R
oger Daltrey, “As Long As I Have You” (Republic Records) It may seem paradoxical to begin a review of a Roger Daltrey album by mentioning Pete Townshend, but The Who vocalist himself credits his bandmate for encouragement in getting “As Long As I Have You” finished. “I’d lost confidence in it, due to a long break recovering from meningitis,” Daltrey says in a touching liner note on his first solo record since 1992. Daltrey has embodied many characters on record, stage and screen — pinball wizard Tommy and real-life reformed criminal John McVicar among them — but he’s not the kind of singer whose personality gets lost in the song. Instead, his credibility and authenticity as a vocalist make the tunes his own no matter who wrote them. Townshend’s also plays acoustic guitar and a few electrifying solos on seven of the 11 songs on the album, an exquisitely chosen selection of tunes by Stephen Stills, Parliament, Stevie Wonder, Nick Cave, K.T. Oslin by way of Dusty Springfield and Boz Scaggs, among others. Daltrey tips his cap to his band and youth by covering a pair of tracks The Who played when they were starting

out — the dynamic title song and a Joe Tex ballad, “The Love You Save.” Both Stills’ “How Far” (from the first Manassas album) and Parliament’s “Get On Out of the Rain” (aka “Come In Out of the Rain”) could be The Who circa 1972, Daltrey singing with gusto and Townshend’s guitar lines providing real lift. Oslin’s soulful “Where Is a Man to Go” and Cave’s “Into My Arms” are also great. The end of the album brings a rarity: Daltrey originals. The tender “Certified Rose,” with Stax-like horns, is dedicated to his daughter, while thoughtful closer “Always Heading Home” attains added poignancy in light of his brush with mortality. Daltrey says he’s ready for another Who album and this record and his 2014 collaboration with Wilko Johnson show he’s still in great form. It would be an amazing journey, Pete.

auai’s best voices will be singing timeless classics this weekend to raise funds for education. The Mokihana Club’s Spring Concert, “The Crooners & Divas of the 50s,” is 4 p.m. Sunday at St Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church to benefit its music scholarship program. “It’s a unique, nostalgic concert for the island,” said Helena Cooney, spring concert chairwoman. “Music Scholarships are one of the main focuses of the Mokihana Club, and this is how we raise the money to be given out in the 18-19 club year.” Postponed by the April 15 flood, the concert is back on track. Under the direction of vocal teacher Dolly Kanekuni, 12 Kauai singers will reproduce some of the big-

Why, it’s enjoying a free donut on National Donut Day in support of The Salvation Army in Hawaii, today. “Most people don’t know that The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies first began serving donuts to soldiers on the front lines of World War I in France in 1917,” said Major John Chamness, Divisional Leader for The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division. “We will have costumed Donut Lassies at many participating bakery locations and encourage Donut Day fans to share photos via social media using the hashtags #NationalDonutDay and #GivingIsSweet.” Daylight Donuts’ Lihue

New Star Wars movie draws full house
A
wild rip through space, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” moves at full throttle with a reckless flavor that matches its protagonists’ personality. It’s a good solid bit of fun, an adventure flick peppered with tentacle monsters and reptilian creatures, opportunist femme fatales and dodgy bar scenes — set to the tune of Chewbacca’s telltale roars and Solo’s renegade spontaneity. Thursday’s advanced showing at Kukui Grove Cinema brought out a full house, with seats filled through the theater’s front-most row. The costumes that generally accompany a premier, however, were nowhere to be seen. Cheers sounded with the opening scene of the movie after a string of previews for movies like “Skyscraper” with Dwayne Johnson (he’s filming Jungle Cruise out here, If
JESSICA ELSE TGIFR!DAY you haven’t heard), “Ant Man and the Wasp” and “Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom” (parts of that were filmed here, too). Those previews could have all been for the same movie with their matching cinematography and musical scores, but when “Solo” began, there was no mistaking it for anything but a Star Wars story. Set when the seed of the Rebellion was just starting to sprout, Solo starts out as a lovesick teenager escaping from a street gang on the planet Corellia and enrolling in the Imperial Flight Academy. Three years later, the flyboy’s dreams have been muddied and he’s serving as an infantryman on the planet Mimban. In the midst of war’s chaos, he meets a gang
of smugglers and thieves that propel him out of the infantry. It’s during that time he meets up with Chewbacca, the 196-year old Wookiee, the two of them finding common ground in a mutual need to survive and the Wookiee language Shyriiwook. The pair cement together while escaping Mimban with the crew of smugglers and thieves, and are swept up in a mission to steal a shipment of the hyperfuel coaxium for the cutthroat criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn. Pirates throw a wrench in the plan and trigger reunions for Solo as he and his smuggler crew work to pay their debt to Crimson Dawn and cut themselves free from the syndicate’s influence. ui o Laka, the sponsoring organization behind the annual Banana Poka Round Up, describes the event as “a lively forest education fair,” and this year’s event was no exception. A steady stream of people flowed uphill to the historic Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, braving the misty weather. Patrons created baskets using the woody vines of the Banana Poka, an invasive plant species that at one time threatened the Kokee forests. There were keiki activities, including creating walking sticks from the invasive strawberry guava, Hawaiian entertainment, crafts, exhibits from state agencies and groups doing work in the forests, food, and a silent auction. The inclement weather forced some of the exhibits inside the cabins of the CCC Camp, allowing patrons a glimpse at the work being done to restore the facility.
