Women In Theater will present 18 10-minute plays during weekend festival at Kauai Community College

layers will challenge death, deal with Saint Peter’s multitude of computers, and take on airport customs in this weekend’s production of Kauai Shorts. The 18 plays on tap for the 14th Women In Theater ten-minute play festival will be Friday and Saturday at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center. Each night will feature nine different plays. Performances start at 7 each evening. “The group favored comedies a little more this year than other years,” said producer Romey Curtis, a founding member of JESSICA ELSE WIT. TGIFR!DAY WIT judges reviewed 130 scripts from around the world before making their selections. “The exciting thing is that three of the plays are by local authors, and the play that won the honorarium award is a local author,” said Fran Kalb, WIT board member and another producer of Kauai Shorts. Kauai local Morgan Liddell is the author of “Surprise Party,” the Best of Show play. Kalb is directing three plays in the festival and said she’s been busy ironing out details in her own plays as well as helping coordinate the production. “It takes a village and we’re a community. It’s a fun process,” she said. “It’s nice to get together with people — some that I’ve

worked with before and some new people, so that’s exciting.” Kalb said she is looking forward to seeing Kauai’s talented local players bring the submissions to life. Both she and Curtis said the plays were high quality, and choosing the winners of the contest was a tough task. ........0 “It always makes me sad to think of all the playwrights out there that send their plays in, even here as far from Broadway as you can get,” Curtis said. “We get so many and we have to whittle it down.” Among the plays on tap is a short called “Death and Chocolate,” an ironic comedy centered on a game of chance between a young woman and the character of Death in a restaurant. A seer tells fortunes in an elevator in another short, and a doctor takes up writing obituaries in one. Each night, Kauai Shorts is set to last about two hours with quick switches in minimal scenery to set the stage for every play. “We’ll do it in front of the curtain in the performing arts center, so we use the curtain as a backdrop,” Curtis said. Each of the plays has a cast of between two and seven characters and most actors are doing two parts. One actor has three

roles. “There are some incredible plays this year,” Kalb said. “Some are serious and are more heartfelt, and others are funny. I think the whole experience is going to be a great evening for everybody.”

ANALEI — Following a Sunday of hiking and swimming on the North Shore, my wife and I had an hour and a half to get to the St. Regis Princeville Resort for Kauai Chorale’s spring concert. In somewhat of a hurry, we pulled into Hanalei, parked and wandered into Kalypsos Island Bar and Grill. I was a bit worried we would have to wait for a seat outside, where I prefer to sit, and that the food would take too long or we would have grumpy servers. Turns out we had nothing to worry about. A friendly hostess quickly led us to a table for two, outside as we requested. Within minutes, a smiling waiter checked in with us, delivered glasses of water, and took our order for two pints of their Kona beer on tap, Wailua Wheat and Longboard, both $3.50 since it was happy hour. so you might have to wait, but it’s worth it. Kalypsos serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you get a chance, sit at bar and watch a game on one of the big screen TVs. Come football season, this is a great place to spend a Sunday morning and join the crowds in rooting for your favorite team (Go Denver!). And unless you’re anti-social, you’ll end up chatting with the person sitting next to you. The time I ran the Kalalau Trail out and back, 22 miles, I stopped at Kalypsos for a cold beer when I finished to recover. I got to talking to the couple from Chicago next to me, and eventually told them of my long run that day that nearly killed me. They thought I was insane, but they paid for my beer. If that happened every time, I’d run the Kalalau more often. By the way, we left Kalypsos about 40 minutes or so after we arrived and easily made it to the Kauai Chorale show at 5. It was pretty much a perfect lunch stop. We left happy and full — and I ate the other half of that sandwich while driving to the concert. Some things just can’t wait.

ohn Austin Keikialoha Ka‘ohelauli‘i-Kahokuloa had a week to get the words to the national and state anthem, said John Constantino of the Kauai Commu nity College. It was sufficient as the Kauai Community College student opened the 52nd annual commencement where more than 150 students walked under the canopy of music from the KCC Wind and Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sarah Tochiki. Major Victor Aguilar, director of the Waimea High School JROTC, said there were no seniors in the color guard and saber unit who provided the protocol for the graduating college students. “The seniors all turned in their equipment, including uniforms, to get their senior obligations out of the way,” Aguilar said. “They need to get everything out of the way before graduating, Friday at 6 p.m. on the school’s front lawn.”
