T
he curtain rises for the first time on “Disney’s Mulan Jr.” tonight at 7 in the Kalaheo School cafeteria, presented by the Kalaheo School Drama Club. The production features more than 30 students ranging from grades three through five, and is directed by Tani Ishino, who
made her appearance as a director during last year’s drama club production. The presentation is based on Disney’s Oscar-nominated 1998 animated film and is a celebration of culture, honor and the fighting spirit. The students’ presentation is peppered with hit songs from the film production, and brings ancient China to life with a story filled with action, humor and heart. Additional curtain times for “Disney’s Mulan Jr.” will be Friday through Sunday, May 3-5, with curtain times at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. SEE ‘MULAN,’ PAGE 4

In the saga, the Huns have invaded, and it is up to the misfit Mulan and her mischievous dragon sidekick, Mushu, to save the emperor. Defying the village matchmaker, Mulan takes up arms and disguises herself as a boy to spare her father from having to serve in the army. The great battle with the Huns draws near, and Mulan must choose between revealing her true identity as a girl, or saving China with her plan. Advance tickets are available at the Kalaheo School office, 332-6801, or at the door on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited seating. Special student pricing for keiki ages 2 through grade five are available, with proceeds supporting the drama club for next year’s production. Early arrival enables patrons to
enjoy the offerings from the food booth as well as silent auction items from community donors. The school’s drama club also has a fundraising goal to acquire a new sound system which will enable it to continue to produce outstanding student performances. Donations for this goal are welcome. The drama club has been enriching the lives of Kalaheo-area students for the past 16 years, starting with the program’s founder, Marly Madayag, who is still found helping students in and around the production area. The program is now under the guidance of Ishino, who is directing her second production at the school this year. “Disney’s Mulan Jr.” credits include music and lyrics by Matthew Wilder, David Zippel, Stephen Schwartz, Jeanine Tsory and Alexa Junge. Music adaptation and arrangement as well as additional music and lyrics are by

y friend Jim Jung always has pearls of wisdom to share. His wisdom is beyond his years. So it’s fitting that he found and gave to me one of my favorite books, “1,001 Pearls of Runners’ Wisdom: Advice and Inspiration for the Open Road,” edited and introduced by Bill Katovsky and published in 2012. Jung came across this gem at a library book sale and snatched it up, knowing that a running fool like myself would love it. I do. It sits near my desk at work. This book, by the way, has my hero Steve Prefontaine on the cover. I must add, before going on about the book, that Jim was a fine runner and Ironman in his days. He and I have swapped running stories, which we find mesmerizing. This guy was in incredible shape and posted some outstanding race

times. But my best marathon time was faster than his! Back to pearls of wisdom about running. It’s packed full of good advice and divides it under different headings, including “Why I don’t run,”“There’s No Business like Shoe Business,”“Hey Coach” and “The Naked Ape.” Running is one of those sports that, to get started, you need motivation. Once you’re started, you need inspiration. And to keep going, you need encouragement. This book provides that. Here are a few of the best bits of wisdom in it. ◗ “The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.” —Juma Ikanga of Tanzania. ◗ “Once upon a time, about twenty years ago to be precise, runners believed they didn’t have to do anything but run.” — Amy Burfoot, “The Principles of Running.”
◗ “My favorite diet was a glass of beer with some bread and cheese.” — Walter George, late 19th century British running star. ◗ “Sometimes you’ve got to go through hell to get to heaven.” – Dean Karnazes ◗ “They say you can’t run away from your troubles. I say that you can.” — John Bingham ◗ “I was unable to walk for a whole week after that, so much did the race take out of me. But it was the most pleasant exhaustion I
have ever known.” — Emil Zatopek, on his Olympic Marathon win in Helsinki in 1952 And finally, all you non-runners will appreciate this one: ◗ “I am sick of joggers and I am sick of runners. I don’t care if all the people in the U.S. are running or planning to run or wishing they could run. All I ask is, don’t write articles about running and ask me to read them.” — Frank Deford, Sports Illustrated writer, in 1978. After nearly four decades of running if you go back to my high school track days of running a mile as fast as I could (4:46 for those who care) and logging thousands of miles, one would think I could offer my own pearls of running wisdom. I have two pieces of advice: “Run. You’ll meet people you never would have otherwise met. You’ll see things you never would have otherwise seen. You’ll visit places you would have otherwise never visited. You’ll discover things about
yourself you would have otherwise never discovered. You’ll open doors that would otherwise remain closed.” And there is also this one, though it’s not really advice, more of a statement: “When I finish a race, no matter what my place and time, my wife greets me like I just won the Olympics. That is a good reason to run.” Jung, by the way, had this to say about running: “It’s an addiction and, like other addictions, there can be positives and negatives. You get a great high from running and you feel good. But it can be selfish. There are times you’re out running you should be home helping your spouse.” Jung is right. Before he heads to Vegas, Sting has a string of projects in the works: He’ll tour the United Kingdom with Shaggy (they won the best reggae album Grammy this year for their collaborative album “44/876”); he has a number of solo shows in the United States and around the world; and he will release a new album, “My Songs,” on May 24. The album finds Sting re-shaping and re-imagining some of his biggest hits, from
“Every Breath You Take” to “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.” “We weren’t treating the original recordings as holy relics or museum pieces ... we were just having fun with the songs,” said the 67-year-old, adding that his voice is now “different to what it was 30, 40 years ago. It has more texture, a richness to it.” His song, “Shape of My Heart,” will also appear on the new album.

Sally Bauer of Washington said she’s always enjoyed Lydgate Park, and has participated in the big cleanup and community workday on previous visits to Kauai. They were some of around 200 people who celebrated Earth Day by participating in the community workday where the Friends of Kamalani expanded its weekly beach cleanup and sprucing of the park to include more major tasks such as scuba diving to scour the underwater areas of Morgans Ponds. Other groups cleaned the adjacent heiau, while others did maintenance work on the Kamalani Playground. Students from the Kapaa High School Interact Club, in addition to maintaining the Zero Waste refuse stations, joined the Kauai High School Key Club in doing work on the recently-added disc golf holes at the adjoining Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Sports Park. Others worked on maintenance at the Bynum Bridge (formerly Kamalani Kai bridge) and its surrounding area, including Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the Eastside coastal path.
