For more than four years, Rainbeau Jo’s big white truck served customers in a parking lot on the south side of Vidinha Stadium. Adorned with a colorful rainbow wave and complete kitchen inside, the roving restaurant, named Betty White, has finally found a home with its very own parking. “We are expanding with the intent of building out
a community space that people can come out to,” said co-owner Beau Hannafious, who founded the business with his wife, Jo Weaver. The energetic couple followed their passion for creating a specialty coffee and food truck, joining their names in a clever wordplay to create the business’ identity. “Coffee to us is more than a morning ritual or a way to wake up,” Weaver said. “It’s a love, a passion and the best part of our day.” Now the popular coffee truck is comfortably parked inside a uniquely decorated boutique bay fashioned
inside a Lihue warehouse on Aukele Street. The warehouse bay has been transformed into a cozy cafe with relaxing tables and jazzy upbeat music played above cheerful chatter and aromas of fresh brewed coffee with toasting bagels. “It’s just been really incredible, our customers were amazing,” Weaver said. “They drove around forever looking for parking spots and sat out in the rain and wind with us for four years. many people hang with us through the years.” “Now we can actually provide a space for them to hang out with us, hoola hoop, drink coffee,” she added. The cheery food truck setup doles out made-toorder smoothies, bagels and of course coffee. Sourcing organic coffee, they’ve even developed their own signature espresso blend through Hammerhead Coffee Roasters, a smooth blend of handpicked Ethiopian Harrar, Brazilian and Honduras beans called Carpe Kope. “I love how friendly they are here and their coffee obviously is amazing, so are their bagels,” said Charisma Sahlstrom of Wailua Homesteads, a loyal customer for nearly two years. “When they were just in the little truck over yonder I would go sometimes. But now since they’ve been here, it’s more regular. I love their new setup.” Much of their ingredients are sourced from organic and local Hawaiian farmers, especially the artisan bagels from Ya Quddus Bagelry in Lihue. All ingredients are organic and vegan (except the jalapeno-cheddar) to complement the coffee and smoothies that sell for between $2 and $10. “We always have a local special going on, so right now we have the Kiawe bean bagel,” Hannafious said. “Ya Quddus actually teams up with a guy in Maui who creates Kiawe bean flour. He ships it over here, and he crusts the actual bagels with

that Kiawe bean flour.” “We carry organic Kauai Microgreens and clover sprouts from Rainbow Farms,” Weaver added. “We try to hit the farmers markets as much as we can. Our kale is local and our bagel guy Ya provides us honey from his huge mecca of honey bees up in Wailua, and we exclusively have his amazing honey.” The new digs also include an extensive art gallery featuring photography of local artist, Jason Carnegie, along with ceramic sunrise mugs and small planters created by resident artist, Courtney Puig. “That’s a huge collaboration we’re excited to bring,” Hannafious said. “They’re both amazing artists.” Another new addition to the breakfast business is the “grab-and-go” front display offering different daily specials in mason jars that are good for two to three days. “I love the coffee, and I love coming here,” said Wailua Homesteads’ Kayla Pomorski, a frequent cus-
tomer since August. “Beau and Jo are just super fun and high energy, and they love all the people that come. They have great coffee, and they’re awesome people,” said Pomorski. The couple has trademarked the saying, “Brew Aloha.” “That just kind of instills our mantra not only for our business but just in general toward life,” Hannafious said. “Brew Aloha means brewing coffee but also instilling love and positive vibes to other people as well.” Rainbeau Jo’s is at 2955 Aukele Street in Bay E. he Kauai Philippine Cultural Center announces the third Garden Island Film Festival from March to May as part of the KPCC’s pre-opening activities of the center, located in Puhi and which is nearing its construction completion. The festival will be over three months and will highlight a series of themes including surf, Filipino, Hawaiian and Japanese films. The annual festival is free and screenings will be at three locations thanks to the support of the business partner-hosts and grants. The first of the series will open in March and will highlight three films. Other
films about the Filipino and Japanese people will be in April and May. Show times are about 6:30 p.m., depending upon the sunset as all screenings will be outdoors. The following is the schedule of films and locations: Keahualaka, A Door to Hawaiian Spirituality Ka ’Imi Nau ’auao o Hawaii Nei Institute’s documentary, “Keahualaka, A Door to Hawaiian Spirituality” is an in-depth interview of the institute’s founder and current president, Roselle Keliihonipua Bailey, who provides a firsthand account of what transpired over many years after she sought and received

What could cause nine otherwise sane and responsible men to risk their lives, careers, and the well-being of their families by undertaking such a reckless endeavor? “A Voyage for Madmen” follows these lives of these nine persons, with their dubious desires wrought with egoism, each wishing to outdo Sir Chichester’s record being the first person to sail single-handed around the world by the clipper route,
as well as being the fastest circumnavigator, having completed his voyage in nine months and one day. Author Nichols skillfully accounts their individual stories in great detail: why they entered the race, what they had staked on winning, and their very real struggles at sea, which reads like a exciting seagoing tale of adventure. We found it very easy to turn the pages to discover how some were defeated by the intensity of the race’s harsh power of the ocean or the rules, even the lengths to
which one contestant went to be declared the winner. “A Voyage for Madmen” also describes in detail the enormous difficulty of solo navigation in the time before GPS when this race occurred. REVIEW: ‘TOMB RAIDER,’ WITH VIKANDER, ISN’T HALF BAD

n “Tomb Raider ,” which has elements of “Indiana Jones,” ‘’Batman” and even

But she’s also not past seeing a random business man on the street, thinking that perhaps it is her long-lost and presumed to be dead father (Dominic West) and going into a hazy flashback dream that distracts her enough to lose focus in the race and flip over a police car. At the local police station, we learn the truth of Lara: This isn’t some working class girl at all, this is someone who grew up wealthier than most could imagine and whose inheritance won’t kick in until she signs some papers acknowledging that her father, who disappeared seven years ago, is dead. Just as she’s about to concede to
her father’s deputy (Kristin Scott Thomas), she stumbles on a clue that sends her on a journey to find out what happened to her father on that remote island off the coast of Japan. He was looking for some ancient “death queen” named Himiko that we spend the next half of the film talking about and searching for. Lara swings by Hong Kong first and gets the son of a man her father knew, Lu Ren (a compelling but underused Daniel Wu) to join her on this adventure. One harrowing boat ride later and they’ve smashed into the island and found themselves in the possession of Vogel (Walton Goggins), a mercenary who is trying to get the mummified Himiko off the island. pieces really start to click. As it stands, though, “Tomb Raider” is an often fun and visually compelling action pic, that is also sometimes unintentionally silly, with a great actress leading the whole thing. Two and a half stars out of four.

IHUE — Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. got to sit on the school-created hovercraft during the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Night. “You know how big he is, and, it worked,” said Wilcox School teacher Barbara Bloemke. “The hovercraft lifted him up and didn’t collapse.” The hovercraft was just one of the many hands-on exhibits that explained the use of scientific concepts to create functional tools and projects that attracted hundreds of school students, their families and friends. Coordinated by the school’s teachers to demonstrate topics in science, technology, engineering and math, the school staff got help from community partners to enhance the evening of excitement and fun with exhibits including slime, plant science and creating light sabers. Leila Kobayashi, vice principal, said this was the third year the school has offered the family night as a demonstration that learning can be fun.
