Thomas Iannucci, was nominated for Best Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year. Kilauea’s Stuart Hollinger was nominated for Rock Album of the Year for “Eklectic,” produced by Baby Boy Productions. Also nominated for Rock Album of the Year was Anahola’s Pierce Bivens for his EP “Shining,” produced by Bandwagon Studios. The 2018 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards will be held on Saturday, May 19, in Honolulu. Online voting for the awards began April 5, and all voting members will be emailed when the final ballot is available. Mark Riley “It’s an album that pays respect not only to God but to our culture around us as far as the music and the people in relation to faith, hope and love,” said Riley, an ordained pastor with a local church and an itinerant minister with Music Missions International Hawaii. “It’s important for us to relate where we live in terms of our sound and in terms of honoring where we are,” Riley said. One of the Hawaiian musicians featured is Kawika Kahiapo, well known by Na Hoku followers and the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts as an accomplished slackkey artist. “This particular album stands out as something special, and I’m glad people got to listen to it and recognize it,” Riley said. “I don’t really do things for money or accolades.”

ince we recently moved to Kapaa, the go-to place has become Bubba Burgers. It’s ironic, really, because I was never that big of a fan before. But now that we live nearby, and we’ve tried it several times, I love it. Here’s why. Good vibes It’s just a nice, friendly place. They greet you with a smile, scribble your order

door. It’s casual and relaxed, a good spot to take your time, talk story, do some people-watching from the front porch and enjoy life. The ocean is within sight, as is a short walk on Ke Ala Hele Makalae to work off some of the calories you just added. Good sense of humor “Bubba refuses to serve any burger costing less than a can of dog food,” says a message posted above the grill. And the golden M with a slash through it is impossible to miss. A challenge to the big guy. Their logo includes the words, “We Relish Your Buns,” and “We Cheat Tourist Drunk & Attorneys.” Ask them to explain. Good food The basics begin with the Bubba Burger. For $4, it’s fine. Can’t go wrong. A solid burger. But for a little more, you can do better. The Kauai Burger is

everything you need a burger to be. The Double Bubba, $6, will fill you up. The Teriyaki Burger for $4.35 is already a favorite of ours. If you’re really hungry, go with the Double Slopper. It’s described as an “Open faced double patty burger,
smothered with Bubba’s Famous ‘Coors Tavern’ Chili.” Their burgers are not greasy, just as billed. Now, you’ll be needing some sides. Go with the fries, always hot, crispy and fresh. The Caesar salad, at $4.25, is a good deal.

Thomas Iannucci Hawaiian rapper Illtalian, whose birth name is Thomas Iannucci, was nominated along with his producer Ariki Foster for their work on his debut album, “Makana,” in the Best Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year category. The album, which features guest verses by some of the biggest names in Christian rap (including 1k Phew, Je’kob, Swift and Gemstones, as well as guest production by Grammy winner Big Juice and Grammy nominee Spechouse), was released in December of 2017. It has currently been streamed more than 10,000 times on Spotify. “It’s an honor to be nominated,” said Foster. “It’s pretty rare for a Kauai artist to get nominated since we’re from one of the smallest islands, especially in the rap category. I don’t think it’s happened before. I’m very excited to see where we go from here.”

The album was named in memory of one of Iannucci’s best friends, Lucas Makana Riley, who was killed in a car accident in 2016. The name “Makana” means “gift” in Hawaiian. Riley is the son of Mark Riley. “When I decided to name the album ‘Makana,’ it was a bit of a play on words,” said Iannucci. “It was my gift to Lucas, and my way to honor his memory, as well as a way to share my gift of rapping with the world. nterprise Rent-A-Car got a break Saturday when the Koloa Landing crew was not able to make the annual Charity Walk Bowling event. Instead of having empty lanes, Enterprise Rent-A-Car sent a crew of bowlers to fill in at the sold-out event that adds funds to the Visitor Industry Charity Walk presented by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, Kauai Chapter on May 12 at a new gathering place — the North Vidinha soccer fields. Christina Gabriel, the walk’s co-chair, said this year, the HLTA wants more participation and engagement from the nonprofit organizations that benefit from the walk. This was demonstrated by the appearances of representatives from Hale ‘Opio, Friendship House and Girl Scouts. Next on the calendar is the new Flavors of Kukuiula on April 28, where patrons can enjoy street food, entertainment and a silent auction to benefit the annual Charity Walk.
