just that as it parodies all of the Shakespeare plays (and the sonnets) in two acts.” Opening with a version of “Romeo and Juliet,” students run and jump across the stage from the scholarly introduction and keeps the audience guessing on what is going to happen as Romeo and Juliet fade into a cooking show take-off for a rendering of “Titus Andronicus.”

To get tickets, you pretty much had to know somebody. You couldn’t find one anywhere. It seems each year these tickets are more and more in demand and they are gone sooner than the previous year. was filled and some people even had to stand along the walls. There are good reasons why this performance is riveting from the opening dance to the finale. The performances, under the guidance of Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin, were nothing short of brilliant. The spirit of aloha at its very finest. Keiki and kupuna, men and women, took turns on the stage. They were, at once, entertaining, fascinating, enchanting. Of course, the youngest boys and girls drew perhaps the biggest cheers. Cute kids, especially cute kids who can hula so well, with
joyful grins, always do. The kupuna, swaying smoothly, softly, commanded the most respect. The kane flashed strong, powerful, precise moves. The wahine were graceful, delightful, beautiful. If anyone stole the show, they did with choreography that was imaginative, creative, inspiring. “Electric,” an overused word, comes to mind when thinking of the wahine. The hula, alone, was mesmerizing. Dance after dance, just as good as the one before. The music of Homestead, Keauhou, Na Hoa and Amy Hanaialii Gilliom — each took the stage for their sets — was an added bonus. Each brought their own style and sound. Each delivered their own kind of magic to
the evening. Pavao Jardin, she of the big smile and heart, did more than prepare her halau for one of this island’s most anticipated celebrations. She took the stage and demonstrated why she is one of the very best at what she does. It was clear for all that she loves each of her students, and loves sharing her passion, her craft, her life. Her hula was captivating. Pure comes to mind. More than dance. An extension of who she is and what she does. The crowd of about 1,000, or as many as War Memorial holds, was treated to an unforgettable night. More than three hours of breathtaking hula. The finale, when the dancers performed in the aisles, then all came together
on stage, was every bit as good as you could find anywhere. A perfect cap to the night. That we were able to see this show here on Kauai was a gift. And we thank Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin and her students for this gift. Everyone there is already looking forward to next year’s show. There is, however, one problem: There are not enough tickets. If you want tickets, it might not hurt to start asking about them now, to be on the safe side. osanne Cash brings in a fair share of collaborators on her latest album, both for songwriting and singing. T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson, Sam Phillips, Lera Lynn and Colin Meloy of the Decemberists all make their presence felt. “She Remembers Everything” is the sort of lovely, literate work we’ve come to expect from Cash for more than 30 years. Her last three
albums have largely looked back, at musical and family history, and this is a return to a more personal songwriting style. The best song here (“Not Many Miles to Go”), produced by Tucker Martine, is a love song to John Leventhal. As the title suggests, it’s about a couple that knows it has more days behind them than ahead. Yet it’s celebratory, not morbid, and rocks hard. Other highlights include “8 Gods of Harlem,” another team effort with Costello and Kristofferson.

BRUNSTETTER WEAVES ANOTHER TALE WORTH DISCOVERING CYNTHIA LYNN & ED JUSTUS SPECIAL TO TGIFR!DAY

ometimes life presents us with choices, challenging ones, both which can seem the right
thing to do, and yet it can be hard to decide which path to follow. This is what Ellen Lambright, an Illinois Amish woman, is faced with after having gone to visit her longtime friend who moved to Hawaii. Her friend is thankful for her company, helping her with her small farm and other personal challenges, and Ellen has even met someone who she finds a strong attraction to, even though his values differ from hers. The duties
and responsibilities of her life in Illinois versus remaining in Hawaii to help her friend and possibly find love. Engaging already, right? Wanda E. Brunstetter is a Christian fiction bestselling novelist who specifically crafts Amish-related stories. It does certainly make for interesting and different storytelling, given that this is not the normal lifestyle for most of us! And her stories have grabbed countless readers, religious or not, as they get to know her
characters. Perhaps why is because she taps into universally human stories, and her prose keeps us following along with the characters. Lucky for us, Wanda E. Brunstetter (along with her daughter, Jean Brunstetter) decided to bring together her Amish novel series into the setting of the Hawaiian Islands! The first of the series was titled “The Hawaiian Quilt,” this story is this recently which garnered much released book, “The Hawaiian acclaim. Following up on Discovery.”
One of the great things about this novel is that you can join in the story and not feel like you are suddenly in the middle of things. This is a continuing saga, but “The Hawaiian Discovery” is its own tale. More than 400 people took advantage of the resort’s hospitality that transformed the resort ballroom into a Halloween fantasyland with ample room for dining and enjoying the pasta while keiki flitted throughout the room, dancing to the music and engaging in the appealing attractions.
