying fake error messages on websites you visit, possibly displaying support numbers and enticing you to call. Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers use scary tactics to trick you into unnecessary technical support services to supposedly fix your device or software problems that don’t exist. At best, the scammers are trying to get you to pay them to fix a nonexistent problem with your device or software. At worst their trying to steal your personal information; and if you allow them to remote into your computer to perform this “fix “they will often install malware, ransomware or other unwanted programs that can steal your information or damage your data or device.

Please be very cautious with any and all calls you receive, especially this time of year!
